Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial Stout |  18.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (1428), on-tap (104), growler (2), nitro-tap (2), cask (1)

Notes:
Brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley, World Wide Stout is dark, rich, roasty and complex. This Ageable Ale clocks in at 15-20% ABV and has a depth more in line with a fine port than with a can of cheap, mass-marketed beer.

Opaque and thick pour. Good roasty malty aroma Good roast, chocolate malts, perfect carbonation, not as overwhelming alcohol as the 23% 2003.

Had the 2006 courtesy of Hop Devil Grill and it was a top-notch stout and an upgrading of my rating. Stood up well as a good second to Speedway Stout vertical.
Supposedly 2007 at Beer Bistro, chocolatey his year, and like a port.

2005 Edition, cellar stored since Fall of 2006.

Ok, so I really had not ever tried this one before and I had a this bottle sitting in the closet for a while and really wanted to give this a shot. I put it in the fridge about a week ago, and last night just grabbed it for no other reason then I felt I wanted it. Poured a very deep dark black with a minimal say one inch of thick brown head that faded rather quickly leaving behind just a touch of film across the top and a nice amount of side glass lace. Absolutely opaque, no light was coming though on this one. Smell was very full and rich, and very sweet. A ton of chocolate could be picked up at first, but this mellowed and mixed with some oak and caramel aromas. Deep sense of roasted malts comes over you, no taste of the ABV. A full on malt explosion takes hold on the first sip. Deep roasted flavors, mixed in with chocolate and a robust full earthy feel. This was really complex and very smooth. Had the thick consistency of a shake like dessert, but without the carbonation. Lots of wood and oak like flavors came though out. I was shocked by how mellow this was. It really offered me no idea of how strong it was and I was able to sip through the bottle with ease. I don’t know if it was the aging or if it really is just that good, but this was excellent. Very rich and smooth and really took me by surprise. I was expecting something a bit harsher, but this was very drinkable and really very nice. I think I have another bottle floating around and if I do I will save it for a very cold night. This was a perfect nighttime sipper, probably one of the best I have had for hat role in a very long time. Definitely have to recommend this one and seek one out again.

The pour is nearly black in color with a thin off-white head. Oh wow that’s harsh. Intense booze, rubbing alcohol, and acetone just start things off on the wrong foot. The roasted malt is there in there as well. The flavor is just cloyingly sweet, but at least it doesn’t have an overwhelming acetone and adhesive character. I wouldn’t ever have this again.

On tap at the Falls Church brewpub.

A: Midnight black oil with a decent tannish head.

S: Simply a lot going on here. Some vanilla and lots of roasted malt. Some dark fruits and maybe a hint of chocolate.

T: Good amount of alcohol to go with the very dark malt and wood flavors. Some port and accompanied by a tad bit of vanilla.

M: Not much carbonation and extremely thick. While this one is fairly heavy, can't believe that it's nearly as high in alcohol as it is.

D: Pretty good considering the abv and all that's going on, but an 8oz. snifter is enough for me.

Purchased at Once Upon A Vine in Richmond, VA waaay back in 2006 with my pal, Ando. Ah, those were the days...

Bottled On: 10/29/05

Appearance: Humble black body with a small (and getting smaller by the second), tan-colored head. Nice legs!

Smell: Starting things off are notes of sugary sweet chocolate candy, a half teaspoon of soy sauce, raisin extract, a glass of Harveys' Bristol Cream, and a distinct note of highly charred sugars. Wafts of punchy alcohol as it begins to warm.

Taste: Intensely sweet and crammed to the gills with flavors of chocolate syrup, maple syrup, Coca-Cola syrup, simple syrup, and lets says raisin-flavored syrup. There's some roast in there, but it came be missed while you're getting revved up from all that extreme sweetness. Whew! A tiny pinch of anise. More Bristol Cream. More juicy raisins. Maybe even some black cherries (although, with the alcohol starting to kick in, I could be conjuring up all sorts of crazy stuff). A few drops of day-old coffee. Maybe some dark stained wood. While you can definitely feel all the alcohol in here, it's not coming through too terribly much in the taste, like a dreadful Avery Mephistopheles.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. All the while it's warming on the tongue and warming in the belly.

Drinkability: Paired rather well with the film Harold & Maude and its soundtrack by Cat Stevens. A unique, high-octane beer that, surprisingly, is sorta somewhat maybe kinda drinkable. It's hard not to break down laughing really. Don't drink if you've had anything less than a full night's rest, as it'll gentle lull you to sleZZZ.z.zzZ

Bottled 10/10/06 and tasted just over a year later

Appearance: It takes a hard pour to create a head on this espresso colored beer, and there is only a bit of lacing before the head disappears entirely

Smell: Boozy chocolate and coffee, rum-soaked prune and molasses

Taste: Opens with a depth charge of molasses that builds with chocolate, prune and fruity/coffee flavor (Ethiopian Yergecheffe); after the swallow, the chocolate flavor jumps to the fore and lasts forever

Mouthfeel: Thick and syrupy, with very low carbonation

Drinkability: Don't dare drink more than one, but it is a fine sipper

Picked up on my trip to Colorado earlier this year.

Bottled on 11/17/09.

Pours an opaque, thick black with a compact 1 inch tan head that fades to an oily film on the top of the beer. Foamy cascading rings of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark fruits, roasted malt, and some sour wine-like aromas. As the beer warms, I am getting a weird celery smell coming off this one. Taste is of dark roasted malt, dark dried fruits (plums/raisins), turbinado sugar, and some smoky almost campfire flavors. The 18% ABV is definitely in your face with a burning sensation in the throat after each sip. This beer is very thick and creamy in the mouth, with a low level of carbonation. Overall, this is a special occasion beer to me. At 18% ABV, this is something I would only tackle once in a while. Too bad WWS isn't distributed to CA because I would probably buy a few more of these to put in the cellar.

2004 bottle drank in 2005 courtesy of Jan Primus: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small dark head with minimal retention. Aroma of roasted malt with a vinous feel to it. The roasted malt with what seems to be very little hops also dominates taste. Body is lighter then expected (I was expecting some kind of Expedition Stout monster) and alcohol is not easily detectable which is a feat for an 18% beer. Coffee is detectable though not overly dominant. Overall, even though this is an excellent stout I think I had put my hope too high and am a bit disappointed.

Very well aged and properly cellared, the beer ages gracefully as any. The alcohols smoothen out to the point where it hardly registers as an 8% Stout. Fruity sweet to taste, but with fuller attentuation and less sweetness than expected. An absolute gem of a beer after 6 years of age.

----

Tried to cellar this one, but couldn't resist any longer. In the anticipation of aggression, strength, power, and intimidation, I was impressed. The brew was not at all as bolsterous as I suspected. Instead, a well rounded, well matured, full, rich, and much much mellower than remembered. Very non-offensive chocolates and espresso. Smooth and velvety to the whole mouth. Finishes creamy and with a lingering Gheardelli, Starbucks marriage.

07 / 03 / 05:
Nice edition in the latest line of world class stouts. Pours a motor oil viscocity with a dainty but thick tan head with highlights of mohogany. Smells malty, roasy, espresso, deep fruits, tart and alcoholic. Tastes the same with emphasis on the expresso, cocoa, and alcohol. Surprisingly not as thick to the palate as expected, but no whimp either. Full round mouthfeel, silky smooth and sliced nicely from the alcohol. Chewy. Finishes alcoholic and not as dry as expected. Cherries, figs, and coffee round this beer. Aftertaste is roasty, chocolaty, tart, and alcoholic. A very good beer, wish I had tried the earlier versions.

2001 tasted in 2002. Notes added 2004.
Clear?... Pitch black in color with a thin but dark reddish collar. Intense and complex aroma: molasses, licorice, cocoa, sweet malt, dark fruit- dates, figs?, prunes, raisins, alcohol. The body is quite full, almost syrupy, and lays in the mouth. Rich, thick, creamy, smooth! The flavor is clearly sweet - almost too sweet - but with a massive character and complexity. Very rich, dark and fruity with a thin cusp of roastiness that helps to anchor it. The alcohol clearly comes through but does not overwhelm. This is a beer that defies definition.... far more than a stout, way too dark and sweet to be a barleywine... just "World Wide Stout"! Without question, one of the best beers in the world! Only time will tell as to whether or not this beer will really age well, but based on the one I just had (tasted June 2004), it's coming along exceptionally well.

2003 tasted in October 2005.
The 2003 version is, IMHO, a far reach from the quality of the original 2001 bottling. Vinous fruit and alcohol immediately hits you in the nose, and it's not particularily backed by much although there is some sweet caramel maltiness. The fruitiness, however, dominates with notes of sweet red wine, red grapes, juicy red berries, currant, fig and sticky-sweet raisins. The body is as expected, full-medium, and with a moderate, very fine-bubbled carbonation (it does not seem to be bottle-conditioned) that just lightly caresses the tongue to awaken the taste buds. The alcohol can be felt going down, and it lingers almost like like the heat from a shot of Jack Daniels. The flavor follows the nose with little variance, offering tons of dark, juicy and vinous fruit backed by minor notes of chocolate, coffee and caramel. It finishes with lingering notes of dark fruit and (what I consider to be a little too much) alcohol. So, even though the alcohol may have been reduced from the slightly higher 2002 version, I think it may have been produced a bit faster too - and it's suffered a bit because of it.

2005-2006 tasted in May 2007
Unfortunately I don't know what year this is, it's a short-fill from Brian Selder's basement. Bright green cap though. I'm guessing 2005 -2006. In any case, BACK IN BUSINESS!!! The alcohol is contained and it's amazingly rich and complex with notes of raisins, coconut, almonds, filberts, prunes, cashews, pineapple, cherry, dense dark sugar syrup, a touch of wood (not sure where that's coming from), and apples. There's a waft of heavy alcohol on the nose but it doesn't really carry into the flavor - there is some heat though. Very nicely done. Certainly worth cellaring for many years to come!!!

3-year-old vintage poured into DFH Alehouse pint.

Pours very deep black with nearly no translucence whatsoever. The smell is loaded with roasted malt characters, with touches of dark fruits and vanilla. The taste does not disappoint, with a faint woodiness starting the show through, the vanilla shining brighter, and there are even aspirations toward more chocolatey ideals. This brew has aged nicely! It does not malinger on the tongue, but remains strong and heavy enough to be both drinkable and sippable.

Here it is, my first "real-time" review. I will type my thoughts as I drink, and it's no ordinary brew at all. This is my second bottle of this mighty stout, the first one gave me one of my worst hangovers of all time. It was my 5th beer of the night, but it counted for 5 more! I'm more in my right mind tonight...
First off, someone didn't like the label! The words "vim and vigor" are markered out! My guess is that someone in government beurocracy thought that the phrase suggested healthy properties to the beer. Idiots! So now it reads "A very dark beer brewed with ridiculous amounts of barley,"
Color is completelely, fully Stygian black, head is a good 1/2", that slims down right quick, and a tannish hue. Aroma is strong and powerful from the start. Magnificent! Deep, dark, roasty and toasty, boozy, rummy, ...the deeper I drinker in the nose, the more the alcohol kicks into my senses! Like a rich, roasted cognac! A stick of molasses candy, wrapped in a licorice whip and doused with a cocktail of Meyer's, Amaretto, B&B, and Booker's bourbon! This aroma is utterly unheard of! Now to drink the damned thing!
Gargantuan mouthfeel, thick, rich...well, really those phrases are useless in this case, I need something stronger. You bite, you chew, and this dark, lush, and, yes, dangerous elixir washes over the mouth , the senses swim, reaching and grasping for adequate words to describe the experience, yet always wanting. Alcohol is sharp and stinging, always present, always snaking itself up and in and "Drunkening". Malt is massive in this mammoth stout, providing thick flavor and booze, glorious booze. I can't detect a stitch of hops anywhere. So who needs 'em, Mac?
"How dry I am...how dry I am..nobody knows...how dry I--HIC!"
Tiny sips, brother, tiny sips, there's no guzzling allowed with this monster, unless you're some kind of maniacal masochist.
I had to take the drinkability factor way down because there's no way you can have more than one, unless you have a death wish.
I wish, I wish, I wish this came in tiny bottles and was a hell of a lot cheaper. That'd make a nice, lovely nightcap. I wish, I wish...yeah, all those wishes and a magic wand will grant me world peace and a date with Salma Hayek...
Oh!What!A!Beer!...Time for beddy bye, y'all!
Oh...this is lovely...yum..snzzzz..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The beer pours a deep black color with a spotty tan lace head. The aroma is good. It has a rich black malt scent which is overpowered by a warm alcohol aroma; very nice. The taste is great. It has real good dark malt flavor that goes down easy for a super high abv. stout. It finishes like cough syrup, but no other stout compares. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation for a high abv. beer. Dogfish Head knows how to push the envelope in brewing. They are constantly coming up with new ideas that continue to impress. Great job guys!

2008 vintage WWS poured into a snifter. There is almost no head, and what little head there is is next to the walls of the glass. No lacing and its hard to tell the carbonation level due to the darkness. Oh yeah, this beer is dark, not pitch black but no light gets through. At the corners of the glass you can see some dark red / brown so its not completely black, just really dark.

Smell is complex and wonderful. Sweet molasses, raisins, brandy, alcohol but not solvent, maybe a little roast. The smell sets you up nicely for the flavors. I can taste the alcohol (I would imagine if I would actually let this age this would be improved). There is some roast / coffee flavors in there as well. Not a lot in the way of hop bitterness but that's OK. There is some roast in a very mild aftertaste. A good tasting high ABV beer.

Mouthfeel is fine drinkability is surprisingly high for an 18% ABV beer.

Thanks to hudsonphotog for sharing this bottle. I have been wanting to try this for a while and it didn't disappoint.

Bottled 11-17-2009. The beer pours dark brown with a tan head. The aroma is great with dark fruit, alcohol and chocolate. The flavor is even more complex with dark fruit, roasted malt chocolate, coffee, a little smoke and alcohol. Even though you can taste the alcohol, you wouldn't know it was 18 percent. The beer is very sweet overall. Medium-thick mouthfeel and low carbonation. I think this is quite a bit better than the other three high alcohol Dogfish Head beers I have tried: 120 Minute, Fort and Raison de Extra.

A - Poured out a dark black color with ruby highlights. It had a small, but very bubbly, tan head. It left sheets of soapy residue on the glass.

S - It smelled like a good brandy. Some sweet and boozy alcohol aromas, too.

T - It had a brandy-like taste with a very sweet roasted malty flavor. Light chocolate and caramel flavors blend with a sharp hop bite.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a smooth finish. A full-bodied beer.

D - This tastes amazing, but the ABV is too much to handle.

A: The beer is jet black in color and poured with a thin mocha head that quickly faded away, leaving a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass and some lacing in the center.
S: The smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up and has aromas of alcohol, licorice, molasses and raisins.
T: The taste shares similarities with the smell and has flavors of alcohol, raisins and roasted malts with a mild amount of sweetness.
M: It feels full-bodied and very viscous on the palate with a light amount of carbonation. There is a slight amount of dryness and warming from the alcohol is very evident in the finish.
D: Considering the strength of the beer, it isn't overly difficult to drink because a good portion of the alcohol content is masked from the smell and taste.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of dark chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts with rich roasted malts up front, followed by background flavors of dark chocolate and dark fruits. Between the age, the high alcohol and heavy maltiness, whatever hops had been there have faded significantly. The alcohol stings at times but not as strongly as I had expected from a beer at 18.00% ABV. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, heavy body, light carbonation, finish is sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down dangerously easily, slightly filling, obviously there's a very strong kick, very good representation of style and specifically the bigger end of the of the big stout spectrum, this definitely a good strong sipper beer but you still have to be careful with it.

Major appreciation to Ddarden for this!! Pours an efferevescent mahogany/jet black with 1 finger of brown sand colored head in to my Donnersburger goblet. Spotty lacing & good head retention considering the abv

S: Cakey, plummy & ruch choclate up front. Booze surfaces as this warms, go figure...

T: Bitter chocolate, roasted grain & oakyness. Warming booze & raisins are there as this warms. I pick up sherry, Christmas pudding & dryness. Fishises warming, oaky, chocolatey rich & and complex

MF: Thick & oily, plus low/low carbonation. Something tho chew on

Drinks a bit ponderous. But one you could probably lay down for years & years then you'll get sublime drinkability. Another candiate for tripple stout IMO

I had picked up a bottle of this a while ago and wanted to try it. I gave it a whirl and thought that it was very good overall. The flavors were rich and the color was perfectly dark for this style of beer. The mouthfeel and everything was enjoyable as well. I'd say it was worthy of at least an B+.

A little while the Spinnertown Hotel had this on tap strapped up to the Randall. They had espresso beans infused with brandy, extra hops, and a few other things the waitress mentioned. I ordered a glass and it was brought out with no head but as het black as could be. There were some espresso bean flakes or hop particals floating on top. The smell was stunning. I just held it under my nose for a while before drinking it. There was coffee and chocolate to the fullest, there was hops and brandy and so much more on the nose. The taste was unexplainable. It just didn't compare to the original at all anymore. It was just so good though. The mouthfeel was thick and syrupy. Overall it was fantastic to me. It makes me want to try everything through the Randall now.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours brown/black with a minimal tan head, an imposing looking beverage.

S: Pungent notes of coffee, sweet brown sugar, malt and definite ethanol.

T: Heavy dark chocolate and coffee. Licorice and oak tannin as well. Sweeter than I expected, no real roast flavours. Definite ethanol with a mild burn. Big flavours.

M: Smooth, warming, thick, though the carbonation is a tad fizzy.

D: I'm glad I finally got to try a full bottle of this legendary stout. I wasn't as blown away as I thought I would be, but I still enjoyed it.

Broke down and spent the $7.99 for a 12 oz. bottle. Let it warm up a bit and poured it into a wide chalis. It was black with barely any head except for spotty residue. Expected this with the higher alcohol content. The aroma is wonderful, candy sweet with licorice tones. You are warned of the high alcohol level through the nose.

The flavor is complex. Malt levels are huge making this very sweet. Other flavors I picked out were coffee, licorice, honey, prunes, and chocolate. Very smooth mouthfeel, almost creamy. Thick bodied and alcohol level is very noticeable. Drinkability is down a notch due to the high alcohol levels. This is a special occasion type of beer, and it will take a while to finish. I was still trying to understand the flavors I was experiencing all the way through the last drop.

The smell is of sweetened dark fruits - prunes and raisins especially - with chocolate and espresso. Alcohol notes rise to give it a warming effect - almost covering some of the flavor, but held in check. A powerful, rich aroma.

VERY very malty. Sweet dark fruits and grain (The label says "a ridiculous amount of barley" - It's true. Sweet chocolate and coffee notes along with caramel mix in. Very complex. If you're looking for hops - well, look elsewhere - minimal here - if at all. A powerful spicy, sharp alcohol presence makes itself well-known, especially in the finish.

Alcohol is certainly noticeable in the feel. In fact, to me - it almost wiped away the aftertaste for a moment. It is creamy and rich, though sharp.

Certainly a "sipper" - and a slow one at that. It does taste good and is powerful. My main issue with it is that the alcohol presence is more than it needs to be, IMO. I enjoyed other high alcohol beers (and some I didn't), but this one almost wrecked what is a delicious brew. Still in all, it's amazing. Is it worth $9? Well, to try once (and maybe once more with a friend or two) - certainly. But, even if I had a ton of money - which I don't - I don't know that I would by this often at all - It pushes the envelop with over-the-top. Glad I got to try it though! - Had an enjoyable almost two hours with it!

This beer pours a solid brownish black, with a thin wisp of beige soapsudsy head, and no lace. It smells of chocolate biscuit, alcohol, ash, and herbal green hops. The taste is alcohol, milk chocolate, sweet, spicy stewed fruit, Turkish delight, and earthy, sweet citrus hops. The carbonation is mild, the body full, creamy, warm, and smooth, and it has a sweet, boozy, chocolate candy finish.

A melange of weird and wonderful flavours, all catalyzed by the big alcohol. Took me 90 minutes to sip whilst standing at the bar - hmmm, wrong beer name...
