Notes:
Chicory was one of the first beers we started brewing at our pub back when it opened in 1995. It's a dark beer made with a bunch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort and licorice root. We use whole-leaf Cascade and Fuggle hops, as well as pale, roasted and oatmeal grains.

12oz bottle into an oversized wine glass.
Appearance: 1 inch off-white head, dissipates quickly. Deep brownish black with some red in the light. Spotty, clumpy lacing that doesn't stick around.
Smell: Smokey, sweet, with a small hint of chocolate. Very pleasing.
Taste: Lively, spicy and smokey flavor that's enriched by the carbonation. There's a mild hop bitterness that doesn't add much, a hint of dark roast coffee, and a nice creamy finish. Overall, the complexity is well balanced, and the alcohol is completely masked. However, I don't think there's as much (nor as much good) going on in the taste as in the smell.
Mouthfeel: A bit overcarbonated for my liking in a stout, but the carbonation does a job keeping the flavor lively, at least. The mouthfeel is mostly very smooth.
Drinkability: Decent. The beer is lighter than most stouts, and the alcohol is well-masked. The alcohol crept up on me unexpectedly (considering it's only 5.2%), which I think speaks only to how easy it is to drink this beer quickly.
---
I didn't love this beer, but the flavor was good. I think it would be great if you like your stouts a bit less intense and with a decently low ABV.

bottle into snifter
appearance: pitch black with off white 1 finger head
smell: coffee, roasted malts, espresso, licorice, slight anise, dark chocolate, vanilla
taste: subtle roasted coffee flavor, a bit watery due to lower abv, but decently flavorful. Some licorice and dark chocolate notes round out the taste.
mouthfeel: high carbonation, thin bodied
overall: A decent offering from Dogfish Head, nothing I will go out of my way to seek out, but a decently well balanced coffee stout thats quite different from anything else.

Pours a beautiful dark cola colour with a tan head, more bubbly and poppy than a Guiness-type cover. I don't get a strong scent of anything, except a pretty standard stout coming through. Tastes dark, partly bitter, more beery than I expected. Lingers a while. Sits in the mouth and gets stronger. Only flavor note I can pick up is a little coffee. Not bad, not amazing.

Really dark brown chestnut color with a 1 finger kaki head that fades rather quickly. Not much lacing. Not the best looking stout ive seen. Nice aroma of chocolate and coffee. Really rich delicious chocolate. I am getting some molases in the background. Some hints of graininess in the nose as well. Like the aroma it tastes of chocolate as well. Sweeter and less rich than i thought i would get after smelling it. Definitly some roasted flavors in there. Bitter cooking chocolate lingers for a bit in the aftertaste. Kind of watery, not much to it. Light mouthfeel for stout. Little too sweet for my liking. Not a big stout, pretty average to me. Certainly drinkable.
