An approachable 32oz growler fill from New Beer. ;)

Baby Duvel tulip. Gorgeous, clear, cherry/amber color. Just a faint wispy ring of off-white head.

Smell is cherry pits upfront, followed by toasted malt & orange oil. Ugly aerosols soon follow.

Mildly sweet, slightly caramelized malt. A woody/barky note. Appropriate oxidation I think. Soapy, more so then rindy hops. Light sour cherry & notes of fruit peel. Bitter, dried out finish helps me endure till the end.

Slightly, slightly syrupy, but lots of carbonation & bitterness to keep things flowing. Not terribly difficult for the quoted 15%ABV, but it doesn't feel that far off. No warming effect. I'd guess 12%, based on DFH's notoriety for being inaccurate.

It's missing that extra note, but it feels & drinks much better then most other American barleywines in my opinion.

Here's a 2010 that's only 11 days old, according to my DFH server from a brewery event.

Into a red wine glass, this pours a clear burnt orange-amber color and holds a decent thin head. I pick up an overall aroma of sweet dark cherry and toasted malt. There is a stiff note of alcohol in the backdrop but nothing that should scare away the taste buds because this opens up with a pleasant sweet and lightly bitter feel into a complex body of...a lot going on...Perhaps this truly is a youth "trying to find its identity" as suggested by our server. At its center, I can best sense the taste of the deepest of cherry flavor and caramel malt with a mouth clinging complex finish. CAUTION: This hides its abv like you wouldn't believe and is thus, DANGEROUSLY DRINKABLE...

The barleywine that all should be compared to in my opinion. Poors a nice reddish/copper color. Can really smell the fruit (dates/figs) and initial taste can be slightly harsh but smooths out after a few sips. I have been drinking these for about 6 years and upset that this will actually be the first year I'm making myself age them. Will followup on smell/alcohol/taste next year.

12 oz bottle was poured into a snifter. Bottled 2012B. 15 months in a bottle sounds good to me.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy copper color with vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Super awesome lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Caramel malts, figs, raisins, bananas, dates, plums, and citrus.

Taste: Same as above with some nice tingly bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, a little dry, medium to full bodied, medium carbonation, and a little dry.

Overall: i know it's 15%, but it doesn't feel or taste like it. Simply amazing and I'm looking for more.

Poured into a snifter. Bottleneck says Bottled in 2012.

A- Pours an orangeish dark amber with a 1/4 inch off-white head that's short-lived dropping down to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a tiny center patch of surface foam. Spackled lacing leaves a resilient solid ring behind on the glass.

S- Oaky, band-aid-like aroma that's semi-sweet with some dark fruit notes.

T- Flavor is similar to the aroma with more astringent tones but the booze is relatively well-hidden for how high the ABV is. Not very much dark fruit but it is sweet rather than bitter. Balanced? I guess, since the flavors don't clash and it's not too hot. But that's the thing: there's not a whole lot of flavor. Just sweetness, alcohol, oaky astringency and mild dark fruit.

M- Slightly sticky with medium-low carbonation and a medium body.

O- It's not that I don't like this beer. I just don't find it to be very interesting. Drinkable, yes. Exciting, no. For a DFH beer with a high ABV and similar oakiness, see my username.

Appearance: Beautiful ruby amber with thin khaki head which disappears quickly. Some clarity.

Smell: Fruit, sweet malts, figs, wine.

Taste: Wine, figs.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation. Definitely let this one warm up a bit and don't drink at fridge temperature. I found the warmer the beer got, the less the taste of alcohol there was. Initially it was very present and lingered on the back of the tongue for a while, but the flavors really came out more as the beer warmed.

Overall: Great barleywine and even better that it's 15%! Still have yet to have a DFH brew I don't like. 3.9/5.

Every time I drink this beer I find it unbalanced and a complete booze bomb.

It says to age proper for a couple of years on the label. I have had a freshy, a two year old, and a four years old example, (all cellared properly), and they were all sweet, boozy heavy, and generally unpleasant beers.

It never seems to smooth out. Super boozy and prone to headaches.

However it looks great, solid head and a clear beautiful color. That is really what it has going for it in my honest opinion.

One is better off with a old ruffian, a hog heaven, or a bigfoot.

12oz single from a fellow beer enthusiast. Poured into a DFH snifter...

A: Hazy, tea / light brown, amber; thin, half-finger light beige head; a minimal ring of retention leaves no lace - pretty sure this brew cleans the glass at 15%.

S: Sweet, bready malt; figs; light hazelnut; some pine cone and alcohol, too; very layered aroma.

T: Follows the nose... Sweet figs, molasses, brown sugar; followed by pine and alcohol... whoa - huge flavor.

M: Medium mouthfeel; low carbonation; hot.

O: A doozy of a barleywine at 15%. Crazy, but pretty drinkable considering the abv. Figs and dates seem like natural complements to the malt profile of most barleywines - so it makes sense. A tasty, big beer that's definitely a sipper... took me two plus hours to get through this one!

Based on the reviews, many people did not enjoy this beer as much as I did. I sampled one while saving the other three bottles for aging purposes. I look forward to the maturation of the others.

Olde School was a light orange color with a modest white head. It left some lacing on the sides of the glass. In the aroma, I discovered malt and a mild level of hops. There was nothing about the aroma which was overwhelming. In the initial taste, I detected notes of raisin, fig, mild maltiness, and a respectable level of nuttiness. For an American Barleywine, I expected more hops to be in the front. Yet at the same time, I was not disappointed when I discovered with was not a hop-bomb. It reminded me of an English Barleywine. The high level ABV left a warming sensation with the nuttiness progressing toward sour in the finish. This beer makes a great night cap on a cold winter night. In recent memory, this is one of my favorite Dogfish Head efforts.

Poured from bottle into a snifter glass

Appearance – Pours a hazy copper orange with a tiny off white head. The head fades very fast leaving only a scant amount of foam on the top of the brew.

Smell –The aroma is of biscuit and malt mixed with lots of fruit aromas of darker fruits . Mixed with these aromas are a almost light astringent turpentine aroma as well as aromas of some herbal and earthy hops. While the turpentine aroma exists it actually is rather appropriate and matching to the other sweeter, maltier and boozy aromas of the beer.

Taste – The taste s very malty and sweet upfront with big bready flavors and a strong fruit flavor of a mainly of a fig and raisin nature mixed with a strong caramel and brown sugar taste. These flavors create a base for the brew and are joined by many other tastes throughout. A light alcohol flavor comes to the tongue more toward the middle of the taste and persists to the end, but for a 15 % abv brew, it is actually very mild. Other fruit flavors of apple and tangerine come to the tongue as well with an augmentation of the dark fruit flavor. More toward the end of the taste there is a very light lemon flavor as well as a slight citrus hop taste that mixes with the rest to overall leave a rather sweet, malty, and just ever so lightly boozy and hopped flavors.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is thick and syrupy side with a very low carbonation. Both are very appropriate for the style as well as allow all the wonderful fruit and bready flavors as well as complement the boozy and lightly hoped flavors quite well.

Overall – This is a very tasty and sweet with a very well hidden alcohol taste (at least for a 15 % abv brew). A very nice and quite easy drinking for a barley wine. Delicious.

Dated 2012A 00:51 (whatever the hell that means)

A- Pours super hazy. A murky dark orange looking color. Almost no head. Monster alcohol legs. An intimidating looking brew.

S- Huge caramel notes and a massive dark fruit presence. A slight grain and fruity yeast. Not a lot of alcohol smell but it burns the nostrils. Interesting stuff.

T- A massive caramel taste and feel up front. A light toffee and sweet caramel sweetness. The dark fruits are very big in this beer. There is a huge fig presence and a lot of raisin as well. A slight roasty character. Less alcohol taste the I was expecting from such a massive brew. A pretty big bitterness but I dont get any hop presence.

M- Huge beer. A big syrupy, sticky booze bomb. A very warming feel. Flavors arent too overwhelming.

O- I really liked this Barleywine. Its massive and syrupy. I bet it will age incredibly.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into an E&J snifter.

A- A deep rich redish amber colored beer that almost seems more like a copper color. It Has a 2 finger bubbly off-white head that dissipated down to a medium sized collar with a slight amount of lace left upon the surface. The amount of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass would probably lead most to believe that its much more well carbonated than it actually is. While drinking it, it left a nice amount of white lacing along the sides of the snifter.

S- You can definitely smell the figs and the dates, which when blended with the smell of the barley malts, gives of some notes of other dark fruits such as dried black cherries. There is a slight note of breadiness towards the end that reminds me somewhat of sourdough before finishing with an alcoholic tinge.

T- The taste is dominated mostly by the flavor of sweet dark fruits that do little to help mask the intense alcoholic flavor. Although this is a super malty barley wine it almost seems like dogfish head added the figs and dates to this beer just so that the flavor of the alcohol would be less prominent, although the sweetness and the flavor of the figs and the dates is really rather enjoyable. The finish is where the alcohol really makes itself known, leaving a slight burn at the end. It really packs quite a punch.

M- Heavy mouthfeel. There is a decent enough amount of carbonation that its "smooth", but not "velvety smooth" like some other barleywines are.

O- Intense and BOLD BOLD BOLD BOLD. Just like I remember 120 minute and World Wide stout being,. Much more alcoholic than I anticipated but at the same time, now that I think about it, that was really rather foolish of me. I'm really not surprised. I would love love love! to see how this ages. Overall, it's a real asskicker!

Appearance – Pours a clear amber copper color with a medium head that quickly thins to almost nothing, with a decent lacing.

Smell – A pleasant sweet boozy scent. The scent is very unique so it’s difficult to describe. I guess malt, caramel, oak, and candied fig is the best I can do.

Taste – Booze, candied figs, oak, and maybe even some hops.

Mouthfeel – A light alcohol burn, but not too bad for 15%abv. Medium body, light carbonation, and a candied booze aftertaste.

Drinkability – A very nice barleywine; very drinkable for 15%.

A 2010 edition, stored at a pretty steady 42 - 50 degrees F, though sometimes at lower temperatures. Served at about 50 degrees or so in a tulip glass.

Aroma: During the pour a strong smell of alcohol rose from the bottle and the glass. That aroma held over time. There was also a sweet caramel nose, with some esters and dark fruits--plums mainly. Very little hop character.

Appearance: This poured out a copper-brown color with little lacing and moderate carbonation. It started with a fluffy white, full head that dissipated fairly quickly.

Taste: The flavor was big, of course. Strong, sweet caramel and malt, esters, dark fruits (raisins, plums), a bit of clove in the background, and alcohol. It was a very robust, complex flavor, and much mellower than the 2012 I had.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation, but big mouthfeel. Chewy, but exceedingly smooth.

Overall: This beer has aged extremely well and I'm sorry to see it go. It was my last one.

Lovely copper color in the St. Bernardus globe. Intense aromas of warm butterscotch and dark fruit compote, along with the sharp tang of booze. You can see how thick the body is from the syrupy swirls in the glass, but on the tongue it's just the right consistency.

The alcohol is actually a good feature, cutting through the sweetness like a light sabre. The malty sweetness is like a good cream sherry, and the modest bitterness gives an interesting edge. This is rather tangy and all in all it's a surprisingly good balance of hot, sweet, and bitter. Lingering aftertaste of burnt raisin bread with some hoppy bitterness.

This is very sippable and one of the better offerings from the weirder and weirder Dogfish Head. From the 12 oz bottle bought at Grapevine Liquors in Denver, which is a nice package size for having a snifter or two.

Glass: Snifter

Appearance: Dark amber, thin about a half a fingers worth of a mocha colored head that dissipated almost as quickly as it formed.

Smell: Alcohol, molasses, and figs. I swear I can detect the faint aroma of lager yeast but I know that can't be right.

Taste: Hops, alcohol, molasses, figs, sweet malts, and a big alcohol finish and yet surprisingly still very smooth.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry texture, alcohol warming, and a dry finish.

Pour from a 12oz bottle into two (2) 6oz mini snifter glasses.

A- Golden brown. little to no head. carbonation is very low. cannot see through glass. viscosity is very high.

S - not much. traces of fig and dates.

T - basic? (not ordinary, but chemically) Sour. the bottle says: 'This ages with the best of them' - let it do just that. at 15% ABV its very strong. would love to taste this in a year or two. figs and dates are very apparent.

M - full taste. alcohol burns the tongue a tiny bit.

O - Certainly recommend some aging. At current state it has a great base. Some mellowing would do wonders.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled in 2011. Looks like 4/11/2011.

Appearance - Deep copper with some sediment and a short lived head of large discrete bubbles. Nothing but a pencil thin collar when all is said and done. Not really all that viscous in appearance.

Smell - Rough from the booze. It smells all of 15% and then some. Fruity and just a hint of caramel, but it's a lot of alcohol and not a pleasant alcohol aroma either. As it warms, it gets a bit raisiny.

Taste - A fair bit better than the smell, as the alcohol is more subdued. Much more raisin and caramel with the lighter fruit flavors coming farther back. The alcohol enhances some of those apple flavors in the back. Finishes hot, but not terribly sweet.

Mouthfeel - I expected it to be more syrupy, but it's thinner than I expected. Maybe it's dried out a bit in a year and a half. Medium carbonation. Hot.

Overall - After the first couple of sips, I thought I might dump it. Now I think I'll get through at least half of it before deciding I don't need any more alcohol tonight.

2012 version that pours a slightly hazy amber color with a hint of orange. A little less than a one-finger off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly but leaves a smattering of lacing.

The aroma is complex and centers around the malt. Some fruity notes are there, including the date/raisin, some light pear, but no hops that i can detect. But, the caramel malt dominates the aroma.

The flavor is really good, too. Of course, centered around the sweet maltiness, but there is also a sweet fruit flavor that blends the date/raisin/fig/apple/pear flavors. The finish also brings just a touch of bitterness, which is not clearly related to hops, but it's not roasted malt either. So, a mystery, but also a bonus, since the rest of the flavor is sweet.

Very thick mouthfeel, and I only get a bit of the booziness with the high abv. I really like this more than I thought I would. It's a different take on a barelywine, but not totally in a different mold. I definitely recommend it.

A: Pours a very dark amber, almost brown, with 2 fingers width of light tan head, which has great retention and leaves a small amount of lacing.

S: Odd aroma on this one, booze and apple, with some burnt candied sugar, hints of caramel/toffee.

T: Incredibly sweet. Taste and nose dont match up too well. Its got a vinous, cheap wine type of character. Booze. Some citrusy notes. Its very much got a cheap malt liquor-esque quality, and call me crazy but its reminiscent of Four Lokos in that regard, very booze with an artificially fruit sweetness. Needless to say, "reminiscent of Four Lokos" is not a good quality.

M/D: Full bodied but not thick, slightly syrupy, carbonation is appropriate. Drinkability is average.

O: This one was interesting, and interesting is not always a good thing. Im probably giving it the benefit of the doubt with my ratings, but I do give it some bonus points for being a big boozy beer. Its not necessarily bad, and for a 15% barleywine the price is great, but its not something I would probably drink again. Maybe Ill grab one or two to sit on for a number of years and see if it gets better. As is, its a pass (unless you are trying to get drunk cheaply).

The body sits a deep amber in color with some patches of bubbles over top of the liquid. A thin collar of foam remains.

Ripe granny smith apples, figs, dates, booze, toffee, plums, and caramel leap from the glass. Broad and complex.

Figs and dates up front with toffee, caramel, plums, and brown sugar through the middle. The finish is a hearty dose of booze and lightly tart granny smith apples. As this guy sits around, some bitter orange peel and vanilla come out. There is a bit of lingering sugary sweetness with a layer of bitterness that sweeps in.

Full-bodied with low carbonation. The booze makes this a little prickly.

A big, bad barleywine that is a little rough around the edges. Broad and complex, with layers of flavor. The booze is a little intrusive.

P- Pittsburgh Bottle Cafe

A- a copper orange color with minimal head that dissipates quickly. quite opaque as well.

S- a dark candied apple vinegar smell to it. I also get some fig and raisin in the nose as well. dark malts as well.

F- fig and raisins come out on the tongue and the apple goes to background. Very good combinations though.

M- Chewy and full of alcohol. very nice

O- I am taking my time with this bad boy. Very nice complements all around with the flavors.

Appearance: beautiful copper color; thin white head that dissipates rapidly
Aroma: caramel and malt hit right away; some really nice fruit notes-cherry, grape, maybe a hint of apple, dark fruit; a little boozy
Taste: follows the nose almost exactly; big caramel malty sweetness up front; some dates in there too; moves into the fruit flavors-cherry, grape, fig, raisin; a very slight hop presence; just a bit of roasty goodness; finishes with an alcohol kick and apple tartness; aftertaste is fruity, oaky, ashy, slightly dry and very pleasant
Mouthfeel: feels like a good red wine; on the heavier side, but not heavy per se; perfectly carbonated
Overall Impression: wow, I really like this beer; I have to be careful, at 15% this will kick your butt; very smooth and drinkable, as soon as I swallow I want another taste; sip on this guy all night with a great book and you’ll be just fine; it’s just a darn good beer; I really cannot wait to see what a year or 2 does to this guy…if I can resist that long; did I mention that I really like this…just a great brew that blew my mind; I will probably look for this every time it comes out...it is not fair, it just gets better with every sip!

2012 Olde School poured into a snifter

A - a beautiful coppery orange.

S - Sweet. Tons of sweetness. Right away it's got me thinking of a sweet white wine instead of a beer. Dark fruit, citrus, and orange peel dominate the nose with the orange peel adding some acidity.

T - Sweet and fruity. The nose was a great preview of the taste. Tons of sweetness and citrus. Hints of orange peel bitterness carry the finish. I am loving the taste of this brew.

M - Chewy, almost syrupy, and nice and warming.

O - What a wonderful brew. This being only my second barleywine ever, I still do not know the style that well, but this was just amazing. Great sweetness. A nice smooth alcohol warmness. The, wait let me check, 15% alcohol - really? damn, this brew could get me in trouble - the 15% is hidden really well and doesn't dominate the brew with booziness. I loved this brew fresh. I can only imagine what some time in the cellar would do for it.

T: lots of heat to start. then as it warms the fruitier it gets. similar to the nose, figs and plums. lots of brown sugar. burnt brown sugar. lingering sweetness for days.

M: carb could use some more bubbles. full mother fucking body.

D: for how fresh this is im really enjoying it. I expected even more of a hot mess like some of DFH other big bodied brews. however everything seems to work nicely here and gives me something to look forward to for the bottle in my cellar.
