A neo-lambic ale that goes through both a yeast and bacteria fermentation and is then aged on oak chips and 400 pounds of Delaware peaches. This beer is very tart and complex. It is bottle-conditioned in champagne bottles.

I had this in bottles right after it came out and had an undercarbonated one. I had it on tap soon after and was impressed, but not floored. I'm drinking one right now, a good 5+ months afterwards and am just amazed. It's so amazingly good. Pours out Tang orange with no head at all. The smell is heavy of peaches. Starts sour and fruity on the tongue, no real barnyard scent or taste, however. Incredibly drinkable as well. It's a shame I bought the last one of these at the bar, I'd be going back to get some more tomorrow. It's just a step behind Cantillon and I would imagine a wonderful "gateway beer" into the world of true lambics and guezues. If you have a bottle cellared it's okay to drink it now. This beer is truely the direction American lambics should go. Easily accessible, heavily drinkable, and really good. Neo-lambic indeed.

750ml corked bottle consumed at the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Gaithersburg, MD. According to the menu, it was bottled in 9/2004, and the label also indicates that it was bottled in 2004. For some reason they blacked out all instances of the words "ale" and "beer" on label with the sole exception being the word "ale" in "A Right Lusty Ale.." under Festina Lente on the front of the bottle.

Pours a hazed and clouded tangerine with only a few clear bubbles lingering around the edges. No carbonation streams. Subsequent pours managed to loosen some microfine infused bubbles that drift and disappear, but a head is impossible to raise. This one looks flat and limp. The smell is tart and peachy, sharp, but not overly so. Hints of Tang, as well as some distinct white wine (Gewurztraminer or Riesling) tones. Nice and inviting. The taste is soft and tart, of peach pits and crunchy unripe peach flesh. Quenching and refreshing, the sourness is inviting, making each drink a pleasure and beckoning the next. I did not pick up any overt oak notes, nor was there any strong malt component. Just a beautifully tart, peachy profile. The mouthfeel is a bit limp with no carbonation and a medium body. A touch drying in the finish. I could have gone through plenty of bottles by myself without a problem. Definitely recommended.

This beer pours a cloudy straw yellow, with almost no head. What head is present, is white. It leaves a surprising amount of lacing, considering the fact that almost no head is present.

This beer has a pleasent spur aroma. I smell some fruit. Peaches and pears. It has a slight citrus aroma as well. Although that is pretty much all the aroma, it smells great.

This beer has a sour flavor. It tastes great. Some fruityness is also present. As with the aroma, I taste mostly peaches. It has a slight earthy Belgian yeast flavor to it also.

This beer goes down smooth leaving a crisp sour aftertaste. It has almost no carbonation to it at all.

I think this beer might make a good session beer, but it might get a little overbearing after a while since it is so sour.

Overall: I really liked this beer. Thanks so much to ggaughan for this great beer. I owe you. Hats off to Dogfish Head.

Finally...2003 Bottle

A: Poured almost still. When the cork came out it barely made any noise at all. Color was very clear with no carbonation or head. Really nice bright orange color. Little bit of gold thrown in as well.

S: I was shocked there was still this much peaches in the nose. It smelled fresh. Quite a bit of sourness as well. Not really and bret or funk smells but plenty of lactic acid. Overipe peaches.

T: God damn this is a sour beer. A friend at the tasting said he had this beer in 2007 and remembered it being the most sour beer he had ever had and declared this more sour then he remembered. Again I was shocked at the amount of peach that came through. Lots of lactic acid. Just a touch funky but it again came across as overripe fruit.

M: The beer was almost still. Just the slightest hints of carbonation after an extremely aggressive pour. Medium body. It could have used a bit more carbonation.

D: This beer is doing just fine. The peaches have held up amazingly well as this is SOUR. When you poured the bottom of the bottle in it became even more sour. From what we could all remember they let this spontaneously ferment with unwashed peaches. The level of fruit and sourness is something to behold. A real treat.

01/28/06- Sampled at my tasting. Brought by Irishsnake.

Presentation- 750ml bottle, I think from the 2003 bottling. Poured into my Delirium Tremens tulip.

Appearance- Kinda of orange-golden in color. A tad clouded or hazy. Very light lacing, no head on the pour.

Smell- Funked out for sure. Lots of brett mixed with racetrack barn scents and a nice peachy scent in the nose as well. Smells like a tart one.

Taste- Wow, this is tasty. First off, it's not as tart or sour as expected. Much like a gueuze rather than a traditional lambic. Lots of brett infused with a hefty tart peach flavor. Maybe a touch chalky, but otherwise it's near perfect.

Mouthfeel- Light tartness with almost zip in the carbonation department.

Drinkability- Fabulous beer here. Thanks for bringing it to the tasting John!

Had this over and over and over again at the Mondial V.I.P booth as I pimped it to all who would listen. This, to me, was the most memorable beer of the Mondial... I will enumerate why.

Lovely veiled peach flesh (fitting isn't it) tones with minimal carbonation from the pour. Looks almost muddy but the sunshine from within just lights up the glass.

Aromas are simply exquisite. A fully developped tartness that displays firm notes of peaches, vanilla and orange skins rises from the glass and kisses the nostrils. This is not in-your-face like 3 Fonteinen but much more subtle and doesn't proceed to scare you off.

Flavours are a cinch for a well blended gueuze. If it wasn't for the peaches I would have pegged this as a Frank Boon Geuze. Not overly aggressive but a punchy tart mouthfeel followed by firm notes of peaches, apples and a drying finish where hints of vanilla, oak and fungi meld to provide one of the most pleasing finishes I have ever experienced.

Was served from a 75 cl bottle, which I could easily have finished by myself as the drinkability of this offering by Sam Calagione is without fault. One of my ten best for sure.

Extreme Beer Fest 2004...

Murky deep yellow color, small head and no real lace on the glass. Nose prickling aroma, good astringency. Finely carbonated and soft in the mouth (nice to see this problem is getting better). Flavor is great, sense of Brett and musk farminess, properly tart with a fine sense of real peach (not peach syrup) coming through, all the way to a pit-like bittering. Great sourness that's just leavened rather than overwhelmed by fruit. Much better than pretenders from either side of the ocean. Probably the top North American "Lambic" I've had, despite taxonomic or geographic subjectivity....

Spritzy, tart, fruity... but much cleaner than a lambic. Hmmm... interesting!

It pours a just slightly hazy golden body beneath a short head of bright white foam that all-too-quickly dissipates, leaving next to no lace behind.

The nose is lightly musty and barnyardish (Brettanomyces) with a distinct note of sweet peach.

In the mouth it's lightly zesty and crisp with a thin/medium body.

The flavor offers all of the refreshing qualities of a fruit lambic, but it seems to be more based upon Brettanomyces than peddiococcus, lactobacilus, or some other bacteria. It's peachy, but just slightly sweet; and fairly tart. There's little bitterness, but it's not needed as it still finishes chalky-dry due to its acidity.

As far as serving and enjoying goes, anywhere that a traditional geueze would work... this will work just as well (and it actually reminds me of a certain peche beer from a certain well respected brewery from Belium!). I think it would also pair extremely well with a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner as it's light on the palate, tart like cranberries, and spritzy enough to refresh between bites!

Thanks to Clvand0 for sharing. Now...TART. Sour puckering tart. Starts off cidery or White Reisling-like, but ups the ante into the flavors. Small level of sweetness, just enough to exhibit tart pears, apples, peaches, and raspberries. Otherwise, controlled souring of the beer lends to an eye watering, mouth puckering, and desert dry finish. Slight earthy, yeasty, hoppy flavors and aromas, mainly in the body. No doubt, this is a high quality Lambic, but you've got to be in the mood for it.

Reviewed on 6/11/08. 2004 bottle at Spuyten Duyvil. Pours a light orange with no head. Aroma of sweet peaches. It tasted just like biting into a sour, juicy peach. Very smooth, extremely drinkable, and quite delicious.

Opened at Monk's Cafe Beers of the Cellar event. Pretty sure this is from the first year. It pours out hazy yellow with no head. The aroma is really focused on the peaches, which I'm pretty impressed have remained this prominent. It hints towards sour and funky. The taste is delicious, why did they stop making this? Peaches and funk, very fruity overall. Very well carbonated still and nicely drinkable. It smells exactly like the taste. One of my favorite from DFH.

The beer was courtesy of clvand0 at our tasting. The beer poured the color of slightly watered down apple juice. There was absolutely no carbonation on this one. There was a slight escape as the cork was removed, but no head formed, and no bullbed were detectable. The nose was tart and sour. Tart apples and sour white grapes, with a touch of fruity sweetness all come through. The usual suspects are there as well, good barnyard funkies are all about this beer. The taste was awesome. The tart and sour almost puckered my cheeks initially, but it quickly died down to give me a burst of apples, sour grapes, sweet hay, funky afterflavors and some sweetness on the finish. Damn. This is from the US? The feel was thin to moderate, no carbonation at all. Can a lambic be highly drinkable with the sours and the tarts and the funkies? I say yes. What a great offering from DFH. I anticipate a new batch and will seek it out when I find it has made it this direction.

Cloudy onion skin color and a swirl of gas on top. Aromas are strictly old-school lambic: stomach acid, green apple skins, mustard paste. Only this also posesses a deeply funky, masses of mashed peach flesh and peach pits aroma. On the palate it's plump and intensely sour. Sweaty bandages, milk, macadamia nuts and alkaline peach juices somhow survive in a broth of wiry sourness. Terrific stuff. More gas would not hurt this beer.

I nearly cried after I realized I'd consumed half the bottle.

OK, maybe it wasn't that bad. But after drinking this, I found myself wanting more -- and then some more. And after that, maybe another bottle for good measure. Addictively excellent beer from DFH.

Its color lies somewhere in the spectrum between yellow and Crayola's "Atomic Tangerine." The modest head forms only upon an aggressive pour -- we all know the story there -- but this isn't nearly as "undercarbonated" as I was expecting. Certainly, the mouthfeel would have been dramatically improved by increased CO2, but this is still an impressive beer.

True to form lambic tartness is an obvious factor in both the sweet-tart peachy aroma and the style appropriate flavor. A bit funky to be sure, but DFH just convinced me that peach might be the perfect lambic fruit. The fruit is a force here, but the transition from the initially tart flavors to the peaches is practically seemless. An absolute refresher.

A burp, hidden from those around me, replays the tartness to be sure. This is one acidic sonofabitch, but I think anyone who finds true Belgian lambics a bit tough to swallow and the uber-sweet Lindemans beers too sugary might find their perfect lambic companion in this treat.

And 7% alcohol is clearly either a lie or an example of DFH's mastery of clever flavors and unique conccoctions. I'll guess the latter.

This is something of the beer equivalent of a breakfast treat -- peach crepes and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Sweet and ascerbic. Light and refreshing. Fruity and complex. If the carbonation were there, you could rank this flawless in appearance and amazing in mouthfeel -- and among my favorite beers. Anne and Randy are too good to me. Perhaps I'll UPS them my first born.

There is no doubt that carbonation would easily improve all aspects of this beer, but you must respect Dogfish Head for even attempting a brew of this scale, how much knowledge of sour beers is out there anyway? Aromas of crushed currants and glazed donuts and cotton t-shirts from the dryer. It's sour, any hint of peach would be the small, rock-hard unripe early Summer peach still clinging to a tree branch. Oh boy if they could have got some bubbles in this it would have been an instant classic. As throat ripping as most in its class. I like it, carbonate it, please.

Label Lingo and bottle babble: Latin for “Make haste slowly” and “Enjoy with someone you love.” I don’t love anybody THAT much! Corked big boy browner with a beat up label from me keeping all over. Gold cage and cork that required AAA to bring out a tow truck to a quick “Fsst!” Nothing more.

Steeped into me Flying Fish tulip with slight straw golden hues and scant bubbles occasionally rising. A tiny microscopic white collar head cap halo rings the glass. Second yeast pour after a swirl elicits cloudy sediment and ½” foam cap that scattered in 1.5 seconds.

Honey straw with fruit blends of white grapes, rhubarb, and white grape sweet wine. Some airy barnyard notes. Floral bouquet of honeysuckle.

First Swigs: Here goes…raspberry tart. Citrousy lemon peel lingering pucker. Ephemeral aftertaste quickly dissipates to a clean lemon juice trace. This is a superlative bitter sour pucker. Gueuze like lemony citrous through and through. Plenty of Earthy flavors and meadow like outdoorsy wildness. How a brewery in DE makes a wild brew like this is beyond me. A compliment: Jolly Rancher Lemon and sweet Tarts!

Tight small sudsy feel that sours and foams if this sits. Acidic feel after halfway through. Pucker enough to make me shake my head and blurt out “blrlrlrlr!” Proper feel for the style. Drinakbility? Fastest 750 mL that did a disappearing act in 20 minutes.

Last Swigs: Lemon peel sour and light. Reminds me of alternative ale brewed without hops like Heavyweight Gruit Fluid.A lambic lover’s ne plus ultra? Not quite but darn close. No damn close. 7.0 % ABV is totally hidden. If only alcoh-pop drinks were this good. Sam C. himself offered this bottle to me at the Beeryard in Feb 2004 while he advised me to let it sit for a year. When I saw him at the GreyLodge the first question he asked me was “Have ya tried the DFH FL bottle yet?” Next time we meet, my answer will be a resounding“Hell yeah!”

This came in a 750mL corked bottle with a torn up label. Pours a light golden color with no head and no carbonation - extremely clear. Very clean look. The aroma is mainly a sour and sweet fruit character - apples and apricots. The flavor is very good for the style, especially from an American brewery. Very tart/sour in the back of the jaws with a lot of fruit flavors. Smooth and easy to drink. Very well done. I really don't care for Lambics, but I would have this one again.

Danger this is way too drinkable. My buddy brought me a 2 year old bottle of this back from a trip to the ale house in MD.

It has a nice yellow fuzz peach color with little head that is soon gone. Smells of peach and apricot, overripe fruit and a citrus zest. The taste is tart but not jarring; sour but melting. The flavor bloom on the tongue as the sour receeds to reveal a pleasent peach memory and a thirst for more. It could use a touch more carbonation.

I first had a few bottles of festina lente with friends a few years back when DFH first released it and although I liked the idea of the beer and the potential that it could have, it didn't seem mature enough at the time and thought it could use some cellaring time.

Fast forward to the current time. I was lucky enough to have a few glasses of festina lente at a DFH beer tasting in Philadelphia a few weeks back and was really impressed with this beer and how it as matured over time. As it is no longer made I know the bottle had a bit of age on it but could not tell exactly what year we had.

The beer pours a nice rich bubbly copper color and has a very lambic, fruity smell and taste to it. You can compare this to champagne and the carbonation quality that it has. The alcohol level is very deceiving in this as I could find myself drinking this all day and not noticing...until it is too late. I plan on picking up a case of this over the Christmas holiday and splitting it with my brother and cousin. Can't wait to try more.

Pours a hazed yellow with light carbonation and no head, none what-so-ever. Smells like the funk, plus a couple rotten lemons and peaches. Tastes like melted wax, piss, muriatic acid soaked limestone, a donkey’s ass, my feet after a hike on a humid day, and lemonade. This stuff is awesome!!! Extremely acidic. Absolutely not for the faint of heart. Extreme as beers get. Perfect for capping off a long day of Barley Wine drinking. This stuff is just awesome. Geuze like. Sour as beer gets. It can match up head to head with a lot of Belgians and take home the prize. The best part is, it only gets better with age, much better! I fell in love with a three year old bottle of the stuff. Now if only I could get my hands on some more…

Presentation: 750ml flat bottomed brown glass bottle, sealed with a plain thumbed cork restrained with a black steel cap and a gold colored wire cage. Label clearly states options “2003 2004 2005" with the words "Year Brewed” on the right hand side and the “Packaged in” code is left blank and free of nicks. So no markings at all, as such it is hard to say how old this one is, I suspect 03 or 04. Listed as “A right musty ale made with honest to goodness peaches”. 7% ABV.

Appearance: Hazed body with an unnatural bubbling head which very quickly rescinds to nothingness. Very low carbonation, yet this exhibits a striking look which has a very reminiscent aura of a straight lambic.

Nose: Fresh peaches, and lots of them, with a ‘just cut’ sweetness which melds with a hint of apricots and some sourness to offset the sweet flesh of the peaches.

Taste: Lots of peaches, sharp with a sweetness that crushes the sourness. As you work your way through the sweetness from the fresh peachy flesh soon fades and the sourness builds. Light on the funk, which could be a nit-picking comment, but I like the fact that this is high on the acrid fruity aspects rather than the funk. Gentle Brett tickles but never forces itself out of hibernation, yet it contributes to overall lambic character that this exhibits.

Mouthfeel: Refreshing crisp with a soft light body which adds a ‘sessionable’ quality to this sharp fruity-beauty. The lack of carbonation does not really detract from this one, though a little more oomph in the conditioning would have been a bonus.

Drinkability: Incredibly refreshing, it exhibits this single aspect of lambics incredibly well. Soft, yet sharp, with a tart twist in the finish. Biting satire licks the ending whilst a sarcastic introduction has you begging for more. I had a 750ml but it still didn’t feel like enough.

Overall: I have been lucky to try this one several times, from the first time at the 2004 BA Extreme Festival in Boston to sampling some recently this year at the Mondiale in Montreal. It is always an enjoyable libation and a favorite tipple. But until recently I never managed to snag a bottle of this all to myself, that was, until now. Thanks to BA Erica for snaffling a few of these for me. Much appreciated.

Paid $8.00 for a big bottle. Aged for about 6 months.

Reminds me more of champagne than beer. Though the beer qualities are definitely in there. Almost a cider-beer-champagne, with individual elements of all three. I couldn't really taste the peaches, but definitely a fruit presence. This stuff was very very good, and certainly worth opening and sharing with a few friends. I'll leave it at that.

Beer? Lambic? Fruit beer? I'm not sure what this qualifies as. It doesn't matter. It's a fun experience.

750mL bottle poured into a snifter. It pours a medium apricot color with almost no carbonation or lacing. The smell is sweet & sour, tart & funky. A hint of sweetness too. The taste is sweet with peach, then shifts to a bit of tartness. It's not overpowering though, it blends very well on the tongue. The body is fairly thick and smooth, just needs more carbonation. The drinkability is good too. I can't believe a lambic like this was made in the US. It's awesome!

An aged version. Label says it was brewed in 2004.

This beer has a light golden tone that is ever so slightly hazed. Bubbly head, but not much of it. Lacing is nearly absent. The aroma offers smells of peaches and barnyards and acidity. The tartness hits my palate first with a refreshing blast of peaches following. Almost a residual sugar coated fruit sensation after the swallow. But just for an instant before the acidity washes it away. Some definite Brett character here. This is a dry beer. But not as dry or mouth puckering as the lambics I've tried from Cantillon. I'm no expert in this area of beerdom, but this seems to be a pretty damn good representation of the style.

Gotta give props to my man in Long Beach for setting me up with a nicely cellared beer like this. Thanks much Darren.

Brewed in 2004...
Appears a hazy, orange toned amber with a spritzy, white head that quickly fades away. Scattered spots are left around the glass. Small streams of CO2 slowly rise to the top.
Huge aromas of brett, vinegar, sweaty clothes, horseblanket, peaches, and citrus.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a mouth puckering vinegar smack that reminds me of a hand full of sour patch kids. Very tart up front with some candy sweetness that is buried way in the background.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, spritzy, finishing thin and dry with my lips still smacking together at the thought.
