American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (2917), on-tap (337), growler (31), cask (10), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

Bottled 2.5 months ago (1/10/2013). Bought in Whole Foods @ Santa Monica, California

Beautiful clear copper. In the nose, strong caramel flavors, with hop flavors barely noticeable. There is some orange marmalade. Quite full-bodied and sweet. I think the hop flavors have receded after these two months and I feel it's unfair to review it based on such an old bottle. However, this is what was available to me at the store, so others may find it in the same condition. It's still pleasant and balanced, just lacks the fresh hop flavor I was expecting. Probably closer to a Scotch Ale at this point, with its caramel dominance. Drinkability is high, alcohol doesn't stand out.

About 1 month old bottle

Pours a brilliant orange with minimal head. Recedes quickly to a thin cap which hangs around awhile.

Smell is not unpleasant, but not very IPA-ish. Bready, warming malt profile like a good helles bock. The problem here is that it is not a helles bock. Where are the hops?

Taste is a bit more on course. Slight piney hop bitterness, but predominantly malt on the tongue.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard. Move along.

Idk if I got a bad bottle or if DFH just missed the mark, bit I'm disappointed. Not a bad tasting beer b any means which is why I gave it a 3.5, but definitely off style.

A-slighty darker than the average "pale ale"
S-not a very pungent smell, but pretty fruity or forward aroma
T-almost citrusy undertones, forward in flavor but nothing in comparison to most pale ales... not nearly as hoppy, but it has a slightly rich flavor while keeping it very fresh
M-very carbonated, but amazingly light on the tongue for its pungent, yet not overpoweringly flavor
O-this beer is fucking fantastic, for real. I'm not a huge fan of most pale ales, but this taste is almost a mixture between a pale ale and a darker beer. The flavor is robust, but not heavy. I was amazed as to how light it was, yet still having all of that flavor! Great choice.... even on a Monday like this one!

A-pours a deep red/golden color with a creamy 1 finger head. Coats the entire glass as I sip. A beautiful IPA.

S-Very malty, nutty with a hop presence in the back of the nose. Exceptional smell. By far the best nose on an IPA I've smelled

T-nutty, sweet, malty, hops on the back of the palate. Very smooth and forgiving. The most easy drinking and tamed IPA I've had.

MF-smooth, creamy, very drinkable. Absolutely exceptional.

O-Holy hell. The best IPA I've ever had. Very unique. There aren't typical overpowering notes of citrus and pine in the nose or taste. This is a very unique beer. World-class.

Pours out in a clear ruby, amber color with a one finger head. A bit of lacing with/

The aroma is great. Big biscuit malt with a sweet fruitiness like strawberries. Almost perfume like. Definitely one of the more malty smelling DIPAs I’ve smelled. Not very citrusy.

The first flavor is a grapefruit bite. Then there’s pineyness and a bit of grass.

Then the beer is quite malty and the crystal malt in there reminds me a lot of Nugget Nectar. However, instead of just the sweet crystal malt linger, there’s a slight bitterness that cleans the beer up. This really does what I want Nugget to do. The huge amount of crystal malt is quite lovely here.

In general, this is quite nice. I had Enjoy By the night before and I would drink this more frequently. It isn’t a hop bomb, but more of a balanced malty beer. Not to say that this doesn’t have wonderful complexity with its hop bitterness and crystal malt.

12 oz. bottle

A: A nice dark amber with a nice 3 inch head that quickly withers to a film. Extremely tiny bubbles rise out of nowhere.

S: A much heavier, almost dark smell. It smells like roasted pines and tart lemon juice concentrate, with a bit of lime.

T: Tastes like it smells. Citrus and piney going down. It has an aftertaste that quickly recedes, but pops back now and again.

M: Very smooth, that goes down easy with a little bit of carbonation on the end.

O: The 90 minute was one of the first beers I had and back then I had hated it. I don't know if it was a change in palate (but I did like IPAs back then), or if it was just an old/skunked beer. However, I had one last night at a party and loved it, and so I saved one to review tonight. It is a great IPA, especially with its wide and yearly availability. It is quite strong, but not as hop forward as I remember. This beer is extremely well-balanced, with a neat profile.

p.s. My mouth might have been picking up the smells and tastes of the roasted brussel sprouts I had just cooked and eaten. However, I did have bread before I drank it.

Pour from the bottle into a tulip.

Look: A nice amber color with a one finger head. Perfect lacing throughout, that I was really impressed with

Smell: A powerful hop aroma accompanied by small notes of floral and citrus. For some reason I'm also picking up a bit of honey I think. Great scent that lingers throughout.

Taste: Extremely well balanced. I thought I was going to be attacked by the hops, but the malt kicks in and makes for some great chemistry.

Mouthfeel: A bit slick, which for myself is off putting, but the carbonation level makes up for it and keeps it light.

Overall: I'm just starting to get into the variety of IPAs out there, and I really enjoyed this one. It was a bummer that it was only a four pack, but this one will be my measuring stick until I find something better. This was a fun experience.

On tap at the The Loft on the LMU Campus
a- golden, no head
s- a little malty and a little hoppy
t- cool sparky taste thats bubbly and sharp. Very hoppy and bitter but only lasts a second, which makes it half cool. Disguises the alcohol fairly well and minimal lingering bitterness.
m- its got a hard alcohol feel to it. Not very smooth.
o- Ultimately, no floral/ piny/ citrus notes. Which is the only reason why I hunt for IPAs. Not bad if you want a heavy alcohol beer with limited aftertaste.

Bottle poured into Hill Farmstead tulip.

A: Clear caramel color with a clean look. One finger head that receded quickly. Good lacing and a nice look.

S: This is where this one misses a little for me. Wanted more hops, but they take a back seat to a more malty front. I had to search for the hop scent I was looking for.

T: The theme continued here. More malt with nice hop presence taking a back seat. The finish here was the best part for me. Nice bitter taste lingers on the back of the tounge.

M: I enjoyed the mouthfeel. A little thinner than I like, but crisp with good carbonation.

O: I really enjoyed this one, but prefer the west coast citrus hop bombers over these more malty brews. This one reminded me of the Apex I tried recently only better. I get why people love it and it was enjoyed, but maybe just not my go to style.

A brisk pour produces a light to moderate foam that is white with great sheets of lacing.

A subdued nose, not what I was expecting with citrus peel and pine.

The taste explodes despite the nose with citrus hop and some resinous pine. The juicy citrus lingers on the finish. Not too bitter and there's a heavy caramel biscuit malt flavor backing up the hops. Full flavor with well hidden alcohol.

Mouthfeel is full with fine carbonation.

Overall a beautiful hop bomb that does not shred the taste buds.

Served on tap at the Ginger Man in South Norwalk CT.

Pours amber colored. Some foam rings around. Lighter on top. Can see through. Very faint smell, tough to pick up much. Hops if anything. All hop bitter taste - hard and long lasting. Some balance, but struggles to hold it. Juicy at first. Not sure this is better than the 60.

One hell of an imperial IPA. Great savory taste, has an extreme hop profile that would satisfy any hop fanatic. Raisins, stone fruit, lemons on the nose. Tastes exquisite, like a dry spring filled with bitter wildflowers. Yeah, I just said that. Drink this now.

Orange to light amber in appearance the head was stiff and frothy.

Malt and floral hop nose create a backbone to levels of fruit. Watermelon scents are strong with touches of lemon. Brewed tea scents are created by the malts and grain to give the scent a stronger body.

Strong malts for an IPA I catch a ton of bitter hops in the aftertaste. No piney hops but strong hoppy bitterness, this is unlike most DIPAs. I really like the stronger sweet malt body as its offset by the hops.

The label speaks of ridiculous amounts of English barley and its reflected in the taste and body. More English Pale Ale character but true American DIPA feel this is a really fine beer.

Bottled 4 pack. Light amber, clear beer has lacy thinnish head. Hoppy and malty nose: wine gums, floral notes, watermelon, strawberry, some citrus. Caramel-topped maltiness with some biscuity toastedness. Intensly malty and thick, still not too sweeet. Light dryfruit notes. Strong but really round bitterness. Amazingly smooth palate, full body. Delicious DIPA.

At my local grocery store chain, this is the best thing going. Since I drink from the bottle, I rate the bottle's appearance and not the beer's, and there's nothing special about this bottle. It smells a little better than average, but for me one of the best things about IPA's is their smell and this one doesn't wow me.
It seems fairly tame for an IPA; no "grapefruit blast" or whatever. I like my IPA's to taste like pine sap on steroids, but this one is fairly mild. Has a good mouthfeel with the right amount of carbonation to keep things interesting.
Like I said, better than most, but IMHO, not good enough to be great.

Appearance: A dark orange amber color with a thick creamy white head and a good
amount of lace.

Smell: A full, bright, citric hops with a sweet caramel malt mixed in. A deep orange, grapefruit, and apricot smell.

Taste: A real good mix of citric hops, bitterness and sweet caramel malts. The flavor I get the most is caramel malt and pine.

Mouthfeel: Full body and creamy with a little carbonation. Mellow finish.

Overall: A very balanced and drinkable double IPA. More on the malt end. A good
anytime beer but maybe more of a winter beer because of its heavier body.

Lots of other reviews to read if you want repetitive descriptions of appearance, aroma and flavor: no offense intended to the truly knowledgable reviewers on this site. This was the first of the BA "world-class" rated beers that seemed simply overrated for my liking.

I realize Esquire mag rated/reviewed this brew off the charts (as blatently advertised on the pricey 4 pack), and BA also thinks quite highly of this DIPA, but for my taste, it was an out and out "malt bomb" with a restrained, bland hop flavor. I found this DIPA a chore to get through the 12 oz bottle with an aftertaste that reminded me of cough syrup.

Once again, super high ratings have the ability to raise expectations. There are clearly many that feel this DIPA is worthy of ultra high marks, and I'm certainly not telling other people what to enjoy or not to enjoy: it only goes to show there are different likes and dislikes for every beer. If your tastes lean toward an aggresively malty DIPA this will be a winner for you, and for those seeking complex citrus hop flavors....meh! Easily the most overrated beer for my taste so far,and a ton of choices in the $10-$11 4 pack selections.

This is more of the same as their 60 minute ipa. Very average, odd toasty biscuit malt, bland hop bitterness. I was very excited to try dogfish head beers so I picked some up on a trip to Maryland. Their are much better ipa's from the area to be had.

Bottle dated 1/3/13, 2 months old.

A: Pours a clear ruby red. Good sized frothy tan head. Fades away slowly, leaving quite an island of foam. Decent spotty fluffy bits of lacing here and there.

S: Really nice grapefruit aroma with lots of caramel to sweeten it up. Hints of tropical fruit and resinous pine. Kinda had a sweetbread type of aroma.

T: Again, lots of caramel mixing in with lots of hops. Tropical fruit is stronger here with bunches of pine. I may have been mistaken on the grapefruit, not picking up any here. The caramel in this is really wonderful - it sets it apart. Again, a sort of a sweetbread flavor mixing in with all the caramel. Maybe even get some honey in here? Very nice and strong sweet malt backbone backing up the hoppiness. The sweetness runs out in the finish and you're left with just tropical fruit, pine and resin. Fairly bitter but not overpowering. Great flavors.

M: Medium bodied, slick, a bit oily especially in the finish. Mouthcoating hop oils.

O: This is one hell of a DIPA. It's very hoppy but not overpowering and is surprisingly balanced. The sweet caramel and honey flavors in this really sets it apart. Great compliment to the bitter hop flavors and serves to accentuate them rather than fight them. Very balanced and super drinkable DIPA. One of the best balanced all-around versions you can find.

Poured great, decent head. Honey colored beer. Rich look, even richer full body taste. Poured with a nice head. While an awesome full body beer, it did not leave you feeling like you drank something heavy and did not leave you bloated allowing you to enjoy more. At 9% you get a nice little kick. This is a great beer to have with dinner or just to sit down and enjoy a few. I would be hard pressed to think of a better beer. A must for all real beer aficionados. Enjoy! I probably would drink it all the time if it was just a little lower in price but still very reasonably priced for a beer in this category of this magnitude. My first 5!!!

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: I went into this not expecting much of a head. At 9% alcohol its usually a bit thin, not much of a surprise then that the head wasn't that big. However, what film stays behind looks good. The beer is crystal clear very light orange, golden hues.

S: The smell is intoxicating. Slams you with both caramel sweetness, resin and some tropical hops all at once. I really like the way the caramel malt smells here. Sometimes its a little too over the top and stands out in a bad way. Here it works so well with the hops. It smells like its melted caramel drizzled over a delicious loaf of bread. The hops are there but blend so well into the malt its almost seamless. I can't tell if i really smell fruity hops or if its just the sweetness from the malt. Definitely resiny hops.

T: Taste is still really good, but doesn't quite live up to the hype of the aroma. That delicious bread sweetness is a little too dominated by the hops. It makes the taste a little more one dimensional than the aroma. Piney, resiny hops are super dominant. Huge bitter punch. It does have flavor though. Some DIPAs forgo flavor for IBU's this manages to do both.

M: Carbonation is fairly high, accentuates the hop sting but helps to clean the palate of all the intense flavors. So, well done. Body is light, which is a huge part in why this beer is so good. That sweetness that makes the aroma/taste good would be ruined if the beer was heavy.

O: An excellent DIPA. There is always room for improvement, but this beer is one of the best examples of the style. It's no surprise that its one of the most popular DIPAs.
