Berliner Weissbier |  4.50% ABV

Availability: Summer. bottle (1009), on-tap (129), growler (8), cask (1)

Notes:
In Festina Peche, since the natural peach sugars are eaten by the yeast, the fruit complexity is woven into both the aroma and the taste of the beer so there is no need to doctor it with woodruff or raspberry syrup. Just open and enjoy!

Served in a DFH Alehouse globe.

A: Poured a fairly translucent, bright yellow color with a bit of chill haze. No head to speak of, but lots of visible carbonation.

S: I got a tinge of tartness, but mostly fresh grains and peach tea.

T: Tart, funky, and fun. I found this to be thirst-quenchingly good with a very understated contribution by the peach. The sourness really didn't kick in until the late aftertaste.

M: Prickly and wet. No lacing whatsoever.

O: It's always a pleasure to drink this one. I'm a huge fan of this style and this entry doesn't disappoint

Pours hazy yellow with a fine white head of loose foam that fell quickly to a thin film. The occasional bubble was observed to be floating nonchalantly to the top. Nose is strong with brett, just a little peach, sour and floral. There's a spicy bite and a dry wheat malt base underneath. Musty. Taste is mild peach. Fruit is much fainter than I expected and I had to work pretty hard to find it on the nose and on the palate. It's light, tart and has a healthy earth. Acidic. Body is light and crisp. The wheat base is strong and refreshing and offers up some bread. Together with the restrained fruit character that bread was a nice compliment. No hop bitterness. A pale, mouthwatering and very dry finish.

This is an exuberant drink. It's not explosive in it's fruit character but it is clean and tart. The fruit did sweeten as the beer warmed but not to the measure of an IPA. The strong wheat based malt character gave enough bread to create a balance you could literally observe. I would call it a liberated taste.

From a 355 ml bottle into a globe glass.

A-The head fizzles immediately and leaves no lacing. There is a substantial amount of chunky, soda-pop-like carbonation visible in the glass. The beer is light, light golden in color with a touch of haze. Solid representation of the style.

S-The smell is mildly lactic and tart up front. As promised, there is a strong peach scent, but also some apricot. The whole thing is a little musty from the wheat.

T-I taste mildly sweet peach and apricot at first. The fruit then fades and a light, lactic tartness pulls gently at my glands on the finish. There is not much happening here, but the flavors are well-developed and pair nicely with each other.

M-The brew is light weight, with crisp, chunky carbonation that fades in strength towards the end of the glass.

O-This is a fairly simple, but decent-tasting summer beer. I could have used a little more Berliner Weiss tartness to offset the sweet peach flavor, but this brew is not syrupy or cloying. The light body and chunky carbonation make for easy drinkability and solid refreshment. Fruit beers aren't always my thing, but this is not a bad effort.

On tap at Jerry's Sandwiches in Wicker Park in Chicago, with a buddy yesterday 6/15/2013.

Aroma: Light sweet tartness up front, with a little bit of sweetness- a fruity peach. Smells great, smells crisp and refreshing. I can practically smell the CO2. (4)

Colour: Clear light gold body with a fluffy 3cm white head that dissipates quickly. It's like a white soda, you can see all the bubbles in the beer. It's very much what I expect from a Berliner Weiss. It just looks crisp and refreshing. Great lacing. (4)

Flavour: Tart apricot and peach sweetness. The tartness is not over the top, but it's no wilting flower either. Tastes delicious, not super complex but the flavours are very well represented and everything comes together well. I would like a little bit more tartness though. Overall well put together and is tasty. (4)

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, crisp and very, very well carbonated. Aftertaste is mostly a light peach sweetness and a decent bit of tartness that is very pleasant. (4)

Overall: A very nice, tasty Berliner Weiss. I don't even like peach but this is delicious and not off-putting at all. The peach sweetness is mild but delicious, and the tartness complements it very well despite peach not being a typically tart fruit. I'd drink it again, especially this summer! (4)
