Notes:
Chicory was one of the first beers we started brewing at our pub back when it opened in 1995. It's a dark beer made with a bunch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort and licorice root. We use whole-leaf Cascade and Fuggle hops, as well as pale, roasted and oatmeal grains.

On tap @ the Winking Lizard. Served in a pint glass.
I don't think I've ever had this before. I guess something about the beer just made me never pick it up or try it on tap - I know I've crossed paths with it many times. Well, from the looks of things, I've been missing out. The beer looks really nice in the pint glass. It's a black color with just the slightest brown and red along the edges. The beer has absolutely awesome head and nice lace. This is a good start indeed.
Dogfish Head Chicory Stout smells really nice, but the flavors don't pop like the best coffee stouts do. That being said, there are great notes of chicory, coffee, chocolate and a touch of licorice. A touch of sweet malt comes and goes, and the hops are minimal at best. This is pleasant but could be more expressive.
The taste is pleasant and relatively straight-forward. This would be a great stout for anyone just getting into the style, and is certainly a treat for the chicory drinker. I get notes of chocolate, chicory and coffee from the roasted malt. There's also a nice creamy, sweet malt. A touch of licorice rounds things out. There's a slightly watery aftertaste that really brings this down from scoring higher.
The body is nice and full and the great subtle touch of carb keeps this creamy and enjoyable. Lingering chocolate tries to persist but eventually gets washed out. Ends in a mild touch of roast and minimal bitterness. A very drinkable and enjoyable stout. I'm glad to have finally enjoyed one!
