A witbier bursting with good karma. Made with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander, this Belgian-style white beer is a great thirst quencher.

A - Poured out a cloudy, golden-yellow color with a one-finger, white head of bubbly foam. It left sporadic sheets of lace on the glass.
S - It smelled of lemon, orange rind, yeastiness, wheat and some caramel.
T - Strong lemon flavor with some spicy coriander. Good cracked wheat flavor with a touch of orange.
M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.
O - This is a pretty tasty witbier. However, I'd rather see it in a 12oz format.

Sampled on April 7, 2012 at the Keene, NH Beerfest. The pour was pale yellow to olive in tone with a fizzy white head and a generally cloudy appearance. The aroma features an array of sensations including citrus, grainy malts, yeast, and something not unlike wheat. The body is about medium and fairly typical for the style. The taste had a slightly more bready flavor along with malts, pepper, and a dry finish. This one costs a few bucks so I am glad I got to try it at a brewfest.

DogFish Head Namaste Witbier, 22oz. bomber: Witbiers have been one of my favorites ever since I had a Hoggarten on the Grand Place in Brussels. Aside from the ubiquitous Coors Blue Moon, you do not see many brewers pursuing this fine style of beer. DogFish Head has a good reputation, so, despite the ugly label, I picked up this bomber to see what DogFish Head could do. The thin pure white head sits atop a cloudy straw colored body, and effuses an aroma of citrus. Good witbier flavor, which stays very light. No aftertaste. The Namaste is a good effort by DogFish Head, and worthy of a try. I drink wheats and whites during the summer, and often more than one per sitting, often with fresh (for zest) or aged (for sweetness) lemon. A “statement” white beer just does not fit into the economics, and it is often the lemon that is more key to the flavor than the underlying brew. So Blue Moon will remain the staple.

Gift from a friend. Thanks Nic!
Pours pale golden even straw coloured. Hazy with some big floaters... Nice classic witbier look. Thin white head disapearing too quickly. Carbonnation seems low.
N: Very very nice! Coriander dominates strongly, wet grass, faint lemon. Something sweet in the scent that I have trouble sorting out, peach?
M: Carbonation is surprisingly high. Fizzy on tongue. Bitterness is very low, almost absent or counter balance with the malt. Light bodied.
T: Matches the nose. Strong coriander taste upfront. spices as in a classic witbier. Lemon notes and wheat.
Overall: A good brew from DFH, but a little bit highly priced (10$/750ml). Highly drinkable. Perfect for summer days.

Dogfish Head
Namaste
Pours a pale white/straw color. A careful pour still yields a decent amount of sediment. Aromas of hay, citrus, grass and wheat are dominant. In the taste, much like a standard wit, wheat, lemon, twang of lemon grass, citrus, coriander and pepper. Very light. The mouthfeel is extrememly light bodied, thin, and watery. Overall, interesting and glad to try. Would say it would be great on a hot summer day, but I found it a bit too over spiced to be quenching, and too watery to hold the spices at bay. Average.

Poured from a 2011 bottle into a Dogfish Head signature glass.
A: Pours light amber with a very light head. Not much in terms of lacing. Lots of sediment floating around, giving a very cloudy appearance.
S: Light on smell, but matches well with the taste. Sweet, light orange hints with nice spice to accompany.
T: Classic witbier taste up front, followed by lemon and spices that work really well with this beer. Highly drinkable, great strong flavors for such a "light" beer. Perfect spring or summer flavor, but unique notes, in typical DFH fashion.
M: Drinks very light, with moderate carbonation that really brings out the lemon notes. Very good.
O: This is a really good witbier. I love the spice and lemon/orange balance - definitely a beer that I'll be getting again.

22 ounce bomber. It’s about 75 degrees and sunny outside, so to celebrate that spring has sprung I’m digging a rarity from Dogfish out of the back of the fridge. Namaste pours a hazy light gold, with a nice pillowy head that dissipates pretty quickly. Lots of little floaties remain in my glass. Not sure if that’s yeast, spice, or something else. Rustic is probably the best – and kindest - way to describe the appearance. Has the hallmark smell of a classic witbier, with notes of coriander and light citrusy orange peel the first things I pick up in the nose. I’m also getting a lemon character which I can only assume is the lemongrass. First taste is quite nice, as the beer has a certain thirst quenching impact, in that it hits the tongue and quickly washes to the sides of the mouth and down the throat almost too fast. Musky wheat malt holds up the structure of the beer from the onset, before it’s washed away by a cavalcade of spice and citrus. Yeast lends a slightly tart, almost sour note in a supporting role. The after finish is pleasant lemon pith. The beer finishes dry, with a hint of spicy carbonation, which leaves you wanting to go back to it and drink some more. Wits can often be heavy handed in the spice department, though that is not the case with Namaste, which arrives at a nearly perfect balance between the signature spices and the wheat and hops behind them. Kudos to the brewer, though the lengthy cellaring time may have had something to do with it as well. Despite the somewhat awkward appearance at the beginning, the beer is actually quite good, and certainly hits the spot on a warm spring day.

A- Pours a hazy yellow with nice 1-2 fingers white head that dissipates but leaves a thin layer at the top with decent lacing. There is quite a bit of unwanted particulates floating around in there.
S- The orange comes through and the coriander really comes through. It's a good scent; can't find much of the lemon at first but caught hints of it as it warms.
T- Like the nose it is dominated by coriander and some orange with a hint of lemon. Pretty straight forward and delicious.
M- Light body with mid to high carbonation. It's what you'd want in a wheat beer.
O- A very tasty sessionable beer with a good scent. Nothing much to complain about other than the particles that caught me off guard. At $8/22oz bottle I probably couldn't afford to drink this as a session beer but it's definitely good.

A - Cloudy white with a little bit of white head. Some thin lacing lingers on the side of the glass.
S - Virtually no smell, at least not of the aromatic ingredients (i.e. lemongrass, orange peel, coriander). The damp grain smell is certainly there but very faint.
T - Taste is very mild wheatiness. I looked really hard for the brew-with ingredients in the taste but I wasn't able to discern anything except for a very mild citrus taste.
M - I like the balance of the gravity and carbonation. High drinkability and refreshing.
O - I can describe this best as a disappointment. It's presented in the special 22 oz bottle and with decent packaging. The perceived concept ('something special') was certainly underwhelmed by utter absence of flavor.

S - Has the usual kind of spicy wet wood smell, but faint.
T - Tastes... pretty normal. Decent tang. A little more bitter than expected but in a not unpleasant way. The bottle says it's brewed with coriander, orange, and lemongrass, but it's pretty subtle. Just a hint of citrusy sweetness that bleeds into what I would call more like cardamom.
M - Starts soft and finishes crisp. Fresh and nice.
O - Well it's a refreshing wheat beer, perfect for a warm day. It's the basic characteristic taste you're looking for, so it makes the cut, but it isn't particularly notable. It was slightly more bitter than I'm used to. I can't tell if that was a welcome twist or a distraction, but I'm OK with it. Bombers are often ripoffs and this one is no exception. It's definitely not good enough to justify the $10 I paid. On a cost-per-ounce basis, a sixpack of this stuff would be over $28, which is triple what it's worth. FFFUUU bombers!

Using coriander in a witbier seems very risky seeing that witbier naturally have a skunky bite to them, adding a spice that has little subtly would make for a unique tasting but not a "good" drink. But the mellow undertones of all the flavors mold well. If this beer was any stronger or robust I do not think it would work. Great for food pairing..cheese, fruit, and vegetables.

Namaste pours a clear straw yellow with a small creamy white head on top. The foam dissolves quickly to a thick ring around the surface leaving behind a few spots of lace. Some sediment is held in suspension in the glass when the bottom of the bottle is poured.
The aroma has notes of lemon citrus, pale malt, coriander and yeast.
Each sip of this light to medium bodied beer is smooth, slightly creamy with a mild carbonated fizz. The flavor is spice blended with citrus and toast malt. It begins with lemon citrus and coriander. The spice is followed by toast, wheat and yeast. It finishes dry with lingering lemon citrus when gone.
This is a very tasty, well balanced easy drinking beer. It reminds me of a pilsner with spices added.

Pours hazy, almost turbid, pale yellow with a scant white head and no lacing.
The aroma is very subtle and would be undistinguishable unless in a neutral environment. There is light clove and coriander, even some honey, but all is just barely detectable.
The flavor is grainy with light coriander and a little muddy. Again, the flavors are all quite muted. The finish is rather messy.
Namaste has a medium to light body and is a bit chalky with no alcohol.
Easily consumable and thirst quenching. This is a fine beer for a muggy day.

Namaste - 2011 1083 from notes
A- Slight hazy golden straw pour, tiny chunks floating around in suspension. Three finger fluffy white head recedes to thin cap quickly. Lacing is awesome.
S- Lemon and oranges, yeast and typical wheat beers.
T- Lemon and oranges, earthy grass notes. Typical wit taste.
M- Medium to thin bodied, lively carbonation.
O- Nothing special, nothing wowing, just an alright beer, strange for dfh not adding their own flair to this.

Pours clouded lemon-drop yellow with a large white, foamy head.
The smell is of pepper, coriander, sugar-coated oranges and lemongrass. Spicy and tangy.
The taste is bright - orange tang with a coriander spicing.
The carbonation is lively, sprizty, and crisp.
A nice, fresh, witbier with an orange flavor (no need for an orange wedge - though that's not my thing anyway). A very nice example of the style, though pricey for what it is.

Poured into a snifter. Bottle says Bottled in 2011.
A- Pours a golden color with a 1/2 inch head that doesn't retain long before dropping to an 1/8 inch ring around the glass's edge. Super thin surface foam and nice streaks of lacing.
S- You can definitely smell the coriander along with a fume of alcohol and faint Belgian yeast.
T- Clean and light with notes of orange and mild spice. Especially easy to drink. Not much going on.
M- Snappy and bright as well as thin and borderline watery. Medium carbonation.
O- Not a bad tasting beer, just nothing special. Dogfish should stick to the extreme brews IMO.

A: Did they use champagne yeast for this one? Even though the bottle was cold and unshaken, the bubbles exploded into action as soon as the top was popped, just like a bottle of bubble, and I had to rush the bottle to the glass to catch the overflow.
In the glass, the beer is golden, but too cloudy to see anything through. Large bubbles rise upward rapidly, so fast that they do a little dance in their own turbulence. The head is a mountain of off-white meringue that lingers so long that I start to get impatient about drinking it. Some relatively large particles of sediment came out at the end of the pour.
S: Very bready at first whiff. Orange and spice meet my nose with the second sniff, and after that lemongrass and white pepper.
T: Very little sweet malts. Wheat bread flavor is heavy at first, but the coriander really dominates, especially in the middle. The finish is a mix of citrus and mild hops bitterness.
M: Initially feels moist, but the finish is astringent dryness that forces you back for another wet sip. Carbonation is above average.
O: Very typical of a Belgian white beer, really. It's a good beer, but I think you can do as well without spending $10 a bottle.

Dogfish Head Namaste, like all their other brews, comes to us with a little hype and a little catch. Dogfish has had some trouble supplying all the markets lately, so quantities are again pretty limited. Described on the website as a Belgian-style White, made with orange slices, lemongrass, and coriander, the Namaste is sure to be interesting.
The Namaste pours into my Duvel glass a light yellow/golden color, and very hazy. It's not completely opaque, but about as opaque as I've seen an American made White. The head is nice and thick, lots of carbonation makes for a soft, fluffy, one-inch foam.
Aromas fill my nose with light citrus notes, the lemon and orange is fairly evident. It doesn't smell nearly as full or spicy as I expected though. I'm not really getting any coriander, but there is a distinct yeasty layer to it. Overall the aromas are very soft, but definitely a bit interesting.
Once I take a sip, wow is that tasty! Very smooth and refreshing, yet complex and interesting at the same time. Just a tiny bit of hops shows through the light citrus wheat beer. Very creamy mouth feel, very subtle nuance of the yeasty citrus beer.
I think many of the American imitations in the Belgian White style fall short of greatness. Several brand names come to mind, eh-hem Blue Moon, that are just mediocre representations of really great styles. The Dogfish Head Namaste doesn't fall into that category. Refreshing and smooth, yet fairly full and complex. This is one of the best American imitations I've seen.

A: Pours a cloudy golden-orange color. A thick white head rapidly dissipates to very light lacing around the top of the glass.
S: The strong aromas from the lemongrass and coriander are present as soon as you open the bottle, as you pour and lift the glass to your mouth, the strong smell of yeast is met.
T: I get a nice "zesty citrus" flavor followed by a slight wheat aftertaste....not bitter at all.
M: Smooth, fairly dry with a very slight hint of sweetness.
O: a very nice summer brew. Would be great after a day of working in the yard are while enjoying a barbecue with friends....Not necessarily the best for a mid-winter beverage, but that is on me, not DFH. Overall, a nice offering

Poured from the bottle a hazy grey-apricot color with two fingers of off-white head.
Fruity aroma of orange peel, spice, honey, apricot and yeast.
The taste is citrusy with orange peel along with the coriander and white pepper adding a bit of spice. Finishes with lemongrass note and a hint of yeast.
Light-to-medium bodied and a touch dry with a moderate carbonation.

Not knowing anything about it other than it is yet another beer from Dogfish Head, I picked up a 750 ml bottle of Namaste to try from my local bottle shop. It sat untouched for quite some time, but now I regret not trying it sooner so that I can go and buy more (it is no longer available).
When I first poured it I was surprised not to see the all too typical dark-dark-dark, or at least very brown, beer I expect to see when I open something from DogFish Head, but this was a light and colorful pour that looked and smelled terrific.
All of the flavors they say are in there (orange slices, fresh cut lemongrass and coriander) are indeed there and in just the right amount for each. It was very good from first sip to last sip and overall loved the taste and want more!

Appearance: Very cloudy at first but settles nicely. Cloudy and bright yellow.
Smell: The aroma is bread like with citrus riding shotgun and herbal spice taking a backseat.
Taste: The citrus tones are there but balanced with sweetness and spice. The spice is more present in the aftertaste. Wheat is definitely present in the taste as well.
Mouthfeel: Light but a little heavier than other wits.
Overall: It is definitely not a traditional wit but this is what you would expect with Dogfish. It is a good beer just remember that you need to clear all preconceived notions out of you head before trying it.
