Notes:
Let's travel back in time again for another Dogfish Head Ancient Ale (Midas Touch was our first foray and Theobroma our most recent). Our destination is 9,000 years ago, in Northern China! Preserved pottery jars found in the Neolithic villiage of Jiahu, in Henan province, have revealed that a mixed fermented beverage of rice, honey and fruit was being produced that long ago, right around the same time that barley beer and grape wine were beginning to be made in the Middle East!

Fast forward to 2005. Molecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology calls on Dogfish Head to re-create another ancient beverage, and Chateau Jiahu is born.

In keeping with historic evidence, Dogfish brewers use brown rice syrup, orange blossom honey, muscat grape, barley malt and hawthorn berry. The wort is fermented for about a month with sake yeast until the beer is ready for packaging.

I picked this up when on a trip to State Line Liquours in Elkton MD. Share w/ octopus87, poured chilled into a flute and siedel.

A - A beautiful gold + amber like peach nectar w/ haze and visible effervessence. A frothy white head appears after a vigorous pour and leaves smatterings of lace

S - A fragrant mix of berry, honey and subtle creamy malt odors. The scent has tinges of grape juice and a dash of spice

M - A brisk juicy sweet note followed bby a honey texture that is light and dampens the carbonated tingle of the first sip. The malt is brisk and it has a nice complemenary note to the grape's earthy sweetness. There is a slight warming from 8% abv as it goes down

T - A pleasant fruity flavor which is like currants -sweet and earthy/slightly juicy in flavor. There is a light rice flavor which marries well and makes a tasty sake/mead hybrid of flavor. A berry taste w/ light tartness and creamy floral honey notes roll over the taste buds. The rice lightens and gives the texture a lift w/ gentle grainy malt flavor and slightly champagne like w/ a sour-sweet finish.

D - A great ale w/ very unique flavors--refreshing, yet strong crisp and malty w/ sweet and spicy elements. A definite A beer inspired from ancient times w/ sake aspects. An intriguing work by a pioneering brewery w/ an off-center 'tude. The drinkability is very good w/ flavor that is bold, yet graceful and blends almost seemlessly.

Bottled on 8/28/06.

I was admittedly a bit frightened by this one heading in, as I don't particularly like saké, or mead for that matter, and I have no idea what either hawthorn fruit or chrysanthemum flowers taste like.

It pours to a lightly smogged yellow with a skimming of tiny-bubbled foam.
Honey is immediately identifiable on the nose and is by far and away the premier factor. A secondary saké impression appears. Otherwise, it suggests mushy yellow apples, watermelon candies, rose petals and a variety of other garden blooms.
It enters the mouth with a burst of honey sweetness. It turns toward apple, melon, and white grape and stays every bit as sweet. For a moment, if you weren't paying attention, it could almost be confused with a hellesbock. Then the rice starts to show through and mingles with a dry and almond-pasty saké yeast. Wildflowers pick up the slack and continue the sweet trend, as it rides off in a perfumed direction.
Medium bodied, and fairly highly carbonation upfront, though the bubbles escape from the liquid quickly. Even when flat, this doesn't cloy up.
I dig the historical research behind this, and actually dig the reinterpretation quite a bit too. I never much cared for their other foray into the past, Midas Touch. But I'd do this again. The numbers I've assigned are more or less meaningless, because it is incomparable to anything. A "mood" beverage for sure, but I think it was pulled off well.

Single finger head with excellent thick lacing on a golden amber murky body. Aroma of orange juice, candied fruits, honey and caramel. As Is the case with so many dogfish head brews the initial taste is strong, complex. A few more sips one can pick out orange blossom, honey, candied fruits up front finishing very sweet and floral. Oily, medium body and light to moderate carbonation. This one is pretty boozy and too sweet for me. Complex and worth trying. I would share the bottle with a friend or three.

750 mL bottle from the 2009 vintage I believe. Pours a clear dark gold/light amber color with a loud and rapidly diminishing off-white foam. Bonus points for a very sexy and classy label. Grrr, baby!

Very vinous and white grapey on the nose with a dose of honeyed lighter-ish malts. Tropical alcohol, clean like a martini. Defies classification, for sure.

Tastes like unfiltered sake meets chardonnay meets American malt liquor. Green grapes are prominent and the rice wort is honeyed and plenty evident. Interesting and strange, but intriguingly drinkable. Sharp, brittle bite on the finish and nearly has as much sake flavor as Hitichino XS. Not as complex as XS, but plenty interesting in it's own right. Might not be worth the price, but it was damn fun to try at least once.

750 ml bottle split and poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottled on 08/28/06. Four years old. Awesome!

Thanks to Bnieman and his Dad for sharing this. Its a good way to kick off Brew Masters on Discovery!

A - Jiahu pours out a hazy, sediment-filled golden yellow in color with a low off-white head. Wispy skim on the top with no lace left over.

S - Sweet raw honey and white grapes with a bit of wheat and pale malts in the nose. A hint of spice comes through on the back end. It's thick and sweet-smelling.

T - The sweet honey and white grape wine-like flavor hits right up front with a lingering sweetness of candi sugar. The profile changes to a mildly spiced, somewhat cardboard-dry finish. Not bad, but it definitely shows its age. A dry yeasty component floats throughout the beer.

M - Medium-full bodied and smooth with a pleasant spritzy carbonation level that blends with the lingering sweetness very well. Not cloying at all.

D - Old but good, this brew reminds me a lot of Midas Touch with the honey and white grape. I've got to say that it holds up very well with age. I'm gonna grab a fresh bottle of this for comparison, but it's enjoyable even after four years. No alcohol presence at all.

A: Pours a nice light golden yellow hue with lots of tiny bubbles. The bubbles continue to explode like champagne in the glass. It is almost as if I poured pop rocks into this thing. Once it settles down there is no head to speak of and no lacing.

S: Nice sweet aromas with hints of grapes and fresh cut flowers.

T: Very unique. There is lots of honey right up front which is kind of overtaken by a green grape type flavor. The grapes linger a bit before being washed back out by more honey. A slight metallic flavor kind of lingers after each drink.

M: Nice carbonation and slightly dry.

D: This one is to be shared, I had a tough time drinking it all by myself. That being said it's not a beer I think was intended to be comsumed by one person in one sitting.

Overall: Pretty unique, but no where near DFH best offering. It has a light mead type character which is nice. It's a sipper that should be consumed in small quantites. I would have probably rated it a bit higher in taste had the metallic taste not been there. The combination of sweet and metallic just didn't sit right with me.

Poured from bottle, dated 2010, into a snifter glass.

A creamy white head is produced with a little bit of stickiness and leopard lacing. Body hits with a fruity lemon yellow and orange, dense and opaque, almost orb glowing in appearance. Pretty nice looking.

Extremely mushy ripe fruit on the nose. Tropical and mango/guava angle perhaps, fruit punch sense and a faint light herbal heat.

Palate is very creamy rushing in some mild banana, but a huge mushy mango, and other yellow to orange fruit senses. Apricot soft jam, hints of peach. Mouthfeel is extremely creamy feeling bringing that fruit punch angle more so than the beer, but still giving a sense of malt density. A good sweetness of subdued honey also, but nothing cloying or outrageous.

Having had a fresher one of these in the past, I remember not being as impressed, but this one just seemed so nice and felt real good.

750 ml bottle, bottled on 7/10/07. Served in a pint glass, it pours clear gold with a half inch white head. Not much head retention or lacing. It smells like honey, grain, apricots and grapes. There's also an aroma that reminds me of Budweiser for some reason (not in a bad way), I can't exactly explain it. Taste is fruity and sweet. It tastes pretty much the same way it smells, except there's a bit of a spicy and floral taste too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, with a bit of a syrupy feel. Drinkability is OK. Alcohol is noticable, but it's not overpowering. It's another unique brew from Dogfish Head, that's for sure. I'd have to be in a certain mood to drink this again but I would revisit this in the future.

Cool label. Pours a powdery, hazy pale orange (wit-like in appearance) topped by a rocky, off-white head. Large at first, settling into a sturdy ring. Candy sugar malt aroma with banana and tropical fruit opposed by a tart, acidic grape/cherry edge. Powdered sugar sweetness and banana-rum-fruit-cocktail meet tangy, moderately tart citrus and grape juice. Juice bitterness in an otherwise sweet finish. Interesting and warming. Very fruity and sweet overall. Big bodied, with a syrupy feel.

12/17/07- Purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ.

Presentation- 750ml bottle with a stamped code on the bottle glass itself. Poured into an oversized wine glass.

Appearance- Golden apricot colored orange pour. Nice creamy 1/2 inch white head but really lacking in the lace.

Smell- Sweet honeyed malt with a touch of mustyness. No hops detected.

Taste- Honey brew all the way. Honey is the overpowering flavor here with traces of rose water and a nice granny smith apple skin flavor. Kinda of floral and perfumy as well. Nice malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel- Super smooth with a low carbonation level. Creamy and lightly thickened. Wonderful light mouthcoating. Was the perfect beer for me to have because the honey and the low carbonation soothed my sore throat and my oncoming cold. How I keep my taste buds another day.

Drinkability- Another quality brew from Dogfish. Great melding flavors and great texture. Think I'm going to buy another to take back home with me.

A: Pours a clear and bright orange color. No head forms and no lace.
S: Sweet malt and honey up front. Some light fruitiness lingers on. A peppermint aroma as well.
T: Very sweet. Malt and honey up front. Grapes, and that odd peppermint flavor that I detected in the nose. Some cereal grain flavor as well.
M/D: A medium body that is low on the carbonation end. Sticky and syrupy. The alcohol shows a bit. A decent beer to sip on. Though one bomber is a bit much for a sitting.

An interesting beer. Kind of a novelty. It is worth a try however.

Pours a pale gold with 1/2 of fizzing, bubbly head that fades pretty quickly. Carbonation bubbles can be seen rising to the top. Rice, grapes, and honey notes in the nose. Grapes, honey, fruit, alcohol and yeast all present up front in this one, with an alcohol warmth in the finish. Full bodied and potent, this one is closer to wine than beer.

I love the effort DFH puts into keeping with traditional styles, but this one is a little on the wine side with all the grapes and a little on the potent side with a big ABV. With all that said, it's not all around bad. Worth checking into.

Pours a sparkling golden amber body that is slightly hazed. Skimpy white head lasts several minutes and leaves some delicate patch lacing.

Aroma is floral and spicy, very exotic. White grapes, apple skins, lilacs, and a cabinet full of exotic spices that I can't identify with any certainty. Very pleasant.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Soft and caressing, with a solid carbonation.

Taste is complex to the max. Notes of sake, lilacs, rose water, fresh white grapes, honey, green apples, earthiness, all driven by the myriad spice profile. Very tasty.

Definitely a winner, but somewhat of an enigma. This reminds me of the excellent Baladin Nora in its unique floral and spice profile. Very complex and a pleasant challenge to identify what's in the recipe. I look forward to my next adventure with this excellent replication of a 9,000 year old Chinese recipe.

Smell is summer fruity, with strong notes of grares and apricot. Also some floral notes are found.
Taste is extremely nice, with a strong friuty taste. The diffferent fruit tastes blend perfectly to produce a nice refreshing summer beer.
Great drinkability for an 8% beer. Alcohol is completely hidden.

Thanks to edbeer for sharing. 750ml bottle served in my Allagash tulip. Poured a golden-orange with a thin white head that dissipates into a skim. Clarity is hazy - just shy of translucent. Nose is grapes and bubblegum. Taste consistent with nose, maybe the addition of some orange in the mix. Mouthfeel is light-medium, with a consistent and mild background effervescence. An interesting and flavorful beer, but a little too sweet. However, probably my favorite of DFH's historical brews.

On Tap at Union Jack's in glenside.

A- Golden with a slight bronze within plus some white head on top of the liquid, minimal lacing, in fact even less than that. The cap on the top eventually faded into nothing.

S- Smells like a organic beer that I had recently. The malt plus barley is upfront along with a big whiff of honey. Some sweet grapes underneath. While some hops were used, you would not be able to tell since the ancient ingredients take up most of the smell.

T- Better than I remembered it. Chateau is huge on the honey with some of the muscat grapes following. Im not a expert on the ingredients used, but they are used well making for a good tasting brew. Maybe having it on tap is the cause of this, because I dont remember this being as good.

M&D- The mouth is sweet with a medium body and some carb going for it. Goes down incredibly smooth without any huge hops getting in the way. The drinkability was good as well even though the beer list stated that this was 11%, I did not taste it at all, well masked. Kudos to DFH for having the balls to brew something like this and releasing it annually.

The beer poured into the chalice hazy pale goledn with a white, low, fairly well lasting head which added light lacing to the glass.

The aroma was fruity banana when first poured. After the head retreated the aroma had a peppery spice and pronouced earthy character. It was musty, yet still had a candy presence and sweet honey. The aroma was estery and fruity and as it warmed the grape essence was notable, but still low. Also as it warmed the aroma became bready.

The flavor was bready from the get go with a lighly sweet impression when the beer first contacted the palate. The flavor was earthy and musty with a pepper flavor. The flavor was fruity with a very light banana and more grape essence as the beer warmed. Some alcohol was present and caused the pepper to be pronounced and warming (heading toward very slightly hot) on the palate just before the finish.

The finish was dry with lasting fruit and spice into the aftertaste. The body was medium with a low carbonation. The interesting part of the mouthfeel was how the peppery character left a light and low burning sensation on the palate and in the throat. The alcohol left a warming after consumption as well. An interesting and strange beer. It's not going to be a new favorite, but it does excite the senses as you take the journey.

750 ml bottle. The label says 8.2% ABV.

Single bottle for $7.99 at Tully's. It was a hazy yellow color with a medium head. It had a sweet aroma, with a noticeable alcohol presence. The taste was pretty much all honey. I thought this beer was a little too sweet. Plus, it needs to be drunk cold; it loses flavor when it warms.

Bottled on 8/28/06.

Pours a mildly hazy peach-golden color, with a blinding white head that lasts several good minutes before minimizing. Healthy bubbles too, abundant and quick, even some larger ones settling at the bottom that shoot up randomly. Interesting.

Aroma is honey, lemon, white grape, a slight bit of white pepper...attains an aged sort of dustiness, as if there's a veil over those and other aromas. I ain't just reading the bottle and dreaming, there's this interesting "distance" to the aroma. Earthy and subtle.

Abundant honey carries the flavor, with big peach, ginger, lemon and cinnamon characteristics. A maddeningly hard-to-describe pungency is delivered by what I'm guessing is that Sake yeast, and it's this non-sweet aspect of the flavor that offsets the fruity/herbal dominance elsewhere. Would like to see it come through even stronger, but it does creep up slowly during the sipping.

Mouthfeel is full and very sticky, heavier than your typical herbed/spiced beer. Has an almost mead-like consistency and complements the flavors well. But the stickiness hangs around longer than necessary. If you're drinking the entire bottle alone, a water by your side is highly recommended.

Definitely a sugary beer, but not cloying in a syrupy or alarmingly-sweet way. Also not the utterly incredible concoction we tend to expect from Dogfish Head. (those who dislike sweet beers might as well not even bother with it, considering the price.) It's a different sort of experience, and there's something to be said for that. When it comes to DFH's historical brews, Midas Touch is better, but this one is still worth the time and effort.

I really enjoy these historic and cultural beer recreations. This beer is a golden straw color with a hazy complexion. The smell is flowery....garden-like, with honey and plenty of fruit...peach and berries. The beer is extremely sweet. Sugary, honey, fruit juice,a nod a spice that lingers. A - Pours a clear golden-orange color with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lace.

S - Aroma is a mix of honey, light fruits, grape, bready caramel malt, and a bit of spicy yeasts.

T - Starts off with a mix of light fruits with some pear and apricot alongside some grape, honey, and a bit of coriander. Through the middle, some more honey comes through with some more spices and yeast flavor with a bit of caramel bready malt. The finish is a mix of honey, sweet malts, light fruits, some grape, and some sake yeast, with a hint of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet, lightly spicy and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Really nice and complex and nuanced. Good mix of unique flavors that really come together nicely.

Appearance - pours with a cloudy, almost pinkish cast. It's not pink though, it is a bright sunlight straw color, with some faint reddish tones. The bubbles are weakly put together and appear watery. The lacing isn't much but there are a few strands here and there.

Aroma - at first this has a decidedly sweet, champagne aroma - winy, spritzy. As it settles down, though, some neutral grain aromas come through. No great essence, just a standard beery kind of smell.

Taste - plenty of grain and honey sweetness, enhanced by a low-key alcohol warming. Pretty much like malt liquor, only no corny taste. There is an interesting hop balance on the swallow, it arrests the sweetness fairly well without removing it. The finish is clean, slightly lemony, warm in the throat and wet to a point. Sort of like a ramped up summer ale.

Mouthfeel - fairly crisp, a slight buttery smoothness; light to medium body.

Drinkability - pricy but interesting. A good pick for a tasting of unique beers.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into my mad Fox glass. It poured a murky orange amber color with a very thin white lacing barely covering the top of the beer.

The aroma shows a lot of the grapes and honey to it. The tartness of the grapes and the sweetness of the honey go together pretty well. Some citrusy, floral notes are there as well as some malty, sweet notes.

The taste also blends the tart, crisp grapes with the honey and malty sweetness nicely. It's a little sweeter up front with more of the tart, fruits and some bitter citrus in the finish. A little of the floral, citrus flavors are in there as well.

The mouthfeel is on the heavier side with carbonation being a little below average. Overall it was a pretty nice beer. I liked how the grapes and honey balanced each other out. Lots of different flavors going on in it but it came together pretty nicely.

Poured into a snifter. Shared with a friend.

3.5 A: Hazed honey/wheat color. One and a half fingers of frothy white head with below average retention and just a touch of lacing.

4.0 S: Smells a bit like an earthy saison. The grape comes through well, but isn't overdone. The honey is next and the hawthorne fruit gives a nutty flavor (at least I think it's the hawthorne). Only lightly vinous. I like the nose on this one.

4.0 T: The taste is certainly interesting. Herbal and sweet foremost. Honey, grape, and the flavors of the hawthorne come to the front with every sip. Again, this has saison-like characteristics with herbs and earth, but also a spicy pepper and clove yeastiness like a tripel. Plenty of fruitiness with peach, wild apple, and mildly vinous grape. Pretty good and definitely unique. Borderline 4.5.

4.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation that is pleasantly spritzy. Good creaminess. Very nice here.

4.0 D: At first I thought this wouldn't be very drinkable due to the sweetness. However, the palate becomes desensitized to the sweetness very quickly, which I found surprising. I only had half a bottle, but found myself wanting more.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2012. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a foamy 1-2 finger white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Good foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of honey, pear, grape, clove, herbal, apricot, bread, earth, bubblegum, pepper, light banana, and yeast spices. Damn nice and unique aromas; great balance and complexity. Taste of honey, grape, pepper, herbal, pear, apricot, floral, clove, earth, bread, banana, orange, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of light fruits, herbal, floral, clove, earth, and light yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor balance and complexity; with zero cloying sweetness for a 9% beer at 10 IBU. Fairly clean finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with hardly any warming noticed at all after the finish. Overall this is yet another damn nice experimental ancient ale from Dogfish Head. Tons of flavor complexity and balance; very smooth to sip on for a 9% beer. There are also a lot of interesting flavors and aromas I cannot describe, but they work well. Very impressive.
