Notes:
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Thanks to my wonderful girlfriend for getting me this brew for Christmas. She also got me a DFH snifter, in which im sampling this beer.

Color: never seen anything like it. pours VERY dark brown, almost completely black. sits COMPLETELY black. i mean Mammoth Caves black. the thick, chocolate nouget head helps block out all light. ive never seen a beer without even a small dark brown rim. its not until the head has completely disappeared that a brown rim shows

Smell: smells like an imperial stout. solid roasted character with hints of chocolate. alcohol is also a major player here but its not solventy. subtle hints of dark fruit can be found under the blanket of roasted and chocolate malts. not getting any sweetness really. as the beer opens up i get a little of the red licorice sweetness common to some DFH beers whether its the muscovado sugar or Belgian candi sugar

Taste: very roasty. there is an almost astringent bitterness with roast and char in the finish, as well as some alcohol. after several minutes minutes of swirling and tasting and swirling and tasting, i get a little more dark fruit notes and realize that the carbonation adds greatly to the sharpness of the roasted and bitter character. never really get any honey sweetness or any kind of herbal flavor. the bitterness is just bitterness and wouldnt be able to tell if it was gesho or hops. i think at moments the T'ej wants to tell you its there, but its just a whisper.

Mouthfeel: definitely full bodied with a decent amount of carbonation

Notes: not as layered and complex as i was expecting. a fantastic stout, if thats all it was meant to be. ill be marking this down because i kind of resent the hype of a beer like this and paying (and when i say paying, i mean the girlfriend paying lol) for DFH to use "extreme" ingredients and patting themselves on the back for pushing boundaries when the elements of the T'ej could have just as easily been something else. the three "THREADS" of imperial stout overwhelm the African component too much. now, id be more than happy to take all i just said back in the case that i got a beer that was somehow affected by poor storage conditions and shipment, but based on this experience i just didnt drink anything fancy or unique and certainly not something worthy to symbolize the eclectic talents of the inspirational source.

though this beer came up short, this is the most thorough and detailed review ive done and the experience of getting to sample this limited brew, along with all the preparation and excitement surrounding this gift, has also made it the most fun review.

2012 vintage. Served in a snifter

Appearance: Pours jet black with 2 fingers of a dark tan, almost brown head. Body is completely opaque.

Smell: Roasted malt, cocoa, light smoke, toffee, molasses.

Taste: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, raisins, honey, earth, light caramel/toffee sweetness, and some slight smokiness. Finish and aftertaste is a nice balance of honey sweetness and roasted coffee bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, high/medium carbonation. Booze is hidden well.

Overall: One of my favorite offerings from Dogfish head. The base beer is solid and the addition of the honey beer really adds to it and helps set it apart from some of the other great imperial stouts out there. Definitely worth picking up a bottle.
