My Antonia (named after the Willa Cather read), is a continually-hopped imperial pilsner. This lager for ale lovers is citrusy, sweet and refined.

My Antonia started out as a collaboration beer when Sam brewed it at Birra del Borgo (hope you can read Italian) outside Rome, Italy, with owner/brewer Leonardo DiVencenzo in October 2008. In 2010, we began brewing My Antonia here in Delaware for U.S. distribution.

750-ml bottle poured into a Dogfish Head Signature glass.

Pours a bright straw yellow with a bit of a golden tinge and a bit of haze. A huge (we're talking four fingers huge) white head of fluffy foam recedes slowly to a thick, rocky cap, leaving behind a beautiful latticework of lace as the glass empties.

Aroma is a bit pungent, with earthy, herbaceous hop notes dancing around some spicy notes and hints of flower. Quite a bold hop aroma, but the varieties are obviously not the bolder, citrusy American styles; the aroma suggests an amped-up Pilsner -- exactly what it should.

Medium-bodied with a fairly light mouthfeel, with tight, tiny bubbles gently brushing the palate. A solid honey-ish, slightly bready malt backbone supports a whopping hop flavor, with layers of spice, herb and fruit, notes of passionfruit and white pepper, a bit of basil perhaps. The hops become rather drying near the back, leading into an off-dry finish with a lingering grass-like character.

Quite well-balanced, with an alcohol level that is hidden very well (until it sneaks up on you, of course). A bit heavier and more pungent than a regular Pils, such is to be expected from an "Imperialized" version of the style, and this one pulls it off very well, taking all of the bits of a good Pilsner and extrapolating upon them. Subtlety is not its main suit, but toned down, subtlety would be the name of the game -- this is definitely a top-notch example of what it means for an American brewery to take a classic staple and give it a bigger, bolder flair.
