A-dark gold with a sticky white head and a good amount of bubbles

S-fresh grains a fruity hoppiness, though the fruits are more berry like that citrusy like usual. Caramel sugars as well.

T-comes in with a very smooth flavor of grains and caramel malts with only a slight hint of hops. It's very thick and creamy and does have a slight berry flavor to it. The ending has a good bitterness. No off flavors.

M-super creamy and heavy. Creamy finish

O-this really isn't too impressive as a Double IPA, but it's an amazing beer. It really tastes like a really high quality ale. It's just a really tasty beer, like something for the man that is just craving a beer after a long day. This is my favorite so far from the duo. I'd like them to keep it going.

Rhizing Bines is a phenomenal looking IPA. It pours out golden with a massive, fluffy white head that retains forever. The aroma is interesting, there's some caramel malts for sure, but there's some strange hopping going on here. Fruity hops are probably the main hop flavor I get here, along with some bright fruits. There's also an interesting nutty aspect going on here. The taste is very good. It's not a traditional IPA at all because of the unique hop flavors. I can tell they're imparted by the hops, there's just a such a big bright fruit flavor that is unique and blends perfectly with the caramel malts. The nuttiness comes through big as well. There's also a bit of floral and citrus going on with the hops. The mouthfeel is full and creamy, and the drinkability is outstanding. Overall, Rhizing Bines is one of the most unique IPAs I've had in a while. It's a sincerely wonderful beer, just don't expect a hop onslaught. It's something completely different from that.

2/17/13 Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada Collaboration | Rizing Bines | 750mL Bottle

Appearance- Brilliant copper color, translucent, beading CO2, foamy white head

Aroma- Surprisingly light hop aroma, smells more like a pilsner than anything else. Subtle grassy and herbal hops, slight earthyness, not a lot of malt character, slight graininess

Mouthfeel- smooth and drinkable, medium bodied, light co2, well balanced

Taste- Simply amazing. Easily the most unique IPA I’ve come across. It’s light and refreshing in the best of ways. The hops are light, grassy, and flowery. The malt is subtle and grainy. They work outstandingly well together. Tastes like honeydew, maybe lemon and melon

Residual- Lingering melon and flowery flavor, not coating or drying at all

Overall- I’m a huge fan of this beer. Rhizing Bines is one of those “wow” beers for me, probably because I’ve never tasted anything like it. Extremely unique, highly recommended.

big ol' 750 just for me. bottled on 1/25/13.

A: very bright gold body. super clear as well, I can see plenty of carbonization ripping to the surface. bright white head made up of the standard density of bubbles. retention is good. plenty of fat chunks of lacing left behind.

S: aroma is actually milder than the palate implies. intriguing... definitely floral, hop resins, definitely fruity melon, mild watermelon aromas. huge grainy undertones, nothing descript, but certainly present. mild alcohol.

T: sooo muuuuchhhh melonnn. people talk about things tasting like candy when describing American hops, but these 644 hops take it up a notch. a chewy grain throughout, slightly rye-like at times. a little bit of booze, but pretty negligent considering all this tasty hop flavor.

M: ample carb without being overwhelming. medium/full body brew.

D: my only serious complaint here is the aroma. just not nearly as intense as I would have liked it to be. with all the tasty melon nose, I really wonder what/if something happened during the dry-hopping procedure cause this doesn't seem to add up....perhaps that's just the nature of the 644 hop, but that doesn't seem to make any sense. anyway, seems like I am spending too much time pondering over this, if you see this and you are a fan of American hops pick it up.

Bottle into DFH "IPA" glass.

Crystal clear dark golden pour. Two finger off white, soapy head. Lacing is chunky and sticky all over the glass.

I get a touch of peppery spice, some pine and wet grass with a strange aroma I can't put my finger on, something you'd find in some Belgian beers.

Clean crisp taste. Grapefruit, apples, pine, some cucumber?? Bitter finish, zero alcohol. Very refreshing for a DIPA.

Light body, good carbonation.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a snifter. White head, moderate retention on a clear golden body. Aroma includes tangerine, tangelo, mango, papaya, some sweetness...like a fruity, pulpy, mongoey sweetness. Taste includes much of the same, with a nice bitterness and background sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Not really picking up the wheat but picking up notes of a lavender of sorts. Is this an flavor from a new hop? Not sure. Interesting flavors and quite tasty beer.

On tap at The Tavern On Liberty in PA...
For the appearance, it's a brilliantly clear golden color, with a fluffy, white head of foam. Superb lacing throughout the drinking experience. The aroma took me by surprise slightly with the level of maltiness and fruit esters. Upon tasting, I picked out what seemed to be a Concord grape flavor, as well as a very grainy/doughy aspect. The beer almost struck me as an APA at first, to be honest. That's not to imply that anything is wrong here. It's initial mouth feel is very full & juicy, but then it gives way to a very crisp, dry , and bitter finish. That's where the hops truly kick in and shine. Overall, this is an excellent and unique East-Coast style IPA. Looking forward to finding out more about this new hop variety as well. For fans of Two-Hearted and Resin.

Appearance: clear light honey colored. Huge billowy off white head on the pour.
Smell: juicy fruit as in the Wrigley gum is my first thought, with a nice bitter edge.
Taste: man....creamy, fruity, and bitterness in a near perfect combo. Very nicely done.
Overall: very pleasantly surprised. I expected an interesting and passable ipa. This is outstanding.

Cloudy orange gold body, topped by four fingers plus of snow white bubbly foam. Outstanding lace.

A fruit basket of citrus - grapefruit, lemon, oranges - mixed with some fresh pine to create an aroma which somehow says juicy.

Caramel core encircled by juicy fruits. Different fruit blend than your typical IPA. Pine. Bitterness lurks in the background. Very tasty. Non abrasive.

Creamy mouthfeel, a pleasant surprise in the style.

A different sort of IPA, different hops leading to different tastes, but highly enjoyable. Definitely worth trying one.

From a bottle into a pint glass. This beer was gold in color with a thick white head. There was a lot of lace.

Sweet malt aroma. Some melon. Piney hops.

Great taste! Caramel and honey. Cantaloupe. Piney, resiney hops. Very flavorful.

This was a smooth beer, not at all a hop bomb. I liked it.

Served from tap to glass. Has a light yellow color, with a nice thick head of about to fingers height. Has a bitter hoppy taste at the first sip with a sweet tastes and a smooth clean finish. Has a nice smooth mouthfeel, the sweet taste and bitterness dissipates rather quickly. Overall pretty good beer.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a clear, medium golden amber with a nice two finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, light stone and tropical fruit, only a hint of hops. Flavor is unusual, light stone fruit, light citrus, caramel malt, tropical fruit, piney hops. Very nice medium to heavy body with pleasant creaminess, surpising body for an IPA. Flavors are so well integrated that they are hard to identify, but blend together into a unique but distinctly IPA flavor. Finishes with the malt body fading away and revealing nice citrus and pine hops. Not as aromatically intense as a lot of west coast IIPAs, but still having an intense hops presence and hoppy finish. I enjoyed the hell out of this is an unusual and well integrated IIPA that is worthy of two great breweries. Not for IPA fans who prefer hops over malt; this is malty, but well balanced.

A: Pours a nice copper color with a finger or so of head. Lots of small chunks of head are present on the glass through consumption. Decent retention on the top of the beer.

S: Pine hop and malt aroma.

T: A subtle hop flavor present from front to back. Hops are more subdued than a typical fresh Dogfish (or Sierra for that matter), but have a very balanced and pleasant citrus flavor. Bitter finish.

M: Medium bodied and good feel on the tongue.

O: Again, nicely balanced and a change of pace if you were expecting the typical from DFH but still very good.

Poured from the bottle into an official Dogfish Head Ale glass.

A real nice super bronze and super crystal clear body, with some large cola like bubbles sticking to the edges of the glass. Head makes an easy four finger with an off white color, and a soapy like retention. As it settles, slow rising carbonation comes up just a little bit, lots of scattered like lacing, real nice looking beer.

An incredibly soft bouquet, and this very soft aromatic citrus grapefruit. It's pillow, toned down and very subtle. Herbal tea like action mixing in with the hop front.

Never had an Ipa taste like this before. Toned down juicy fruit, with an interesting crisp malt sense. Hop hits of orange and marmalade and citrus. Finish has an interesting toasty quality. Very controlled mix of bitterness and sweetness on the finish.

Overall it's a real interesting take on an IPA, with a real sort of mish mash of Enligsh herbality, and a hint of citrus American hop profiles. Very light and toasty crisp too. Very easy drinking, and also memorable.

Pours clear gold, 1 inch pillowy head retains well.

Smells of piney dry hops and grassy malts. Hints of citrus.

Flavor is caramel and dry grassy malts with a mix of piney fruity hops and a dry hop bitterness.

Medium body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A really nice flavorful ale with a unique balance of characteristics. Kind of like the best of DFH 60 and SN Pale. Works really well, a must try.

Bottled on 01/25/13. Tulips for serving.

Tangerine honey color. Lovely lacing. Fluffy white head was almost two inches in height at its apex and eventually fell to rocky foam at the surface.

Nuances of citrus and tropical fruits brought about in a pungent, but not overly bitter way. It's hoppy and strange and unique, all in a good way. Peaches, papaya, grapefruit, apricot, and light pine. Awesome hop-driven nose. The malts are honeyed and they match up well. Very nice.

Holy jeebus, the one note that I didn't pick up in the nose is standing out above everything else in the taste--melon! Canteloupe and watermelon notes are upfront, juicy, sweet, and delicious. Papaya and apricot and some floral notes round out the unique hop profile. More honey-like flavors get in line with the hoppiness and push some maltiness to the front. Very delicate for an Imperial IPA. Great complexity.

Smooth in the mouth and in the swallow. Light sizzle of carbonation pops at the back of the throat. The levels are right. The mouthfeel is excellent.

Bash all you want, but you might not know what you're talking about; but the truth of it is, Dogfish Head makes killer Double IPAs. Add this one to your want list. You might not know that it should be there.

Bottle poured in Pilsner glass.

A - yellow/orange, 2 inch creamy, foamy head and lots of lacing.

S - Lemon, floral hops, grapes, piney, bread, caramel.

T - Orange and pine. floral hop, malty flavor, dry finish.

M - Hops and malts, light body, mild carbonation. Aftertaste is malty and sweet.

O - I really enjoyed this beer. Very drinkible and smooth. Not as good as the original Life and Limb but still an awesome beer!

Appearance: Poured from a bomber. Darker than straw. I get a couple inches of head that lingers through the experience.

Smell: Malt dominates the smell. Sweet and wet hay.

Taste: The hops come through, here, especially as the beer warms, and these appear particularly in the aftertaste. I wish that the hops were more present in the first taste.

Mouthfeel: oily and thick. I like this, especially.

Overall: a good beer, but I paid fourteen bucks and I don't think it lives up to the sticker price. Maybe my expectations were too high given the breweries involved and the price.

A: pours a clear and light gold with a large and dense ivory head with good retention into a Duvel Tulip
S: smells of earthy and herbal hops, slight pine and a bit of citrus with a bit of caramel. slight toasty bread smell as well
T: herbal and earthy hops up front with some caramel sweetness. very green and woody hop flavor plus a bit of wheat creaminess swallow brings bready malt, caramel sweetness and a bit of slightly minty hop bitterness
M: slightly prickly but soft carbonation with a medium but slightly creamy mouthfeel. solid finish, not drying but not overly wet
O: very interesting. good flavors and a bit of a departure from a west coast style beer. I like it and the complexity is there. Definitely a nice twist on the style and it's great to see another collaboration between SN and DFH.

A - Pours with two fingers of white foam on top of a clear, light copper colored body. The head settles at a moderate pace and leaves nice lace.

S - Pine, lemon, and tropical fruit hop aromas with a touch of malt in the background.

T - Lots of pine hop character up front with bready malt and toffee in the middle. Finishes with an interesting lime character and moderate bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderately strong carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - Not bad, it isn't as pungently hoppy as I hoped it might be but it still works nicely. The aroma is somewhat weak but the flavor is more robust. There is an odd limey note both in the flavor and aroma that helps it to stand out from the crowd.

750 ml bottle, bottled on 1/25/13. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours a clear amber color with about an inch frothy off-white head that stayed around for a long time. There's also a lot of lacing. Aroma is on the light side, it smells like herbal, pine and citrusy hops, grainy malt, nuts and an earthy aroma. I had to let this brew sit out a while for the aroma to open up more. It tastes like herbal/grassy hops, wheat/grainy malt, nuts, light citrusy hops, sweet malt and some melon (honeydew). Finish is more sweet than bitter. It's an interesting tasting beer, and I'm liking it more the longer I drink it. There's good balance between the hops and malt in this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and coating with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this brew, I think it's definitely worth trying. $11.99 a bottle.

Riding both on the cusp of daring experimentaiton and embedded in proven technique in full IPA flavor- the heads, hearts, and hands of Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada have put together this racy imperial IPA that's as refreshing as it is packed with punch.

Bright with deep gold colors, the beer hinges on light amber as the light seems to make the beer glow. Zesty streams of carbonation build a frothy white head that keeps the beer looking bright, lively and almost champagne-like. Long-lasting retention and broken lace accompanies the beer through the bulk of the session.

Sharp and perfumy aromas, led by grapefruit, lemon, and floral notes are all strung together by light honey and caramel malt underpinnings for a scent that's hop-balanced ever so slightly. Light breadiness with a twangy-tart scent keeps the nose guessing at the subtle surprises here that's not in your ordinary IPA.

Soft caramel sweetness gives the fruity hop taste a candied taste that's similar to honey-dipped or light confectioner's sugar. Supporting bread tastes add a buffer to the hops to come. The ale's middle palate brings on the grapefruit and orange peels that's expected from highly hopped American ales. But the taste extends into the herbal and lemony world of Sorachi Ace and Nelson Sauvin hops. Coming together, there's a sense of sassafras, saffron, ginger, white wine, and almost-gin that accompanies the citrus fruits with a lot of pizzazz! Medium bodied, the malts never really try to balance the beer and cause a fuller effect, but instead favors a drier and lighter palate that offers up a sense of refreshment early on and only increases heading into finish. As the hop character takes hold, the malts continue to recede until the finish of hop dryness, alcohol warmth, and zesty herbal tartness ensures complete cleanliness, crispness, and refreshment to close the session.

Where the Sierra Nevada taste is grounded, simple, and pure; the excitement of Dogfish experimentation is alive and well- but without Dogfishing it up too much. The somber recklessness that's demonstrated here is nothing short of wonderful!
