Notes:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.
For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.
After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.
When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

Poured from a bottle made in the most recent bottling run, into an unbranded chalice. Poured straight out of the fridge at ~45 degrees F, allowed to warm over the course of consumption.
A - deep amber with 1 finger of white head from a fairly vigorous pour. Head dissipates fairly quickly, leaving some lacing behind. Looks nice.
S - Burton Baton comes up a bit small in the nose, but it's still a great nose. You get a hint of vanilla woodiness, with a backstop of fig/plum/raisin and a noticable hop presence. Alcohol is also noticeable. It smells very good, but the alcohol presence and overall weakness knock it down a notch.
T - Luckily, the taste of this one more than makes up for it. The woody vanilla notes are perfectly subtle for such a young beer, and the pronounced hop flavor is well balanced by the fruitiness and significant malt presence. The flavor really stands out in this one, and the alcohol is nowhere to be found. It's difficult to incorporate wood aging and hoppiness into a beer that is this delicious young, but DFH has nailed it with their blend. I haven't had an aged Burton Baton, but considering the flavor profile, I imagine you want the hoppiness and wood to be fresh, and not aged out.
M - A bit thick, which is typical of most DFH beers. Balances out the alcohol content nicely and leaves a smooth aftertaste. Carbonation is average. Seems right on for the style, but doesn't quite linger as pleasantly as other beers this size.
O - Burton Baton is one of my favorites. The overall experience is fantastic, the blend they use really melds the hoppiness nicely with the oak and vanilla notes from the wood aging. A great beer, I will gladly have this one again and again.
