A: Pours a hazy dark reddish brown in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some garnet red highlights. The beer has a minimal amount of light beige head that quickly reduces to a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark fruits (raisins, prunes, and plums) and candi sugar.

T: Overall this beer is pretty sweet, with moderate to strong flavors of dark fruit malt sweetness with raisin, prune, and plum all making a strong presence. There is a strong presence of candi sugar as well which contributes to the overall sweetness.

M: Full bodied with light amounts of carbonation. Syrupy with light amounts of alcohol warming.

O: It is a shame that DFH stopped making this beer and continues to make the Raison D'Etre (the watered down version of this beer) - I would love to see DFH pull this one out once every 3-5 years as it is so much better. Nice amounts of complexity but it is not the easiest beer to drink as the alcohol is not as well hidden as would appeal to the masses.

A - Brilliant clarity and color, Raison D'Extra has a sexy Merlot-hued dark mahogany color. Almost no head forms and the loose, effervescent tan bubbles that do are driven off by alcohol almost immediately. Legs-city!

S - Heavy boozy, solvent alcohol does a good job of burning the nostrils right off the bat. Belgian yeast undertones flourish timidly white fruity raisin and prune billow fourth. Subtle nuances are largely overrun by burning alcohol heat.

T - Surprisingly, shocking even, Raison D'Extra is much more mellow in flavor than aroma. Sweet raisin and bold caramel malt step it up and keep the hops and alcohol flavors at bay. Subtle Belgian nuances play with earth hints and light clay in the background.

M - Smooth and soft, almost all traces of carbonation have been fended off by the incredibly warm alcohol. Warm and solventy in feel but not burning at all, it's warm in the stomach and retronasally.

O - Holy crap is this a huge brew. Thankfully the extremely boozy aroma didn't make it through the to the flavor allowing tons of nuances hidden behind layers of malt to arise. This is quite and enjoyable beer but it'll take a while to finish.

12 ounce bottle which reads "Bottled on 9/29/06". Purchased circa late 2011, consumed and reviewed on 12/29/12. Six years and three months old.

Poured into a small Samiclaus glass tulip of sorts.

A- Dark amber brownish in color. Thin almost non existent head.

S- Raisins soaked in alcohol, maple syrup and molasses.

T- Wow this stuff is sweet. Candied sugar, raisins, molasses, maple sugar and a little alcohol. Slight bitter after taste.

M- Super thin with virtually no carbonation. Numbs the lips a little, lingering bitterness throughout. Touch of booze burn lingers a bit as well.

O- Wasn't great, probably aged a bit too long. Very easy to drink though, be careful.

To the amazement of the tasting group we actually opened this five years to the day after it was bottled, but didn't even realize it until the tasting was over and we checked out the bottle date. Talk about coincidence.

A: Pours a deep mahogany red color, really beautiful; no head, no lacing

S: Deep, sweet malts, booze-soaked raisins, lots of dark fruits

T: Booze-soaked raisins, toffee, caramel, sweet bready malts, oaky/woodiness, finishes with a slight boozy warmth

M: Medium viscosity, oily texture, no carbonation, only slightly boozy

O: This beer far exceeded my expectations. The booze is amazingly well hidden and the flavor profile is fantastic. Five years has allowed this beer to mellow out and the flavors to really come through and shine. Will DEFINITELY seek out more of these.

A: The color of a barleywine (actually maybe a little darker--like coffee strained with too few beans so a tan color shows around the sides) with almost the tepidity of a bourbon. Poured with a light ring of khaki head that went away quickly. Now there is literally no head even with an aggressive swirl of the glass (tulip). A few bubbles rising.

S: Licorice and bigtime raisin up front. Barley, malts, and vanilla in there. Mostly raisin.

T: Mouth full of raisin and booze. It almost tastes like a raisin wine aged in a bourbon barrel. Interesting. Doesn't taste like a beer, but it's good. Unique. Off-centered as the DFH people say :)

M: Full, few bubbles, actually less boozey than it should feel for 18%. Watch out for this one!

This beer has been aged for several years - I poured it into a DFH bulb glass. Beautiful color - a deep velvet brown with slight amber hues. Decent head at pour that dissipated very quickly to almost non-existent. The aroma is heavy raison and alcohol - smells like a fine port wine. Taste is luscious - again heavy raison, prune, brown sugar sweetness, and alcohol heat on the back end. Despite the lack of head/lacing left, there is still a fizzy carbonation tingle in the mouth. A perfect brew for a fall day.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/29/2006(almost 6 years old). Pours extremely hazy dark reddish brown color with a small foamy khaki head with poor retention, that reduces to a small patch of foam. Minimal wisps of lacing on the glass. Aromas of huge raisin, caramel, molasses, toffee, prune, tobacco, earth, toast, roast, and yeast spices. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance. No booze to speak of as well. Taste of big raisin, prune, molasses, caramel, toffee, toast, tobacco, roast, earth, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, toffee, caramel, tobacco, toast, roast, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor complexity and balance; with zero cloying sweetness on the finish. Also slightly dry surprisingly. Light carbonation and full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and thick mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is insanely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong ale! Huge complexity and balance of flavors; and surprisingly smooth to sip on slowly for an 18% beer. Highly enjoyable stuff.

Pours a cloudy dark amber that looks to be flat. No head to speak of. Nose of brown sugar, raisins, plums, red grapes, and cherries. Some caramel malt in there and definitely a fair amount of alcohol. Hints of spice and just a really nice caramelization to it. The taste is certainly a bit cloying. Intense sugar and caramel flavors, overripe dark fruits, tons of raisin, grape, and plum. Moderate alcohol flavor and head. I loved the aroma of this, but it's just too much to drink.

Poured into a DFH Signature glass on 7/4/12

Pours a medium-light mahogany and settles with a crimson sheen with a rusty twinge. There is a flash of bubbles while the beer is poured that simply doesn't last. Very thin collar retention disappears, too. No lace.

Toasted sugars weigh heavily the aroma - brown sugar and molasses, raisins, sweet baked bread. Overtones of fig and plum intersect with a noticeable booziness. For an overly sweet aroma, this doesn't smell too bad.

Whew, this is a strong critter. I'd go as far as to call it daunting. Sugars and alcohol mix with a light toastiness and some oxidation tones (which don't seem entirely out of place). Some bread tones drift about, offering a dry notion at times, but this is predominantly sugar, raisin and booze.

The feel isn't the most robust or full, but it sure is heavy and quite slick with all the alcohol. Carbonation is on the lower side, but it does give the beer some movement.

As the beer warms, it starts to show some signs of it's age - slightly thin edges in terms of feel and some more appreciable oxidation.

As far as over the top, sugary DFH beers go, this makes for a fairly decent sipper.

12oz bottle shared this weekend between my brother and I and a complete stranger.

A- Crystal clear dark amber pour, hints of brown and red. Zero head, zero lacing. Looks bourbon like.

S- Huge wallop of raisins and brown sugar and vanilla. Exceptionally sweet. No hint of the alcohol in this one.

T- Sweet candy coated raisins, brown sugar, plums, dates and figs. Vanilla and a touch of maple.

M- Medium bodied, very coating on the tongue, almost syrup like.

O- This was something that I had never expected to try in my life. The guy sharing with us is the true meaning of a BA (even though he's on ratebeer) This was truly magical, for something so good to be over 5 years old is just remarkable.

Big beer #2 to celebrate the completion of my first year of teaching! Thanks Heatwave33, even my iTunes has cranked the apropriate tunes! I cant read the bottle date, well at least the year has faded.

Super muddy body. Initial head was around a half inch from an aggressive pour into a snifter. Right now a murky brown body with a tiny ring of head clinging to the glass just ominously sits theres, waiting for me to indulge.

It smells like a double Raison d'Etre, honestly, except the yeast comes out to play this time. Theres loads of raisins and dried fruit prominently displayed, but theres a bit of Belgian yeast that wants to come out.

The raisins definitely want to dominat (and their sweetness and body do), but the taste is surprisingly balanced. I get a strong sense of raisins, but also the chewy malt balances things out. its got the super high alcohol flavors from WWS and 120 Min, but I like how the raisins work with it.

Theres definitely a lot going on, but it works. The aftertaste feels boozy and warm. I like this the most out of the big beer series from DFH. too bad its retired....

Appearance: Pours out a modestly hazed, deep amber-hued body with a very, very thin, near white head.

Smell: This one smells of liberally spiced, fruity-scented raisin puree, bready malts, dark brown sugar, and some nostril-stinging, eye-watering alcohol.

Taste: Distinctly sweet, sugary upfront with an expected follow-through of the fruity raisiny taste, brown sugar, and bready malts yielding some toastiness. But, very soon, that altogether piercing alcohol creeps in, searing the tongue and throat and warming your innards on the way down. Trivial oxidative notes in the background. Sweet breadiness, raisins, and straight-up moonshine on the flat, hot finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Lightly carbonated.

Overall: There's not much going on beyond sugar, raisins, and plenty of alcohol heat. I'm totally fine with this one being put out to pasture.

Got this little blessing as an extra in a trade. Thanks to cartoonshop!!

Poured a beautiful, rich burnt molasses color, but what hint at a head started quickly dissipated.

Aroma: Wow, molasses, raisin a hint of...maybe caramel. Nice!

At this point the wife sniffed, and sampled, while I got on BA to check the ABV--wasn't on the bottle. How can that be? Anyway, she told me that it wasn't harsh, but she thought it might be on the higher side. Then I found out it comes in at 18%.

Taste: Wow! Smooth, raisin comes through after the initial molasses front. A bit of prune. Finishes smooth, sweet and no burn. However, every once in a while you get a hint of warming, but just a reminder to respect this concoction.

Quite nice. What a great surprise as an extra. Thanks Andrew.

A - Pours a very cloudy brown-orange color with a thin layer of frothy off-white head. The head fades down very quickly leaving behind very little lace.

S - Aroma is full of lots of sweet raisin and dark fruit, with some strong cinnamon and Belgian yeast spices, residual sugar, caramel, a bit of vanilla, and a decent amount of booze.

T - Starts off with lots of sweet rich raisins and other dark fruits with some cinnamon and other Belgian yeast spices and some caramel. Through the middle, more brown sugar sweetness comes through with some vanilla and some booze. The finish is a mix of full of sweet raisin, some Belgian yeast spices, vanilla, and a good amount of booze.

M - Full bodied with mild carbonation. Feels smooth and thick with a warming and sweet finish.

D - Pretty drinkable. Really big beer with lots of sweet flavors and some strong booze. Given its strength, it is still well balanced and fairly drinkable.

pours very dark mahogany / chestnut with no head. good amount of sediment.

aroma is sweet, boozy, and malty with a strong raisin presence.
taste is surprisingly sweet: malty; raisins; molasses. the booze follows, but not as strongly as you'd think considering the ABV. still, this one is a heavy hitter.

thick, syrupy mouthfeel.

the definition of a sipper. not one i'd want on a regular basis but would have again. raisin d'etre on steroids, i prefer the regular version.

Found this bottle hanging out in a shop in Indianapolis. Bottled in 2007.

A: It looks like dirty toilet water. Muddy brown, and not in a good way. Minimal head. Faint lacing. Thick chunks of sediment floating all over this one.

S: Heck of a turnaround. This has quite a pleasing nose, almost like a barleywine. Lots of raisin, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and dark fruit. A little bit of ripe cherry and brown sugar.

T: Drinks like a carefully aged American Barleywine. Obviously a raisin bomb, but also lots of ripe fruit, brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, burnt toffee, and booze. Good amount of heat on this, seriously burns the tongue. Quite good.

M: Alcohol heat is just a little too aggressive. Full bodied and moderate carbonation. Flavors are well balanced and interesting.

O: Surprisingly good after the hugely disappointing appearance. I'm shocked at how well this has held up and how hot it still is. Definitely a raisin bomb, but it's balanced with lots of other interesting flavors. In the end, I didn't want more than 5 or 6 ozs. of this, but I still appreciate it as a solid brew.

'07 bottle.

Poured into 10.75oz Allagash tulip. Brown Mahogany body with good/quickly dissipating head. I can smell the beer upon opening the bottle.

Mega-raisin bomb in taste and smell. Nice, big full body with some booze weaved in nicely. I can't imagine what this tasted like fresh. Maybe one day.

12 oz bottle courtesy of brees6221 in the 'hotter than hot' BIF. 2007 vintage pours a limpid copper color with minimal head and lacing. Am I too drunk to take care of this beast? Maybe.

Nose is innocent enough...very sweet...toffee of course, raisins too. Fruity and alcoholic, but not as much as one would think. I like it...in a sick twisted way.

Taste is raisins soaked in grain alcohol with a few touches of burnt bread and peanut brittle held up to an open flame. Mmmm, I like it. I really, really wish I had more of this. For me, DFH is 2 for 3 on the huge beers...loved WWS and this, but did not like 120 min at all. Too bad none of these have been seen in Tx for quite some time. Brew some more of this, dammit!

A-Glowing ruby, brighter than Raison D'etre

S-Alcohol and dry fruit. Not sure how 5 years affected the harshness of the %ABV.

T-Tart, almost sour grapes. The alcohol you get tastes a bit like whiskey.

M-Between the sweetness, booze, and tart fruit: I am flummoxed. I guess that's kind of the point of this beer.

I dig most of the goofy things DFH does so it works for me. If you don't like Raison D'etre, Red and White, or Sahtee: save your money and skip this one.

A: Deep mahogany orange-brown, very light yellowish head that quickly dissipates, surprisingly very active internal carbonation

S: Sweet, dried fruits, dates, hints of caramel and toffee, some alcohol is present as well but not as much as one might think

T: Similar to the nose, heavy dried fruit, some caramel, the alcohol works well to balance out the sweetness but still a bit heavy in both regards in my opinion

M: Incredibly smooth, nice viscosity, alcohol is heavy but not lingering or overpowering, coffee-like aftertaste, consistent throughout

O: A great all-around high abv, the age has certainly mellowed it out some, rich and delicious

8/30/2005 vintage. This was the first "extreme" beer I tried about two years ago and I loved it. Finally getting around to reviewing one of the last few bottles I own. Poured into a brandy snifter at cellar temperature.

A - A semi-aggressive pour yielded some small edging of off-white bubbles. The body is a clear light red/burnt orange color. The snifter I'm using has a laser etched base and oddly enough bubbles are rising from the bottom. Swirling produces some very small bubbles and a whole lot of alcohol legs. Sits in the glass like a hard liquor. A bit of sediment towards the end of the bottle.

S - The nose starts off with some very sweet candied plums and leads into burnt malt and a touch of brown sugar. The aroma is very sweet and pungent, almost brandy like making the raisins come off as a sweeter fruit. The alcohol hits hard and burns the nose. It smells like this is a concentrated plum syrup.

T - Its a simple flavor profile. This is the fourth bottle of d'extra I've tried so maybe I'm just desensitized or something. Saying that an 18% abv raisin beer is "simple" seems a bit ridiculous. But its really just not that complex or intricate. Candied plum sweetness, a bit of earthier raisin flavor and toffee malt, and a touch of oxidation to round things out. That is about it. The alcohol doesn't even make an appearance until late in the game by warming up the throat slightly. The sweetness is really what prevents this from being drinkable, not the absurd abv. I've had beers with a third of the alcohol come off harsher.

M - Its has a pretty thin body with minimal carbonation. Pretty sticky and slick though. I wouldn't have it any other way. Its perfect for a beer of this nature.

O - I'm rating this beer so high for a few reasons. For one, its held up perfectly after nearly 7 years. There is the slightest touch of oxidation, but it compliments the flavor profile much like an aged barley wine. The second reason, is because its just a damn delicious beer. Its like drinking a sweet plum brandy with some malty undertones. Just wonderful stuff. I really hope that DFH brews this again as I would love to try one of these fresh.

Bottle was from 2007. Poured into a double shot glass and enjoyed by sipping throughout the night.

The body of this unbelievably powerful ale has a terrific maroon tone to it, with absolutely no foamy head to show.

The smell is an incredible combination of heavy fruits, nutmeg, molasses and boozy overtones, but there is never anything too overpowering. I don't see any room for improvement in this area.

The very first taste can bring a bit of a shock to the taste buds, but it quickly settles in and I developed an infatuation with Raison D'Extra shortly after we met. I have never had the earlier version of this beer, but from what I understand they just amped up the alcohol content (18%!) this time around. I like the way one bottle can make you feel great.

The rest of the experience is about as powerful as this Belgian ale promises from the beginning. The mouthfeel provides a comfortably slight numbness and the aftertaste lingers with you for the rest of the evening.

Dogfish Head strikes again!

Clear chestnut color, dark amber when held to light. Bubbly tan head is quick to settle into a big bubble color.

Smells like ultraconcentrated fig puree soaked in brandy.

Tastes big, boozey and raisin-tastic. Too boozey and sweet but as advertised as guess.

Bottled in May 2007.

A- Poured like a traditional Belgian Brown. Very murky and opaque. Sediments are present and ample. The color is rusty brown, but darker than the normal rusty red brown.

S- Mostly like a strong wine. Dark fruits and booze are prominent. Raisins and grapes are most prominent fruits, outside of that, the alcohol takes over.

T- Terrible at first, so I let it warm up. That helped a bit I guess. I don't want to just knock the beer, but it was a boozy mess. Alcohol was first and foremost to start off. Dark fruits, raisins and grapes and maybe a prune or two in there, mixes with the alcohol. Alcohol lingers at the end.

M- Syrupy and creamy. Kind of odd, but supports the weight of the brew. The alcohol really overpowers the taste and weight. This will knock you off your feet if you manage to drink it quickly.

I hope I got ahold of a bad bottle. Even after letting it warm up it was a boozy mess. The alcohol overpowers the other flavors and distracts from the possible complexity in the dark fruits. Drinks like a heavier quad, but not as balanced in malts and roasts.

Appearance: It has a nice ruby/amber color to it. It has no head and leaves very little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of raisins, red grapes, cherries, dark fruit, spices, caramel and a burbon like booziness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice complex fruit character to it. Dark fruit dominate from raisins to grapes to cherries with a nice caramely feel, probably from the aging and a light spiciness. Definite booziness giving it a slight burning sensation as you drink. Overall very good.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a very nice overall balance, feel and complexity.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas. Believe it or not, this is my first Dogfish Head beer and it certainly makes me want to try the Raison D'Être now!
