Dogfish Head Brewery visit their website
Delaware, United States

Style | ABV
American IPA |  7.00% ABV

Availability: Spring. bottle (1431), on-tap (137), growler (12), cask (2), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Aprihop is an American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Crystal malts. It's massively hopped -- in the continuous fashion, of course! -- and the flavor is complemented by the addition of apricots.

After fermentation, the beer is dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Amarillo hops. The beer has a hoppy aroma, with the apricots playing a supporting role.

The flavor is rich with late hop flavors, and its bitterness is tempered by just the right amount of malt sweetness and fruity undertones from the apricots.

Had this on-tap at the DFH Brewpub

A: A deep clear amber, but very little head by the time it came to my table

S: Smelled great! Citrus, piny hops with the sweet smell of apricots of course.

T: Tastes similar to their 60 minute but with a great sweetness throughout and a nice dry finish. Really balanced flavor, not too sweet but its definitely there. The reason I disliked Magic Hat #9 was because the sweet flavor seemed like it didn't belong, but here the flavors mingled perfectly for me.

M: Medium body and perfect carbonation

O: This is a great beer for this time of year. This may be one of my favorite seasonals from DFH next to the Punkin. Check this out and enjoy the Spring!

Basically, it's a sweet, fruity beer more than an IPA. The hops are present, but very mild and they fade away beyond the first few sips. All you're left with is sugar from the apricot, grapefruit, and apple notes.

It's a much milder beer than than the ABV suggests. I don't believe it's actually as high as the label suggests.

Really easy-going beer, certainly doesn't demand too much of your attention, nor does it challenge your pallet.

Had this on tap at the Mirabelle Tavern in Stony Brook. I started off on the right foot with Dogfish Head and have since developed a love/hate relationship with them. I thought I would give them another chance with this brew and glad that I did.

Great in all departments. The apricots are only present in the finish and give a pleasant aftertaste and do not make the brew sweet at all. Hops also help to cut those residual sugars to make it a balanced IPA with a little funk to it.

Great for the warmer days comin up. A definite summer time choice.

On-tap at Blind Tiger.

Beer is amber in colour with a soft white head. Good retention.

Smell strongly contains apricot- actually smells like apricot juice, quite sweet.

Taste contains apricot nectar- sticky and juicy. Hoppy, with a focus on the apricot again. Some grapefruit, but the apricot is really strong, drowns out the hops a bit.

Medium bodied and highly carbonated. Somewhat irritating.

Overall, the apricot really dominates this beer. It is a nice flavour but I could only take so much.

A - deep reddish amber color.

S - Clear hop notes, with citrus, pine, and of course apricots.

T - Sweet and fruity with a malt foundation, with pronounced hops up front. Dangerously drinkable for a 7% beer.

O - The apricots strangely work to make this ne of my favorite seasonal beers, and I do not normally like fruit beers.

On tap served in a snifter.

Appearance - Pours a deep amber, surprisingly. Small off white head. Gone in a flash. The faintest of foam remains with a pencil thin collar.

Smell - The description says apricots are a supporting flavor, but it's pretty dominant. Some hops and a lot of toasty malt.

Taste - Fruity apricot again, but maybe secondary to the hop. Instantly a strong toasted malt takes over. Like an amber ale. Bitter in the finish and the apricot comes back in the end with a funny, slightly acidic flavor.

Mouthfeel - Nothing like an IPA base, really. Hefty toasted malt bill. Bitter and medium bodied.

Overall - Enjoyable because of the apricots. The base IPA is not what I'm looking for, though.

Nice color. Full of hops, although I was expecting to taste mor apricots. Hops seems to overpower the taste. Slightly tart aftertaste. Would have like to have smelled more o the apricot in its aroma. Slightly imbalanced but not too much. A pretty good choice for a spring brew.

Poured copper with a frothy cream colored head. Nice lacing down the glass.

Big punch of apricot in the nose with some subdued hops in the back slightly citrus with some bitter herb.

Big apricot flavor up front, then the hop bitterness dances around the palate = very lively, nice carbonation. Goes back and forth with sweet and bitter, finishes dry with syrupy body that is both sweet and bitter.

Pours a mellow, golden brown with a two finger white head. Smells of pine, citrus and light stone fruits. Tastes like a standard IPA with light, mild sweetness. Very hop forward, with a nice malt backbone. Medium bodies with decent carbonation. Overall, a decent IPA with an interesting twist.

A - A dark amber color almost brown, with a nice finger of tan head at the top that leaves a bit of lacing as you drink.

S - Nice combination of grapefuit and apricots, a nice pleasant smell, with slight malts at the tail end.

T - Grapefruits are very present as are the apricots a nice well balanced taste, not to fruity not to bitter. A nice combination and presence of caramel and malts.

M - Medium bodied a bit of carbonation.

O - I liked this brew a lot very well balanced and I enjoyed the fruit infused into the IPA, WONDERFUL AND REFRESHING.

Two finger head with good retention on a clear nice amber body. Little lacing. Aroma is fairly hoppy with mostly orange peel. Apricot is tough to draw out. Flavor is fairly complex with a nice malt profile and mix of hops including musty, grapefruit and floral notes. Again the apricot is tough to draw out. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall a good beer but the apricot was well hidden from my senses.

i was skeptical of the aprihop. mixing fruit and ipa isn't my favorite concept, but dogfish is known for this style. aprihop turned out ok - very subtle hints of the apricot with a nice balance. poured a dark amber/orange color with an off white head that left considerable lacing. i noticed some fruitiness but it was well tempered by citrus and earthy hop qualities. down the hatch you do taste some stone fruit, but not in a sweet, cloying way. less apricot-like than magic hat no. 9. don't notice the 7% at all. i'd rather drink the 90 or 60 minute, but the aprihop is a worthy beverage for at least one pint.

A- Pours a nice, deep amber with a solid off-white head

S- Nice floral hop, strong but not overwhelming, perhaps a light sweetness as well

T- Floral hop on the palate first with the apricot fruitiness coming in soon after, a nice rich amber maltiness, moderate bitterness throughout, somewhat sweet and dry finish

M- Moderate carbonation that fades rapidly, very smooth and crisp

O- I found this pretty interesting, the apricot and floral hops play well together and the look is very inviting

Probably my favorite DFH seasonal brew. Have had on-tap and in bottles many times. Pours a dark, hazy amber color with a nice off-white head that leaves moderate lacing. Pretty looking beer. Has an aroma of citrus, honey, brown sugar, yeast, sweet malts and yes, apricot. Lovely complexity and balance that comes out even moreso in the taste. Sweet malts and bitter hops come together to form a delightful beer. The apricot flavor seems to vary each time I have it...though it is usually integrated very well.

Medium bodied and smooth. Moderate carbonation. Overall...is it Spring yet?

Tasted on tap at DFH Alehouse in Falls Church, VA.

A - Color is amber to red, in between 90 Min and Raison in the beer sampler colors. Off-white head lasts and gives strong lacing.

S - Emphasis on hops. Very similar to 60 Minute. A little amber specialty malt aroma in background, like Munich or Amber.

T - Strong citrus hops initially, blends into malt and sugar sweetness. A sudden, bitter note right at the end.

M - Moderate body, astringent, almost soapy hop bitterness. Alcohol not noticeable.

D - Drinks like a maltier-than-normal IPA. I don't get the apricots--they must be indistinguishable from the hops to me. A good beer, but not my favorite from DFH.

The brew pours a slightly ruddy orange-amber hue, and is capped by a filmy white wisp. The nose shows very little fruit, which is not a bad thing; it does not seem adulterated. The hop bouquet is instead tropically fruity with light cannabis notes atop a slightly sweet malt. The flavor reinforces the suggestions of the nose. Initial impressions are of light sugar cookie malt, fruity dank cannabis, and a slight spiciness, and it really doesn't show apricot until the very finish. The feel is light-bodied, refreshing and hides a fairly high ABV. Very good stuff, overall.

*Taken from notes have been catching up from week in Rohoboth DE week in Philly and a beer festival thrown in there amongst a 52 hour work week in between all very busy and hope to catch up soon only about 10 more entries to go but I digress.

A: On tap from Dogfish Head brewpub on April 10 and awsome color with beautiful head foamy and tan all sexy saying drink down and do me again.

S: Smell is of what you would guess fruity apricots and some citrus notes to go with a wonderful malt aroma in the back.

T: First is the malt with a quick slap of apricot and finishing with a slightly stinging citrus hop flavor.

M: Smooth and crisp good carbonation level with little lacing . Very refreshing taste and a sure sign spring has sprung and summer is on its way.

O: Not any real surprise with Sam and the brew crew at the wheel, a great beer from a great brewery.Definitly would drink again.

Cheers !

Had this beer on-tap served into a liter glass at a beer garden in Jersey City.

This beer should be call Hopricot, not aprihop.

The appearance was reddish in color with little to no head. Im not sure if the lack of head is due to the serving style.

The smell has a light hint of apricots and, in the classic dogfish head style, A LOT of hops.

The taste was much more hops than apricot. It was an IPA with a hint of apricot, not a apricot flavored beer with some hops.

The mouthfeel was pleasant.

Overall, this was an enjoyable beer. I'm not sure that I would get a whole liter of it again. But, it is enjoyable by the pint.

Served on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Lexington, KY as their rotating tap. Served in a pint glass, consumed on 16 May 2011. Review taken from notes and recent memory.

One word sums up this beer: Madness. On to the review.

Appearance: Very deep and hazy red/copper body, hard to see any carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. Topped by a frothy one-finger head of beige foam which sticks around for a while and leaves dangling lacing in its wake. Nice looking beer; its deeper color for an IPA makes me wonder what the nose and taste hold. (It kind of does resemble apricots, now that I think of it.)

Smell: Whoa. Ever had Magic Hat No. 9? It's like that, but better. As strange as it sounds, the nose is powerful, but also very dry. The apricot notes probably add to this dryness, and this enticing fruit aroma is backed steadily by citrusy hops (think grapefruit/oranges) and a substantial presence of sweet, sugary malts. The beer overall smells very earthy, and the apricot notes aren't so overpowering that it seems artificial (as the case with Magic Hat). Balanced insanity. I like it.

Taste: This definitely tastes like an IPA, and it's perfectly balanced with the apricot flavors. Front and center are some citrusy hops which bristle the tongue, followed by fresh apricots and just a hint of pine. The malt emerges in the finish in a very sugary and sweet - almost candy-like - type of way which blends with some of the bitterness from the hops. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this beer, but I was pleased at the balance and natural flavors from the fruit used.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation was kind of sharp at first, but as the beer warmed, it became more tame in its carbonation without being bland or watery. The brew is about medium body and goes down smoothly with the lingering flavors from fruit, and creates a pretty drying sensation in the finish, though the alcohol is well-hidden. Well-done.

Overall: I would expect nothing less than weirdness from this brewery, but this is a great beer. It would be too easy to dismiss it as merely a "fruit beer," but this definitely shows itself as an IPA with a big twist to it. Glad that I got to have this brew; its weirdness will hold a place in my heart.

On tap at the Queen Vic in Houston, TX

A: Pours a clear orange/dark red color. A two finger white head forms at first, and recedes in a second. Not much lace is left behind.
S: Plenty of hops up front. Light citrus. with some pine Mostly soapy and oily hops. Some sweetness as well.
T: Follows the nose. Citrus like hops up front. Though much more of a soapy and oily character that I am not a fan of. I can't tell if that is the hops or the fruit? Some sugary and grainy sweetness as well.
M/D: A medium body with that prevailing soapy/oily character. A bit thing and watery as well. Not hard to drink though. I finished the pint without a problem.

Pretty much average for me. Nothing really stands out besides the soapy/oily character. I can't say it is an IPA, and I can't say it is a fruit beer because nothing wants to stand out. Overall, decent. Nothing more or less.

Poured on tap at The Courthouse Bar and Grill in Putnam, CT.

Poured a beautiful, dark red/amber in color, with a very nice, off white 2 finger head. It stayed around for a while and left some beautiful lacing down the side of the glass.

Smell - The nose of this one is hidden in the cold, so it's best you let this one warm up a bit. Once it did, I noticed some woody, citrus, slight pine and a dash of fruit.

Taste - Hops hit you up front, right after comes the well balanced, full bodied malts. The apricots were noticeable enough to let you know that they are there, but they certainly do not overpower it. The malts keep it in check very well. I thought this was going to be very apricot forward but it's not, and that's ok.

Mouthfeel - medium, slick. The carbonation is there and it's not over the top, and it's not too little.

Overall - This is quickly becoming a favorite IPA. I didn't know what to expect but I'm glad that I had it today. I'll definitely be picking up more of this before it's gone for the season!

On tap at Mad Mex restaurant, Cranberry Twp, PA

Pours copper/amber colored with a medium sized white head.

Aromas of the hops, citrus, a touch of sweetness. Not picking up much along the lines of Apricots.

The taste is a nice balance with the hops and the sweetness. I mainly get the Hops, but the bitterness is very minimal. There is nice sweetness that balances it out - probably the Apricots, but I am still not getting very much of the Apricot taste.

Overall very enjoyable. Easy to drink and could have multiples in a sitting. Not bitter - not sweet - right in the middle.
