American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (2917), on-tap (337), growler (31), cask (10), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream...90 minute on cask at ashley's in ann arbor. My mouth is still watering thinking of that glorious day I had this. 90 minute is one of the most drinkable and delicious widely distributed beers in the country and having it on cask is just a heavenly experience.

I had this at the General Sutter Inn in Lititz PA. Served at cask temp in a nonic

A - Very clear medium dark amber w/ weak pale head, no lacing and looks basically uncarbonated

S - Sweet malt aroma w/ high tart amarilllo sour citrus scent. The odor is moderately high of alcohol and he hops are not as pungent as expected but nice scent overall

M - I got the fruitiness and sweet malt in the feel w/ intense bite of bitterness and alcohol simultaneously w/ a residual sweet texture and juicy hop finish

T - Sweet - high amount of sweetness w/ the two row evident in the taste w/ a mild nutty toasted malt taste. The flavor is almost more like a barleywine until a citrusy amarillo and lemony hop flavor w/ sour oranges and mild sweet taste eases in. The malt is candy-like w/ tangerines and tangy notes w/ a boozy flavor that lasts into the finish

D - A drinkable Imperial IPA, especially on cask, but it seems stronger and more intense, not the same beer as in the bottle at all. I hope to have it on cask again to compare, but a great experience that seems to expose how malty the beer really is. Just a bit over the top for everday drinking or to be social. I would probably have ordered only a half pint next time - strength and acidity are too much for my taste this way.

Once again, UKBrewing (Paul Pendyck) hosted a blast of a Cask Night on F, 30 Jan 2009 following a two-month Holiday Hiatus. Always a treat!

A finger of soapy, foamy head upon presentation. Color was a slightly cloudy orangish-amber. Nose was MUCH pine-ier than the previous DFH 60" which I had just finished. Now, we're talkin'! The touch of this liquid to my tongue was that of an iron fist enrobed in velvet. A soft stroking motion followed by a studded punch of mail. Yoi! It was even silkier than the 60", but the hops were NOT playing around. LOTS o' hops just simply assaulting my poor, defenseless taste buds which hadn't done anything to incur this sort of wrath.

Now cue a quote from Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist": "More, please, sir." "MORE?!? You want MORE!?!" it seemed to roar back at me.

I could merely gently nod as the tears openly rolled down my cheeks and my breath came in raspy gasps. Say, bartender ...

Finish? I was finished. Ask any of the other Cask Night attendees.

Cask Night saw it return several months later and this is what I wrote on that occasion:

It was on gravity-pour this night so its head was just foam that de-ceded into nothingness, just a ring around the circumference. My glass evinced the deepest, clearest amber this side of orange of anything that I tried that evening. Clarity? NE, doubled. Bright! Edison would have wept. Mouthfeel was slightly full with a pronounced heat on the tongue. I started to feel like Goldilocks - one was too mild, this one was too much. Finish was hoppy, but indescribably so - I got bitter, but not in any way that I could pinpoint.

I feel like a waffle - I used to love 60", then I hit upon 90" and now I prefer 75". Small wonder that I am not married.

It poured a thick, cloudy orange and smelled supepr hoppy with a mix of pine and citrus. It was full of body and flavorful. Although it was thick, hoppy, and high in alcohol, it was fairly drinkable. So watch out with these--they'll sneak up on you!

Was at Ashley's in Ann Arbor - they had this AWESOME IIPA hand pulled.

Wow - I was always a fan of it draft and in the bottle, but this was even better than I ever could have imagined.

The warmer temperature brought out much more of the flavor and increased the bitterness.

Nice citrus and a good bite. Balance was very nice. Nice sweet finish with good fruit.

The bottle & draft used to be my favorites for this HUGE beer, but this is a great DIPA.

Tasted on cask(!!) at the BSF bar, GBBF 06. Coz all the other American cask-conditioned beers (30+ of them) failed to arrive in time for the beer festival, due to the unforgivable mistake by the shipping company, this was the only American cask ale available on stillages (two casks in total for the whole event...). But what a beer it was esp. on cask!! Gravity-dispensed.

A: pours a bright, orangey amber hue, very clear and low carbonation; no sign of beer head which is pretty normal for a gravity-poured real ale.
S: flowery essence, like Osmanthus fragrans, mountain-flower honey, juicy but sticky lychee jam, light note of basil leaves, plus a deeper scent of sweet oranges... all elements rolled in one, on top of a great, thick body of caramely maltiness yet without a single trace of sharp alc. for this 9%abv. beer... brilliant!
T: oily smooth in texture, with soothing flows of pine-oil, flowery and sweet grapefruity hops caressing the tongue... In the mid-taste lots of juicy longan-fruits come forward, closely ensued by a profound taste of licorice, dried root-spices and flowery petals, leading towards a balanced, tangy bitter and lo...ng finish with just a healthy kick of alc. down the throat. Hops leave great length of aroma and depth of bitterness at the back, but not at all harsh or intrusive on the mouthfeel as one might suspect of a DIPA. Sheer brilliance~~
M&D: smoothly-textured, the fizziness is much much softer than most American beers I've had, due to the cask-conditioning I'm sure. In a way the taste and aroma are not so much bold and thick as the bottled version, but for any cask-conditioned ale lover, this gem on cask really is unbeatable. Lovely nectar, to say the least... can't have enough of it!!

What's better than 90 minute IPA through the Randall? Why, that would be CASK-CONDITIONED 90 minute IPA through the Randall. I was swimming through layers of herbal, piney, floral hop aromas and flavors with an amazingly balanced sweet malt backbone that had me silenced, but for the sound of purring deep within my bowels. Layer upon layer of hop flavor washing over every millimeter of my mouth. Nothing sharp or harsh about so much hop flavor.

Been drinking this at the Drafting Room/Springhouse. Limited quantities and was waiting not-so-patiently apparently since I got emailed by their manager and bartender as soon as they finally managed to get it and as soon as this puppy was tapped!

This has always been such a great IPA, what a treat to have it casked! Medium golden and somwhat unclear. Such an amazingly thick and creamy white bubble bath of a head on top. Scented lightly of grapefruit. Man, it is sooo silky as allhell! So rich and smooth, but yet not heavy at all. Hoppy and grapefruit rindy, lite citrus. Intense taste, but blended so nicely. Just so freakin' amazing... Perfect temperature. I can sit and just drink tons and tons and tons.... wait, there is not going to be tons of this available in this little freakin cask... crap! Thank god the DR is close to me! Gonna suck this thing dry!

Light copper colored with a big white and lingering lacey head. Distinct hop aroma. Flavor is big hops with lingering bitterness in the back of the mouth. Hops flavor covers the tongue and fills the entire mouth. Well rounded flavor with hints of malt. Very smooth mouthfeel. This is a really enjoyable beer.

Tasted 10-8-02 Monks Dogfish Head Beer/Spirits Dinner.

Frothy white head. Hazy orange color. Murky orange smooth look. Sweet, lemon/orange peel, hop nose. Smooth hop taste with a touch of bitter orange. Stainless cask which is dry hopped with a big bag of hops for one month. Lots of yeast sediment left in the glass. Great mouth. Good but not as solid and rounded as the 60 min.

Poured in draft into snifter.

A: Dark golden color with nice fluffy white head that leaves nice lacing behind.

S: Lots of hops and earthiness mixed with light sweet malts.

T: Pine and citrus flavors from the hops balanced nicely with the richness and sweetness from the malts. This is my kind of IPA. More going on here than just hop bomb.

M: Nice body and good carbonation. Refreshing to drink...

O: Fantasic beer. Makes me reconsider drinking IPA more often.

I don't consider myself a beer reviewer, but I figured I would put down my honest opinion as it seems to be the thing to do. Bear in mind this is my first day on BA.

To be honest I don't care for IPA's, most of the I don't go back for a second one,the only reason I am drinking them regularly these days is in the hope of "refining my palete." That being said I find myself enjoying this beer enough to the point of helping myself to a secnod one.

The main problem I have with most IPA's is they linger to much on my palate with a bitter aftertaste, 60 minute doesn't do that. It's bitter up front then tapers off leaving me wanting another sip.

All in all, I will keep drinking this beer and I think it will make a good stepping stone for me to keep drinking IPA's.

Appearance: Gorgeous amber; clear, effervescent; huge, frothy beige head, long lasting

Aroma: Malt; roasted grains; huge hop aroma with piney resin notes; smells delicious

Taste: Juicy, creamy malt on start that flows to hoppy, grapefruity citrus in the mid; finishes slightly dry; smooth, refreshing, and delicious

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Pours clear and orange amber with a scant finger of loose foam that didn’t last at all. Plenty of active carbonation. Left a thin ring and a small cap. Nose is sweet orange on top of tall bread and caramel. A touch of floral and pine, a little honey and grass. Smells like sugar. The nose on this beer is perfectly sweet and juicy. Taste is piney hops with a bit of oil on a full malt base. Nutty, sweet and floral, somewhat tame. A little sticky and buttery. It’s syrupy in the almost dry finish and it’s pretty sweet. So sweet that you might not realize just how bitter the hops really are until they tickle the back palate with a little oil and bitter. Achieves a smooth balance between all it has to offer from both hops and malt. Polite yet engaging.Very approachable even with the higher abv and was quite charming.

In my opinion this beer is everything I look for.

It poured into a vintage beer mug a beautiful coppery color with a touch of haziness. Best poured cold out of the fridge just to control the super thick wonderful head that just keeps building.

This is a very hop forward beer with a distinct malt backbone. This is a beer made for sipping to savor every drop.

Sip at room temp to catch all of the subtleties in the hops and malts.

To me, I like to sip it in with an equal amount of air like a fine wine, roll it around on my tongue, catching the alcohol the hops and malts, then swallow.

It's a very sexy beer with a taste that lingers on your tongue making your taste buds scream for more. Two a night is my limit, the store can't get enough (three 4 paks at a time) when it comes to 90 minute I'm greedy.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

A - Beautiful! Deep amber with brilliant clarity. Off-white head that lasts and lasts and lasts. Gorgeous lacing to the bottom of the glass.

S - Complex, with some conflicting aromas. Dank hops mixed with sweet orange peel doesn't quite work for me. Sweet honey-like malt aroma. Light alcohol.

T - Nicely balanced. Hop bitterness comes off as moderate, due to the substantial malt backbone. Light toasty malt with some caramel sweetness. Hops comes off as orange lollipop. Somewhat artificial candy-like. Low alcohol sweetness.

M - Medium body, but still has an impression of richness. Creamy, but the hops and alcohol dry the finish nicely.

O - This beer grew on me a bit as it warmed, but was a bit of a letdown from what I expected. The hop profile just didn't do it for me. I prefer the 60 minute!

A- Brilliant dark-gold color- much like foamy apple juice. Can barely see through it on the other end of the glass. Decent head with pretty thick lacing.

S- Very flowery. Extremely hoppy and quite pungent.

T- Floral tasting. Bitter flavors that turn into sweet in about 4 seconds, then leaves you with a pleasant bittersweet after taste. Probably the best IPA I've ever tried, and I don't usually drink them.

M- Bold mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Feels like it belongs!

O- My new favorite IPA! At 9% ABV, I can learn to deal with a 4-pack. :)

Dog Fish Head - Only heard good things about this brewery , had the Midas Touch and really enjoyed it

Appearance - A lovely sparkling gold with hints of ruddy brown. Very nice attractive beer

Smell - Hops, several variety that mixes well. Citrus, earthy, grass and some sweet

Taste - Big bitter hit that mellows to a sweet light malt and then. The after taste is satisfying and complete/complex

Mouthfeel - Great carbonation with right sized head when first poured

Overall - A really excellent brew, great for its style. Even a non hop head like me can enjoy. Now on to the 120.... If I can find it

The cost attracted me to give this a try at $10.99 for a 4-pk. Overall it's a great IPA and it the aftertaste is better than normal. The smell reminds me of fresh cut grass. The taste is a bit bitter at first but evens-out at the end - typical IPA. I think they did well with this! It better than most but you're also paying for it.

Presentation: Very nice label in the traditional DFH style. Label has DFH logo, ABV info, brewery info, and a small description of the beer, Neck label DFH logo and 90Min. Bottled on date (12-17-12).

Appearance: I allowed this to warm for 5min before pouring it from its 12oz bottle into a 16oz snifter. Pours out a semi hazy deep copper color with a 1 finger off white foam head of medium density. Head retention was 2min before fading to a frothy coating and thick ring. Excellent lacing throughout.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of fresh pine hops with a sweet fruity and malty essence.

Flavor/Taste: Taste of extreme pine hop bitterness throughout with hints of sweet malts and a slightly fruity tone. Slight hints of alcohol that was masked very well overall.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with above average carbonation with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Extremely drinkable!.

Overall/Comments: An excellent double IPA that doesn't stray from the path. Extremely well put together with an awesome nose and exceptional flavor profile. Classified as an American Double/Imperial IPA at 9% ABV. Consumed 3/1/13.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into (my new) Dogfish Head snifter.

A: Pours a clear deep amber with 1 finger of frothy, billowy, white head, leaving spotty lacing plentifully along the glass. Head retention is good, aided by a steady stream of bubbles from etching at the base of the glass. Beautiful beer.

S: sweet citrus, like pineapple. Malt, hops, and alcohol follow. Smell makes me worry that the taste may be a little cloying, it's so sweet.

T: Wonderfully balanced sweetness from citrus character and malt balanced against hop bitterness. The taste does not follow the sweetness on the nose nearly as severely as I'd feared. The alcohol on this is wonderfully hidden under strong flavors, but is there all the same.

M: Full, syrupy with hops. A very heavy beer for an IPA, which I quite like. Carbonation is plentiful but not overdone.

O: I never cease to be impressed by this beer. A staple IPA, for sure -- plentifully available, delicious, and inexpensive. This has been a long-standing favorite of mine, and critically revisiting it on the occasion of purchasing this new snifter has reminded me just why I try to keep this on-hand.

Poured out of a 12 oz brown bottle into a large snifter glass. No visible freshness or bottling date.

A - Aggressive pour yields a finger of frothy tope head. Dissipates after a minute or so and leaves pretty spotty lacing. Film of microbubbles remains throughout. Body is dried apricot and muddy orange with pinkish highlights.

S - Piney, grapefruit, some medicinal qualities and even a faint hint of incense/nag champa

T - Bitterness and pine resin up front. A touch of juiciness and stronger citrus elements. Malty finish with lingering bittersweet.

M - Pleasant, resinous and sticky. Medium bodied with decent carbonation.

Overall, an excellent example of the style. Powerful, but complex and balanced.

Poured the 90 Minute Imperial IPA in to a Belgian Tulip.

A - Poured aggressively with a two and a half finger of off white head. The color is light amber that you can see right through.

S - Initially getting some light pine, a little grapefruit, with more roasted malt than I was expecting. Kind of curious about this one.

T - I'm kind of shocked, this beer has a ton of flavor, way more than the smell. Getting more malt than expected here as well. Lots of roasted goodness comes through. Yes, there is some hops and grapefruit, but not what I was expecting. Good, Yes . I'm just not sure about the flavor profile. Think malt first, then comes the hops and bitterness.
Yeah, I love it.

M - A thick beer here, medium leaning towards a heavy. I know this beer has some calories to it. Smooth of course, and finishes nicely.

O - Wow, Impressed in good way. Recommended! Cheers!
