Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (2903), on-tap (336), growler (31), cask (10), nitro-tap (1)

Notes:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

Appearance: It has a nice deep hazy orange color to it. It has a nice thick off-white head that dies down slowly and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of piney resins, mild citrus, floral hops, sweet toasty malts and some caramel.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a beautiful balance of hops and malts. Piney resins, floral and citrus balanced by sweet bready/toasty malts and caramel.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas.

how have I never reviewed the 90? this was an old standby for a number of years when I was back east, but I guess the Colorado market has got me distracted. picked up my first 4 pack in ages, and I just love it. almost forgot how good it is. pours a perfectly clear radiant copper color, lighter than that really, but not red enough to be amber, like medium maple syrup. the head is a few inches at first, but relaxes to just a quarter inch of white lace, although its easily fired back up with a shake of the glass. nose is sweeter resinous hops, bits of pine, and sticky dankness like fine bud. American light toasted malt as well, with a touch of alcohol for good measure. flavor is hop heavy, but again the sweeter rather than the bitter. I get some malt sweetness too, but most of it comes from the hops, oily as hell. just enough grain to balance it out. long finish, alcohol is barely present. I could stand a little more carbonation on this, but its not flat, its just personal preference for me. feels a touch heavy in that way, but its more so when its warmer. ice cold its epic, just doesn't drink too fast. fuller bodied, I think a 4 pack is the exactly correct dose on this. one of the pioneering big india pales, still up to snuff.

A: molten red amber. wonderful head that lasts and lasts while forming a fantastic honeycomb lacing.

S: a nosefull of hops followed by pine and fruit with sweet undertones.

T: hops, pine, bitter, malt undertones, smooth and satisfying. No hint of the 9% abv

M: perfectly carbonated, smooth.

O: Good IPA but given it's reviews I guess I am left wondering if I'm missing something as I didn't think it was that special. Maybe it's just not suited to my particular tastes. Still a very enjoyable IPA and would pick it over most IPA's.

Poured from bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a nice dark bronze and honey color with a 2.5 finger white, rocky head. Great retention. Minimal lace. Love the dark but clear color.

S: Earthy, dirt, dusty, musky, gravel and barley are prominent. Minor hint of lemon and minimal hops. Very malty scent. What you would expect of an Imperial IPA but nothing to write home about.

T: Sweet and earthy malts hit you hard. Barley and grass aftertaste lingers. Not terribly hoppy and tastes like a true Belgian IPA. Very strong malt flavors remind you that this is truly an Imperial IPA.

M: Full bodied and sits well on the palate. You would never guess this has 9% abv. Perfectly carbonated and goes down smoothly. A little sticky and almost creamy. Very nice.

O: I was stoked to find both this and the 120 minute IPA at a local bottle shop based on the reviews I have read, and the 90 minute IPA did not disappoint. The attractive dark color and massive head draw you in and the earthy, malty scent is fitting. Very malty taste that offers sweet and earthy flavors with average hoppyness. The nice full body and creamy texture is a great finish. This one lived up to its reputation and I would recommend it to any IPA fan. Excellent brew.

This is is Amazing Beer! I am not a big fan of this style but one thing sold me is the after taste does not taste like Pine Sol cleaner. Most of ipa have a pine sol lingering in your mouth after taste which I hate. It is not cheap but I treat myself to a four pack once in a while.

.Appearance: A great looking cloudy orange with amber color with a frothy head.

Smells: caramel, vanilla , pine and little clove.

Taste: Some bitterness on the tongue and some malt takes over. Finishes slightly bitter but not overe powering. Some hint of citrus and chocolate kind of taste in there as well. Real well balanced but

Mouthfeel- Overall great mouthfeel.

Overall: I am glad I tried this beer a year ago. Awesome IPA with great taste , balance, smell and no harsh pine sol after taste.

A: Copper filtered, low carbonation, two finger beige head is puffy and fades slowly.

S: Floral hops, heated spice, orange candy, pomelo, pineapple. Sweet caramel.

T: Tropical fruit candy, well balanced, not blasting my taste buds off with atomic energy as some ipas would. Alcohol present but well hidden. Its smooth. Some bitter aftertaste like a grapefruit. Pine for sure. Extreme balance as there is a low level of sweetness. Sweet, bitter, fruity, spicy, a tropical medly in balance. Honestly, I burp pine.

M: Heavy body, low carbonation. Smooth and syrupy but does not cling to the mouth.

O: For sure a great beer, and I can see why its considered one of the best. Is this the best beer I’ve had? I think not, but for sure its up there.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a footed tulip.

A: Dark amber hue. Pours about a 1 finger, bubbly, white head. Settles quickly leaving a thick ring around the rim, and a smattering of bubbles on the surface. Very spotty lacing mostly retreats back into the body of the brew.

S: Nutty and woody roasted malt base. Pine resin and a little clove.

T: Slightly sweet and piney. Woody roasted malt. Bitter pecan shell and orange rind. No components overpowering, very well-balanced.

M: Full, hearty, and syrupy. Slightly bitter aftertaste, but surprisingly not too much.

D: Sip and enjoy. The bitter character and heft will dictate it.

Atmosphere is really nice. Dark hue, slight bubbly white head, and a touch of lacing. Nose is a woody, and roasty with plenty of pine and a little spice. Flavor is a well-balanced combination of pine, bitter pecan, a little citrus on a woody roasted malt base. Full and hearty. Overall, this is a great quaff.

Pours a golden/amber color with a two finger white head. Leaves a ton of lacing. A lot of malt coming through on the nose with a bit of sweetness. Taste is really malty with a lot of citrus and sweetness. For a 90 IBU beer, this comes off not very bitter at all. The bitterness is there but the sweetness covers it up nicely. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied. Pretty thick for an IPA. Carbonation is just above average. Overall, I love this IIPA. Dogfish Head have done it again. They're known for their strange beers and this is no exception. Wow. I need to find 120 minute IPA now.

A- Beautiful, slightly cloudy orange/amber color with a finger of white frothy head.

S- All malt in the smell here. Notes of sweet caramel, vanilla, bready notes as well. I was expecting a lot more hops on the nose.

T- Slight bitterness on the front of the tongue. Great malt backbone takes over mid palette and continues on into the finish. Finishes slightly bitter. Some caramel malt flavors, vanilla, toffee maybe? Definitely a subtle hint of citrus and grapefruit. I get almost a cocoa/chocolate kind of taste in there as well. Pretty well balanced but leaning toward the malty side on this one.

M- Great overall mouthfeel. Slightly carbonated.

O- Very glad that I finally tried this brew. I am a big fan of the 60 and 75 minutes and this just out shined both of them. Awesome Double IPA although it could use a little more grapefruit bite, its still a great beer.

Finally got my hands on this legend and in a growler no less. Enjoyed on the beach in South Carolina in April, so that experience alone made this beer memorable. Nothing to complain about, other than the price. Very good, will have again, but doesn't quite stack up against those Cali DIPA's.

Dogfish 90 min IPA is a great beer has been for a long time. I was amazed at how well balanced it is. The smell is very hoppy and awesome, however the taste is balanced with big malt flavor. Even at 9% abv it is very drinkable and has a nice finish that wants you to go back for more. If you are afraid of IPAs and hops try this beer it will change your mind and taste.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 3/06/13.

A: Dark amber honey with a very impressive head.

S: Toasty malts, grass, honey and lemons.

T: Sweet malts backed up by honey and toffee notes. Very malt forward IPA.

M: Medium carbonation with a prickly hoppy aftertaste. Flavors stick around for a while.

O: This is a pretty nice beer, and it has a killer mouthfell and aftertaste, but I don't think it's world class. I'm all for malty IPAs, but this one is a little too sweet for me. Still a very good IPA regardless.

pours a Clear deep amber color with about a 1 finger slightly off white head with so so retention. Some lacing. Smells of hops, bread and cracker. Not very big in the nose. Good ammount of malt up front. Citrus hops in the middle. Slight milkchocolate and caramel on the pallate as well. Some bitterness towards the end and slightly dry finish. Silky mouthfeel to this medium body beer. Pretty balanced, actually wish it wasnt, was looking for a bigger hop profile. Definitly a good brew though

A: Dark amber/gold in color

S: Hoppy to be sure with all the wonderful pine and floral notes that go along with it. More complex smell (and better) than the 60minute. Citrus and sweetness can also be detected.

T: Much like the aroma. Hops dominate with plenty of pine, floral and sweet flavors. The alcohol is fairly noticeable but worth it to get the great hop flavors out.

M: Standard beer mouthfeel with medium carbonation.

Overall, a great example of the style. Not for the faint of heart though; it takes a real hophead to fight through the bitterness to enjoy the complex hop flavors but well worth it.

Caveat - this is old. Found a 4 pack at the local bottle shop sitting around, and felt obligated to pick it up. Bottled January 2012... > 1 year old.

Pour is nice golden orange amber with thing off white head, fading quickly.

Nose is nice but a bit a bit subdued, but still a nice amount of citrus and soft hop.

Flavor is a little muted from the age, but still a nice burst of juicy fruit. Mango, honeysuckle, and some pineapple are most prominent, followed by thick but biting hops.

Feel is thick and full, leaving a nice resin stick in your mouth.

Great beer. Need to have it again fresh to really assess it's greatness. But good even a bit old.

Lots going on with this beer. Has the aroma, one gets with good, strong Belg beers.
Really fills the mouth with gusto. It has bite!
It even LOOKS like a beer that is to be respected. Not yellow and certainly not dark, but a nice deep gold color with a beautiful white head.
It is not a heavy beer for being a 9%-er. Definitely tasty tho. Soooo....watch out!
This beer has me wondering what the 120 IPA would be like. Haven't had that one yet.
Had the 60 IPA...and it was pretty good. This one, (90 min), is a quality beer. A step above.

This is a GREAT beer.

Dogfish has a way of uncovering flavors I didn't know were in hops and barley. There are so many layers to this that it's an experience you have to repeat several times before you can work out all the them.

It has a bitter taste that's a requirement of the style but it's not overpowering or unpleasant bitterness. The other flavors are strong though. They won't let you forget what you're drinking or take a back seat to any food. You can drink this with the spiciest of spicy foods and it'll hold its own.

If you think you don't like IPAs I'd encourage you to give this a try. In fact, it's a must-try if you claim to enjoy craft beers at all.

This is by far the best IPA I have ever had. The malt balance on the hops is absolutely outstanding. The smell is what you'd expect - piny and citrusy. It just does not come across as a "hop-bomb" but instead is a seriously enjoyable beer that I keep in the beer fridge at all times

A: Dark golden almost brassy color with very little head and quite a bit of alcohol legs oh the glass.
It is a very filtered beer. leaving a very transparent ,see through beer with no sentiment what so ever. The head when poured aggressively, is a creamy, frothy, with tight bubbles as well as glazed over appearance.

S: very sweet, mangoes, Tropical fruits, sweet malts, the alcohol comes through big time as well, aside from honey, this is Hop slam on Steroids! I would say it lacks the pineapple aspect but it is so fruity with that alcohol just smacking you in the face! I enjoy this smell of this beer completely!

T: Malty sweetness with lots of Fruitiness on the front end with alcohol and hopy goodness on the middle to back end of this beer. There is almost a hint of chocolatey malt on the front end of this beer, its a very interesting DIPA! It tastes great but i have to put it a notch below the greats. The sweet Malts really dominate this beer.

M: Medium Mouth feel with not an overabundance of carbonation in my opinion. The mouth feel is almost thin which allows this beer to go down rather easily.

O: a very solid double imperial ipa! I would drink this again! The Malts really dominate this beer.

From the total wine growler station today

Pours a dark gold with two fingers of foam that have kept excellent retention . Good transparency, little carbonation, some good lacing. Smells of hops, citrus, strong malts, and some alcohol. Some pine and peach come through also. Taste follows the nose well, hops, very sweet malts, citrus undertones and floral notes. A little bit of booze, but the sugar is what really jumps out and hangs around. The feel is medium bodied and creamy. The sweetness really hurts the drinkability, also really cuts into the bitterness. The liter I have of it might be a little much

Overall this stuff is well made but I wouldn't care for it often, just too sweet

Served in a tulip.

Appearance: Copper with ruby highlights. Medium-coarse, off-white head. Head dissipates quickly, no lacing.

Aroma: More caramel than bready notes compared to 60 min. Ethanol, light citrus/spicy hop aroma dominates. Some woody, vanilla, barrel-like notes are barely perceptible. Perhaps some apricot in the back of the nose. Aroma much sweeter when compared to 60 min.

Flavor: Malt up front, yeilds to hop bitterness but ebb and flow present in 60 min is not present. Malt is not bready, much more caramel sweet, but not quite "raisin-like" sweetness. Hops are very firm (bitter throughout taste) and resinous bitters linger. Presence of alcohol is unquestionable. There are no barrel-like flavors, as noted in the nose.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium carbonation (although I'd prefer a bit more carb for this). Alcohol bite in finish and resinous bitter remains for quite some time.

Overall. Definitely not just a bigger version of 60 min. More caramel malt and hop dynamic is not present but is compensated by the bump in ABV while keeping an appropriate balance. Perhaps a bit hyped, but a solid IPA. Definitely preferred over 60 min if I had the choice. Malt is showcased more here compared to the 60 min where the hops are the centerpiece.

I had the joy of trying this beer at a friend's wedding. Normally, I seek out darker beers but I followed some suggestions and opened one of these. I was pleasantly surprised. This beer pours a wonderful amber color, hazy in composition with a bit of sediment through out. On the nose, I pick up floral and sweet scents and the taste follows suit. It delivers the typical bitterness of an IPA but pairs it with some sweet notes. As someone who is not traditionally an IPA lover, I can say I'd buy this one again.
