Stopped in for a snack and a sampler. Only after I ordered did I discover that they also offered some cask conditioned samples, but that was my fault, not theirs. Service was quick and friendly but I was there during off hours so it probably wasnt the best test of that. The food was good - as it has been at most rock bottoms in my experience. I would say the beer was above average for other Rock Bottoms - most were tasty examples of their styles (see reviews for more details). Nice patio area for people watching on Ocean Blvd. The atmosphere inside is mostly chain - but it is a bit more inviting than some.

Really nice vibe, the outside seating area during the summer was perfect. Beers were ok they always have a new featured beer that was just brewed so it was cool to try it.

Rock Bottom is a great location when the races are in town. Walking distance. Have a nice selection of food and a very good beer selection. If this were an east coast bar the beer selection would be only ok at best, but for the LA area the beer selection is very good.

Stopped by this place while on a trip to Long Beach.

First off, I thought the place/atmosphere was pretty cool. Nice big area. We ate a late lunch and it was still busy at that point. Our waitress was nice and pretty attentive. The food was good. I had a turkey/jalapeño burger and it was tasty. They mostly have their own brews on tap with a few guest taps. The house beers are decent but nothing to write home on. Overall, this is a pretty solid place that would be a good stop every once in a while. But with Beachwood BBQ and Congregation Ales in the immediate area there are better options.

Stopped in here after what was a somewhat disappointing show at the Long Beach Arena (Descendents, Bad Religion, and Rise Against). Disappointing mostly because Bad Religion's performance can't even be described as mailed in and the acoustics were terrible.

But, on to the review...

The late hour of the visit mean that really only the bar area was open, and it was fairly crowded. The bartender seemed a bit annoyed that I wanted to get a sampler of all their house beers, but that's his problem.

My friend and I ordered a couple of their appetizer items which were both fantastic (pulled pork sliders and fried macaroni and cheese). The beers were fairly solid as well, none were really terrible.

If you're in the area, it could certainly be worth coming here but of course, I wouldn't go out of my way.

My review is only on the brewery aspect here.

I admit, that having this chain around in Illinois, it was somewhere that I didn't mind hitting up when we were looking for something safe. It was also a place I felt I could go wherever there was one in the town I was visiting, if I wanted a decent brew and no good beer bars were around.

After finally breaking down and deciding to try this one last January, I have become HOOKED on the brews here. The brewer, Hayley, makes beers that IMO can go head to head with a lot of the craft brews nationally distributed out there. There is always one or two "non-regular" beers on tap, and often 1 or 2 more on cask.

For the house beers, her APA and Oatmeal Stout are both WAY above average. The other house beers are all solid, but not my styles, so don't order them.

Once a month, there is a seasonal brew tapped, varying from hop bombs to tripels to marzens. Hayley took the tripel yeast and brewed as an IPA recently for a side beer to serve, and it was INCREDIBLE. The current is a hoppy strong ale, that again, is OUTSTANDING!

The next few releases up her sleeve are Stocking Stuffer, which she described as their stout with some spices thrown in. The January seasonal is her Imp Stout, which is what really hooked me in last year. She also has last years brew that has been in barrels for 12 months that she will tap soon.

So this is a place that you can hit up often, and try a variety of brews that are always pleasing to your palate

Came to eat here for dinner while visiting friends in Long Beach. The set up reminded me of a Chili's or other chain bar, with a brewery in the middle of the restaurant. There were about 5-7 taps and a cask ale, with typical brewpub styles covered. We had the wheat and the pale ale. I wasn't a fan of the wheat, but the pale ale was nice.

For food I ordered Jambalaya. Overall, I wasn't impressed. It seemed like the meat, rice, and "sauce" were all made separately and then added together. The sausage and chicken tasted very good with it, but the shrimp and rice weren't very flavorful. I wouldn't recommend this dish, but the rest of the food seemed decent. Overall, this is a decent brewpub that I wouldn't mind having as a local.

Great atmospere with the place being pretty damn packed. Even though it was busy the service was still good and the bartender was very attentive when we needed to get another beer. The nachos were off the hook and the soup was pretty good as well. They brewed 8 different beers that were decent and the Ipa was the one that stood out more to me. Everything was pretty good overall and the quality was decent in the food and the beer. This was the second time I have gone and had a much better experience this time around with the service. Good place to stop and have a beer if your around the long beach area. Will stop by again in the future.

Went here on Monday 11/9/09 for lunch. Walking in the place has almost a diner feel to it with very small booths and very long bar. Fermentation vessels are clearly visible. They only had about 6 beers on tap, nothing too surprising, standard brewpub styles - light lager, blonde, red, pale ale and stout. I did end up having their new Black IPA, though they were out of the Witches' Brew which looked quite interesting though it was still on their menu. The Black IPA was solid and well made, no problems there.

Service was solid as well, prompt and courteous. For food I had the smoked salmon fish and chips which were quite tasty. All and all another solid brewpub in the Southland for me. Definitely worth a visit.

Stayed at a hotel about a block away and made my way down here for lunch one day.

Atmosphere is good. The brewing equipment is viewable from the outside window (Ocean). I briefly poked my head inside to see a good deal of booths and a decent-sized bar before heading back outside to grab the lone remaining table. The front of the store is along Pine and there are about 10-12 tables outside.

Quality is good. The beer was served at the correct temperature with a bit less head than I would have preferred but nothing egregious.

Service is good. I didn't pick the waitress's brain but I didn't have to wait long to place an order, or anything else for that matter.

Selection was pretty good. I believe they had between eight and ten taps flowing with a good cross-section of styles.

Food was good. I had the sliders and had no real complaints.

Value is good. It's a bit on the expensive side, but so are most chain-style brewpubs in my opinion.

Overall this is one of the better chain-style brewpubs I've been to and one I would visit again. Worth a stop.

The last two times I've been there were for brewers dinners, so I'm really reviewing the fact that they have reasonably priced brewers dinners and the fact that their brewster, Hayley, is doing a wonderful job and not getting much props for it. Her beers are simple, clean and elegant and there's not a lot of that going around. This is not the place for monster brews, but all four of the beers I had were very easy drinking and quite tasty. The biggest beer was about 6.8% so you can while away some time without having to stumble away afterwards. The brew dinners are an excellent value and they are very receptive to your requests. For example, one course--curry chicken skewers--was paired with a guest brew that was excellent, but I thought a hoppier beer would work better and they had no issue about bringing me a pale ale that was not on the set menu. I've always enjoyed the food and beers at Rock Bottoms in general and I just want to point out that while to a great degree they are dependent on their brew master, Hayley is outstanding and underappreciated. Just don't expect fancy or hop bombs and I think you will enjoy this spot.

Located within spitting distance of the Long Beach trolley, I was bemused in that my brother drove us here, plus the fact that this did not exist in 1986-'87 when I was homeported here as a sailor aboard the USS Crommelin (FFG-37). Oh well.

It's location on the corner of Pine Avenue and Ocean Boulevard lent itself to patio seating as well as a live band as we walked up on a warm July evening. Entering, the m.d.s. was slightly off to the left but my brother cleverly bypassed the stand and made a beeline for the bar area, continuing aft and to the left. [I'll finish this later.]

Pretty good food, my wife and I LOVE the asiago dip with the beer bread... The meatloaf and steaks are pretty good as well.

Service was excellent on two visits, and lousy on one, so overall, it gets a "good" rating.

Beer is fabulous. I love the porter as well as the cyclone light lager.

The one exceptional point is their "mug club". If you join, all your drinks are in a larger mug (little hazy on size), but you get all kinds of rewards, as well as a $1 mug special on Thursdays.

Good place, good food, good beer.

I've always heard about this place and wanted to go. Fortunately, we stumbled upon it whilst searching for pre-concert pints.

It was quite busy (then again, it was on a Saturday night) and it reminded me of BJ's, only a bit fancier. We were seated quite promptly yet the rest of our service was rather meh. It took awhile for the waitress to come check on us and ask if we wanted another pint.

Their food was rather forgettable. I split a sandwich with my girlfriend and felt like they forgot to put anything in it.

Fortunately however, the beer saved this place! It should be noted, look around for menus on the wall because the beer menu only lists their most commonly tapped selections. They have a couple seasonals and a couple offerings on cask! I tried the Black Seal Stout, Hop Bomb IPA , and Vanilla Stout on cask. All were great brews especially the Hop Bomb which completely took me by surprise.

Though I wouldn't say this is a place to seek out, it's surely solid place for a pint but not so much for the food...

Went to Rock Bottom this weekend with my bf and a buddy before a concert. After being seated we were given the beer menu, but the hostess and our waitress both failed to mention that there were additional cask beers and seasonal beers available that were not on the beer menu.

The sandwiches were somewhat lacking and comprised primarily of bread, though the fries were quite tasty.

Had the Black Seal Stout first, which was fairly good. It had a nice head that lasted throughout almost the entire pint. Second on the list was a Vanilla Stout on cask that had an overall mellow flavor. It tasted only vaguely of vanilla. Finally I had the Hop Bomb. This was the best beer out of the three. Strong hop flavor and aroma. I was pleasantly surprised with this one.

The service was mediocre. We had a hard time getting the attention of the waitress and I had to wait quite a while for my second and third beers.

Overall, I would go there for a decent pint or two, but not for the food or service.

This is a chain "microbrewery" and I think that this detail should be mentioned from the beginning. My review is for the Long Beach location and, personally, I like it better than the closest Gordon Biersch.

When I went yesterday, they had 10 beers on tap. 6 regulars and 4 "seasonals". Unfortunately, I did not have time to drink a sampler set or eat any of the food so I ended up settling for just one beer which was the brown ale.

No complaints on the brown. Plus, there are plenty of TVs in the bar to occupy your attention while drinking. They also offer growlers if you are interested in taking some home with you.

Nice place in the Chili's/Applebee's/Elephant Bar vein. Lots of wood and brass and TVs that feature the inevitable sports channels. Staff is mostly young and good looking with great attitudes, though they don't know much about beer. They do have foods and desserts made with their beers and they had eight of their brews on tap: six regulars and two rotating/seasonal. If their beer were just better, this would be a much more essential stop in the great beer hunt. Instead, just head south along the coast a little ways to Belmont Shores to visit Belmont Brewing Company...

If you are going to be down in Long Beach to drink beer, you should really go the couple of blocks down to the Yard House. Instead of getting Rock Bottom's 7 or so house beers, you will have a choice of over 100 on tap.

The Rock Bottom Beers are hit and miss. Sometimes the beer seems to be a bit stale. Some are pretty good, but I have yet to have one there that knocks my socks off in any way that I think I must go back there to try it again.

Last time I went there was a bad smell throughout the place.

Went to the Long Beach Rock Bottom with some friends on Saturday night. Restaurant was very crowded but we were able to get a table out on the patio almost immediately (it was something like 95 degrees out, so everyone wanted to be inside). Service was a bit slow and slightly inattentive, we had a brand new waiter. First beer I had was their American Dream Anniversary Ale, I think they classified it as an IPA but I would classify it more as an amber, solidly quaffable but not a really hoppy brew as I would expect from an IPA. Seemed to be our lucky night, just as we were in need of another round, our waiter comes by- apparently the bartender accidently poured our order twice- free brews!
Ordered the spinach dip as an appetizer, tasty but not enough dipping stuff to use all the dip. I ordered the meatloaf and mashers which was very good. Finished the evening with the Dominator Dubbel which was pretty good- strong malt flavor. All in all an excellent visit, I haven't always liked their food and the beers I've had have been solid but nothing magnificent. After this visit though, I'm ready to go back. And next time, I'll have to try the casks which I wasn't awre of.
