Notes:
Urkontinent is a Belgian-style dubbel that begins with Pilsner, Munich and Chocolate malts and Belgian Dark Candi syrup.

Then we add unique ingredients from around the world: Wattleseed from Australia imparts chocolate, coffee and hazelnut notes to the beer. Toasted amaranth from South America gives it an earthy, grainy flavor and a little additional roast flavor. Green rooibos from Africa contributes a floral aroma and slight astringency. Myrica gale from Europe supplements the bitterness from minimal hopping. Hiveplex Honey from California adds a subtle sweetness while maintaining the dry finish.

The careful combination of all these ingredients creates a complex, dark Belgian-style ale with wonderful coffee and chocolate-covered cherry flavors. The roastiness of the malt and wattleseed melds with the fruity esters from the yeast, the floral notes from the rooibos, and the malty yet dry signature of a Belgian dubbel. Urkontinent is perfect to enjoy with friends as the weather begins to cool.

A: Pours brown with a finger of beige head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: Spices up front with candy sugar, bubblegum, and some sweet fruity aromas. There's a licorice-like quality to the nose as well before a finish of sweet breads.

T: Spices up front here as well with a small candy sugar presence before hearty, spicy bread flavors kick in. The finish is bready with a slight alcohol presence.

M: Medium body with lowish carbonation, this beer is a bit under-carbonated and under-attenuated.

O: An interesting beer, overall. Not bad, but not particularly good, either. I'd like a bit more depth all around with a lighter body.

Bottle shared by Steve, 750ml into a tulip.

Brown body with some blacker hues. Tan head, with good lacing and retention. Nose of cola, earthy and herbal, faint chocolate and molasses. Tastes around the same, herbal, cocoa, cola and earthy malts. Medium body, with a light spicing into the finish. Interesting offering and maybe I was too drunk to appreciate the subtleties of this, but this like a lot of DFH beers suffers from having just too many different things going on.

Well, here comes DFH again with a "hey, you know what would be cool to do?" beer. Dragging a bunch of ingredients from around the globe was already done with Pangaea, but they felt they needed to revisit it after discovering some more exotics spices, herbs and rocks they could toss into a brew kettle. Well, maybe not rocks, but I have no idea what half these ingredients are.

A pretty beer, with a tightly wound head starting big and tall and reducing to a quarter inch. It stays like that on top of a deep brown beer which is remarkably clear.

Earthy and woodsy bitterness with a touch of honey sweetness and medicinal herbs. This is evident in the nose and on the tongue. The taste is a little sweeter than the smell indicates with additional complexities in the form of carob and black cherries. The part of the taste that I really didn't like is that the medicinal herbs make a strong showing in the aftertaste.

I really do appreciate the way DFH blows past convention and I enjoy their forays into exotic flavors, but I really wish they'd get back to basics every now and then and deliver a standard style of beer and show us all that they can brew it better than most breweries. I know they can, but so do they so I guess they believe they have nothing to prove along that vein.

Perhaps if everyone would stop raving about EVERYTHING they put out just because they are who they are, we'd get something made with local ingredients and flavors.

Pours out a really dark brown amber ale with 1/4 finger of slightly off-white suds. Slight lacing. Bunch of crap floating around on top.
Aroma is caramel and charred malts and some belgian yeast but not prominent. Almost a dark chocolate with rum raisin bread comes out as it warms up.
Taste is watery. Only thing you taste here is water and some sugar malts. Aftertaste is charred malts but very faint. The only good thing here is the alcohol is hidden very well.
Mouthfeel is plain jane. Watery and bland but no alcohol burn at all. What a strange drink.
Overall not anything I will buy again. It's not terrible but for a DFH is't subpar.

Deep chestnut color, close to black. Big fluffy off white head. Striking nose of dark belggian candi sugars, chocolate covered rum soaked raisins, vanilla beans, cocoa nibs, sweet cream, and rich roasted coffee. Hope the beer is as complex as the nose.

Very big complex beer, but it only faintly reminds me of a belgian dubbel. Massive effervescent body. Starts with rich bitter coffee notes and a touch of chocolate. Faint charcoal throughout. Some astringency and coarseness on the finish. A lot of the flavors found in the nose can be found in parts of the beer. Rich creaminess compliments alot of the darker roasted flavors. Belgian candi sugars present a tiny bit of trartness. Touch of dirty earthiness in the mix plays off the coffee like presence. Dry finish with some soft tannins. California honey shines through a tiny bit near the end of the sip as a soothing semi-sweetness.

For such a big complex beer with so many nuances, all the flavors go together extremely well. Tons of layers of flavor yet they're all so concise. Just picked up faint touches of dark fruit. An extremely good beer but a little off for the style so I'll have to judge it a little lower. Tastes more like a porter or stout with the body of a belgian dubbel. Unlike anything I've ever had before but quite delicious.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown color and a mostly clear texture. There was a big, tan-colored, long-lasting, creamy head. Not much lacing.

S: An enticing aroma of spices, yeast, malt, and other sweet ingredients.

T: Tasted of Belgian yeast, a little malt, a wide assortment of oddball spices, a little coffee, some chocolate, and cherry. An interesting flavor that grows on you after awhile.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Like everything DFH does, this beer is kind of out there, but drinkable nonetheless.

Poured from a bottle into a Duvel tulip

A- pours black with a two finger slightly offwhite head...too light to call it tan, too dark to call it white. So, split the difference.

S- sweet brown sugar, a little bit of spiciness...hey, not bad!

T- lots of sweet brown sugar flavor coming through...a little bit of rye-style spice in the back end. I have no idea what most of the ingredients listed on the bottle are, so I can't comment on whether or not they come through well or not. I think it's overly sweet, though

M- body is relatively thin

O- interesting idea, but I think this one was trying to be different just for the hell of it. Can't recall having a Belgian-inspired brew from Dogfish, and I don't think I'd have another

I made a special trip over to the DFH Alehouse over in Falls Church just to try this one.

Served in a snifter.

A: Poured a dark brown, with ruby red highlights around the edges, and a soft brown ring for a head. Looks fairly thick.

S: Lots of complex notes of chocolate, dark fruit, and only a tinge of Belgian funk... if you want to actually use that word in this setting.

T: I got a good bit of chocolate and dark fruit, along with DFH's signature honey-like taste profile poking through the Belgiany goodness. The tinge of grainy bitterness on the finish made this very reminiscent of cake batter.

M: Very creamy and thick and I found myself in awe of the fact that, despite marketing-speak descriptors and ingredients such as Candy sugar, chocolate-covered cherry, and coffee, this was very tempered from a dessert, Valentine beer perspective. Thanks you DFH for not brown sugarizing this!

O: This was my kind of Dubbel: Not too sweet or Belgiany, but just with a nice, creamy, drinkable Belgian Ale.

Bottle from korguy123. Poured in to Duvel tulip.

A - Medium brown, almost completely opaque aside from a very slight amber glow around the edges. Half a finger of brown head with good retention.

S - Dark fruit, Belgian yeast, chocolate, roast and earthy aromas. A lot going on in the nose but everything integrates so well.

T - Roast, chocolate and Belgian yeast up front that give way to cherries, spice, sweet candy and some nutty flavours. Some tea-like flavours are present as well. A decent sweetness exists that is well balanced by a slight bitterness and some warming alcohol. The finish is somewhat dry.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O - Very good. Tough to drink a whole bomber but I made my way through it.

A: Pours what initially appears to be a near opaque black with a thin, fizzy, rapidly dissipating khaki mousse, but when held up to the light, this ale reveals a clear garnet hue.

S: Aromas of dark chocolate, figs, raisin, tea, herbs, roasted grain, and roasted nuts fill the nose.

T: Notes of dark chocolate, candy sugar, roasted grain, wildflower honey, caramel, hazelnut, coffee, roasted chestnuts, raisins, figs, black walnut, dried black cherry, tea, and mild herbs fill the mouth. The finish is rich and long with notes of roasted grain, chocolate, honey, nuts, and herbs.

M: Medium-to-full in body, firm, thick, and dry. Carbonation is relatively crisp. Has a very substantial feeling in the mouth. Alcohol is surprisingly subdued compared to most of the stronger Dogfish Head brews.

O: This is a very complex ale, one that demonstrates Dogfish Head's anarchic approach very well. If you're not a fan of Dogfish Head's use of nontraditional ingredients, then you probably should avoid this beer, but if you enjoy novel approaches to traditional ales, then this will likely delight you. One of Dogfish Head's more likable, cohesive efforts overall. I hope they bring this one back.

Served in a DFH signature glass, brew pours a dark cola brown under a creamy tan head. Sweet roasted malt forward aroma exudes relatively subtle notes of cocoa nibs, rich dark chocolate dessert and perhaps vanilla. Funny that this has been included in the "Dubbel" category. Not at all the taste I'd expect from a Dubbel. But then again, that's Dogfish in all its wonderfulness, and I dig it...Roasted malt backbone seems to set the right stage for all the wonderful sounding ingredients I've never had before (with the exception of honey). Cocoa and lightly spicy flavor waft over the palate into a crisp dry finish. I'd love to try this with a maple bacon cheeseburger and see what happens.

Appearance: Medium brown head, clean body with no sediment, and a warm brown color.

Smell: Lots of things going on here...spices, roasty, lots of sweet smells coming off (chocolate, coffee, molasses).

Taste: Very smooth for a beer with so much going on in it. Sweet, malty, with a slight spice to it too (herb not pepper spice).

Mouthfeel: A little thin but pretty normal.

Overall: Pretty good, I could definitely drink more of this come fall! I haven't liked much of Dogfish Head's weird combinations of ingredients in the last 2 years but this one came together really well.

Served in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a deep brown color with a billowy light tan head. The head had a moderate amount of lacing and gave way to a medium amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was quite roasty. Roasted malt with nice hints of espresso and chocolate. A lighter sweetness comes to the nose as well; lightly molasses in nature with good hints of burnt sugar.

Taste – The taste started out much sweeter then I initially expected from the nose. The brew started with a great sweet flavor of brown sugar and molasses complimenting the very roasty malt flavor. The roasted malt becomes more brown bread as the taste advances, with some light notes of carob and chocolate coming to the tongue. At the end the taste some Belgian spicy flavors enter the scene and overall leave a rather roasty and burnt sugar and spice flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is normal. A thicker body would have been better for the roasty flavor of the brew. The carbonation level is on the just below average side and is very suiting; allowing all the roasty flavors to sit on the tongue and be sensed.

Overall – A very nice darker brew with interesting taste combinations and transitions. Well worth a try if you have the chance.

Appeared black w/ brown/reddish edges. Little carbonation. Strong chocolate aroma with lots of malt.

The taste had kind of a tanginess to it, but also some banana notes. You get some alcohol warming, but not so much to overwhelm. Some carbonation at end. I didn't get any of the honey flavor that the label mentioned. Thick mouthfeel, very pleasant

Sometimes, I think that Dogfish can get a little too crazy with putting many complex ingredients in one beer. I certainly admire their ambition and wish other breweries were this adventurous. However, I had never heard of, much less tried, several of the ingredients (wattleseed?) so I wasn't sure what to expect. At least with World Wide Stout, there's a good story behind all the crazy ingredients. Perhaps the beer would be better if they just had one unique ingredient that we could focus on. It's a good beer, but I feel like there are other dubbels that keep it simple and are just as good.

Appearance: Very dark brown, after the pour it looks black with a thin head

Smell: First whatever, second sniff yum....light chocolate with a yeast aroma.

Taste: Complex, I mean this beer has a lot of everything that should satisfy most "advocates". It is sweet, literally and ebonically, little sour but bitter and malty like a mutha.

Mouth: Medium to heavy feel, quenching feel. I put the glass down and still taste is there (un-real).

Overall: Excellent purchase that gave me a lot more from what I was expecting, excellent beer with a punch. I hope you all enjoy as much as I did. Salud!

An unusual array of spices. I am only familiar with honey and wattle seeds in beer. This beer works though. Like many Dogfish Head beers, the style is just a jumping off point for whatever wizardry is going to take place. In this case, the fairly pedestrian dubbel is the very loose basis for the beer.

Pours a fairly dense dark brown color. Lots of red light comes through my Chimay goblet. Looking at the beer from the top, you can see through the top side of the glass. Head fades fact...no lacing so to speak. Looks like a Belgian.

Aroma and flavor are not that Dubbel like. Kind of like a mixture of a Porter (Chocolate and coffee) and a Belgian Strong Dark Ale (Christmas type with lots of spices.) Tastes good....lighter that a Holidy Belgian Strong Dark...easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is light yet rich. A little alcohol bite but mostly a spicy slow sipping beer.

An unusual offering from Dogfish Head, but a tasty slow sipper.

Pours a clear copper cola color with a solid one inch khaki head that lingers. Lacing is spotty and doesn't last.

Coffee, roast malt, and chocolate dominate the aroma. There's a touch of belgian yeast character at the end that is more prominent as out warms. Lightly burnt sugar is evident.

Belgian yeast and cherry esters surface in the flavor initially, with wattle seeds complementing the lightly roasted malt character, adding complexity and a bit of nuttiness. There's a tart cherry note that is almost puckering, but it is outlasted by the slightly chocolatey roast malt flavor. There's a bit of earthy spice flavor at the finish, likely attributable to amaranth and the rest of the spice additions.

Body is moderate, with fairly high carbonation, slightly oily, with a touch of dryness at the finish, and substantial alcohol warmth.

Overall, a fairly flavorful big bottle offering from dogfish. I've been less than impressed with most of the new ones lately, but this doesn't disappoint.

Wedding week: New tick #2.

This beer pours a light bodied dark, dark chestnut brown in color with a very smooth and creamy, beige colored head. The nose is interesting. I'm not familiar with the ingredients listed on the bottle but they provide a subtle earthiness. There is also a German side. I swear this smells like a Munich Dunkel Lager, yet lacks some of the trademark Munich malt character. There is also a touch of cocoa. The flavors follow suit yet feature a little more dark malt and cocoa with very subtle honey. It's nice, seeing it more in the lager category. It drinks light and leaves a touch of cocoa behind in the aftertaste. Overall this is a decent beer but I don't know if the price is justified. I liked it. The light body make this one a quick drinker despite the 8.0%.

Wattle seed, amaranth, myrica gale... ooh my! With Urkontinent, Dogfish Head shows that the mere inclusion of the kitchen sink isn't nearly enough. I've come to verb-ify what the brewery does to their beers by saying, "They dogfished it up pretty good."

The beer settles into the snifter with a much darker than usual color than is displayed by the typical dubbel. The porterish hue shows terrific clarity through an onyx-like sheen. The beer releases a dainty white head with much creaminess and density. It's nearly espresso-like creme with a thin spider pattern until a swirl of the glass regenerates the kept blanked of foam.

Dubbel aromas rise to the nose with a rich nutty scent with earthy sweet notes like buckwheat, latte, cocoa, burnt toffee, damp soil, and sorghum. The light coffee scent rises from slight roast that pushes the beer through thresholds of brown ale, porter, and even stout as the beer warms. Decorated with esters of cherry, dried orange, and honey suckle, the honeyed nose is met with these complexities and balanced with a thin veil of peppercorn and wood bark.

Flavors do similarly, but with much more heft and sweetness than expected. Earthen honey carries a pungently sweet taste with a heightened walnut, sod, molasses, bittersweet chocolate, and buckwheat character. Fruit flavor of cherrie, date, fig, raisin, orange and plumb all make their way through the estery profile that gives rise to the savory malt sweetness. Spiced with fresh cracked peppercorn, corriander, and spicy wood bitterness seems somewhat of cedar, the beer balances with as much spice as it does broad earthy hop bitterness.

White weighted to the mouth, the beer's density of malt and honey delivers more fullness with its creamy carbonation. Instead of lifting the sweetness from the tongue as Belgian-brewed dubbel ales do, this one clings to the surfaces of the mouth with the succulent texture of molasses. Working toward a semi-sweet finish and moderate alcohol warmth, the beer finishes long and savory and should complement any meal with dessert-like fashion.

It's certainly not a crisp, refreshing, or clean ale as it celebrates what's best about the world's most exotic herbs and spices. The dubbel base seems a terrific choice for such display. However if the label didn't say so, I would have easily dismissed these flavors as fermentation byproduct of esters and spice, with exception for the honey that somehow stays with the beer until the finish.

Urkontinent pours a darker, mahogany brown color. It’s not opaque. When held to light, some burgundy and crimson highlights are noted. A tan head covers the top. It’s rather modest, standing only a finger or so tall. Retention was pretty good. It held for quite a while. Lacing was a little sticky and moderate in volume.

The nose is good. It definitely has a nice malty scent up front. Chocolate and light, sweet caramel are noted. I’m picking up a bit of honey and coffee next. It smells a little earthy and floral throughout. Secondary scents include a bit of praline, cherry, and yeasty esters. It seems somewhat complex, but the scents certainly seem to work well together. Alcohol is a little noticeable, but doesn’t come through all that strong. Smells good.

The flavor is impressive. The malt base primarily features chocolate malts. They tasty a little sweet and cocoa-ish. There’s a bit of a sweet caramel flavor to it. That could be a product of the honey, which is easily noted. Coffee is somewhat pronounced, but works really well. I’m a big coffee fan, so I like that. Belgian yeast is definitely in the mix. It definitely adds some fruity and spicy qualities to the flavor. There are notes of praline and cherry rounding it out. Alcohol doesn’t have all that much of a presence. It’s blended very well. Finishes sweet and malty with a twist of coffee.

Urkontinent has a lighter body than I anticipated. It’s on the light side of medium. Feels thin. Carbonation is light. It needs more body though. No question about that. Still goes down pretty easy.

Urkontinent is good beer. Given my unfamiliarity with the various ingredients, I was apprehensive. It’s one of those trailblazing beers with strange ingredients that just happens to work really well. I like it quite a bit. It’s an unusual Dubbel. I wouldn’t really compare or judge it that way. That wasn’t its intended purpose. Just take for what it is…an experiment. Kick back and enjoy it!

Served in a Dogfish head signature glass. Picked up at Village Pump in College Park for 8ish dollars. Beer is brown and hazy with a nice thin off white head of small bubbles, minimal lacing, decent retention, low but steady carbonation.

Aroma is a little like a health food store, smells like crushed seeds and grain, some yeastiness and sweetness.

Beer is medium in body, mildly sweet, a little dry on the finish, mild bitterness from roasted grains and other things, it is a little oily but it is fine. The yeast cuts through in the midpalate, it is decent but not great. Interesting and probably worth a look but I won't be repeating this particular beer.

Served from tap into a chalice. Poured a massively dark brown with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, dark fruit, and wood. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, banana, fruit, and wood. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. I really like the idea behind this brew and why they decided to do it, but I really wasn’t overly impressed here. While it wasn’t impressive it still wasn’t that bad for the most part. It was fairly well balanced in both the aroma and flavor but completely failed to standout from other brews of the style.

This poured out as a nice looking brown color. The head was a tan color and left a light lacing. The smell of the beer has a sweet slightly fruity aroma along with some toasted earthy notes. The taste of the beer has a nice sweetness as well as a distant tartness in the finish. Not typically what a traditional Dubbel tastes like from what I've had in the past. The mouthfeel has a bit more of an aggressive carbonation than some of the traditional Dubbels out there as well. Overall this beer is quite good, I just wouldn't have guessed that this was a Dubbel.

Pours dark black with a dense ivory head that settles to a slight ring and puffy haze. Nice chocolate aromas emanating from this one, along with some black cherry and a floral component. Taste is similarly chocolatey, with more cherry, a bit of chicory and coffee, and some bitter herbs. I don't think I could pick out "amaranth" and "gale", but there's definitely some interesting herbs at play here. Touch of dark honey in mix as well. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, with a medium-full body, good carbonation, and a pleasantly dry finish. Overall another fun experiment from the madmen at Dogfish Head, but not something I'd go crazy to try again.

A - dark amber with a thick, brown head that has great retention

S - caramel, faint coffee

T - heavy caramel, faint coffee, mild bitter finish, faint chocolate

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a very smooth, balanced, rich Dubbel. I had never heard of any of these ingredients before this beer, but after reading the description and giving this beer a try, I can see how all the flavors blend nicely with the Dubbel style. This is definitely a beer worth trying. It was very enjoyable.
