Fruit / Vegetable Beer |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (206), on-tap (27), nitro-bottle (1)

Notes:
For our first new 12-ounce 4-packs in nearly half a decade, we replaced the classic barley foundation of beer with a mild sorghum base. The hints of molasses and pit-fruit are balanced by vibrant strawberry notes and a unique complexity that comes with the addition of a malty buckwheat honey.

We believe health-conscious beer drinkers and the millions of Americans who suffer from Celiac disease can cut back on gluten while relishing the distinction and drinkability of this very special brew.

I had this on tap over the weekend at the brew pub in Rehobeth. It was fresh, clear and had a fantastic taste. The color was good and the smell showed the fruit added to the batch. I'd recommend it as a great medium bodied beer for the summer. It wasn't too heavy

A: poured a soft fuzzy gold with a thin head which has a soft pinkish glow.

S: Aroma is of berries and sour fruits.

T: Taste goes from sweet strawberry to tart cherry with some other taste in the back.

M: Mouthfeel is a medium body light metallic buzz in the back like licking a 9 volt battery. Not a bad thing, very lightly carved.

O: Overall a decent beer and probably order again.

from notes.

Clear medium golden with a thin white head.

Quite sweet. Sweetened strawberry. The ingredients are pretty easy to distinguish. Sorghum blends into the honey and strawberry notes.

Medium body, prickly, bubbly carbonation.

A very unique beer, as mentioned above, very easily distinguished flavors. Enjoyable.

Served on tap at The Brass Rail in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a crystal clear golden orange in color with some ruby hints and light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall off-white head that quickly reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal to light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of sweet fruit, strawberry, honey, and some light herbal notes.

T: The beer has a slightly sweet malt body with some fruitiness to it. There are also light notes of honey and herbs. The strongest flavor is that of the strawberries which tastes natural. Overall, just slightly too sweet for my palate.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Easy to drink and enjoyable but a little too sweet for me. Probably one of the better glutton free options I have tried but it is not something that I look for when purchasing beers.

Served in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – The beer was served a lighter amber color with hints of orange and a just off white head. The head faded quite fast to give only a light amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was sweet and fruity. The fruity aromas were of strawberry but had very light citrus aromas as well. Mixed with the fruit was a lighter sugary aroma and some sorghum bready aromas as well.

Taste – The taste starts out quite sweet with strong notes of some more sorghum bread and lots of strawberry. As the taste advanced more the strawberry faded lightly in the middle but was made up with by some more cane sugar like tastes. The strawberry then comes back more with hints of other more sour fruit flavors which when mixed with the sorghum flavor leave a rather interesting somewhat sour flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body is on the average side with the carbonation level following suit. Fairly fitting for te fruit flavors and light sourness.

Overall – Really not a bad brew. Its fruit flavor is pretty good and hides some of the slightly off sorghum flavors. An interesting brew and actually one I would have on greater occasion.

A- Pours a fairly clear bright gold orange color with a pretty foamy white head. Head has pretty good retention and leaves a bit of lacing.

S- A lot of sweetness of the bat. Picking up honey, lemon and strawberries.

T- Tart strawberries make me about fall of the chair. Some grassiness, lemon, more tart and more strawberries.

M- Lighter side of medium in body and carbonation was ok.

O- Not liking this one at all. I'll pass on this one for sure.

This brew was served from the tap at The Owl House in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a Nugget Nectar pint glass. The brew was of a golden amber color, sporting a one finger tan head of creamy, cakey white bubbles. Retention was nice, leaving little spotted lacing about the glass. Haze was minimal, and carbonation appeared light. The nose opened with white wine grape, light tartness, and an even woodiness. Under ripe strawberry sweetness was almost immediately apparent. This was cut by a synthetic plastic, bittering up the edges of the sweetness. Our first impression was that this was not a typical tasting brew, and the malt bill seemed unusual, but this was to be expected considering that this was gluten free. As we sipped, vinegar bitterness and toasty pale malts opened the floor up. Grape juice sweetness, as in the nose, was as equally as robust, mixing with more chalky grain and the faintest citric hop on the far back. These flavors pulled us to the middle, where the grape inclusions were significantly enhanced. The malts softened up, with an apparent buttery quality. Yeast came through with a quick bitter bite right at the peak. The strawberries finally came through, at the very end, but these were cancelled out in the final moments by more vinegar sourness and fusel, winey booze. The aftertaste breathed of cheap champagne, light metallics, strawberries and raspberries, sour grain, and lactic acidity. The body was light, and the carbonation was high, with the bubbles tickling the tongue, again, like a sparkling wine or cider. The mouth is lightly coated and cooled, with brief woody astringency. This goes, and the palate is wet, with little following slurp or pop to each subsequent sip. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks as easily as any wine cooler.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the coloring. For a specialty beer, the color was a beautiful solid gold. As far as flavoring, we wish that the strawberries were better integrated, and hit the palate sooner than the finish. What was really overwhelming was all of the wine-like components, with grape flavoring dominating the fruit department. While this is not something we would routinely buy, we can see how it would be a great window into craft beer for all people seeking gluten free beer. A+ and props for the consideration and effort DFH!!

Served from tap into a sampler shaker. Poured golden yellow with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cherry, raspberry, strawberry, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, strawberry, cherry, sugar, and alcohol. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. Wow, I felt like I was drinking a high ABV wine cooler on this one with all of the fruitiness going on. Granted this was a little bit better than a wine cooler as it was more sweet obviously and didn’t taste like ass. I could definitely see this one being a good choice for that girl that you really like but she won’t put out unless she is drunk. Give her a few of these and she will be putty in your hands. You should at least try one though to say you did.

Went out to dinner tonight and Tweason was offered in addition to about 10 other drafts. Decided to try it because I've enjoyed other Dogfish beers, and this was the first time I had seen a gluten free beer was on tap.

color/appearancer: clear orange, some faint suds around the rim
taste: like a red bull that had gone bad. very sweet, medicine taste.
mouthfeel: thin, very low carbonation.
overall: After drinking less than half. I asked our waitress to bring me another of Dogfish's offerings. I requested that she keep the beer on our bill. This is the FIRST time I've not drunk a beer I've ordered even if it was not what I was expecting.

If you have Celiac disease, I recommend to skip this offering. I have not tried other gluten free beers. I will continue to jump at the chance to try Dogfish's beers.

This is my first gluten-free beer. As much as I rail against DFH getting the benefit of the doubt and reviewers starting their scores higher than with other breweries, I do try everything they put out there and it took DFH doing a gluten-free to get me to try one.

The only other strawberry beer I have to compare this to is Samuel Smith's and this compares favorably. The strawberry comes off as fresh and real, unlike SS's which seems artificial. This one has a nice tartness to counter the mile sweetness, creating a good balance.

The strawberries are a bit hidden by the oddness of the sorghum in the smell, but I don't mind since I like beers that taste better than they smell. I have to use "oddness" since I'm not that familiar with sorghum and now I know why it isn't popular...it has an odd smell to it.

It's a really refreshing beer, but the grains really leave a mark on the tongue at the end, but that's my biggest knock on this one...not a bad thing.

I had this beer poured on tap at Coles in Buffalo NY during a DFH tap takeover, poured into a pint glass.

A: Golden Straw/Mild Amber Hue, Passes Lots of Light, Mild White Head, No Lacing

S: Musty Black Grape, Strawberry, Wheat

T: Light Black Grape, Strawberry, Mild Sour Mash

M: Average Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Lightly Sweet, Lightly Sour

Overall, for a gluten free beer, it is decent. It has kind of an odd mix of flavors and seemed to be very light.

On-tap 2/17/2012 at British Beer Company, in Walpole, MA served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a short white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strawberries, light caramelized malts, some spice and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with a strong but not very sweet strawberry flavor followed by very mild flavors of caramel and spices. The hops presence is decent for the style and the malt character is hearty but not too heavy, however there isn’t much balance. The after-taste is slightly tart.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very dry.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, decent kick, decent representation of style, for a gluten-free beer it isn’t too bad.

On tap at Pizza Paradiso. Served in a willi becher glass.

Pours a fairly-clear golden color with a short white head and a touch of lacing. The nose carries some strawberry and a bit of an odd character that I can't quite place. Nonetheless, not terribly enjoyable. The flavor follows down the same path. There's some spice and fruit and nothing really comes together. Light body. Not a big fan.

Pours a clear, bright yellow orange color with about two fingers of fluffy white head that remains throughout most of the beer.

The scent is very sweet, mostly of berries and a little note of alcohol.

The taste is also quite sweet, there is a good presence of strawberries and teaberry, also a bit of a buttery presence. The taste of alcohol becomes more dominant as the beer goes on, maybe too much so for my taste.

Light bodied, very crisp, high carbonation.

I didn't really enjoy this beer too much. The alcohol presence became too overwhelming to taste anything else, it sort of became ethyl alcohol and soda water.

Pours a light clear golden color with a small fizzy head. In the aroma, fresh strawberries and a mint like herbal note. The taste is similar, tasty strawberries, gummy sorghum, a touch of herb, spice, bitters, and finishes sweet. Not too beery, but a little alcohol. Comes off a bit winecooler-esque, but a good one. Refreshing flavor. Light bodied, fizzy feel. Overall, this is a great option for those with gluten allergies. Tastes like a more commercial flavored malt beverage, sans malt.

Made the trek to Churchkey specifically for this one. It was a DFH tap take –over. This was the first gluten free beer I’d ever tried and I was really surprised.

A – Poured a burnt orange with a ½ finger white head which dissipated almost instantly. No real lacing present.

S – Very light strawberry smell and that was it.

T – Had some funkiness to it which I didn’t expect. Got some honey and strawberry too.

M – All the flavors did play nicely with each other. It’s a nice medium bodied beer, a little light on the carbonation.

O – I was unsure what to expect but I really liked this and would drink it again. It be interesting to try from the bottle to see if there are any differences.

Had on-tap at the DFH brewpub in DE. Poured a hazy golden orange color with a moderate white head that mostly receded leaving spotty lacing. Had an aroma of strawberries, citrus and light floral notes. Tasted a little bit earthy and floral, though most of the flavor was strawberries and citrus. Very sessionable.

Body was on the light side of medium with fairly high carbonation. Very refreshing beer that I think I would enjoy more on a Summer day than in Winter.

First had: on tap at Dogfish Head, Rehoboth Beach, DE

Poured clear, golden, with a fuzzy white head that receded to a thin layer of bubbles. Sweet aroma, flowery, with obvious hints of strawberry candy...those little candies that have wrappers that look like strawberries. Very pleasant taste, with sweet strawberry candy very obvious, pale malts, bubblegum, wet grass and wildflowers. Obviously, this is not a beer for everyone, but for what it's worth, I found it to be very nice. Light body, and very easily drinkable.

On-tap at the DFH Brewpub as part of a flight.

Poured a light amber with a slight pink hue and a thin white ring of head that disappears quickly, leaving just a slight stream of bubbles. Aromas is certainly sweet, with a good amount of strawberry, a touch of honey, and an "off" grainy character that must be from the sorghum. Taste is spot-on with the nose, very sweet, with lots of strawberry, honey, and an almost apple-cider quality. I don't think I'd immediately guess "gluten free", but you can definitely tell there's something different about the makeup of this one. Mouthfeel is smooth and nicely drinkable with just a touch of bitterness in the finish. Pretty refreshing, actually. Overall a very unique beer, and a neat experiment, but not really my thing.

On-tap at the DFH Pub. Apparently it's gluten-free... doesn't make a difference to me but seems to be a selling point to some people. Nice fruity aroma, sort of reminds me of a a flavored wheat ale. Strawberries aren't too strong and is definitely on the lighter side, maybe something more geared towards the female demographic. Finish is a bit tart, it could be hard to have more than one, but easy to drink and tasty, just don't expect anything too crazy.

Even for a gluten free beer it is pretty far out there ... Strawberries and honey bring a ton of complexity to the palate. Good palate cleanser beer.

This beer poured out as an interesting orange color with no head by the time it got to my table... No lacing here wither. The smell of the beer has some sweet sugary aromas and some hints of fruit also. The taste of the beer is a little tart and sweet in the beginning, as the flavors settle there is a faint bubblegum flavor in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel has a sharp little bite to it but finishes clean and a bit on the dry side. Overall not too bad, wouldn't need to have it again. Happy to have tried it though.

Poured on-tap and served in a pint glass, the beer is a cloudy, opaque, peach color with no head. The aroma is overly sweet, with hints of pastry and strawberry characteristics. There is a steady carbonation bubbling, keeping the beer light and crisp while you drink. Highlights of strawberry tartness with a steady citrus and tar backbone, as well. The aftertaste is sweet fruit, both strawberry and citrus again. Very light body and extremely sharp finish, making it a difficult one to drink a lot of. Good blend of flavors, and very refreshing, but overly sweet and crisp for my palate.
