Notes:
Death Metal is a big ol' Imperial Stout with loads of Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops, a wide array of roasty toasty malts, heaps of cold steeped coffee, and a whole mess of vanilla beans. The beer's in-your-face punch earned it the name Death Metal and it lives up to the name with each of the flavorful ingredients head banging into your palate in succession.

Growler shared by Bobby. Thanks!
A: The beer pours very dark brown, almost black, with a small off-white head.
S: The coffee aroma really comes through. There's a bit of coffee grounds and a very mild acidity. Perhaps a hint of soy sauce with an almost spicy/cinnamon aroma. The vanilla is there a bit in the background.
T: An almost espresso-like coffee flavor. Sort of bitter from all the roast with the same sort of spicy note. Plenty of dark chocolate dark chocolate along with vanilla and an earthy flavor and bitterness.
M: The body is medium with medium carbonation.
O: Other than the soy sauce on the nose, this was a pretty good beer. Nice coffee and vanilla character.

Review from notes.
A: Served in a goblet, Death Metal was a very dark brown with some purplish hints to it. There is a one finger tan head on top, not much retention, and spotty lacing.
S: A lot of coffee on the aroma up front. There is some nice citrus hops in the middle which then leads to some coffee grounds and a bit of chocolate.
T: It has a full coffee flavor form start to finish with some faint chocolate mixed in. There is some pine and citrus in the middle and to a lesser extent on the finish. It is extremely roasty.
M: Medium to heavy bodied with some lively carbonation.
O: A little harsh for my palate. I found the coffee/roast to be a bit overwhelming, but I did like how hop forward it was.

Darkest of brown, almost black in color.
Half a finger of tan head with some decent lacing.
Aroma is hops up front, with a nice chocolate/coffee balance with a lingering nose.
Taste is definitely leaning more towards an Imperial Black IPA with fresh coffee. Alcohol is well masked, as I find with many of DFH's offerings.
Quite bitter, most likely due the abundance of hops, but it works well with the coffee.
Overall, I like this brew. I have had the pleasure of trying Tom B's original Death Metal recipe and definitely prefer it's incredible balance and velvety smooth mouthfeel more than this amped up version produced at the brewpub.
Still, a very tasty beer and glad I made the trip to enjoy a good friend's (well deserved) award winning recipe....even if not exactly the same.

This is a harsh brew, holy crap was is awesome to try though! This poured out as a deep brownish black color. The head was very thin but had a little lacing on the glass. The smell of this beer is jam packed with coffee and hops. The taste is explosive with citrusy hops and loads of coffee. The Mouthfeel of the beer wasn't as thick as I was expecting it to be. Personally I feel this beer is more like an Imperial Black IPA than a Stout. Either way, I made the trip 3.5 hours to try it and I feel satisfied. Glad I tried it for sure.

Reviewed from notes:
Appearance: dark brown black with 1 finger tan head
Smell: roast, barley, malts, coffee,
Taste: roast, coffee, nice flavor upfront fades to a very bitter beer at the finish
Mouthfeel: mild carbonation, medium to full body
Overall: a nice stout. Glad I got to try it.
