Pours a very cloudy, heavy golden color with less than one finger of white fluffy head with decent retention.

The scent was very complex, sweet fruit, likely pomegranate, toasted grains, honey, some notes of alcohol.

Like the scent the taste is also complex. There was the sweet pomegranate flavor, raisins, sweet honey, some bready notes, and a noticeable alcohol presence.

Medium body, smooth and kind of creamy, low to moderate carbonation.

This was like nothing I've had before. Very complex flavor with new ingredients I haven't tasted in a beer before. This might be something I would get again if in the area.

Dogfish Head description from website: Our latest ancient ale is based on a beer the Etruscans of ancient Italy would have been drinking around 800 B.C.. It's made with pomegranate, raisins, hazelnut flour, capelli senatore (an heirloom grain), 3 types of honey, gentian root and tree resin.

Enjoyed at the brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, DE

A: half finger head on a murky golden brown body making me think of old bananas.

S: very musty malts with medicinal grape and strawberry hint of menthol as well opening the sinuses a bit.

T: again very metallic and medicinal with grape notes lingering deep into the aftertaste. Opens with a nice malt profile moving to a very spicy and fruity finish.

M: medium and creamy body and moderate carbonation.oily, coating the palate.

Overall: this is a strange and unique beer that grows on you as consumed. Worth trying as is the case with most in this series.

Serving type: on-tap
