Notes:
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew -- a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads of imperial stout and one thread of honey beer with gesho root. It's a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.

Poured from a bottle into a Stone IRS Snifter.

A - Pitch black with a thick, billowing head of brownish tan head. The head reminds me of the kind of top you see on a root beer float made with chocolate ice cream. It's darker around the rim and fades to a dark mocha towards the middle. It hangs around for a bit, and then fades away over the first couple of minutes. Solid round-the-glass lacing.

S - Lots of deeply roasted grains, very little of the honey sweetness comes through here. Also hints of leather, cocoa, coffee and a slightly odd medicinal tint over the whole thing. I'm guessing that hint of what almost smells like crushed aspirin to me is coming from the Gesho root.

T - This is not your standard imperial stout. Gone is the cloying sweetness that you usually get with an elevated malt bill... in it's place is a big bitter monster driven by lots of deep roasty flavors and smoky backbone. The medicinal flavor hits towards the end, but it provides a nice bitterness to round out the whole flavor. Lots of cocoa, some smoke, and plenty of deeply roasted (almost burnt) malt flavors.

M - More of what I'd expect from a porter or a standard stout. Pretty thin on the mouth, with a bone-dry finish. It doesn't really stick around for as long as you'd expect a beer like this to.

O - Excellent beer. It's not quite like anything else out there on the market, and yet it's quite recognizable as what it is, a quality Imperial stout. It pushes the envelope of the style, but hits all of the hallmarks of the style. Truly an impressive accomplishment.
