American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (1488), on-tap (79), growler (4), nitro-tap (2), cask (1)

Notes:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

12oz bottle. Pours a hazed amber topped with a very tightly laced finger thick creamy head with some glass stick action and ample retention.

Some biscuity tannin aromas in the nose, framed with floral and wood.

Very smooth upfront, and a bit creamy in mouthfeel. The malty body flexes with a full and even bready sweetness and doughy and soapy edges. A citric bite throws down on the taste buds with some herbal spice, flower pith, leaf, and some oily stick, with piney notes. Loads of fruit presence, like a fruit mélange of blood orange and grapefruit steeped in a rose-hip peel tea-like character. An aggressive spicy alcohol presence waits beneath, hitting the head with a warming sensation that targets the forehead region and numbness forming in the temples. A deep oak flavor comes about towards the finish, and especially throughout as the beer warms. A very distinct and subdued dry and semi-tangy flavor that’s pulled from the oak and is a bit vinous at times, layers this beer with much depth. Suggestions of vanilla as the beer warms, with hints of brown sugar sweetness. Bready and soapy lingers.

A two-thread beer, blended with a new Imperial IPA aged in French oak for four months and 90 Minute IPA. The latter is noticeable, perhaps too noticeable to make this truly unique, but the end result is a welcomed familiarity, and none-the-less deliciously complex. Burton Baton is a concept that I've come to expect from Dogfish Head. Kick-ass.

Orange in color with some reddish hues. Pretty awesome head. Off white and rocky that leaves a beautiful lacing.

Plenty of citrusy hops in the nose to go along with the pine. Just a hint of oak and vanilla.

Bold and yet very easy to drink. I can really pick up some old ale characters and then I get a hit of hops in the finish. I can see why this goes over so well. Pear and apple esters that blend well with some orange notes. There is a deep warming sensation from the oak and old ale. Loads of resin and background bitterness. NIce touch of caramel and vanilla as this warms. Some of the hops mellow and the body seems to pick up.

Very nice beer. Some warming alcohol but nothing to take away from this Imperial IPA.
