Searched pretty hard to find this one, and a buddy was fortunate enough to come across a bottle in Tampa.
A- Light orange to copper with offwhite head of about 2 fingers. Fair retention and good lacing. A little light in color for the style, but looks very pleasing overall.
S- Surprisingly, not much to speak of here. One of the weaker smelling DIPAs I have ever come across. Some pine and floral hops along with bicuits and wheat barley. Disappointing
T- More intense than nose. Earthy hops with a wheat bready malt base. A little more malt than expected. A bit of graininess that you don't normally have in this style. Some fruits and resinous notes, along with caramel. Some hop flavors that i am unfamiliar with...must be the Bravo. Not bad, just seems a little off. Has a sort of medicinal overtone
M- Very nice feel to this one. Dry finish, mid body, big carbonation, and hardly a trace of the 8% noticable.
O- Seems to have more of a DFH take to it than SN, but maybe I'm looking into it too much. While I respect the risk and collaboration effort, it seems to fall a bit short on the flavor scheme for me.

Served from tap to glass. Has a light yellow color, with a nice thick head of about to fingers height. Has a bitter hoppy taste at the first sip with a sweet tastes and a smooth clean finish. Has a nice smooth mouthfeel, the sweet taste and bitterness dissipates rather quickly. Overall pretty good beer.

750ml DFH-embossed brown bottle, purchased from Whole Food SoMa in San Francisco.
Pours a pleasant bright orange-golden colour, with a fine, slightly filmy white head. Lacing is specked and intricate, falling away in great streaks down the glass. Body looks pleasantly fine, and holds misty, powdery carbonation. Overall, it's a good-looking beer.
Nose is less potent than I expected, but pleasant enough. Sharp, green hop characters give a resiny edge to the beer, while a rounded caramel character provides the bulk. There's some wheaty, husked grain characters which come through too, giving a raw, slightly rustic edge. The hops are present at least, but not particularly potent.
Taste is similar: big caramel malty sweetness provides the basis of this beer, while hops cut through a little but never become dominant. Light lemon-citrus characters, a musky, slightly salt-saline tone and some brisk peppery herbal characters on the back. Finish is dry, but with lingering medicinal herbal characters. It's not bad, but it's not really inspired.
Feel is light but smooth, kept in check by the hop character and a very fine carbonation.
Overall, this is decent stuff. It's quite well-balanced, pretty drinkable even for 8% ABV, and with a good amount of flavour. It is a little bit generic though, and in the end does feel a bit like a beer we've all had before.

eyes...
a little darker than golden straw, one nice finger of fluffy white head, good lacing, a mere smattering of bubbles populating the glass, pretty good looking, not much else to really say...
nose...
husky wheat aroma with some herbal/floral notes, a touch of honey, a lemony spritz thing going on, smells sort of musty almost like saison-ish, I don't love it... or hate it, it's ok.
taste etc...
sublime body, not quite silky, not quite prickly... all those things in harmony, a really great feel, full and malty, coats the mouth, the flavor is pretty mild, a nice fabric of bitterness and florals but a bit subdued, the ABV is absolutely hidden in this, this is pleasant.. and that is about it
verdict?
tough one, obviously this is well crafted, the ABV is barely an issue until later, it is balanced like mad... but... but... it just doesn't do it, something seems missing, it is not bad in any way but it just leaves me wanting something more, it finishes a bit better than it starts (some mango flavors I am noticing)... but... I dunno, this one falls a bit short for me

I was super excited to try this beer. I have had the Life & Limb # 2 several times and I was always more than satisfied. This one was not as good!!
Appearance: Golden in color, much like any IPA or Double IPA
Smell: Interesting, I detected a good amount of hops but also a good amount of malt.
Taste: This beer had good hop flavor and a malty backbone, not a bad beer at all!!
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, lots of carbonation, perhaps due to the "life" part of the beer!!
Overall: This beer was pretty good but its an IPA so I can not see myself aging it. I am not sure why these companies decided they needed another IPA, I mean IPA is the thing now a days but why sacrifice an exceptional beer for just another IPA? I don't get it!!

Served in a snifter at Firkin.
It's taken me a while to do so, but I've finally gotten around to trying this stuff. It pours a clear amber-brass topped by over a finger of cream-white foam. The nose comprises greens, light grass, and very light biscuit. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a hint of honey, some light pine needle, and a touch of extra bitterness in the grass area. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a solid, if borderline boring, IPA. I'm not entirely sure if it's a proper representation of the merging between the hop notions of DFH and SN, but it's enjoyable enough.

Picked this up for helping out my boss. Thanks boss! Bottle 1/28/13. Here's hoping we're still good.
A: Pours a hazy orange with fairly zesty carbonation. Bit hazy. Two fingers khaki head, per the style. Good retention. Lacing is mediocre.
S: For some reason I thought German. Then I saw there was wheat in the beer and understood. Lightly citric hops, and a bit of that soft wheat smell in the nose. Banana esters and is that...strawberry? Tiniest little bit of pine right off the surface of the beer.
T: Very, very fruit forward. I don't think I was wrong with the berry or the banana in the nose. Fruit takes a turn for the darker in the mid palate, with subtle hints of raisined darkness peeking through. Soapiness in the end palate, with a rush of berriedfruit before being consumed by the familiar citrus/drying bitterness.
M: Medium bodied. Not a big backbone of carbonation, and that leaves the beer feeling a bit slick in the palate. The softness of the wheat further accentuates this, I think.
O: What a neat collaboration. Dogfish head makes some crazy stuff and it's always interesting to try and pick out the subtle and unexpected flavors involved. Sierra Nevada is a bastion of brewing, but I think this one has DFH's marks all over it.

1 pt 9.4 fl oz bomber into a tulip glass
A - pours a cloudy orange ruby color with a frothy two finger head. Good retention.
S - dark fruit/fig, candied sugar malt.
T - the hops missing from the smell hit mid swig. Very dry finish. Warming brings a hint of sweetness. Nothing in the flavor profile is overpowering. By the end of the bomber, there seems to be a lot happening, but remains well balanced, especially for an IPA. Slight tinge of alcohol and pine.
M - slightly watery and is prickly at first, but smooths out well with some time. Altogether pretty solid.
O - an interesting combination, and ultimately very drinkable, the initial smell/taste confliction not withstanding. And, yes, I created the word confliction.

Bright transparent orange in body with everlasting mountainous head on top. Aroma of sharp pear, booze, citrus rind, some cereal. Tastes of thick citrus, evergreens, vague honey, booze. Thick, chewy and cloying. Big body with medium carbonation. Hmmm, maybe my expectations were too high.

this is a collaboration pair I really hope continue working together for a long time. this beer, while maybe less ambitious than the original life and limb, is still an excellent offering. it pours a golden honey color with a fluffy and lacy white head as high as the pour is aggressive. the nose is more balanced than expected for the style. the grain is fresh, lightly toasted, and semisweet, a nice contribution. the hops are on the fresh side, plenty bitter, but with some curious fruit undertones. the fruit is there in the flavor too, somewhere short of an orange, zesty and bright, and there is more of a pine flavor as it moves toward the finish. cereal grains and caramel back it all up, and balance the hops right through the last sip. the alcohol is also well hidden, and appreciably low for a joint work of these two breweries. id call this easy drinking, although many wouldn't. its right on medium in terms of body, a little light on the carbonation, and thoroughly conflicted in the finish. not sure this fits the double/imperial ipa bill too well, but it is a very fresh, very well made bottle of beer. probably even came in a little below my expectations, but its one I would gladly drink again. the hop profile and the sweeter malts work well together. best consumed cold though, it broke down a little in the hot sun, as is to be expected.

From a bottle into a pint glass. This beer was gold in color with a thick white head. There was a lot of lace.
Sweet malt aroma. Some melon. Piney hops.
Great taste! Caramel and honey. Cantaloupe. Piney, resiney hops. Very flavorful.
This was a smooth beer, not at all a hop bomb. I liked it.

Bottled: 01/28/2013, 750 ml into my trusty DFH signature glass.
A - Pours a super clean golden amber body with lots of rising carbonation. Massive amounts of bone-white foam that settles down slowly leaving behind a crazy amount of sticky lacing. This is one of those beers that just coats the entire glass with foam even with a sip left and constant swirling.
S - Hmmmm....I'm having a hard time getting past the word "hmmm". Kind of an odd mix up of fruited dish soap, piney hops, melon, grass, and wet dog. Let me clarify on the wet dog thing. I'm not talking about the kind where Fido ran around in the yard during a rain storm and tracked in what you can only pray is mud and he now smells of damp newspaper and rotting banana peels. I'm talking about the kind where he just got a bath with that special doggy shampoo. So the good kind? Pretty boring though.
T - Pine, grass, melon, and a wheaty finish. Its sweet for sure, but not as malty as a 90 minute. Its kind of got a floral/herbal thing going on. Lasting bitterness on the finish. Mouth feel is slick and oily with perfect carbonation so that is a huge plus in terms of drinkability.
O - It took nearly three months to see a shelf in CT. I was pretty excited to try this despite the reviews since I am a huge DFH fanboy and SN has always impressed me. This was not a great beer and a far cry from the awesomeness that was the first Life & Limb collaboration. Its tasty enough and quite drinkable, but I suppose I am on the bandwagon who expected a bit more out of this one.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium copper in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some amber highlights. The beer has a two finger tall creamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a couple of medium patches of thin film including some medium sized bubbles, a very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Upfront there is a sweetness to the overall aroma of this beer with some moderate caramel malts and floral notes. Moderate aromas of pine/resin and citrus/grapefruit rind hops are also present.
T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of sweet malts with caramel and honey sweetness. There are some moderate flavors of floral, pine/resin, and citrus/grapefruit rind hops that impart a moderate amount of lingering bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with slightly less than moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky and syrupy.
O: I thought this beer was interesting but is really just a little too malty and too sweet for a DIPA in my opinion. There is an oddness to the mouthfeel that I did not really enjoy.

Appearance: The clear amber colored liquid is capped by a modest head that leaves some streaks of lacing behind
Smell: Honeydew melon and resinous hops, with a floral aspect; pith and pine in the background
Taste: Opens with a honeydew, toasted wheat and shortbread malt flavor that is quickly joined by the resinous, piney hops; after the swallow, there is an additional bit of honey which adds more sweetness; despite the malt forward character of this beer, there is plenty of bitterness that brings up the rear
Mouthfeel: Very thick, almost syrupy, with low carbonation
Overall: This is a very different beer but to think of it in DIPA terms really leads one down the wrong path; though I don't like many sweet DIPAs, I am finding this one to be rather interesting; not sure about the mouthfeel, however

I don't know how to rate this beer. Said to be a DIPA, it seemed more like a saison to me. Nice deep gold color with a fluffy white head, it smelled of Belgian yeast. Tasted like a pretty good saison, too. DIPA? Seriously? Maybe the fact the it's almost three months old is responsible, but I can't imagine this beer ever having the requisite strong hop character. It just arrived in Houston about 10 days ago. Medium body and quite drinkable. As a saison. Go figure.

Bottled on Jan 25/13. Poured in to tulip.
A - Medium yellow; translucent. Two fingers of thick cream coloured head.
S - A big malt sweetness up front and only a moderate bitterness present. Caramel, pine and a peppery spice profile are present.
T - Very balanced overall for a DIPA. A big caramel malt sweetness is accompanied by a moderate bitterness with pine, spice/pepper and a big musty/dank profile. Fairly unpleasant overall.
M - Medium body with some stickiness. Moderate carbonation.
O - I didn't enjoy this one at all and I am not sure I could have finished the bomber had I forced myself to. Very disappointing.

750ml, bottled 1/28/13
Pours a nice medium amber with a pleasant off-white head and great lacing. (4)
Paper and cardboard on the nose. Pretty oxidized but not completely brutal. Maybe some citrusy hops, but not much. (2)
Flavor is more of the same, super lackluster. I was expecting a lot more. The oxidation just takes over. Stale and papery. It's all malt and blunt bitterness. Maybe a touch of fruity and spicy hops, but nothing worth writing home about. Mouthfeel has medium-low carb with smooth, fine bubbles. (2, 3.5)
Pretty pathetic for a 3-month-old beer. I should know better than buying Dogfish Head IPAs. Drank half, other half down the drain. (1)

I picked this up at Shady McGrady's enjoyed chilled from th 750ml in a goblet.
The color is deeply golden hued with good clarity and thick pale cream which clings as lace w/ fine bead. The smell of almost berry-like yeast ester with light herbal hop accent and gentle aroma of malt w/ low alcohol ester. The texture is semi-dry with mild bitterness and full malt cushion with moderately high carbonation and relatively dry finish.
This Imperial IPA has a taste that is fruity mixed with a floral and zesty herbal hop taste profile with flavors that lead to more of a yeast and malt juxtoposition mid palate with semi-sweet flavor which is lightly caramel tinged from the malt and nutty with a slight citrus element and bitter hop taste as it finishes w/ more pepper in the end.
Overall I was pleased with the taste considering how it was marketed which is a nice blend of East and West coast style iPA's w/ more body yet still finishes on the dry side w/out having an all out hop assault on your palate.

Golden amber in color with a big, pillowy head. Very nice retention and lacing. Aroma is muted and very un-IPA-like. A vinous note evocative of a sweet white wine. Slight floral hop note. This bottle is over 3 months old, so I'm not surprised that the hops have faded, but the aroma is uninspired in general.
Quite sweet on the palate. This is absolutely not an IPA. Tastes a bit like another Dogfish Head beer - Midas Touch. Note of honey with mild fruity esters. A bit of metallic note in the finish, lingering in the aftertaste. At first, I kind of liked this, but I'm less and less enthusiastic the more I drink. Mouthfeel is at least well-suited to the flavor profile. It's a bit syrupy, also well-carbonated but soft and smooth.
This had promise, but it's kind of a mess of unbalanced sweetness and a lifeless aroma. Especially at a $10+ price point for a 750ml bottle, I can't recommend this.

Again a glowing orange brew from the united forces of Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada, Rhizing Bines is where the hops meet two different hops Bravo and #644...full thicket of creamy textured head billowing with a great intricate lacing as it settles down a bit. Aroma has intense citric hops with sweetness glowing from the basis of the beer, it feels so right in the beer realm something I can't complain about when these two breweries come together. Each one has their strengths...together the force is that much stronger. A whisping collision of hops and alcohol with complex grains, really brings it together a bit of harshness when the collision occurs. I'm getting soft complex wheat with the estate caramel malts character shining thru, mind you these hopes aren't the freshest varietals this was bottled on 1/25/13, which indicates some time has passed I would have loved to try I the first week in distribution. I just lit up a Camacho Diploma cigar with these hops they are a perfect marriage, the malts and hops that are starting to fade blend well with the spicy peppery sweet Honduran tobacco. Mouthfeel finishes with trace alcohol burn and bittering hops all day, it's a true hophead marriage goes great with both the cigar and the Dr. John New Orleans Native Son album I'm listening to. Overall I'm glad I was able to try hopefully next time a bit fresher, the production on this album is great the Black Keys got involved with Dr. John how can he get any better add in some Black Keys...now the beer again keep it up both breweries are booming for a very good reason excellent products and marketing.

Semi hazed orange glow with an extremely clingy 2 finger white head. Smells extremely malty. Butter and toffe covered rolls come to mind. A strange hoppy scent comes in from underneath this of tropical fruits. When combined with the malty nose it almost has a citric fruit marmalade type of scent.
Very delicate tasting brew. Medium bodied but thick feeling in the mouth. Malt extremely prevalent throughout the beer with flavors of toffee caramel and caramelized sugar. Finishes with a bright citric and floral hop character and a big dose of alcohol. Alcohol and malt flavors linger in the mouth. Lots of dried sugared fruit tastes and lots of pineapple but overall very malty for a beer that used two different hopping techniques.

Enjoyed this 750ml bottle out of a Belgian snifter glass.
A: Pours a copper hue with a 2-finger white head that slowly dissipates into a solid lace leaving a great trail all the way down the glass.
S: Slight hoppy aroma with a citrus background.
T: Similar to the smell there is a hoppy flavor with a decent malt and caramel background.
M: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: Not my favorite DFH brew – but it was crisp and refreshing and went down without a fight – worthy of a try but not something I would grab again.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a Russian River pint glass.
A: Bright copper in color with some haziness (chill haze?) and a two-finger white head that lasts. Visible carbonation on the low side.
S: Rich maltiness, grassy/earthy hops...that's about it. Low aroma overall.
T: Bready and pilsner malts that give the beer an almost chewy aspect. Some fruitiness (banana? Yeast esters?) and clove near the end. Moderately bitter in the hang.
M: Slightly heavy body, good carbonation sensation, alcohol noticeable but doesn't detract.
O: This is in no sense of the word an IPA, let alone DIPA. A poor, poor example of style, but not an exceptionally objectionable beer. Not a drain-pour, but don't go in with high expectations.

Pours a slightly hazy yellow gold color with a massive foamy 3 finger off white head that didn't move and faded extremely slowly, leaving very good foamy lacing coating the sides and rings as it goes down. Very bubby, the head had a ton of bubbles in it and there were bubbles racing up the middle imitating champagne.
Smells quite malty for a DIPA, with grains, caramel and some husk up front, followed by apple, orange peel, citrus hops, citrus fruits, light pine cones, bread and faint booze; I was shocked at how weak the hop aroma was in a DIPA made by Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada. This did not smell like a DIPA, or even an IPA for that matter; imperial lager perhaps, doppelbock maybe, as the malt profile, caramel and candy sugar sweetness were more like a malt liquor than a beer and certainly not what I expected.
Tastes was equally as puzzling, as the malt was not the backbone but the dominant flavor; even for an English IPA this would have missed the mark in my opinion. Flavor consists of malt, grains, honey, buttered wheat bread, caramel, tea leaf, herbs, brown sugar, syrup, orange peel, lemon, floral hops, light spices like coriander and pepper, peat moss, and some trailing oily hop bitterness like a Sorachi Ace hop blast. A really strange combo that seems like the compounds are out of order and could work, but just didn’t.
Mouthfeel is smooth and on the slick side, with mild fizzy carbonation, a medium chewy body that let’s off a fruit-bread flavor and a bitterness that reminds you that this was designed as an IPA; the hop flavors never get to where they should be, and while this contains the 8% ABV well, the beer is just a mess overall and not what you’d expect for an American IPA.
This was an expensive bomber, and sadly did not justify the price ($14). Not sure what Bravo or 644 hops should taste like, but this was not an impressive IPA; in fact, considering the collaboration of brewers that made this beer I’ll go as far as stating that this was a major disappointment. I kept waiting for it to pick up and get better, but it never did. IPA in this case stands for “I’m Plain Astounded”…and not in a good way. These are two of my favorite breweries, but this is not a good beer.

A - A clear golden brown color with huge amounts of carbonation. Even a proper pour gives it a huge white foamy head.
S - The nose on this one hits you with a sweet, crisp, citrusy aroma. Good smell, but a little musty on the backend. That could be my fault; it was bottled on 1/29/13 and I drank it 4/13/13. So not the freshest IPA I've ever had, but it still smells great.
T - A lot of bitter hoppy notes. Then a huge caramel maltiness that settles on the tongue. Good taste, but nothing too significant.
M - A thin, bubbly body. Leaves behind a little bit of a thick coating in the mouth.
O - A nice and easy to drink imperial IPA. Overall a good beer, but I'm not sure if I'd buy it again. Definitely not disappointed, as I love almost all DFH brews, but this one should be a "try it once".
