Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial Stout |  18.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (1428), on-tap (104), growler (2), nitro-tap (2), cask (1)

Notes:
Brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley, World Wide Stout is dark, rich, roasty and complex. This Ageable Ale clocks in at 15-20% ABV and has a depth more in line with a fine port than with a can of cheap, mass-marketed beer.

heads up, this is a review from a 2008 bottle, so some of the characteristics might be changed a little or a lot. been years since i had it fresh, and dont remember loving it, so who knows. this beer pours black, no light coming through, and almost totally flat. the nose is not as boozy as an 18% beer usually is. i smell a ton of dark barley, some oats, and some left over sugar. the flavor is very deep and robust. tons of roast, almost burnt barley malt, and of course abotu as much alcohol as a beer can hold. still, its smooth in the mouth and a little woody. body is well big, with pretty much zero carbonation. im sure thats a product of its age. it is a very pleasant beer, loved the aftertaste. its bitter and sweet at the same time. impressively enjoyable, usually beers this strong are weird to drink. still, its a must share 12 ounce.

I have tried this beer in the bottle and on tap. Both experiences were exceptional. I tried on tap over the summer on a business trip to Boulder at the great place called "West End Grill" on Pearl St. Even with all of the excellent local beers it stood out as an excellent beer. Great body and very complex flavor, especially for such a strong beer (18%).

I recently found it in NY and bought a bottle for $12 for 12 OSS, steep but totally worth it. I think I likes the bottle better but both were over the top.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into my tulip.

A - Poured out a dark brown/black with no light in sight. Produced half a finger of brown head that dissipated quickly but left a nice lacing on the glass.

S – Nice alcohol aroma hits first followed by coffee, toffee and big roasted malts. Dark fruits running in there as well.

T – Dark chocolate and big roasted malts hit first. Coffee flavor follows through but not overwhelming. Touch of sweetness in the mix but it is not cloying. Dark fruit and raisins run along the palate. Has some nice caramel and vanilla notes.

M – Medium to full bodied with little to no carbonation. Nice and chewy. Coats the palate well. Light alcohol warming at the finish.

O – Its good, its damn good. Warmed up nicely. Flavorful. Tasty. It’s a winner.

12 oz bottle Poured down the side of a CBS snifter a small head forms. Dark and solid, no light escapes the grasp of this beast. No lacing appears when sipped or swirled.

There's a lot of dried fruit on the nose, sweet raisins and dates an molasses. A little alcohol sneaks in there.

The taste is really sweet (like a port) up front and it lingers throughout.chocolate covered raisins , irish coffee , red wine ( merlot ? ) molasses, dates come through and change sip to sip. Prune juice? The alcohol makes an appearance at the back of the tongue ( like the alcohol taste in a good jenever ) and lingers along dried fruit and bitter chocolate

It's a super smooth, thick, and coats my mouth and teeth with a taste that goes on and on.

This is my first WWS, so I can't compare it to fresher. It is a delicious veer and The 18% does not play a huge role, but it's a sweet and good beer !

Split a 12 oz bottle with a friend. Snifters. This bottle also happened to be three years old. Got it at Tiffany's in Kalamazoo. Very fine selection.

A - for all the buzz, I expected more. It wasn't even black, but the head was outrageous. Went down quickly though.

S - here we go. All I smell is alcohol and bourbon. It's not as overwhelming as I expect 18% to be.

T - very smooth for what it is. I actually didn't think it tasted much more than 11 or 12%. Lots of barley of course, but also a good deal of sugar and hops.

M - also surprisingly subdued. Everything about this beer defied my expectation, though not necessarily in a good way.

O - decent. I bought another bottle for much less money in New York. I'm excited to try it again.

Update: I recently consumed said bottle, which was fresh. I was told by many that the alcohol would play a much larger role in the fresh bottle, which it did, but I was surprised at how suppressed the other flavors were due to the aging (including the barley, chocolate, and bourbon). Although it was a chore to get through, it was a totally different experience drinking it fresh.

Bottled 11/14/08. Its been in my possession the whole time.

Appearance: Pours opaque, not as thick as you might think. Dark brown head with expected brief retention and very minimal lacing. It does have legs like wine or port.

Smell: Very boozy. Dark fruit and vinous notes. I know its not barrel aged, but its got some oaky, vanilla aromas. Surprisingly doesn't have strong chocolate, coffee, or roasty notes, just some suggestion.

Taste: The flavor is at the same time better and worse than the smell. Better because in addition to the dark fruit and red wine flavors, there bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and deep roasted flavors of charred wood. Nice complexity of flavor. Worse because there is so much hot alcohol flavor that it is distracting. It burns the mouth and nose with each sip. The saving grace is the finish which is long and delicious.

Mouthfeel: Has the feel of a big beer, especially in the finish. In the mouth though, the alcohol sharpness thins the feel.

Overall: Its a cool idea, but its just too damn boozy. They could make a big 12-14% stout that still tastes like beer, and I'd buy this. I've had this at multiple stages of age and I'm not sure it really gets much better than when fresh-- it certainly doesn't tame the booziness.

Bottle poured into a snifter glass.

Bottle is about 1 1/2 years old.

Pours a dark black with very little head that disappears quickly.

Sweet smell with some of the dark fruit smell mixed in. Hint of a bourbon like smell.

Taste is sweet almost too sweet with some of the fruit flavors. It with a strong bourbon like alcohol burn through the finish.

Quite a unique beer that I had saved for a while. Great as a novelty but not worth it for any sort of quanity/regular drinking.

12oz bottle dated 11/14/08 into a snifter.

A- Pours a dark brown/near black with a half finger of khaki brown head that actually hangs around on the edges of the glass…impressive. Big alcohol legs/film. 4

S- Intensely sweet and sugary malt notes with an undertone of booze up front…not stinging, but you know it’s there. Small hints of roasted/charred malt give off a bit of a coffee character that is followed up by faint smells of dark fruits (figs, dates, raisins, plums). A bit of a molasses note in there as well. Pretty nice. 4

T- Sweetness follows the nose with the alcohol close behind. Again, it’s not a sting or a burn, but definitely warming. Much more roasted character than the nose suggested. Espresso tones mingle with sweet raisin and date notes. This beer finishes forever, leaving behind more roasted malt (coffee) flavors with the molasses I noticed in the nose. This is damn tasty. 4.5

M- A bit too thin for a stout of this magnitude. The carbonation seems just a touch aggressive as well, which might play into the lighter mouthfeel. 3.5

O- I am very surprised/impressed by this brew. After having this fresh a few months ago I was curious to see if a few years would mellow this beer out, and they definitely have. Incredibly smooth for being 18% abv. 4.5

*200th Review*

12 oz. bottle poured into DFH Signature glass. Bottled in 2011.

A - Pours syrupy and black with about a finger of almond colored head. Shows great retention for a beer this big. Speckled lace clings to the edges of the glass.

S - Rich and malty aroma composed of candied figs, vanilla, and oak. There is an earthy booziness in the aroma that reminds me of scotch. Spicy hazlenut and coffee on the back end.

T - Sweet mocha on the forefront. Bittering oak and cloying molasses malt follow. Some good dark fruit flavors emerge as it warms. Slight burn on the back of the tongue, but not totally offputting. Aftertaste is of dates and booze.

M - Full bodied with mellow carbonation. Smooth with a bit of an alcohol bite on the back end.

O - Another of the polarizing DFH green caps. I thought this one was very good. It was unsurprisingly sweet, with a rich candied character to cut the booze. I enjoyed it more as it warmed and more fruit and vanilla flavors emerged. Not as good as it is on tap, but this one always has a place in my cellar.

12oz bottle poured into a small snifter. Bottled in 2010 D.

A: Pours a very very dark ruby brown that appears black in the glass. A 1 finger khaki head sticks around for a minute or two before dwindling down to a film. Certainly not going to see any carbonation in this beer. No real lacing.

S: Very reminiscent of a port wine, notes of carmel and dark roasted malt. A hint of vanilla and a bourbon barrel. Dark fruits (raisin and fig) become more apparent as it warms, also some hints of coffee.

T: A complex blend of stout meets port. Has all of the dark chocolaty and roasted malts you would expect but with a blend of port wine, bourbon and vanilla.

M: A very creamy and full bodied brew. Warming from the booze. For how strong it is the booze is well hidden, just very warming.

Overall even more impressive than I anticipated. All the qualifications of a very good stout. Surprisingly drinkable yet very warm, great stout taste with a lot of age and port taste. Worth a try by any strong beer fan.

2008 Vintage consumed end of July 2012 on honeymoon

A: a black hole. There is very minimal head formation that is off-white in appearance and dissipates very quickly. You can see the alcohol sticking to the glass as you swirl the beer.

S: huge enormous sweet malt, caramel/toffee, brown sugar crushes the nostrils and is detected upon pouring the brew. Surprisingly the alcohol is pretty well hidden but it is still noticeable. There is also a slight vanilla aspect to this as well.

T: huge caramel/toffee and malt again dominate this brew. I pick up a some bitter dark chocolate and a very slight hint hop note. There is a creaminess present but I find it more like half & half than vanilla. Raisins also sweeten this one up. The alcohol content has died down considerably since the first time I had this one back in 2008 but it still is present. It actually helps the beer balance itself out because without it this would just be too damn sweet.

M: as you can expect, this is a full bodied stout. It leaves a slight burn of alcohol but again, not as much as expected and it actually has a pretty smooth finish.

O: nice brew, but I don’t think I will be interested in purchasing another one of these. It’s much better with the age on it, but it is still just a decent beer at best. the alcohol has definitely calmed down, but the massive sweetness that is needed to balance out the big ABV just isn’t that appealing to me. This one had 4 years on it and it doesn’t make much sense to buy a beer now just to make it decent 4 years later.

Bottled this year. Fresh.

Looks medium-thin in body, not totally opaque, only a thin collar.
I like the nose, since it has noticeable alcohol, but i knew it would. Not as sweet as i remember this beer being when i was a noob, granted this beer was a different recipe way back then with a larger malt bill and higher alcohol. Roasted malts are strong on the bill, dry cacao.
I have been drinking a lot of bourbon this week, so understand that when i say the heat is not overpowering where i am coming from. The heat is at a really nice level. Again not as hershey syrup as i thought i remembered. dark chocolate, roasted malts again are strong here. Some vanilla and oatmeals.

For me not worth $10 a bottle when i can drink a dram of great bourbon for much less, but i still like this beer.

Pours a deep brown, almost black color with a little more than one finger of creamy coffee colored head with decent retention.

The scent is of roasted malts, chocolate, notes of coffee and alcohol.

The taste is also of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, sweet and warming peppery alcohol.

Full body, very thick and creamy, very warming on the tongue.

Overall this was a pretty good stout, the insanely high abv was present but did not overwhelm the other flavors.

Bottled 11/14/2008 poured into a snifter glass.

A: very dark brown with garnet highlights; the clarity seems decent enough but it's had to tell as you can only see through less than an inch. The slight medium brown head dissipates quickly to only a ring of mostly compact bubbles.

S: Alcohol and dark fruit dominates the aroma with notes like fermented plums with raisins and figs. The alcohol being soft with just a touch on the solventy side but. The malt has calmed over the years with only light notes of roastiness and coffee. No hop aroma detected. There is a slight earthy, umami note note as well.

T: It's like scotch blended with a stout, the roasty notes in it's youth seems to have faded leaving a lot of boozy with little support. The flavors match the nose with a dark fruit (raisins, plums and figs) and a hints of roasty malt and some coffee. There is a light malt sweetness and a moderate hops bitterness with the balance being on the bitter side. The medium-dry finish gives way a long lasting bitter and alcoholic finish.

M: Full bodied with moderately-light carbonation. There is a thickness to the body with a lig ht creaminess, very light astringency and a huge belly warming alcohol warmth.

O: I like liquor so the booze doesn't bother me one bit but after a few years of aging the alcohol has become the star player. I'll review a younger bottle soon because this was one of my all time favorites.

On Tap (2011)

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

(Aged for 1 year)

Thick, black body with no head. This leaves the glass with an oily sheen, but no real sticky lace.

Sweet and boozy aroma with good amounts of port-like qualities, roast, dark fruits, caramel and toffee, and high alcohol presence.

The flavor isn't quite as successful, as the booze dominates the complex flavors, along with a rubbing alcohol/chemical note. There is still good amounts of dark fruits, licorice, and roast, but they're not particularly easy to access.

Medium bodied with low carbonation, slightly oily and creamy. Impressive and appropriate for the style and the magnitude.

I don't think I need to try this one again. I haven't been particularly impressed with Dogfish Head's super-high ABV offerings, but it's by no means bad.

Review from notes:
Did a 2006-2011 vertical, 2006 tasted the best, so the full review and numbers are based on that

12 oz bottle, 2006, poured into a snifter

A- Black with a one finger dark tan head

S- big change from fresher bootles, port, oak, hint of chocolate and coffee.

T- Oak, port like qualities, roasted coffee that leaves a nice bitter finish, dark chocolate, molasses, very well balanced, no hints of alcohol, and great complexity.

M- Smooth, medium to full body, creamy

O- Nose is throwing me off(oxidised?), but I love the complexity and see what people are saying about letting this go past 5 years, would really like to see what another five years would do. The more I drink this and the warmer it get that more I love this beer. WWS needs at least 3 years on it to make it worth your time and money, but if you can't hold out two more years do it!

2011: 4.5/3.5/3.5/3.5/3.5 Very hot, lots of alcohol, very hot, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, some vanilla, tons of alcohol in the finish, harsh.

2010: 4.5/4/4/4/4 Dark chocolate, some roasted coffee, roasted malts, dark fruits, hint of red wine, alcohol is a little noticeable and slightly hot. One year helps a lot.

2009: 4.5/4/4.5/4.5/4.5 Dark chocolate, dark fruits, cherries, plums, red wine. After taste is dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Alcohol is barely noticeable and the taste just getting better. Finally wowed by this beer. Two years of aged has only done good things to this beer. I think you should let this sit for at least two years before drinking

2008: 4.5/4.5/4.5/4.5/5 Rich chocolate upfront, some roasted malts, and a great port flavor in the finish. Getting roasted coffee and chocolate. Very similar to the 09 and the little bit less of the alcohol I was getting in the 09. This is great and still only getting better. Alcohol is almost unnoticeable. I love this beer.

2007: 4.5/4.5/4.5/4.5/5 Dark and milk chocolate, port finish, some molasses, after taste is roasted coffee, sweeter than fresher bottles. Alcohol is very similar to 08. Drinking very nicely, easy to drink. Much better than fresh, but about the same as 08.

Wow, this beer was expensive and totally worth it. I can't believe how strong this is yet so drinkable. The alcohol (~18%!?) is definitely there, but even without being totally huge in flavor the beer still masks it fairly well. And while I say it isn't "totally huge," I mean, I was expecting something out-of-this-world, when in fact it's totally in-of-this-world. It's very much like the best imperial stouts out there, with big coffee flavor, a hint of vanilla and even some bourbon. It goes down smooth, with only a slight bubble to it.

Frankly, considering I had it on a mostly empty stomach, I'm surprised how comfortable and not drunk I felt upon completion. An all around success and one of the best beers I've tried. If only it weren't so pricey.

This is a stalwart of all the "best of" lists that you see but I was always reluctant to drop down nine bones for a single twelve ounce bottle when you can usually get a rock solid sixer for the same price. I recently stopped in a liquor store in Delaware and decided the time was right while on native soil.

Pours an absolute jet black into my pint glass. No sliver of ruby or brown at the bottom, nothing. Just moonless night. I did get a brief tan head which left a few droopy tufts of head but not much. I'm honestly impressed I got that much. Nose is heavy on the coffee, vanilla, wood, and booze. It is a strong, robust aroma that hits you from a few feet away. I appreciate the lack of half measures. I can also see the many port references. Complex and formidable.

An overdose of flavor, as I kind of figured. I guess this makes up for all that cheap pale piss we've all drank and reviewed. Coffee and oatmeal predominate early, and then the serious booze hits. It is harsh and burns but doesn't quite overwhelm. Definitely some vanilla and oak as well. If you told me ten percent I'd say too harsh and oppressive but at eighteen it almost seems a bargain. It goes without saying that you can't rush this one, no matter how much you enjoy it.

Texture is thick and luxuriant and makes attempts at smooth, but talk about swimming against the tide. Three or four years of aging might work it out, or not. This beer is pure craftsmanship, and a wonder of the brewer's art, although certainly not for everyone.

12oz bottle into Portsmouth snifter. Bottled 11/17/2009.

A: Pours a deep black with a half inch of dark brown head that quickly bubbled away into a faint collar.
S: A very strong and rich nose. I get potent notes of anise, dark chocolate, black coffee and soy sauce, with a hint of toasted marshmallow, chocolate ice-cream, and roasted grains.
T: Sweeter than I was expecting. Chocolate dominates alongside flavors of molasses, sweet caramel, fudge, soy, sherry, wood, and raisins. Not getting as much coffee as the nose. Finish is sweet and full of caramel and raisins, and the aftertaste is warm with booze and full of chocolate.
M: Thankfully not that boozy anymore. The alcohol is noticeable, but it’s not a hot rubbing alcohol mess. Body is full and the mouthfeel is sweet and thick. Carbonation froths up on my palate when it hits my mouth and is made up of fine tingly bubbles.
O: Much more tame than when I had this beer fresh. I think I may actually enjoy this, although it’s not something I’d have often. This beer is too sweet and too alcoholic to drink often. Also, this beer would be an entirely different (negative) animal if I was reviewing the beer fresh. Age, age, age.

s: roasted malts, booze, some chocolate.

t:lots of chocolate, nice complex kinda roasty flavor mixed with the almost earthyness of the barley.

mf: only a medium body, which is surprising. the flavors come and go. each playing it's own note with traces of the 18% always around. The booze is distracting and took me a few drinks to actually start to look past it.

The pour is nearly black in color with a thin off-white head. Oh wow that’s harsh. Intense booze, rubbing alcohol, and acetone just start things off on the wrong foot. The roasted malt is there in there as well. The flavor is just cloyingly sweet, but at least it doesn’t have an overwhelming acetone and adhesive character. I wouldn’t ever have this again.

Oh how I love this beer.

Typical appearance from a high-ABV stout. Pitck black, minimal head.

Aroma and taste are both boozy, with malt, chocolate, dark fruit and sweet! Port-like. Mouthfeel is nice and thick; syrupy. Despite being very boozy and warming, it's also very smooth.

Delicious, sweet, high-ABV dessert stout.

Bottle had been aged at room temperature for 2 years.

It pours extremely dark, second only to Dark Lord in terms of the color depth. Light does not escape World Wide Stout. It was poured into a tulip glass. Hardly any lacing to speak of.

Smells like... well a ton of Barley. Also get some fig / date notes in it.

Taste is remarkable. I will be honest in that this was my favorite beer before I aged it, and two years later it has really come into its own. I definitely get the dates and just a hint of grape in the taste. The barley is very complex. There is a lot going on in this beer. As I progressed through the bottle, it seemed to open up a bit similar to wine. I recommend drinking it around 50 degrees. Alcoholic bite at the end reminds you of what you're drinking, in a pleasant way.

Completely coats the mouth in syrupy deliciousness.

Really the best of the best as far as I'm concerned. Certainly the best of the high caliber stouts. A must try.

Review from 12/2010 notes. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a near black red amber. Minimal head leaves a ring around the glass and little lacing. Sweet and toasty malts, fruit and booze aroma. An intense mixture of sweet and toasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, caramel. Big alcohol hit. So sweet, it's almost a cross between an English barleywine and a stout. Nice. I'm going to cellar some these every year.

Draft into a snifter.

Note: I arose one afternoon to find a nasty, bloody scrape on my left knee, another on my right elbow, an aching shoulder, and a very angry wife. I am told that my prior evening included at least one (very plausibly more than one) Dogfishhead World Wide Stout and a drunken fight with a stop sign. The sign won.

My memory is, as you might imagine, a bit hazy. I do remember this being a very good, very strong beer. I also remember noting that it was 100% opaque, even held up to the light. Fortunately, I discovered a review scrawled on both sides of a bar receipt. Apparently, I did not make it to drinkability, so I will simply say, “No.” In my personal experience, this beer was not drinkable. I will add that World Wide Stout goes down much easier than you might expect, given the exceptionally high ABV. That probably explains my evening. I'm giving it a 4 in this department, with the caveat that this is based on one serving, sipped slowly and responsibly.

What follows is my “review,” unedited:

A: Suprising ly little lacing. Dark as a black fuckinghole.

S: Smells like moxor oil espresso strong coffee alcohol—frat prarty

T: Strongest stout beer eve delivers or expeclations. Every deark beer you ever tasted. Bitter, coffee

MF: Thick as fuck – heavy coats mouth syrup syrup

Serving type: on-tap
