So... How does one rate this to style? I don't know that there are any other beers that are very close to the style of Pangaea, being a 'traditional' beer, if you will - meaning a beer brewed with all kinds of wacky stuff, like the Mesopotamians used to drink. However, on the site, it's labeled a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, which puts it up against beers such as La Fin du Monde and (gulp) Duvel. Those are hard beers to beat in the appearance department. This pours out with absolutely no head except what you force. It's deep amber with simultaneous hints of dark ruby and light gold with an occasional rising bubble.
So... lack of head... no lacing... vaguely intriguing color... no visible carbonation. Ideally, this should be a one or two, but there's absolutely nothing to compare this beer to, so I can't say I've seen anything better or worse. Average it is. My beer arrived in a 750ml bottle, but was closed off with a standard DFH cap, by the way.
Softly sweet, fruity, and spicy are the scents, with a zippy punch of cardamum - spice is dominant, over flowery sugars and a blossoming alcohol as it warms. Exotic.
The flavor is a metallic, slightly tart belnd of coriander and cardamum spice and soft, light citrus fruits and sugars. I get a bit of grated lime peel, and the flavors finish with a bit of softly bittering hops that are more felt than tasted. I like it, because it takes such unusual flavors and does something good with them. Nothing weird here. Exotic, yes, off-putting, no.
Mouthfeel is smooth, actually a little creamy despite the lack of visible carbonation. There's alcohol, but it doesn't burn - it lends a smoothness that is comforting and enjoyable.
Final thoughts - tasty. Pleasant. Exotic. Enjoy!
