Notes:
Black & Red is a velvety smooth, dry-minted stout with a serious fruit problem! The huge portion of heavily roasted grains brings a dry, chocolatey character that contrasts Black & Red's sweet, fruity, full body.
As you tilt your glass, you'll notice that the black color you are perceiving is actually a very deep red and that the rich creamy foam has a tinge of pink to it. Black & Red starts off roasted and warming with a robust mintiness from 100 pounds of organic mint (from our friends at Washington's Green Grocer) added to the secondary fermentation and finishes out sweet and smooth.

On tap in a tulip at Bodega on 9/27/11
Very dark brown; sets up black in the glass. Poured a thin layer of foam that disappears. Only a tight ring of retention remains, aside from a lone, pea-sized bit of foam drifting all lonely like. It has a bubble on it; looks like an eye. Two spots of lace.
Anyway...
My nostrils are bitch-slapped by aromas of peppermint Altoids and menthol. A booze note is coupled with the mint for a nasty, nail polish remover harshness. Faux raspberry chocolate candies. Hints of burnt molasses and plastic. Absolutely putrid; I haven't come across that smells this bad in quite a spell.
This nonsense of a beer tastes exactly like it smells and is every bit as repulsive. Brash mint, fake raspberry and a wimpy chocolate notion so lacking in roast it's a joke. It isn't hot from alcohol, but it has that nail polish remover solvency going on. Starts to taste cloyingly sweet as it warms up.
Full, overly slick feel. The mint makes the appreciable feel worse, kind of like the wind chill factor. Effervescent carbonation drives the nail in the coffin.
Such a wretched beer. It's astonishing DFH has reached a new low. This is like a malevolent blend of 120 Minute, World Wide Stout, Fort and Altoids.

On tap at Bodega, thankfully I did not pay for this beer.
Appearance
Its not bad lookin', really. It looks like its going to be quite a big stout. There isn't much head, and the beer is soupy, black and oily looking.
Aroma
I literally had to psych myself into taking a sip after having a whiff of this stuff. I guess I was trying to act tough in front of my girlfriend. It smells just like Listerine so my brain was telling me that I shouldn't drink it. The aroma is so loaded with alcohol and mint I thought I was being poisoned. There is almost no raspberry in the aroma, the mint and antiseptic alcohol ruin everything else.
Taste
Fighting the urge to swish, spit and say "aaahhh", I choked back a few ounces of this stuff. The shudders this beer gave me only subsided once the raspberry and chocolate peeked out in the aftertaste. The front of the beer tastes like some sort of industrial kitchen cleaner, or something you use to heal canker sores (although I'm pretty sure this beer gave me canker sores on my soul). The much delayed aftertaste is actually halfway enjoyable, if not only serving as mercy to the mouthwashy mint onslaught. There is a recognizable flavor of chocolate-raspberries at the finish that I was able to taste through the laughter and gagging.
Mouthfeel
Have you ever eaten or drank something that was flavored just like something very familiar, but the texture was all wrong? Those food flavored jelly beans or flavored vodkas are good examples. The mismatching of flavor and taste is usually very startling. This beer has the same effect as those damn popcorn flavored Jelly Bellys. It tastes and smells so much like a mouthwash that your brain is alarmed to find out that this substance is actually thick, sludgy, oily and carbonated. The alcohol burn is just as strong as a mouthwash, but somehow I don't think I'm protected from gingivitis after trying this beer.
Overall
This is either one of the chemicals used in lethal injection or something a hyperactive group of grade schoolers concocted after being let loose in the kitchen. And I drank this stuff without even being double-dog dared.

I realize going in that I'm in opposition to the average review, and I'll also give that it may be me...but...if you value your taste buds, avoid this like the plague. This $7 "pint" just became my most expensive drain pour. I hate wasting beer, good or otherwise, and DFH has given me plenty of pleasant surprises with brews that are off-the wall, but, and I'm sorry Sam, this is a colossal, monumental "FAIL".
A - dark opaque black/brown (dim light) w/ a creamy dark brown head. At first I thought it was on nitro, but the tap wasn't right. At this point I'm looking forward to the beer.
S - this is where things started going off the track, very medicinal smelling. It reminded me of old school cough medicine...you know...the kind without the sweet, fruity flavor added to mask the nastiness.
T - OMG!...WTF!!! super sweet, followed by a nasty licorice medicine flavor. I can not identify the flavors, but an hour later I can't get the taste out of my mouth, and it's not something I'm enjoying. I managed to force down about half of my "pint, and gave up. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING would entice me to try this again.
D - NEVER AGAIN, even in my next life.
M - appearances are deceiving, but I guess i was expecting something thick and chewy to go along with the creamy appearance of the pour...wrong, thin and watery.
O - What can I say that I haven't already? This brew has set a new standard for me. I have the ultimate beer to compare too. I can not imagine a (craft) beer that I would rate worse than is. Is there a rating lower than an "F"?

Served on tap at the Rehoboth Beach pub, sampler size glass at the recommendation of mdaschaf, THECPJ and the waitress. Ut oh, this must not be that good, I'm adventurous and still wanted to sample this one.
A: Black, pitch dark body with essentially a non-existent head, naturally due to being a smaller serving. A bit of off-white foam circled the glass but nothing impressive.
S: A strange and eclectic blend of fruit and fresh mint. Fruity puree and peppermint are immediately evident. What this beer fails to present is any qualities of an American Stout. The malt base here is extremely weak for the style and really doesn't help tie any of these loose ends together.
T: I'll describe the flavors but this is honestly terrible. Infected, lactic and sour berries (raspberries?) blended with a milky, minty flavor that turns into the most unappealing flavor I've sampled in a beer to my recollection. This is horrible - an experiment or cover-up gone terribly wrong.
M: Surprisingly has a relatively full body on it, but to call it full-bodied would be misleading. Slight carbonation to it but still creamy.
I really have no clue what Dogfish Head is trying to pull here. This is the worst beer I've ever sampled from them. As someone else put it, it tastes like infected Fort drenched with mint to cover up how horrible it is. In reality, they seem to have created a beast no one should ever try to conquer. Holy shit, this was gross. End of story.

Note's from Captain Lawrence Rosso Batch 3 release / tasting:
DFH (black and red) – a is dark, looks like a nice stout. smells like mouthwash or scope or something, I don’t know, this is weird…not really beer like and not really appealing smelling. mint and beer is a mix that probably shouldn’t have been experimented with. UGH…tastes just like it smells…AWFUL. mouth is thick and it is just gros. I had an ounce or two pour from a growler and it was too much. I almost ralphed after tasting it. Certainly along the lines of what DFH does as far as being different and out there and taking chances, but again, I don’t think that this is a combination that needed to be explored. ICK!

Thanks for sharing this one, Bobby.
A: The beer pours black in color with almost no head whatsoever and very minimal carbonation.
S: A very strange aroma to this. The mint aroma is very, very intense. It's almost like a peppermint patty. There's a bit of raspberry and dark chocolate as well as a lot of roast, licorice, and booze.
T: Mildly herbal with some booze, sugar, and licorice. The typical rubber cement flavor that you get with high ABV Dogfish head beers. Plenty of that mint with a bit of chocolate to it and a slight sourness of raspberries.
M: Medium bodied with low carbonation.
O: Not a very good idea and not very well executed.

Among a sour tasting, a friendly BA dropped this off where we were standing and said to have at it.
Poured a nice dark black with a red tinge at the edges and slightly red bubbles.
Smell of overpowering mint, dark chocolate, roasty malts and a sweet presence of residual sugars.
Taste was overpoweringly mint. I tasted scope, booze and entirely too much mint. I recently read somewhere that 100 pounds of mint was used in this and I would have to say that was entirely too much. Mint is something that easily overpowers its way into just about every food. Imperial Stouts are no exception. Too much mint, unless you like to eat raw mint by the handful.
No thanks

On tap at Mac's Southend in Charlotte, NC
All I can say is when I smelled it, I wanted ice cream. Very minty, but not my ideal beer smell. One taste is all I could take because I don't want mint in my beer. Just not my thing, I guess. At the next table, the guy couldn't get enough of it.
Appearance was about average. Not much of a head.
Smell was overpowering mint.
Taste was just a minty mess.
Mouthfeel was decent
I shoulda poured it into the other dude's glass.

Had this on tap at the DFH Brewpub in Rehoboth
A: Served in a goblet, the beer is black in color with a tight, brown/gray head. Nice retention and left wisps of lacing, but nothing substantial.
S: Lots of mint, some chocolate and roasted malt. The raspberries come through more as the beer warms.
T: Tons of mint with some fruit mixed in. The best I can do to describe the taste is to compare it to the cough syrup you give to kids...the kind that I always dreaded drinking.
M: Medium bodied with a pretty good creaminess. There is a slight minty tingle.
O: I had high hopes, but the first time I got it, I took a sip and my immediate reaction was, I can't believe I have an entire glass. Normally I like most DFH beers, but this one was a complete miss for me.

I had this on-tap at Capone's during the black friday event. Served in a goblet.
Appearance: Pours very dark color, almost black with some red at the edges. There is a half finger of an head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.
Smell: Lots of mint up front with some roast. Quite fruity. A bit like cough syrup.
Taste: Minty robatussin. Dark fruit with lots of mint. Not everything works together for me.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: I didn't like this very much. Overwhelming . The mint, roast, and fruit were weird together.

According to the menu this is "A big dry minted stout with a fruit problem." I respectfully submit that the fruit wasn't the problem.
a: It looked like a stout, black bodied with a small, dark tan colored head.
s: It smelled like... Well I'm not exactly sure how to describe it. There were subtle signs of stout to be found, a rich, roasty chocolate. There was also a huge amount of boozy mint and a some fruit in the form of cough syrup; cherries or raspberries perhaps. This didn't smell all that bad, but it didn't make me eager to try a a sip either.
t: The first thing I tasted was an overwhelming flavor that I can only describe as mentholated licorice. This never even came close to going away even as it was joined by hints of syrupy raspberries. It might have been wishful thinking on my part, but I think I did taste some sweet chocolate. This was very strange overall and not at all beer-y.
m: Kind of big bodied, yet watery at the same time.
o: Well this this certainly isn't a fuck no and it falls just a bit short of a hell no. It most definitely is a no for me though.

A: As dark as you would expect a stout to be; Small head dissipates quickly
S: Bizarre smell, almost a hybrid of cough syrup and Cheerwine (a cherry soda from North Carolina)
T: Too complex for its own good; It is a ridiculous blend of fruits and mint with a subtle hint of traditional American-style stout underneath
M: Only good thing about this brew; creamy, full-bodied
Overall, this was the worst beer I've ever had from Dogfish Head. It is thoroughly over-engineered and seems to be an example of Dogfish Head letting their off-the-wall style of brewing run wild, with bad results. The smell and taste is at best reminiscent of fruity soft drinks, and at worst, cough medicine. How this is supposed to be a stout, I have no idea. Someone should tell them that just because they CAN use 100 different ingredients in a beer doesn't mean they SHOULD. Keep it simpler next time, boys.

Dogfish Head Black & Red
Pours a dark brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma of cherry, roast and herbs. In the taste, fruity mint with a roasted back end. Fruity, drying, minty, with a lingering spearmint note. Boozy as well, and sticky full bodied feel with mint flavor that does not want to let go. An inexplicably odd mix of flavors, but with this brewery, that is to be expected. When Sam and the boys hit it, they hit it out of the park. When they miss, you get something like this.

On draft at Dogfish Head Brewings and Eats on my mini-trip in April.
I didn't know much about the beer going in, but seeing as you don't see Imperial Stouts coming out of DFH that often I was excited. The description mentioned mint with a fruity profile, but not that there was fruit in the beer.
Only the day after I ordered this did I discover from a local that this was the bastard child of a failed batch of Fort. Suddenly it started making sense.
The beer is a dark rum color, which collects black in the bowl of the glass. The head is an off white/tan color.
Aromas of mint chocolate are overflowing. It's insane how sweet and minty this beer is. It's like one of those gross mint chocolate candy canes that no one wants around Christmas time.
Mint is huge in the flavor as well. Sweet chocolate with cherry undertones tries to break through all of the mint. I have only had this and maybe one other beer with mint in it, but frankly, mint just seems to have no place in beer. It's way too prominent a flavor and difficult to control it would seem. Peppermint, peppermint, peppermint. Extremely sweet over time.
Stout or not, aside from the color I am not so sure. I guess you can attribute the chocolate flavor to the style, but otherwise there are no real malt flavors. The sweet mint and fruitiness overpowers everything else.
The carbonation is lively. Black and Red is quite thin bodied for a stout base beer. Ohh wait, the base beer is a fruit beer. Sticky, but dry feel long after each sip. A boozy sipper at that. No surprises here.
Overall this was just strange. I love experimental beer, but this was outside of my comfort zone. It serves as an interesting desert beer I suppose. And maybe I'd have rated it more kindly had the true components of this beer been divulged by the brewery.
Also, I am convinced that this beer was the cause of my wicked hangover the next morning.

A-Pours black, black, black. Tannish head is about a finger high. Hangs around for a while. Leaves lace rings.
S-Smells like peppermint. Boozy. Artificial berries. The nose is making me nervous. Smells hot, cloying, and artificial. Well, let's see...
T-Yuck. Huge peppermint. Mint leaves are followed by chocolate and a sickening fake berry flavor. Tastes like someone melted mint gum, berry Jolly Ranchers, and mixed it with cough syrup. Had trouble choking this one down. Boozy.
M-Thick. Dry. Syrup. Cough syrupy to be more exact. Mild carbonation.
O/D-These DFH beers always make me nervous. I really, really did not enjoy this. I cannot stand those super-sugary artificial fruit flavors, especially in such a thick bodied stout. Not my thang...sorry bro.

What can I say about this beer that is nice? I guess that the alcohol is well masked, I suppose.
Beer is black with a thin tan head of small bubbles, low carbonation, some lacing, looks fine.
holy hell, what is this? Smells like a stout mixed with mouthwash.
Tastes like that too, beer is surprisingly light, very sweet up front, the mid and the finish (which is dry) is filled with mint mint and more mint. Maybe my palate is weak and bored but all I get from this is mint and more mint. Not a repeat. I would have a hard time drinking a bottle of this. Kind of tastes like burning.

On tap at the alehouse in Falls Church and served in a snifter.
A: Black as night, with a head that was MAYBE a shade or two lighter than the liquid below it.
S: This was quite an air freshener! Tons of fresh mint and raspberries. No soy sauce, chocolate, coffee, or any other common "Imperial Stout" characteristics.
T: The taste, unfortunately, was a little more suspect. The artificial raspberry was very reminiscent of an old fashioned fountain drink syrup, and gave this a cough syrup taste overall. The mint mixed with the Imperial Stout ingredients made this taste like a mint licorice... which I didn't care for.
M: Extremely sweet, anemically carbonated, and not very drinkable. While the lacing was very slight, the sugar lingering on the palate crossed into the realm of the ridiculous.
O: Interesting in theory, but for me, this was almost a drain pour. I think it would have been a MUCH better beer if they had given this more of a dark chocolate taste (cocoa nibs?), and omitted the mint completely. DFH missed the mark here... BIG TIME!

On tap at the Hulmeville Inn for the "360 minutes" of Dogfish Head event.
pours a thick black color with little to no head. smell is very forward and of pinot noir and mint leaves. In taste i get a lot of the same, very pinot noir like with a kick of chocolate mint through out. I'm really not a big fan of this flavor combo but I'm trying to be fair. the mouth feel to it which I'm not a fan of seems to be almost oily. This isn't something i'd order again but always nice to try some of DFH's stranger concoctions.

Had this at the Royal Hilltop. Wasn't paying much attention to the name and was thinking Black and Blue was on the way...so this was quite the surprise!
Deep black at first glance turns into a really, really deep red when viewed through the light. Even though this was a brand new keg, carbonation was almost non-existent.
The nose is minty with a sweet and sour note following only to be eclipsed again by mint. This confounded me a bit, but wasn't bad.
The flavor follows a similar path, although the mint doesn't really kick in right away. Things start off with a sweet raspberry note, followed by a wave of menthol that leaves a only trace of stout character. I ended up looking this up and discovering what had arrived at this point. Apparently it's a massive fruit stout that has been "dry minted" with a 100lbs. of mint leaves! Not sure if a whole lot of hops make it into this beer, and it really doesn't taste like much anything else I've ever had. Herbal and a bit medicinal, without many flavors traditional to beer. Some of the sourness and the mint leads this down the path of a weird gruit. It's almost as though someone started mixing different cough medicines together.
Slick and syrupy, it's tough to drink a lot of this. At first it's novel and funny, but that wears off after a few sips. I'd hate to think about drinking a bomber of this, even when splitting it.
A novel idea, but the fruit, stout, and mint don't blend at all. Instead there are 3 flavors clashing with one another over and over.
Lots of respect to the DFH guys for trying something new with the mint, but I think the other elements are what kills this for me. Maybe a pale ale or normal/milder stout would've been a better idea?
As it stands, it's fun as a sample but I can't see myself ordering this again.

A - Black pour with fantastic carbonation for a growler that has been sitting for a while.
S - Medicinal flavors of mint and fruit. A more earthy, herbal mint follows quickly, along with a good dose of chocolate, reminding me of brownies with mint ice cream. The medicinal aspects of the nose win out in the end, leaving me with the impression of mouth wash.
T - An ultra sweet chocolate with light-roast stout character is initially present, but this is quickly overwhelmed by the mint of the brew. Again, some nondescript fruitiness plays with the sweetness overall, but the finish is so much like Scope that any other flavor is quickly a faint memory.
M - Medium bodied.
O - It's always interesting to taste a DFH flight of fancy, and I'm happy to have tried this, but this ale was a bit too "off-centered" for me.

Just came across my notes from the Oregon Brewers Festival:
Pours murky dark brown/red with faint off white head fading quickly to a decent lace.
Nose is in your face mint, berry, and chocolate. Very dark, complex and inviting. Some hints of roasted coffee, spearmint, peppermint, raspberry...
Really odd palate. Not cohesive. It's chocolate covered raspberry meets toothpaste. Really odd. Not pleasant.
Texture is more viscous and soupy than I would have expected. Not very balanced, cumbersome. Finish is pretty long, but it prolongs the toothpaste feel...
This seriously tastes like I just brushed my teeth and ate a chocolate covered raspberry. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I will likely never purchase or go out of my way to try again.

L: Black, but a touch thin for a stout, head is similar ... right color, too thin.
S: Creme de Menthe with a hint at berries. Mint is super overpowering here.
T: Tastes like a hand-grenade. Super creme de menthe booze on a stick up front, fades through some fruitier notes and into a decent finish. Meh. Blackberries finally come out from behind the creme de menthe curtain about 2 minutes after a taste ... good lord.
F: Light, too light ... a touch over-carbonated.
D: OK, which for a beer this big and offensively minty is ... a compliment ... it's at least an achievement to be sort of average for how flavorful this is.

On tap at TJ's in Paoli, PA. Served in a small snifter glass by my excellent bartender Kevin. Looks like black coffee with a cinnamon colored head. Smell is mostly mint, spearmint, hint of chocolate and razberry. Taste is very dominated by the mint and spearmint flavors. Slight hint of chocolate and razberry on the back end. Thinner mouthfeel than I expected. Overall this was an interesting beer that I was glad I got to try. Apparently there are only a few kegs in existence. It was a bit too sweet for me. You have to be a big mint fan to enjoy this beer. I could probably do one snifter with a desert but not much more after that. Worth a try if you see it.
