Had on tap at Yardhouse in Boston for a special Harpoon Rare beer night during Craft Beer week. Beers served were brewed on their Pilot System in very small batches and only available that one night. Other beers included: Uncle Fester, Maple Scotch Ale, Bacon Bock, and Black Beret IPA.
Served in a Goblet. Not sure what size, but probably between 12-14oz.
A- Appears an opaque dark black, not too thick, very bottom of glass allows a very tiny bit amount of light. About a finger and half of thick creamy white head that leaves spotty lacing.
S- Nice sweet smell of dark candied fruits- cherries, plums, etc.; bourbon; molasses; and a little bit of red wine. Much sweeter smell then the non-BA Triticus mixed with a pleasant smell of bourbon.
T- Like smell- tastes of dark fruits, cherries, plums, definite presence of bourbon flavors that balance very nicely with the fruit tastes, a little bit of a red wine finish mixed with wheat characteristics, followed by a sweet sugary aftertaste. Similar to non-BA Triticus, but again flavors amplified and definitely sweeter balanced with sweet bourbon flavors.
M- Medium bodied, slightly syrupy but not overly so, average carbonation to slightly above average for this type of beer. Alcohol definitely present, but not much burn at all for a 12% abv beer. Sweetness definitely hides the alcohol well.
O- The barrel aging for this beer really did the Leviathan Triticus wonders. I liked the regular Triticus, but I was never a huge fan. The bourbon barrel definitely made this beer a lot sweeter while not going overboard and added a very noticeable nice bourbon presence that balanced very well with the beer. I've never been a huge fan of wine-styled beers, but this is probably one of my favorites I've had. For only $7 it was definitely worth it. I hope Harpoon starts brewing bigger batches of it and it becomes a regular offering.
Talked to a Harpoon employee, from what he knew he thought this beer was aged up to 4 years in Buffalo Trace Barrels. He also said they have no plan on bottling it and it is just a rarity on tap for now.
Serving type: on-tap
