Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (445), on-tap (69), growler (3), nitro-bottle (1)

Notes:
Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse and 10% ABV. It's dry-hopped with 100% Centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. Can you tell we're stoked for this mighty musical centennial?

To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the Centennial hops (and as a shoutout to Robert Johnson's mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson), we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter.

IIPA is my most fave style so I will try not to be too prejudice.

Poured a light caramel with a nice frothy head.

DAMN! Love the smell of a IIPA!! Grapefruity love.

Taste is head on hops with the deep lemony grapefruit piney flavour yet a sweeter finish.

Mouthfeel is excellent.

Overall will definitely head back to pick up another bottle asap. LOVE LOVE LOVE this brew!!!

Without breaking this review down point by point, this beer is to me a perfect beer. Great color and head, strong citrus aroma, the lemon is a perfect compliment to the hops. Its also surprisingly refreshing and drinkable for a 10% ABV beer. A great tribute to a great musician. Dogfish does it again.

A - Nice orange/yellow color with a 1 finger head leaving a nice lacing behind on the glass from the DFH alehouse in Church Falls 5/2/2011.

S - delightyfully hoppy and citrusy grapefruit/lemon on the nose - perfect smell.

T - Delicous! The centennial hops and lemon are very prevelent and hold their own against the delicious bitterness of the hops.

M -10%? Are you kidding me?? Meduim body+ (7 out of 10). Hides the alcohol well.

O - Awesome beer, the rarity helps, I would take this beer every time I have the option. Kind of a heavier more intense 2 hearted ale (my go to)

It has a very concentrated smell of resinous pine hops plus some lemons and that 90 minute smell in the background. On the initial sip its a sweet smooth malty sweet taste and then ending with a resinous pine bitterness but then the lemon comes in and mixes in with the hop flavors AND the bitterness subsides a bit and adds a refreshing I want another sip aftertaste to it. You get the lemon mouth pucker a bit too but in a really sweet way... this is world class beer. The only thing I would say that I think is unecessary a bit is the alcohol percentage. Real cold the alcohol bite comes out more in the smell and taste but warmed up the beer starts to turn into perfection. This beer could have easily worked at 8 percent but I guess Dogfish knows more than me. All in all this is an excellent beer and again one of my favorite from this brewery.

This will NOT be your typical review. My quick scan of my fellow Beer drinkers shows most if not all had it from a bottle.

Well, I went to the Rehobeth Beach, DE Brewpub and had it on TAP. Let me tell you (and I've had it from a bottle). It was WONDERFUL ! I love hoppy beers and this was very good indeed.

I bounced it off of "Johnny Cask" (Ale 75) on the Beer engine. Incredible. Hellhound was served in a Tulip and Johnny Cask in a pint glass.

Any doubt ? Go to Rehobeth Beach, DE.. and lose the bottle !

Awesome stuff. Tasted from the tap on location at the DFH Brewpub in Delaware.

A- Hazy and light yella with a medium white head

S- Smells delightful...citrus-y lemon-y with a classic wheat undertone.

T- Lemon-y with fruity undertones again, but a very light perfected lemon zest flavor on from the start.

M- Average, could use maybe a touch less carbonation, but fine as is

O- Love it, everything about this ale from the flavor to the toast to Robert Johnson and the bottle art really gets me. Even made me look up some Rob Johnson and get into the oldie Blues for a day. Awesome DFH!

Just had it on tap at Krugel's Georgetown Deli In Wilkes-Barre , PA. Tulip glass. Pricey. Waiting to taste it for a while. I'm an IPA fan. Sweet and hoppy with a good balance between these flavors and some interesting complexity in the overall taste. I liked it a lot, better than 90 minute. Similar taste profile in my experience to Hopslam which is difficult to obtain here in NEPA. Wish they would offer it in 12oz. bottles all year long.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with a two finger head and excellent lacing.

S: Tons of floral and citrus hops, bready malts, and a hint of lemon zest.

T: Yum!!! Plenty of hops, a nice malt background, and a hint of lemon. Well done!!

M: Medium bodied with decent carbonation.

O: This is a very nice Double IPA from Dogfish Head. I enjoyed it more than most beers I've had recently. I will definitely be buying it again.

First had this on tap almost 3 months ago, and found it to be only just, oh, transcend-freaking-dental. Couldn't wait to try it again, and the beer gods smiled on me a couple weeks ago when I secured a bottle of this and the Faithfull ale on the same day. As it turns out, even though I'm more of a Pearl Jam fan than a Robert Johnson one (but, hey, RESPECT), Hellhound on My Ale eclipses Faithfull.

Burnt orange and coppery amber in color, with a slightly off-white head, and dibs and dabs of lace.

The nose is a big blast of citrus pungency. There's lemon here but it's not intrusive, mingling well with the amped-up Centennial hops, and almost veering into smelling like a big bag o' kind bud. The most miniscule hit of toffee emerges through all this, but that's about all you get on the malt side of things. Clearly Dogfish Head are making a deal in a devil's hopyard here (down and left at the crossroads)?

Oh, this is a beautiful-tasting beer. Lemon and hops are a great marriage, not as redundant a team as it may seem. Centennial hops bring a floral/herbal flair, and while they can also add some citrus flavor, it's the lemon that busts in and brings it all home. But the herbal essence is especially strong and provides excellent balance; lemon never overtakes here. These features mingle with a malt profile that reveals black cherry, apple pipe tobacco, toffee, and caramel. There's a dollop of honey swirling around too. And even pine. Holy hell, every possible facet that hops can bring to a beer is represented here, and that without using 4,789 types of hops.

A friendly alcohol flare underscores the flavors and helps bring it all to a brighter level.

Finishes tart/sour, not nearly as much as biting into lemon flesh, but you're reminded of that. Fairly dry, too, with a lighter, crisper body than most double IPAs, but then this ain't your typical double IPA (and isn't it ironic we should all be so jaded as to look at many double IPAs as a typical everyday thing in beer world? That's 2011 for you, I guess).

Another exemplary beer by Dogfish Head, one of their best new releases in recent memory, and further proof Sam and co. can still rock a complex hop-centric beer with the best of 'em. Hell, they ARE among the best of 'em...

Great Lacing. Milky white 2 finger of head when poured into a Stone 14th aniversary ipa glass. Rich golden color.

Nose: hops malty alcohol pungent similar to 90 minute but just a hint on lemony citrus aroma.

Taste: This is incredible!!! Great hop balance despite the fact that 100 IBU sounds high. Great lemon balance. When I think of lemons I think bitter but I'm picking up sweet lemons here. Less in the middle than the nose but once again, terrific balance here.

Finish: A little bit of bitter lemon is the difference between this and the finish of a regular imperial IPA.They balance the fruit just as well as the Aprihop. If you've ever had that beer from DFH the balance of fruit is just as perfect as that.

If you are a hardcore hop head this beer is exquisite. Get it. What's 15 bucks for some of the best hoppy beer you'll ever have! Great shit!!

A: Pours a slight hazy amber color with a towering white head that settles slow and clings to the glass.

S: Citric rind and herbal and floral notes from the generous hops with a touch of lemon in that mix. Nice roasted grains and caramel sweetness breathing through the thick hop haze. A hint of vanilla and candi sugar too.

T: Bitter bite from citrus and herbal hop oils and lemon at first and it bites the tongue then it remarkably gives way to a smooth sweetness that does not overstate the hops, just balances it out unlike many other double IPA's that I have had. Malt is a luscious caramel and toffee roastedness that almost cleanses the palate and leaves a mellow taste as opposed to an extreme bitter dry bite. Lemon works well and does not intrude. Some fusel alcohol near the middle of the bottle becomes more stated.

M: Very smooth carbonation and a medium body for this one.

D: One of my favorites from this great brewery! It is even better than the 90min IPA. This seems to have a perfect balance and I can not speak enough of the great smooth, not harsh aftertaste for having plentiful hops in this one. Seek it out and try it now while it is fresh!

Served at dogfish pub in Rehoboth. Snifter poured a hazy peachy brown hue with nice head and medium retention. Smell is an intense bouquet of hop aromas ranging from grassy to major citrus and pine. As the nose gave away this is a majorly intense ibu blast at 100 and the lemon gives an intense burst of floor for the centennial hops. I love the story behind this beer as well with a neat twist. The malt profile is creamy and pleasant and with a srm at 10 it's a nice biscuity/mild caramel influence of toasted sugar. I really enjoyed this beer.

Pours a beautiful hazy yellow to golden pour with great, active carbonation. The head is sturdy and bright white, eventually settling into a thin layer of foam. The aromas of hops and citrus are very upfront. Not really picking up the Lemon, as advertised. Taste-- there's the lemon! Hard hitting bitterness engulf the mouth and hammers the tongue...nice. The hop finish is strong and lingers nicely, not acidic. The hop flavor does not linger on the front of the tongue, making the flavor a little less full than I'd like. The heat from the alcohol reaches the back of the throat after the first couple of sips. As the foamy lace makes its way to the bottom of the glass, my mouth won't stop watering. The citrus, hop, and alcohol coalition is brutal (in a good way). The body is medium and only slightly slick after half a glass. Overall the mouthfeel is pleasant if you can stop focusing on the beating the back of your pallet is taking. I really like this AIPA and wil have another and another (not all tonite).

Big bottle. Shared by a friend who had been hanging onto it for a month or more. Worth the wait!

Poured into DFH tulip glasses. Dark orangey-red; small but firm head of foam on top. Aroma is hop-heavy but very inviting and not overwhelming; the lemon mentioned on the label is noticeable and pleasant.

Taste is surprisingly balanced for a 10% beer. More than other Imperial IPA's I've had recently, this is easy-drinking. The malt balances the gargantuan hops AND the alcohol. If not for the heavy mouthfeel, one might forget about the 100 IBU's and the 10% ABV.

Overall-- balance is impressive: aroma, malt sweetness, hop bitterness and hop finish are in the right proportions.

Let's review this beer according to its style and what it advertises in the name.

A: A semi-cloudy copper body with a generous 3/4-1" head. It stayed around for quite some time, diminishing to a 1/8" head while I sipped on it for about 20 minutes.

S: Definitely smells like a typical DIPA; however, a ripe, sour lemon aroma overruns the hops towards the tail end.

T: It's as if someone put a mild hop and lemon rind in my mouth and told me to chew. I liked it! The hop oils definitely overpowered the lemon taste; however, I wasn't surprised being that the beer was meant to be a double IPA.

M: Tastes like a typical DIPA in the beginning and results in tasting like a lemony-hop hybrid DIPA. The lemons aren't sweet so do not expect that as you drink this beer. Imagine biting into a lemon and experiencing the raw, ripe sourness.

D: I'm glad I purchased this 750ml bottle. Dogfish Head puts their own spin... no pun intended... on their brews with Sony and I wasn't disappointed. Was I expecting a lemonade (think Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy) taste? Sort of. I wasn't disappointed when I found out the raw and ripe lemon taste accompanied the strong hops quite well.

Great job DFH!

On draft at Bully’s in Colombia, PA
Notes taken 12/23/2011 at the bar, review today.

10 oz pour into a Dogfish Head Signature Snifter, (at my request, thanks Maria, you are the best!)

Pours a great thick one finger head which slowly reduces to a thin head, lively ale.
Deep amber color, active carbonation, cloudy with yeast.

The smell first hits you with a very vinous, yeast driven aroma, followed by spicy citrus hops, some light malt tries to come out but as the ale warms the lemon brings it on and the hops increase in intensity. Lots going on here, spice/hops/lemon/yeast. Complex.

Crisp, hoppy, citrusy entry on the palate, followed by a vinous hop bitterness, and rich malt in the middle. The lemon comes and goes with the spicy hops and malt fighting for dominance. The lemon touched citrus hops win the battle. Good full mouth feel and superb carbonation. ABV is slightly noticeable and I like it, thank you DFH.

Exceptionally long finish of bitter hops and citrus. The hop oils stick to your mouth forever!!

Very unusual brew, and at first I wasn’t even sure I liked it, but it grew on me rapidly.
Vinous and complex with lots of hop action. There is a definite influence from the lemon but somehow it all balances out. Delicious! I had a second one just to be sure, consistent.
Highly recommended!

Served in a snifter beer glass. Bottled January 2011, served March 24, 2012.

Appearance: Pours a semi-cloudy amber, slightly off-white head came off roughly 1/4" off the body.

Smell: Light barley/yeast, nothing significant that you will not miss.

Taste: This beer explodes heavily complex, so much going on hear that it is moving as fast as a Nascar race in your mouth. Citrus skin, feels of lemon grapefruit slightly bitter. Spicy and a notch sweet, but the sweetness is just a touch.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, you know what???...F'n smooth!

Overall: This is grade "A" beer, yes it lacks aroma but who gives a F*¢k. When you think back and ask yourself how often do you get beer this complex you will not find much else out there. Rare I give a 5 for taste it is definitely worth exploring every cent left in your pocket. I don't look any beer up before I start a review and I had all of this in mind when approaching the blog. I hope you have all enjoyed as much as I have. Salud!

****First Review****
---
750ml bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Rusty color with half an inch of head that left lacing on the glass.

S: Citrus and malt

T/M: Very malty with a citrus finish. Definitely didn't overwhelm me with the reported 100 IBUs (on the bottle). The third sip was the best. Took my mouth a few seconds to get used to the strong lemon flavor. It's 10% and you can definitely taste that it's a strong beer. Got a warm feeling in my stomach after drinking it.

O: I really enjoyed this beer. I wish it was easier for me to get. I had to drive 45 minutes to buy it and I could only buy one. Another very strong DFH beer. Yum

Hope that was okay for my first review. I'm sure there will be many more in my near future.

This beer pours a slightly cloudy orangish golden color, with a thick, fluffy off white head. the head fades very slowly, leaving a massive curtain of lace.

This beer has a citrusy aroma. I detect lemons, grapefruit, and a mild orange aroma. I pretty much only detect fruity hop aromas.

This beer tastes like it smells. Lemon and grapefruit up front with some orange in the back. It has a mild grassy flavor also.

This beer is crisp and refreshing. The alcohol makes an apprarance on the way down. Although well hidden in the aroma and flavor, it warms the throat on its way down. Carbonation is high, fitting the style well.

This beer wouldnt make a great session beer. It is high in alcohol, and aggressive. It isnt a bad beer, but the flavor would become cloying after a few pints.

Overall: Thanks to inlimbo77 for once again hooking me up with some great beer from Dogfish Head. I always love a chance to try something from them. I liked this beer. The lemon was a pleasent change. Well worth trying.

This appears golden to orange in a snifter. Tons of pillowy white head.

Nose is particularly citrusy but this is said to have a dose of lemon rind.

Alcohol right of the bat. Easy drinking but a great statement from the hops. The malt bill is fairly tame from compared to what the hops and citrus bring to the table. Lemon plays off the grain and hay characteristics but settles well.

This has to be one of my recent favorites from dogfish head. The fruit attributes and malt characteristics play very well together and don't feel so much like they were just thrown together on a whim.

Poured from 25.4oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear, light amber color with a large, foamy off-white head that dissipates slowly that leaves behind thick spots of lace.

Smell: Woody and earthy with a hint of citrus. A nice bit of buttery malt with some other fruity hints.

Taste: Begins herbal and citric, middling to some grainy flavor and finishing with more citrus, pleasant earthy bitterness, and a slight booze hint.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with light carbonation and a sticky finish that warms from the alcohol.

Overall: A very well-done IPA, not the best, but definitely worth a try. Dogfish Head has made yet another winner. Kudos for the awesome label art as well.

A: The beer is a deep golden color, with a huge white foamy head. It is slightly hazy, leaves good lacing on the glass, and has a steady stream of slow bubbles.

S: A very familiar IIPA hop scent. I get some mellow grapefruit scent, some flowery perfumes which are quite nice, and only a hint of alcohol. No malt scents come across for me at all. It smells good...it really does remind me of a ladies perfume.

T: I get lots of grapefruit flavor coming through. The beer label says it's brewed with lemons, but it doesn't really taste a lot like lemons to me. Whatever they did, it just tastes like a really great IIPA. The bitterness is right there, but isn't harsh.

M: The mouthfeel on this beer is perfect. I can go on to describe it but it really is A+. It is incredibly easy to drink. I could down a glass of this without batting an eye. The bitterness is there for IIPA lovers, but it is not harsh at all which I believe makes it easier to drink. It's a pretty dry beer, which suits the hop character.

O: Overall I was highly impressed with the beer. It was a sleeper for me. I bought the bottle because I've never tried this one from DFH, and admittedly I was a bit apprehensive about trying a lemon beer. I was ready to open a bottle of beer lemonade. Instead I was greeted with a wonderfully hopped IIPA. If there are lemons in this beer, they tuck in with the citrus flavors of the hops, because it's hard for me to differentiate the two. I would recommend this to anybody who enjoys hoppy beers. I would drink it again, and probably will.

Pours a lighty hazy orange-ish to yellow color with an off white head. In the aroma, pine and citrus hops, with a small alcohol note. In the taste, orange citrus hops that end in pine, with a small alcohol burn all the way through. A small hop bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry orange citrus in the aftertaste. Big hops and big alcohol, although mostly hidden, quite fantastic.

T: Lemon zest start, short east coast IPA finish, with lingering relatively smooth malts and a sweet lemony aftertaste.

M: Nice body.

O: I do not think this tasted at all like any of DF's standard offerings. The nose was all IPA, but the taste was not. The lemon taste was interesting. All in all, a well crafted, well balanced, extremely enjoyable beverage.

2011 Vintage - Batch 2

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a DFH Signature glass.

Appearance: Pours a very nice deep gold almost amber in color - nice frothy head stays on top of this one for a bit. Nice clarity. Good head retention, lacing sticks around but somewhat clears up as the head goes away.

Smell: I really get that big lemon aroma when I first take a whiff of this - the citrus profile from those centennial hops are bright and floral but very overwhelmed by this huge lemon aroma! Almost like taking a bottle of lemon juice and squirting it directly into your nostrils. A tinge of alcohol is present as well upon a deeper sniff of this beer - very aromatic and pleasantly warming to say the least.

Taste: Upon the first sip I acutally get the big hop flavors here, those hops are bright and citrusy - very similar hop profile as the 90 Minute but then out of no where comes this HUGE whallop of lemon! Lemon zest quickly takes over and really rips apart your taste buds! A small, but flavorful malt profile kicks in giving off some toasted malt sweetness but quickly gets kicked away from that lemon! Minty and a bit of a bite from the alcohol plays into the finish. Very different and pleasing to say the least.

Mouthfeel: Light to slightly medium bodied - this beer is actually pretty light to say the least - for 10% ABV you'd think this thing would be alot bigger as far as mouthfeel goes but it sits nicely on the tongue without being overly heavy. Nice bitterness.

Drinkability: This beer really punches you in the face with lemon - but I actually enjoyed it. The hops play along with the lemon addition perfectly - adding up to be a balanced yet exciting beer to sip and savor. The added malt profile smooth things up a bit but you really grow to appreciate that lemon flavor that really show it's strength. Another crazy, yet flavorful and satisfying concoction from the Dogfish Head family - I'll take another bottle!
