Notes:
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Pours motor oil black with a small brown head that quickly fades away.
Lots of roasted coffee notes, semi-sweet chocolate, sweet cereal grains, mild pine.
Deep smooth roasted character going on with bittersweet chocolate and sweetness. Some bitterness to balanced flavors out.
Big dry finish and light body.
Go get it!

A: Thin layer of foamy, dark mocha head. Dark raw umber/black. Impenetrable.
S: Dark roasted coffee. Burned toast. Definitely smelling the honey and something kind of spicy. Nice. I like it.
T: Yum. Usual stout flavors I'd expect. Very dark and roasted. Burned toast and coffee. Slightly sweetened with honey notes and something a bit odd and plant-y in the aftertaste that I'm guessing is the gesho root that I'm note entirely sure how I feel about.
M: Smooth, heavy with slight carbonation. Lingers, but lightly, not oppressively.
O: I quite like this. I'd say it's definitely worth trying, though perhaps find a friend because it's a heavy beer in a big bottle for one person.

Appearance - Pitch black pour with a one finger dark caramel head. Head dissipates quickly to just a dusting over the beer. No carbonation visible.
Smell - Starts sweet. Smell of dark fruit quickly takes over and you could mistake for a glass of merlot.
Taste - No sweetness which one would expect from a beer brewed with honey. However, there is a good balance. Not too bittter.
Mouthfeel - Beer is smooth on the way down, however, tongue is left tingling from the carbonation. More and more drinkable with each sip.
Overall - Overall this is a great beer. Very easy to drink at 9% abv. I will add a few to the cellar to see how these do after some aging.
Once again DFH does not disappoint.

Bomber poured into a Duvel tulip. Deep black body with a nearly three-finger dark tan head. Very good retention and nice lacing. One of the better looking Imperial Stouts I've seen.
Solid aroma that is fairly complex. Roasted malt dominates, but other notes include chocolate, earthy hops, and honey.
The flavor steps it up a notch but does follow the aroma closely. Plenty of roasted malt flavor, but the honey comes through a little stronger than in the aroma and provides a nice balance. The earthy hop notes provide a nice follow up to the light bitterness of the malt.
Thick texture in the mouthfeel and no real notice of the alcohol. Overall, an excellent stout that I would enjoy having again.

9.00% ABV confirmed. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap acquired at Wally's Wine in Westwood, California, and served into a New Belgium goblet in me gaff in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given its current reviews, but Dogfish Head usually disappoints. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's one of the most overrated breweries in the USA. That said, I could go for a good imperial stout and I'm hoping for the best with this one.
Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm considerably over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
As I started pouring, it became clear no head was going to form, so I upped the vigor substantially.
A: Pours a 2.5 finger rich dark tan coloured head of nice cream, thickness, and retention. Frothy and appealing. Body colour is a solid nontransparent black. Opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. A good appearance for the style, but I had to coax the head out meself. Also, the colour of the head is a strange tan; this is not the rich gorgeous head of great imperial stouts. It's a cheap imitation.
Sm: Way too hoppy for the style; floral character abound. Strange honey. Almost nectary - in a bad way. Strange malts and sugars; I certainly get a raw sugar. Yeah, that's not appealing for the style really at all. No yeast or alcohol comes through. An average strength aroma. I'm not looking forward to this one. But the strangeness has a bent appeal. Let's give her a go.
T: Raw sugar joins with poor bland dark malts and honey to form the foundation. It's hopped a bit excessively, though the floral character doesn't compete with the malty sweetness. It's certainly a unique take on the style, but it lacks true body. It comes off a bit artificial, and the thickness seems to emerge from the carbonation and texture rather than the actual flavour. Lacks sufficient roast for the style. The alcohol is well hidden. No yeast comes through. No chocolate or vanilla here. A fair amount of caramel. As it warms, the honey seems to grow better suited to the dark malts. It's a tasty brew; it's just a different take on the style than what I usually like. Sort of like a good schwarzbier mixed with a mediocre imperial stout. Surprisingly simple for the style - and for a blend (even coming from Dogfish Head). I do like it for what it is, but it's not unique or special. Decently balanced.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Overly carbonated. Good thickness. It drinks more like an imperial porter than an imperial stout. That said, the mouthfeel suits the flavours pretty well. It just doesn't feel tailored to them. Good presence on the palate; though it is a bit much for its lack of flavour.
Dr: Hides its ABV quite well. It's drinkable; I'll enjoy polishing off this bottle. But I wish it were easier to quaff. It's a different take on the style than what most are used to. I heard this was meant to pair well with chili; I could definitely see that. In fact, it's probably an ideal beer to pair with chili. But it's not a great imperial stout. Still, it may be one of the better Dogfish Head brews I've had. It's too sugary for me to want another bottle. I won't be having this again, and I'm fine with that. It's far too pricey for its quality, but that's to be expected with this brewery. I guess it ultimately met my expectations: it's a passable imperial stout with an interesting touch. There's nothing wrong with that, but I could easily get a better imperial stout at well below this price point.

Appearance: Black, some vestiges of red when held to light. Heavy and dark. Head is a dark tan, creamy, full, with decent retention. Eventually drops to a spotty cap. Some tiny lacing.
Smell: Sweet tobacco leaf. Roasted malts. Semisweet chocolate chips. Milk chocolate. Sweet roasted raisins. brunt corny cardboard with some leather backing. Sweet cooked roasted malts. Grainy. Hits at some backing honey and earthy hops. Wet tobacco leaf.
Taste: Honey, earthy, roasted sweetness. Raw honeycomb. Deeply roasted. Big fruity sweetness hits mainly at some.soy sauce. Mildly acetic with some weird fruit in the back. Reminds me of a fig or plum balsamic vinegar. Almost a rhubarb quality. Burnt, but more not charred. Think burnt fry. Plums. Roasted tobacco leaf. Almost like smoking a fish pipe. Old coffee beans. Rhubarb, to reiterate.
Mouthfeel: Full body, almost syrupy. Moderate carbonation with some backing dryness. A little.acrid on the finish.
Overall: Bitches poop.
Batch 1 seemed to be a little more complex. This one comes across as raw and unfinished. Still a ton going on but it lacks the depth and never really melds. Weirdly sweet.

Consumed 11/10/12
Appearance: Black - mostly black, dark, dark brown around the edges - pours with a nice, light brown head, fades to a decent ring that leaves some nice streaks
Smell: Dirt - roots and earth - burnt, roasty - chocolate malts, dark chocolate, coffee, and honey - some caramel in the background, lightly sweet
Taste: Roasty and dirty - chocolate malts, dark chocolate - roasty, lightly burnt coffee - very earthy, dirt-like, a light spiciness that I'm assuming is gesho root - dark caramel - lightly sweet, nicely balanced by the roast - honey, and a touch of alcohol
Mouthfeel: Medium to full, lightly sticky, nicely carbonated
Overall: Bitches.
Bitches Brew is not my favorite album by Miles Davis. So I suppose it would follow that Bitches Brew is not my favorite beer by Dogfish Head. It's a tasty imperial stout, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the honey sweetness or how this reminds me of Miracle Grow soil. Regardless, it's very interesting.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a snifter, 2012 edition. This pours a pitch black thick liquid with a smaller short lived mocha head. The smells are of dark roasted malts, some dark chocolate, black coffee, a little sweetness. The feel is thick and creamy like expected. The taste is pretty good, dark roasted malts, some medium bitterness, a little sweetness. Its a pretty tasty stout but also a little safe.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a small snifter. Tudor brown head, moderate retention on a black body.l Clear, oily lacing. Aroma includes coffee, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, and it appears to be a bunch of hops nestled beneath these bold flavors. There is also a hard to describe uniqueness to the smell that I can't describe that I have to assume is gesho root? Taste includes coffee, roasted malt, some hoppy spicing, slight alcohol, mild malt sweetness. Thick mouthfeel, tongue coating. Awesome.

2010 vintage. Poured into a Schlafly snifter with Bitches Brew queued up on the stereo.
A - pours a nice dark brown/black color with a solid looking 1 finger, chocolaty head sitting on top of it.
S - nose consists of milk chocolates, some spicy ginger (gesho?), and a little bit of honey...just as the label reads oddly enough
T - Bitches Brew, the album, opens up mysteriously and rhythmically; this beer opens up showing more of its hand with sweet honey mixed in with chocolate malts. These move on to more chocolates through the middle. A little bit of the gesho root adds a nice ginger-esque spicy refreshing flavor, but the chocolate overtakes it on the finish. Nice.
M - luxuriously smooth and full - pretty solid mouthfeel
D - overall, this beer has nice complexity, but I was hoping for a little more pronounced flavors from the honey and gesho. But, like the album, you don't know what's around the next corner, and this beer kept me guessing at times. Cool concept and well executed. Recommended for the experience!

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a goblet.Pours thick and heavy with a creamy head with small bubbles that clings to the side. Very complex aroma, with licorice, allspice, espresso, chocolate notes, plus a liberal amount of roasted malt and hops filling out the back end. Wonderful sweet and malty flavors, with some bitterness coming out from the hops and the roasting of the barley. This is a robust beer, with moderate carbonation. Overall, what can I say? This is one of my all time favorite beers. It is loyal to the imperial stout style, yet takes a lot of chances, too.

Incidentally, reviewing this while watching the Bitches Brew Beer Masters episode. Pitch black with a light tan froth. Not much lacing. Aromas are bitter chocolate and berry fruits. Taste is bitter. Old fruit and bitter chocolate. A bit of tartness at the end of each sip. Don't really pull out the sweetness but dry and bitter really dominate. Thinner body and good carbonation. The warmer it gets the more the alcohol pulls through.

On tap at City Beer Store, San Francisco. Gorgeous pour into a narrow goblet. Black, with a finger of tan delicate head. Lacing sticks and fizzes on the glass before sliding down and completely away.
The aroma is a disappointment. Maybe just too cold, but even after sitting for 15 min. I'm getting very little but roastiness. No sweet or wood or fruit. Just black coffee.

Poured from Bomber into Snifter.
A: Pours black, with minimal head. Can't see through it, minimal carbonation and moderate lacing on the glass.
S: Get a strong chocolate and honey scent. Sweetness on the nose with some roasted malt.
T: Getting the sweet honey flavor, with some roastyness to help balance it. Still pretty sweet for me. Strong chocolate finish.
M: Pretty thin for an imperial stout. Flat on the palate.
O: Worth a shot, its decent but not worth the $13 price tag I paid. I tend to like thicker stouts, but solid in its own right.

this beer pours black as DOT road tar. Even the foam is black, surprisingly it lingers for a little. The taste is is not at all what I expected. I was waiting to be knocked of my feet sort of a Laphroaig response the first time you have a wee dram but instead I found this brew to be very drinkable for a stout.

Bottle in August of 2012 (date stamped: 2012A 1402). Opened about two months after bottling.
A: A slow pour into a standard pint glass resulted in about a one-finger, dark mocha colored head. Overtime the head dissipated to a collar and left a pretty good lacing. The beer poured very syrupy, and it was a deep rich mahogany and absolutely opaque.
S: The aroma was dark unsweetened chocolate, honey, toasted barley, prunes and currants, and just a bit of sweet malt, too. It was a very complex aroma.
T: The taste began with a dark roasted malt and honey sweetness and then a mild earthy and peaty bitterness joined in that was just enough to provide a little balance and take the edge off the sweetness. Underneath these main flavors there were also hints of prunes, currants, toasted barley, and unsweetened chocolate.
M: The body was heavy, smooth and full. And, there was only a small amount of carbonation.
O: This was a winner. There was plenty of hype around this beer. For me, it really measured up. This one really hits the “wow” category. For fans of sweeter beers this one goes way beyond a “must try.” What really makes this beer different is how the gesho’s mild earthy and peat-like bitterness fit very well with the sweet malt and honey. The gesho does only enough to keep the sweetness from going over the top, but still allows all of the flavors come through bright and clear.

750 ml capped bottle served slightly chilled into a goblet. Bottled in 2012.
Bitches Brew is a very dark brown color, nearly black in the glass, with thin cappuccino head. It settles slowly and leaves some lace behind.
Aroma is immediately impressive before I even lift the glass. It has a great roasted malt and dark chocolate around but the honey seems to comes through as well with a slight sweetness.
Flavor is robust but balanced. Rich and roasty with just enough sweetness to balance out the strong roasted malt. Dark chocolate and coffee come through here too with just a hint of smoke.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied and carbonated just right. Balanced and drinkable for a double stout but still interesting with good depth of flavor.
This is a very good imperial stout. Is it worth the somewhat hefty price? Probably only once. Many other equally good stouts on the market. I will enjoy, this one as it was intended, while listening to the late great Miles Davis.

This beer looks fabulous---like a goblet of of overused motor oil just drained from a vehicle. Unlike motor oil though, there is a wonderful looking chocolately head and *some* carbonation.
The aroma is not intense, but a big inhale reveals some very nice notes. Chocolate, burnt malts. I am unsure what gesho root is, but that might explain the slightly pungent and surprising overtone.
That burnt malt quality seems the foundation for this brew. A warming glass increases the intensity of it, although it also makes it more mellow. Honey and cocoa notes are more prevalent with warming also. Alcohol is noticeably present and sharp.
The beer is a gritty on the tongue, typical of the style.
I think Sam chose a good style to commemorate the infamous Miles Davis album. It is close to what I would have expected one of Miles' bitches to brew, were she to cook a beer.

A-Pitch black. Zero light penetration. Head is a burnt tan color. Head leaves random lacing spots and ribbons.
S-Concentrated notes of cocoa, cola, buckwheat, java beans and honey. Also displays that 'Dogfish Head' band-aid aroma that I equate to most of their offerings. The gesho root lends a unique herbal stench. Has an astringent aspect to it. I am conflicted by the nose. Kinda like it, kinda don't.
T-In its purest from, this is a solid Stout. It has all the coffee you need, and it is bloated to the brim with chocolate. Bitter Dutch dark chocolate, and plenty of refined milk chocolate. Light tobacco notes. Flat cola. Also reminds me of a cup of dark roast coffee with a generous squirt of honey. The ghesho root delivers a dirty, earthen aspect. Tasty but perhaps a bit over ambitious.
M-Body is quasi-light. Not too hefty, but it still has enough body to pay homage to the style. Subtle, energetic carbonation. Easy gulping.
O/D-I honestly don't give a flying fuck about whether or not this beer can effectively equate to the music of Miles Davis. It's a good Stout that is probably a bit overpriced. The skeleton of the beer is strong and well-bult. One could argue that the addition of honey and um...gesho wasn't necessary. I finally tried it and about as good as advertised.

I did it. I drank it. I've been babying this beer since I got it. I didn't even put it in my cellar because I was scared it wouldn't age well. So, I kept in the refrigerator for nearly 2 years. Last night however, a good friend of mine looked me in the eye and announced that “it was time.” So we opened it. I'll be totally honest with you right now, I think I held on to the beer too long, even in the fridge. It was more bitter than I remember it being when it was fresh. I think the gesho root aged differently than I would expect hops to and it turned pretty bitter. The honey tones melted with and almost got lost in the oxidation process and yet it was still a winning beer in my book! The beer poured a big beautiful brown head and that wonderful aged red-fruit flavor you get from a well aged beer. If you have a 2011 release though, you might want to consider popping that baby open soon and shooting me a comment on how it tastes, I'd be very interested in hearing from anyone that has one.

A: Dark brownish black with a modest, bubbly tan head. Certainly looks like an imperial stout, though with a bit more of a head than most. No lacing whatsoever.
S: Dark fruit, chocolate, coffee. Sweet and very rich-smelling.
T/M: Chocolate, fruits, and coffee hit up front, really bold and flavorful. Underneath it all is just a touch of sticky sweet honey from the single thread of honey beer mixed in here.
O: A really fine beer. The "fusion" element is not quite as bold as expected - it mostly tastes like an imperial stout, though the honey does soften the harshness and bitterness of those beers, giving it more of a smooth, mellow character. Very nice.

Poured from a bottle into a Stone IRS Snifter.
A - Pitch black with a thick, billowing head of brownish tan head. The head reminds me of the kind of top you see on a root beer float made with chocolate ice cream. It's darker around the rim and fades to a dark mocha towards the middle. It hangs around for a bit, and then fades away over the first couple of minutes. Solid round-the-glass lacing.
S - Lots of deeply roasted grains, very little of the honey sweetness comes through here. Also hints of leather, cocoa, coffee and a slightly odd medicinal tint over the whole thing. I'm guessing that hint of what almost smells like crushed aspirin to me is coming from the Gesho root.
T - This is not your standard imperial stout. Gone is the cloying sweetness that you usually get with an elevated malt bill... in it's place is a big bitter monster driven by lots of deep roasty flavors and smoky backbone. The medicinal flavor hits towards the end, but it provides a nice bitterness to round out the whole flavor. Lots of cocoa, some smoke, and plenty of deeply roasted (almost burnt) malt flavors.
M - More of what I'd expect from a porter or a standard stout. Pretty thin on the mouth, with a bone-dry finish. It doesn't really stick around for as long as you'd expect a beer like this to.
O - Excellent beer. It's not quite like anything else out there on the market, and yet it's quite recognizable as what it is, a quality Imperial stout. It pushes the envelope of the style, but hits all of the hallmarks of the style. Truly an impressive accomplishment.

I fell for a couple bottles of bitches brew, just like all the other bitches I had a quick thing for. They all had their moments of glory, like the one that wanted to shoot a video after the rock concert, the one that showed you all the picks of the dudes the morning after, or the one that headbutted you in the dark alley. Temporary pleasures in a world where we are playing for keeps.
Example A(Bitches Brew):
A: Black as my mom's behind, with a caramel colored head.
S: Like the first time I opened up the VIP curtains at Wall To Wall Sex in San Fran. Roasted malt and cocoa. The girl at the club lit her tits on fire, so it was a similar ambiance.
T: Liquid smoke blended with a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato meets a licorice honey fondue.
M: Like a full C that you can swallow.
O: I wouldn't say no, but I wouldn't wait for it to come calling again.
Remember the girl with the pretty face, and the sweet perfume you fell for? Remember how she left you feeling empty inside? This is Bitches Brew.
