The last pint I got to try at my first visit to the DPH pub. Great smoky aroma to this one. Taste is also smoky but very flavorful. Some great nuttiness and the fruits come through, and the roasted flavors make for a great, well-balanced beer. Not quite as good as the 75 Minute, but was the second best beer I tried and the uniqueness of this one makes it worth a try,

Pours a brown reddish orangish color with a one finger frothy head which gives way to some lacing. The aroma is of plantains up front with some brown sugar sweetness and a woddy smokiness. The taste has a woody smoky backbone with hints of caramel malt and brown sugar along with plantains, there is also a nice biting flavor of something, I have no idea what it is, can't figure it out. The mouthfeel is moderate carbonation. The drinkability is good, it is an easy drink, and with the complexity I want more to try to figure out the flavors.

Tap at dive bar in Worcester, MA.

Lighter creamy bubbly head over slightly hazy golden orange brown color.

Nose of brown sugar and sweetness like toasted brown sugar pecans. Lighter dark malts. Belgian malts and dark german wheats.

Taste is sweet some fruits, white riasin, plum, banana, brown sugar pecans toasty some belgian malts little syrupy sticky sweet little light hops and creamy. Some bready darker malts too. Finish is drier with lingering sweet brown sugars and pecans, and hint of smoke.

Mouth is medium bodied with good carbonation.

Drinkability is OK, nothin special. NO real alcohol but being 6% it shouldn't, and dries a bit on the finish, but leaves the mouth a little startchy feeling, kinda weird.

A-Clear brownish copper with a thin light tan head that transformed to a thin veil and left spotty lace.

S-Nothing outrageous here but pleasant nonetheless. Light malt sweetness up front with support from the pecan addition. Sublte touch of smoke in the background.

T-Light smokiness melds nicely with lightly sweet malt, pecan nuttiness and some brown sugar in the finish. While this all combines nicely into a "good" tasting beer it really did little to Wow! me.

M-Light bodied and a little disappointing. I think the thinness detracts from my ability to really "get into" this one. Feels weak on my palate.

D-Sessionable and certainly interesting but in the end it lets me down. I like the initial flavours but I quickly got bored with it. Nice effort but really not sure what they were aiming for with this brew.

I had the pleasure of pouring this beer for them on cask at NOTB and on tap during EBF. IMO the tap version was quite a bit better.

A: Fairly clear light brown color. Minimal head. I think there was actually more head on the cask version which is unusual. Just a touch of lacing for both versions.

S: The nose on the cask version was super tight. It wasn't bad but you could not pick out individual smells. The tap version was nice. A little bit of smoke. Very subtle. The pecan did come through nicely. Little big of malt but not that much all things considered.

T: The tap version has a nice smokiness that just was not there on the cask version.The pecan came through nicely but it was combined with the smokiness and that really worked well for me. The cask version was all pecan and really was not as complex. Both versions had a touch of spiciness to them.

M: This surprised me. Super light body. It really worked well for what they were going for with this beer.

D: I like what they did. A sessionable extreme beer. This would be a nice daily drinker. Nothing too crazy but with enough flavor to keep you comming back for more. Would love to try the bottled version at some point. Pecan!

Had this on tap at the Extreme Beer Fest the other night and wrote down some notes as I enjoyed a few samples.

The color is an amber/gold with some slight head that is more less a finger and leaves some laving on the glass.

The smell is malty with a burnt flavor and a bit of cashew and other nuts.

The taste is again some sweet malts and a pecan flavor. It was somewhat sweet as well.

The feel was great, the little samples I had. The beer was easy drinking and really did not give you a overload of malt that I do not like.

A - Pours a clear cinnamon color with a one pinky head and mild carbonation.

S - Buttery, pecans, oak, candied caramel malt, maple syrup.

T - Plantains, pecans, brown sugar, oak, candied caramel malt, light maple syrup, earthy, balanced, , mild pine bitter finish.

M - thick, full bodied, sticky, velvety, gentle, and smooth.

O - very, very good, glad I cellared this bottle.

A= Nice dark amber in color, nice head that left some soapy lacing.

S= To me the nose was rather faint, I really smelled the smoke, some nuts in it, and some carmel malts.

T= Nice taste get a little bit of a nutty taste the plantains come out a little and you get a nice smoke taste to it.

M= Medium bodied nice amount of carbonation.

D= Very nice drink really like DFH because they are always trying new stuff overall this beer was pretty good.

A: Meh - simple leathery brown hue. A decent pour yields a dissapointing .75 finger head and minimal lacing.

S: Smoke. A bit nutty too. Hints of toffee and malt peek through here and there.

T: Just too much liquid smoke for me. All the delicate nuances of what a Brown Ale should be are decimated by SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE!!!! Come on gents, it's called balance. Where are the plantains and the nuttiness from the pecans? It's called "Wrath of Pecant" for God's sake. All I get is smoke and mirrors (see what I did there?)

M: Oddly oily. A bit undercarbed and thin.

O: DFH's Wrath of Pecant was one of the more dissapointing beers at the tasting. There's a total lack of balance here, and for someone who doesn't like smoked beers (but knows a good one when he tastes it), this was hard to get down.

If you're gonna do a smoke/rauchbier, please cut down on that hedache-inducing liquid smoke essence, and find a more complex and flavor enhancing smoky profile.

Brown pour with hints of yellow and a white head that laces nicely. The oak barrels leave a very nice smell on this. Smokey and malty. Pecan barrels? It shows. The smokiness really takes the taste over. Hints of molasses, malts, caramel, but very smoky. Medium body, although you'd expect it to be lighter. A bit boozey on the backend This was tasty. It wasn't phenomenally good, but interesting nonetheless.

750ml bottle shared at a recent tasting. It poured a deep orange amber color with a thin white head clinging to the edges of the glass. Very cool color, the head disappeared rather quickly though.

In the aroma I get a little bit of smoke mixing with some sweeter notes of dark fruits and cherry flavors. Some malty, brown sugar like characteristics come out as well. Pretty nice aroma overall.

The taste shows more of the malty sweet flavors up front with some dark fruit and brown sugar notes to it. In the finish the smoke really starts to come out and gives it a very nice smoky dry finish.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thinner side with carbonation being about average. Overall I thought it was a very solid beer. I especially liked the smoky finish to it. Very interesting and tasty beer overall.

25.4oz bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip glass.

A - Pours a dark amber-brown with a huge light tan head. Great retention and lacing.

S - Dark fruit, plums, brown sugar, ripe bananas.

T - Brown sugar, over-ripe dark fruit, spices.

D - Tons of carbonation, average body.

O - Unique, but I did not love it.

I didn't taste any pecan as I recall. This review is probably a wash though as I didn't take notes and it was my 9th or 10th big sample.

But I do remember it being nice and smooth. Rich malty carmel taste. I wish I had anothe bottle thats for sure. Good stuff. Thanks Goes out to Jeff D (@emelius)

ark brown in color with a rich look to it. Some light hints of a reddish note poking through on the sides and the bottom of the glass. Nice touches of fine off white head forming on the top, nothing extreme though, maybe a half an inch or so. This faded down gracefully and left behind just a touch of lace on the edges of the glass.

The aroma was very nice and quite sweet as well. Rich notes of caramel, nuts, and a hint of brown sugar all playing very nicely. As it warmed up some hints of an earthy hop note started to take shape, as well as a nice underlying layer of grain. The flavor was just really top notch here. Rich and vibrant and amazingly complex. Starting with a wave of smooth caramel malts, evolving with an earthy hop tone that offered a nice balance to the sweet notes that had started it all. This was mellow and super smooth. Easing back down the original path, a nice touch of pecan then rolled across the tongue, mellowing out the finish and providing that last gasp of sweetness before the flavor finished out.

Big thanks to Jazzhead74 for sharing this one at the Hill Farmstead Saison event last weekend.

Appearance: Pours a red tinged brown that is fairly transparent. Head is small, white, shows minimal retention, and minimal lace.

Smell: Faintly toasted pecans, toffee notes, and a dash of sweetness (lightly caramel coated banana).

Taste: Same as nose.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium bodied and a touch undercarbonated at this point.

Drinkability: Would be higher if the mouthfeel was better.

Big thanks to Matt (mdaschaf) for sending this bottle to me in our first trade. Reviewing from notes, opened on St. Patrick's Day this year. 750 ml bottle, split with Nick on camera and poured into two globe glasses.

A: Semi-hazy medium brown colored body with a slightly off-white head. The retention was pretty nice, leaving a thin film as well as minor splotches of lacing around the glass.

S: Smoked pecans, oak wood, general nuttiness from the pecans and perhaps some carob chips coming through as well. It's very toasted and earthy in nature and does have a certain sweetness to it like sugar-coated nuts. Very diverse, unique and interesting for what could have been a standard brown ale.

T: Initially, roasted wood and some caramel malts come through, followed soon by a slight floral element. The pecans really come through in the finish and as this beer sits and your palate lets everything soak in, the pecans are the dominate flavor. A linger of yam and even the carob comes back for a second.

M: A bit thinner than I expected on the palate, well carbonated although it feels like it still has a medium body -- nothing of a really light bodied nature.

I really did enjoy this beer and wish it was made on a more frequent basis. By no means do I drink brown ales regularly, in fact I almost always pass over them. However, the addition of the pecans and carobs give this an entirely new dimension that is really just well executed. Albeit a bit saddened, this is one Brown Ale I am extremely happy I was able to try. Thanks again Matt!

Thanks a ton to bobbypaulson over on RB for the hook up! 750ml dated 2010. Poured at 60ish degrees into a DFH signature glass.

A - Very nice brown body with a lasting off white head and some nice lacing.

S - Lots of smokey flavors. Toffee, caramel, and just a hint of sweet earthy bananas. The smell is very savory.

T - Huge wave of smoke and sweet malts. I've eaten plantains before and I get that sense, although its basically just a glorified banana. Carob...I looked it up and Wikipedia said it could be used as a chocolate substitute and is slightly sweet. There is a hint of cocoa nib sweetness which I guess is that carob. Quite tasty. The mouth feel is well carbonated, but still meaty enough for the big savory flavors.

O - I'm not a big fan of smoked beers, which this beer is essentially. It does have the nice smooth nuttiness of a brown ale though. Thankfully the smoke is fairly mellow and blends quite nicely with the other flavors. This is a great collaboration, and it has held up well with age. Its also a bit refreshing to see a DFH beer that doesn't have a crazy high abv and taste like syrup (even though that's part of why I love them so much...)

Grabbed a bottle of Wrath during the 2011 Weekend of Compelling Ales at DFH and finally got around to giving it a shot.

Poured a medium brown color with very little white head that disapered quickly. Smells include toffee, banana, and malt. Maybe even a hint of chocolate. Tasted very malty and earthy- I don't know what plantains taste like but I have a feeling that I tasted some in the banana bread-ish highlights. There's some nutty roastiness in there as well. Mouthfeel was watery and there was some carbonation but nothing crazy.

Overall, there were a lot of characteristics you would expect from a brown ale, but the flavor was much more complex and it didn't have the bitterness that you find sometimes, and it deftinitely wasn't flat. I enjoyed it- too bad it's not more readily available or I'd be drinking it with some frequency.

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a finger of off white head that goes away almost completely.

Smell: Mildly smokey with a caramel malt sweetness and some fruity notes.

Taste: There is some bready malt, this beer isn't too sweet at all. There is some smoke, which I really enjoyed. I can just pick up the plantains a little bit. The finish is bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with very mild carbonation. The finish is dry.

Overall: I really liked the mild smoke, that together with the bitter finish made the beer. I think this one benefited from a bit of age. A nice offering and I'm glad I got to try it again.

Had this baby to celebrate last nite at home! Pours a nice amber/brownish color, very thin though, little bit of lacing on the side of my dogfish snifter. Smell was wonderful, got the carib and the hint of pecan smoked wood, couldn't really figure out the plantain smell, wasn't there in my opinion. Taste was where its at! Lovely going down, nice subtle melding of flavors, actually glad this wasn't a really strong 10% beer, sometimes subtle flavors need to shine. Was going to save some of this for my roomate, but after drinking half of the bottle in 5 minutes, there was no chance of that happening! Glad i got another bottle chilling in the "cellar" aka the big plastic covered bin in my closet!

Appearance -- Pours a garnet hue with a slim sudsy beige head. A bit ho-hum, but not bad.

Smell -- Carob and plantain sweetness is in the forefront, along with cocoa, toasted malt, and woodsmoke. Nice interplay with the plantain sweetness and the smoke.

Tatse -- The pecan wood smoke is much more evident in the taste, but as the smokiness begins to ebb on the palate, the chocolatey carob and plantain sweetness begin to pronounce themselves more, along with toasted malt sweetness and a bit of dark fruit character.

Mouthfeel -- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. It feels pretty good. Very drinkable.

Overall -- I like it. The carob and plantain really evevate this from a potentially ho-hum smoked beer to an interesting interpretation of the style. A year later and this is still drinking really well!

Was very excited to try this beer last year at the brewpub. Ordered a bottle and gave it a pour. The color was a light orangey brown with a fizzy white head. There isn't much lacing here. The smell of the beer is a bit nutty and slightly floral. The taste is kind of on the sweet side some brown sugar perhaps, some nuttiness in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is highly carbonated and light bodied. Overall it was a decent brew but nothing too impressive.

Thanks to syscrusher for the trade and aging this wherever he did for the last year plus.
Aromas of sweet butterscotch and caramel maltiness. As it warms you also get some slight toasted nuttiness and a more pronounced brown sugar aroma. I get no smoke or wood at all but that is understandable considering this beer was brewed over a year ago I believe.
The taste follows the nose but is much more subdued than I expected. I get a lot of sweet burnt caramel and butterscotch again. Not much in the way of nuttiness. There is a slight roasted character in the finish, but very slight; kinda like roasted peanuts (or in this case I guess Pecans). Once again there is no wood or smoked malt flavors (thank you aging).
The mouthfeel is medium with medium to low carbonation (typical Dogfish carbonation for those of you familiar with the brewers' other offerings). Overall I thought this beer was good but I believe would have been better several months ago with more complex flavors; still good none-the-less.

First had: bottle from Pinocchio's beer garden, Media, PA

Very tasty! Poured thick, reddish-brown with a healthy off-white head. Pungent aroma; malts, caramel, wood, nuts, some sugar and light fruit. All those characteristics carried over into the taste, with a toasty quality, and slight banana bread flavors coming through later on. Medium-light mouthfeel, pretty smooth and nutty, and moderately drinkable. Tasted better after it breathed for a while.

Very nice and clean bronze color. Great nutty and sweet caramel aroma. Nice hop bite right upfront then it melds into a caramel like sweetness with a faint hint of bready/nutty character. Mild spicy notes. Could almost be complex though in a subtle way if that explains it-a nice balance between all that is going on. Finish melds slowly into a faint dryness. Nice mouthfeel-has a touch of sticky sweetness. Really a great beer. It has come a long way in the year since it's release. I was not overly impressed upon it's release but it has really come into it's own. At the abv (bottle says 6.3%) I would not wait much longer. Still very, very well done.
