This beer is comparable to the 120 minute IPA in terms of taste and complexity. In my opinion, this is their best year-round brew. Sits between the 90 minute and 120 minute, and for the value is fantastic. Potent, sweet, and hoppy, this may be the perfect balance, especially for those who think the 90 minute is too hoppy, and the 120 minute too sweet.

Appearance: a dark reddish orange, with an off white to tan head that lingers. neither really clear or completely opaque

Smell: strong hops with some graininess and barrel qualities

Taste: hops with strong malty backbone. this iipa-ness gives way to some vanilla and oaky notes. pretty cool concept and tasty beer

Mouthfeel: comes in nice and creamy, very old ale-esque. ends up with some lingering bitterness

Overall: this is a cool concept and executed very nicely.

This was one of the more bizarre IPA's I've ever had. It's a mixture a double IPA with English old ale. The IPA aspects are wonderfully hoppy and the wooden qualities imparted by the old ale are so brilliant that I'm surprised it hasn't been tried in any other beers (that I know of). Very very nice carbonation, intense but not annoyingly so. The sweetness of this beer is very vanilla rather than hoppy, but as the beer warms the hoppiness begins to dominate more. Excellent.

At first sip, it tastes overly sweet but some of that is the citrus hitting your palate. After a few minutes, you begin to taste the subtle bitterness, savory notes of hops and an effervescent -- almost hefeweizen -- spring wheat. Very refreshing, light and tasty. Best enjoyed in a snifter, at the end of a long-day.

Had this on 2013-01-23 in York, PA at Holy Hound (from tasting notes)

A - Dark but fairly-clear amber. Short white head and mild lace.

S - Mild overripe stone fruit and light caramel malt. Low aroma level. Not impressive.

T - Hop oil, pine bitterness, dose of sweet citrus flesh, tea, light-medium toast, oak. Very nice.

M - Medium body and carbonation. Smooth, thick, prickly, resinous.

O - Takes like a stronger, oaked Ballentine XXX (which I had and liked while a late teenager in NJ). One of the best Dogfish Head beers I've had. Will seek this out again.

Appearance is a light, translucent copper with a thin layer of head that dissipates rather quickly, but leaves some nice lacing on the glass anyway. The nose is hoppy without a doubt. Malt flavors are upfront, but this offering is also quite hoppy throughout. The finish is not as hoppy as the best DIPAs out there, but this is clearly a blend of styles, so I don't think that it was designed to be a hop bomb.

BA classifies this offering as DIPA, the bar that was serving this on tap classified it as an Old/Strong Ale. DFH website states that it is a blend of two batches - a DIPA (probably 90 minute) and an Old ale (possibly Olde School).

Whatever it may be classified, it is certainly unique and very, very tasty. This baby is good for sipping as an after dinner treat. The only "problem" is that it is not boozy at all considering the high ABV and the 10% will sneak up quickly if one enjoys it too much.

Pours a dark amber, a little hazy with a tiny bit of white head.

The smell is fruity almost like a brandy. There's a lot of hops malts and some sugary sweetness.

The taste is malty with a syrup like quality. This is quite sweet but it is balanced well by the piney hops. The syrup taste gives way to a bit of alcohol and medicine. You can definately taste the 90 minute in there.

The mouth feel is medium bodied, dry and sticky with a medium amount of carbonation.

Overall a very original and tasty beer. It's a good sipper reminds me off brandy. I'll definitely get this again next time I'm in Dogfish heads.

Served on-tap at Bavarian Lodge in a 12 oz snifter.

A- pours a dark caramel with a 2 finger off-white head. Trails of lacing remain on the glass.

S- caramel, candi sugar, citrus and oak.

T- sweet citrus, oak, candi sugar, citrus and pine bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Has a slight dry finish.

O- very smooth good dipa. Nice balance of sweet malts, citrus and bitterness.

AGED REVIEW (2 yrs old refrigerated keg)
2010 vintage served on tap at Brickhouse BBQ yesterday.

A. Semi-hazed amber with a residual foam head, not surprised about the lack of carbonation given how old the keg is, still sad to miss it, though.

S. Smells almost like a white wine mixed with an IPA for all the citrus peel /pine resin, light toffee sweetness and tannic / vinous fruity ester blend.

T, M. Luxurious creamy smooth and rich body make this one a sipper for sure. Although the age of the brew has rendered it almost inert in carbonation, the texture still manages to win me over. Flavors of grapefruit peel and pith, caramel and toffee combine with strong herbal hopping and a wee dash of Simcoe onions in a balance profile similar to a west coast barleywine (which is from the age of the keg) but yet it still has that lovely woody oak flavor and dryness in the finish. The ABV is dangerously hidden, I didn't even notice it in the flavor or aroma until it smacked me all at once at the end of the glassful.

This DIPA performs quite reliably at morphing into a delicious barleywine with some age, just as has been foretold by the common knowledge of the forums of this website, and reaffirmed by my own personal experience.

A - Amber color and a bit cloudy. A creamy foam lcaes the glass nicely.

S - Hoppy, with notes of pine and citrus. Also has a boozy smell.

T - Quite hoppy and citrus sweet. Has a warming alcohol burn that makes this inviting during the cold months.

M - Medium to heavy feel. Acidic burn at the end. Minimal carbonation.

O - A robust DIPA that stands on its own. Certainnly interesting and in the tradition of DFH pushes the envelope of the style.

gnarley brew, definitely for the hop lover. pours like fresh honey with bits of the comb still inside. smell is citrus hops bigtime, with some biscuity english malts in the background. flavor is huge hops, similar to the 90 minute with that sweetness at the end to balance of the IBU count. alcohol is well hidden, although this is definitely a big beer in taste. mouthfeel is moderately carbonated and medium bodied. not their biggest hop bomb, but its way up there. nice brew fresh at the dfh taproom

From notes at Crunchy's

Burnt orange semi clear colored beer. Off white creamy head. Great lacing. Sweet malts and floral hops in the scent.

Hoppy upfront but not super hoppy overall, smokey woody elements. Very rich and powerful. Wish I would have gotten a snifter instead of a pint. Nice bittering in the finish and fairly dry. Caramel is also fairly prevalent in the finish. 10% abv is well hidden. I kinda have a beef with it tasting too much like the 90, but its better. Alcohol comes out more as it warms. Very smooth and creamy with a little bit of a carbonation bite. Pretty chewy, not very easy to drink.

Overall: I liked it but didn’t love it, another very solid from Dogfish head.

Had this on tap at the Press Club.

Poured into a Dogfish head goblet.

Pours dark orange, brown with a fingers thick off white head and some solid lacing.

Smell is very similair to 90-min IPA.

Taste is ridiculous, like 90 min with the balance of malt and hops, but also a creamy, vanilla, and oak from the barrel aging. Medium, creamy body and mild carbonation.

This beer is unreal, one of my favorites I've ever had. I love 90 Minute and this takes that beer a step further with the barrel aging.

Pours a slightly hazy orange copper color with a one finger cream colored head that dissipates rather quickly into a ring of foam with a small pool of film in the center of the tulip.

Citrus, orange, grapefruit lead the aroma with pine resin and sweet boozy brown sugar and malt carrying through. Woody oak rounds out the profile. Prunes and raisins emerge halfway through the drink.

Very powerful citrus fruits lead the taste, gathering at the mouth's corners in an almost puckering fashion. Booze, oak, and bready malt provide relief briefly, giving way to resiny pine and a solid bitter finish. Floral and earthy hops are evident as it warms.

Body is moderately heavy with a medium level of carbonation. A slight astringency creeps into the aftertaste.

Overall, a very solid beer, of course, from Dogfish. Fairly unique, and one that I'd revisit occasionally, though my recollection of the bottled version was slightly less favorable with a stronger oak presence and not quite as much citrus. Definitely worth a try on tap.

Pours a slightly hazy orange colore with a very small amount of off-white head.

The scent was of sweet fruit and notes of floral hops.

The taste was sweet and fruity, some citrus, mild floral hop presence, notes of toasted malt, also a mildly dry alcoholic finish.

Medium body, smooth and creamy, low carbonation.

I thought this was a very good beer, very flavorful and dangerously easy to drink. I will definitely revisit this one.

I had this on tap on a Dogfish Head takeover night at a local restaurant.

The beer was served in a small, snifter style goblet from the tap. The beer was coppery color with no inclusions.

It had light foam on the beer. It was very creamy, and they foam retained beer well over time. I really liked the lacing that this beer left behind.

The aroma was a pine bomb. I got some grapefruit, but the pine was over the top in a pleasant way.

The flavor was a good example of a DIPA. I felt that it was reminiscent of Oaked Arrogant Bastard. You get the high IBU's and the oakiness. At the end of each drink I pick up the strong ale flavors.

On the glass you see some alcohol legs. The alcohol created some nice heat in the throat and chest near the end of the glass. This was especially true near the end of the glass.

I really enjoyed this beer, and I am glad that I can age a few bottles in my cellar.

A-Pours well with an amber color. Head is slight. Translucent with some debris floating. Lacing is minute.

S-First sniff lets me know that this beer screams 'booze and balance'. Like 90 Minute DIPA, this beer has some citrus and perfumey hoppiness, but it is counteracted by the alcohol and super-sweet malt.

T-If you are looking for an oak-aged IPA this one is perfect. The wooden oak flavor sets in quite well druing the tail end of every sip. For that, I applaud Dogfish for doing what they set out to do. However, this beer is seriously lacking any hop complexity. Actually, its lacking the necessary hops in unison. Too boozy, and too sickly sweet.

M-Sticky sugar feel. Slick, in a non-awesome way. Bubbles are prevalent on the tongue. Has the signature Dogfish intense alcoholic drying feel. Eh.

O/D-Like my last review (Palo Santo), I was reluctant to try this beer because Dogfish and I do not get along, and a 4-pack is about $16 dollars. Waited to try it until I could no longer resist at a bar. Like most offerings from the company, I am disappointed. Lacks depth and is too boozy. I really need to keep the greenbacks in the wallet and refuse anything by Dogfish Head that has hops. Well, except for 60 Minute...that one is a treat

On Tap at the DFH brew pub. Pours hazy orange hue with a long lived white head and much carbonation. Aroma is of apricots, herbal hops with hints of caramel malt. Medium, very tangy body. Lots of hops, apricots and caramel malt on the palate. Wonderful brew.

This brew was served from draught in a mid-sized chalice at Rattle N’ Hum in New York, NY. It arrived a rich golden-brown color. It held a one finger tan head of creamy bubbles which offered great retention and thick lacing. Carbonation was minimal and no sediment was noted. The nose sung high with huge hops, which were really the star of the show. They were sweet, of honey, while the bud component of them remained predominantly citric and floral, with a bit of soap in the mix. There was a light toast to the malts, with a faint and cooling musk to soften the edges of the hops. As we sipped, the beer opened up with those citric and soapy hops, which were robustly sour from the start. They quickly moved to a sweeter note, with strawberry and honey sweetness to hold things up. This sweeter vibe carried us to the middle where a slight boozing kicks in, to transition us to the finish. This alcohol is blended well throughout, and hides at the very end amongst a mash of sour malts and hops. The aftertaste breathed with earthen hop, a little mineral, some alcohol, toasted malts, and big citrus. The body was on the fuller side, and carbonation was low. The feel to each sip was phenomenally soft, with supreme slurp and creaminess. This left the mouth fully coated and cooled. The abv was appropriate and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the feel and the aroma. The mouth gave such a soft aspect to an otherwise pretty stark beer. The hops were huge and blew up in the nose, and correspondingly in the flavor as well. This offering is great for the style, hitting all the standard stops along the way.

On tap at the Crow Bar in Corona Del Mar. Served in a goblet. Beautiful tranluscent bronze in color with a couple of fingers of creamy ivory head, great carbonation. Lovely to look at.

Floral but pungent piney hops on the nose with an earthy woodsiness. Bitter roasted toffee malts.

Taste is similar to nose but more wood on the palate. I get much of the oak aging but a bit sharp, more like cedar. Cigar box-like. Piney resin hops on the tongue but not overly bitter. Hop bitterness seems to sweeten a bit with temp increase. Subtle hints of vanilla.

Very smooth for an IPA, probably from the oak aging. I really enjoy this beer and hope to land some via bottles.

Half pour into a Palm goblet

A - rusty brown with a thick white head that settles to thin large bubbles at the rim

S - alcohol comes first, with caramel, raisin and nougat underneath, almost cloyingly sweet, a hint of the IPA hops coming through

T - caramel and malt sweetness with plum, currant, and maple syrup tones. I am looking for the hops...

M - syrupy and thick

O - Imperial IPAs are a tricky lot... I feel this one goes a little too far into malt land and looses some of the aggressive hop flavor that is the hallmark of the style

A- a thick head lingers, leaving a thick white ring when it finally dissipates, and a healthy amount of lacing. Warm amber yellow.
S- hoppy, floral

Poured from tap into a slim pint glass.
A: Nice amber color with lovely head and good lacing.
S: Swet caramel and a little alcohol
T: Sweet malty character with a bit of alcohol but in a good way.
M: Great mouthfeel and good carbonation.
Overall, I loved it. This one will sneak up with you. I'm going to have to switch to something else in order to figure out a way to drive home after.

Dark amber and bronze. Thin white head. Decent lacing down the glass.

Rich and heavy aroma with a lot of alcohol sharpness. Certainly some aromatic citrus notes, but this already seems to lean more closely to barleywine territory than that of a DIPA.

And this beer tastes like a barleywine as well. Hoppy and bitter, yet sweet and a touch syrupy, heavy and malty. Thick and heavy. Tasty.

A thick and luscious mouthfeel, a touch chewy, and since I'm basically considering this a barleywine and not a DIPA, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. A pleasure to sip!

A rich, thick, creamy, luscious, DIPA creation from Dogfish. Kudos to them for pushing boundaries. Although I think this is a terrific beer and a wonderful creation, I wouldn't seek it out. A pleasure to try, but I won't become a regular sipper of this.

Dogfish Burton Baton on tap at The Pony Bar, Hell's Kitchen, NYC.

Appearance: Served in an 8-oz glass, Burton comes with a huge head, like a Belgian (I'm thinking it might have been improperly poured). Tons of lacing and retention, but low carbonation.Color is a slightly transparent amber (shiny copper honey), surprisingly light for such a huge IPA.

Smell: Citrus, pineapple, syrup, an evening at a tropical beach. Lemon zest. Clover honey, a tad of spice. Nice sticky sweetness.

Taste: Hot, hoppy. Grassy. Sweet and heavy, like a cheesecake or coconut cake. Remember sucking on wild honeysuckle blossoms in the summer when you were a kid? That's what I think of when drinking Burton. Flower overtones, as if I were visiting a botanical garden.

Mouthfeel: Hot and boozy at the end, full flavor, medium body, low carbonation. Sweetness, honey all around.

Overall: Nice! Eight ounces are mighty drinkable. Not as complex as the bottled version but plenty delicious, more so if you like sweet/heavy Double IPA's. HOWEVER! No oak to speak of in here, which is weird because in the bottle it sure is prominent. Still, I love this one.
