Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (2907), on-tap (336), growler (31), cask (10), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

From the total wine growler station today

Pours a dark gold with two fingers of foam that have kept excellent retention . Good transparency, little carbonation, some good lacing. Smells of hops, citrus, strong malts, and some alcohol. Some pine and peach come through also. Taste follows the nose well, hops, very sweet malts, citrus undertones and floral notes. A little bit of booze, but the sugar is what really jumps out and hangs around. The feel is medium bodied and creamy. The sweetness really hurts the drinkability, also really cuts into the bitterness. The liter I have of it might be a little much

Overall this stuff is well made but I wouldn't care for it often, just too sweet

Served in a tulip.

Appearance: Copper with ruby highlights. Medium-coarse, off-white head. Head dissipates quickly, no lacing.

Aroma: More caramel than bready notes compared to 60 min. Ethanol, light citrus/spicy hop aroma dominates. Some woody, vanilla, barrel-like notes are barely perceptible. Perhaps some apricot in the back of the nose. Aroma much sweeter when compared to 60 min.

Flavor: Malt up front, yeilds to hop bitterness but ebb and flow present in 60 min is not present. Malt is not bready, much more caramel sweet, but not quite "raisin-like" sweetness. Hops are very firm (bitter throughout taste) and resinous bitters linger. Presence of alcohol is unquestionable. There are no barrel-like flavors, as noted in the nose.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium carbonation (although I'd prefer a bit more carb for this). Alcohol bite in finish and resinous bitter remains for quite some time.

Overall. Definitely not just a bigger version of 60 min. More caramel malt and hop dynamic is not present but is compensated by the bump in ABV while keeping an appropriate balance. Perhaps a bit hyped, but a solid IPA. Definitely preferred over 60 min if I had the choice. Malt is showcased more here compared to the 60 min where the hops are the centerpiece.

Had not had this in years. Tasted better then I remember it.
I am not huge into over the top hoppy beers, but really enjoyed it. It really mellowed pleasantly after a few minutes, not sure if it was from oxygen or cooling a bit. True to the style. Overall it is a great beer.

I had the joy of trying this beer at a friend's wedding. Normally, I seek out darker beers but I followed some suggestions and opened one of these. I was pleasantly surprised. This beer pours a wonderful amber color, hazy in composition with a bit of sediment through out. On the nose, I pick up floral and sweet scents and the taste follows suit. It delivers the typical bitterness of an IPA but pairs it with some sweet notes. As someone who is not traditionally an IPA lover, I can say I'd buy this one again.

A: Amber with a medium, slightly bubbly head. Carbonation is very visible in spite of the darker color of the beer. Pretty normal.

S: Sort of a grassy / floral type of smell. The hops are definitely there, but don't come through nearly as strong as you'd think for a double-IPA. Most IPAs I've had have a powerful, hoppy aroma, but this one is rather understated.

T: Very nice, complex taste. Again, the hops are there, but defintely not overpowering like you might expect. They are balanced by a sweetness -- honey or caramel or something similar -- that comes through slightly stronger than the hops. There is also again some grassy / floral type of flavor.

M: Interesting mouthfeel. It is probably medium in terms of thickness, but has a viscous, almost sticky quality to it, which is unique out of the beers I have tried. The carbonation is noticeable.

O: Very nice beer. Surprisingly sweet and not as hoppy or bitter as you might expect for a double-IPA, but it works very nice overall, along with a unique mouthfeel. I'm not sure that I found it quite as amazing as listed here, but there isn't' much to knock about it either.

poured into a st. bernardus chalice.

A: nice copper hue. clear, tiny bubbles rising up. half a finger of white foamy head. nice lacing.

S: piney hops are overwhelming. honey. bready malts. one of the finest smelling beers i've ever come across.

T: piney hops right up front are powerful. honey, syrupy sweetness. bread. strong malt backbone.

M: syrupy, sticky. balanced, smooth. excellent carbonation. hops lead to a dry finish.

O: definitive of the style. very well balanced. hops are the cornerstone. one of my favorite double ipas. one of my favorite beers.

Pretty disappointed with this one. Not sure why its rated so high on this website. Not only is it "not special"at all but its kinda a lame beer. Very rarely do I completely dislike a beer but this beer was simply dislikable. Perhaps my expectations were too high but this did not taste like a premium beer.

Honestly do not get why this is rated so well. I think in 2013 there are plenty of better choices out there!!! Boozy tasting, not complex at all. The best thing about this beer is the look and mouth feel ! The smell is just not anything to be excited about.

I've had several ipa's and this one takes the cake. Not extremely bitter, but just enough to give it that classic ipa taste. After watching Brewmasters on tv, I was anxious to try this beer and wanted to see if it could live up to the hype. Without a doubt this beer is worth all attention it has recieved!

This is one of the best beers I've ever had. I first tried in 2004, and have enjoyed it ever since. You just can't go wrong with a Dogfish Head brew. The 90 Minute IPA is the perfect blend of hops and malt. It gives you a great bite and a smooth finish. Recommended for everyone who wants to drink a good beer.

I’ve been into craft beer for many years now, and am surprised it took me so long to try a beer this popular. I’m glad I did, because this exceeded my expectations based on its BA score.

Appearance – Pours a clear orange amber color with a creamy thick head and light spotted lacing.

Smell –At first I noticed some very nice maltiness, which is not typical for a DIPA – but I like it! A light floral smell, with pine and honey… a great hop scent! Better than most of the California hop bombs I’m used to.

Taste – Malt, pine, honey and a very nice hop flavor. I like that’s it doesn’t have an overpowering hoppiness to it.

Mouthfeel – Lightly carbonated, very smooth, and slightly oily – in a good way. A quick hint of the 9%abv in the aftertaste, then it's gone.

Drinkability – Definitely one of the top IPAs I’ve had. Not overly hoppy, not overpowered by citrus, and includes some malt that I really like. Very well done!

This is my favorite Dogfish to date; the one that suits my tastes above the rest of their fleet.

It pours dark amber. Very appealing and thick. The head is fruity and bitter at first sniff. Notes of pungent hops are on full display. The taste resembles more over-the-top IPAs, but with a balanced complexity and smooth finish.

This beer is an outstanding choice for those that feel the Dogfish 75 min IPA was lacking potency.

poured from a bottle into a snifter glass.

A- one finger of bubbly white head. a nice orange reddish body. crystal clear with lots of active carbonation.

S- a total mix of caramelly malt and herbal hops. it's rather pungent but not totally pleasant. maybe just confusing to my senses.

T- that is exactly what a double IPA is supposed to taste like. It's a hop bomb, it's bitter, it's a crash course in citrus vs. herbal, but a slight amount of malty stickiness is left on the teeth.

M- It's very spritzy. it's semi dry. medium to medium-light bodied.

O- Not a bad DIPA at all, but not my favorite. The color and taste were perfect, but I really would have enjoyed it more if the aroma was a little more defined and the mouth feel was a little softer.

Bottled 2.5 months ago (1/10/2013). Bought in Whole Foods @ Santa Monica, California

Beautiful clear copper. In the nose, strong caramel flavors, with hop flavors barely noticeable. There is some orange marmalade. Quite full-bodied and sweet. I think the hop flavors have receded after these two months and I feel it's unfair to review it based on such an old bottle. However, this is what was available to me at the store, so others may find it in the same condition. It's still pleasant and balanced, just lacks the fresh hop flavor I was expecting. Probably closer to a Scotch Ale at this point, with its caramel dominance. Drinkability is high, alcohol doesn't stand out.

About 1 month old bottle

Pours a brilliant orange with minimal head. Recedes quickly to a thin cap which hangs around awhile.

Smell is not unpleasant, but not very IPA-ish. Bready, warming malt profile like a good helles bock. The problem here is that it is not a helles bock. Where are the hops?

Taste is a bit more on course. Slight piney hop bitterness, but predominantly malt on the tongue.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard. Move along.

Idk if I got a bad bottle or if DFH just missed the mark, bit I'm disappointed. Not a bad tasting beer b any means which is why I gave it a 3.5, but definitely off style.

A-slighty darker than the average "pale ale"
S-not a very pungent smell, but pretty fruity or forward aroma
T-almost citrusy undertones, forward in flavor but nothing in comparison to most pale ales... not nearly as hoppy, but it has a slightly rich flavor while keeping it very fresh
M-very carbonated, but amazingly light on the tongue for its pungent, yet not overpoweringly flavor
O-this beer is fucking fantastic, for real. I'm not a huge fan of most pale ales, but this taste is almost a mixture between a pale ale and a darker beer. The flavor is robust, but not heavy. I was amazed as to how light it was, yet still having all of that flavor! Great choice.... even on a Monday like this one!

A-pours a deep red/golden color with a creamy 1 finger head. Coats the entire glass as I sip. A beautiful IPA.

S-Very malty, nutty with a hop presence in the back of the nose. Exceptional smell. By far the best nose on an IPA I've smelled

T-nutty, sweet, malty, hops on the back of the palate. Very smooth and forgiving. The most easy drinking and tamed IPA I've had.

MF-smooth, creamy, very drinkable. Absolutely exceptional.

O-Holy hell. The best IPA I've ever had. Very unique. There aren't typical overpowering notes of citrus and pine in the nose or taste. This is a very unique beer. World-class.

Pours out in a clear ruby, amber color with a one finger head. A bit of lacing with/

The aroma is great. Big biscuit malt with a sweet fruitiness like strawberries. Almost perfume like. Definitely one of the more malty smelling DIPAs I’ve smelled. Not very citrusy.

The first flavor is a grapefruit bite. Then there’s pineyness and a bit of grass.

Then the beer is quite malty and the crystal malt in there reminds me a lot of Nugget Nectar. However, instead of just the sweet crystal malt linger, there’s a slight bitterness that cleans the beer up. This really does what I want Nugget to do. The huge amount of crystal malt is quite lovely here.

In general, this is quite nice. I had Enjoy By the night before and I would drink this more frequently. It isn’t a hop bomb, but more of a balanced malty beer. Not to say that this doesn’t have wonderful complexity with its hop bitterness and crystal malt.

12 oz. bottle

A: A nice dark amber with a nice 3 inch head that quickly withers to a film. Extremely tiny bubbles rise out of nowhere.

S: A much heavier, almost dark smell. It smells like roasted pines and tart lemon juice concentrate, with a bit of lime.

T: Tastes like it smells. Citrus and piney going down. It has an aftertaste that quickly recedes, but pops back now and again.

M: Very smooth, that goes down easy with a little bit of carbonation on the end.

O: The 90 minute was one of the first beers I had and back then I had hated it. I don't know if it was a change in palate (but I did like IPAs back then), or if it was just an old/skunked beer. However, I had one last night at a party and loved it, and so I saved one to review tonight. It is a great IPA, especially with its wide and yearly availability. It is quite strong, but not as hop forward as I remember. This beer is extremely well-balanced, with a neat profile.

p.s. My mouth might have been picking up the smells and tastes of the roasted brussel sprouts I had just cooked and eaten. However, I did have bread before I drank it.

Pour from the bottle into a tulip.

Look: A nice amber color with a one finger head. Perfect lacing throughout, that I was really impressed with

Smell: A powerful hop aroma accompanied by small notes of floral and citrus. For some reason I'm also picking up a bit of honey I think. Great scent that lingers throughout.

Taste: Extremely well balanced. I thought I was going to be attacked by the hops, but the malt kicks in and makes for some great chemistry.

Mouthfeel: A bit slick, which for myself is off putting, but the carbonation level makes up for it and keeps it light.

Overall: I'm just starting to get into the variety of IPAs out there, and I really enjoyed this one. It was a bummer that it was only a four pack, but this one will be my measuring stick until I find something better. This was a fun experience.

a- golden, no head
s- a little malty and a little hoppy
t- cool sparky taste thats bubbly and sharp. Very hoppy and bitter but only lasts a second, which makes it half cool. Disguises the alcohol fairly well and minimal lingering bitterness.
m- its got a hard alcohol feel to it. Not very smooth.
o- Ultimately, no floral/ piny/ citrus notes. Which is the only reason why I hunt for IPAs. Not bad if you want a heavy alcohol beer with limited aftertaste.

Bottle poured into Hill Farmstead tulip.

A: Clear caramel color with a clean look. One finger head that receded quickly. Good lacing and a nice look.

S: This is where this one misses a little for me. Wanted more hops, but they take a back seat to a more malty front. I had to search for the hop scent I was looking for.

T: The theme continued here. More malt with nice hop presence taking a back seat. The finish here was the best part for me. Nice bitter taste lingers on the back of the tounge.

M: I enjoyed the mouthfeel. A little thinner than I like, but crisp with good carbonation.

O: I really enjoyed this one, but prefer the west coast citrus hop bombers over these more malty brews. This one reminded me of the Apex I tried recently only better. I get why people love it and it was enjoyed, but maybe just not my go to style.

A brisk pour produces a light to moderate foam that is white with great sheets of lacing.

A subdued nose, not what I was expecting with citrus peel and pine.

The taste explodes despite the nose with citrus hop and some resinous pine. The juicy citrus lingers on the finish. Not too bitter and there's a heavy caramel biscuit malt flavor backing up the hops. Full flavor with well hidden alcohol.

Mouthfeel is full with fine carbonation.

Overall a beautiful hop bomb that does not shred the taste buds.

Pours amber colored. Some foam rings around. Lighter on top. Can see through. Very faint smell, tough to pick up much. Hops if anything. All hop bitter taste - hard and long lasting. Some balance, but struggles to hold it. Juicy at first. Not sure this is better than the 60.
