Notes:
This beer is brewed with our proprietary yeast – the same yeast we’ve used since first brewing Harpoon Ale – and some interesting hop varieties. The combination of Pale, Rye, Caramel 60, Flaked Rye, and Vienna yield a complex malt body that stands up to the spiciness of the rye and the pronounced hop flavor. The rye also adds a reddish hue to the beer. The kettle additions of Centennial, Apollo, and Chinook, and the dry hop addition of Falconer’s Flight add a multidimensional hop character.

Got the chance to try this when it was first being placed into sixers at the brewery. Really awesome when tried fresh
A- a cop perish body with great foam that recides leaving web lacing cracking the edges of the glass. Bold with the colors
S- spicy and herbal with a strong component caramel malt underlying the pine scent. Bold and actually flamboyant with the spicyness of a rye scent.
T- flavorful spiked pine residue lays over the caramel hop flavor. Very flaked with a resinous hop flavor that more than likely came from the dry hopping. Just a delicious herbal/spicey taste
M- coating flavor that resonates with good carbonation
I- I really like this ipa. Elevated flavors all over that really resonate throughout the experience! I will always try this

Vessel: 12oz. bottle poured into tulip glass
Appearance: Pours a light golden orange with a hint of brown. There is an instant 2.5 fingers of head that begins to fade fairly quickly. The beer has a distinct light haze and nice carbonation.
Smell: There is a clean hoppy aroma with distinct malty sweetness.
Taste: Hoppy and crisp with pine notes. The malty sweetness is notable but as much as you would think after smelling it. This beer has a medium/light body and ends dry with a nice hoppy bitterness left over
Mouthfeel: Light and enjoyable with a hint of smoothness and a crisp finish.
Overall: This is a really nice rye IPA that I recommend you give a shot. I will certainly be picking it up again.

On tap at The Office. Pours orange with a long lasting, white head. Aroma is of orange fruit, citrusy hops and biscuit malt. Body is medium and tangy. Taste is similar to aroma with citrusy hops dominating biscuit malt, orange fruit and rye spiciness. Long grapefruity finish. Fresh on tap, very nice IPA.

12 fl oz brown bottle served in a tumbler.
Thick copper in color; noticeably active carbonation. 1/2 inch creamy, white head with above average retention. Condensed lacing throughout the tumbler with pretty good strength.
Citrus and pine hop aromas with a stout dose of spicy rye; notes of saffron. Toasted, biscuit-like malt presence with a mild layer of diacetyl.
The rye presence is very prominent making its presence known almost immediately; spicy with substance. The malt character is bready and toasted; great stability to stand up the floral and citrus hops as well as the aggressive rye. Quite bitter with character; notes of light raspberry, lemon zest, and light caramel in the aftertaste which make for a somewhat unpleasant ending to an otherwise flavorful and balanced beer.
Medium bodied; active yet smooth on the palate. A nice balance in textures with somewhat competing flavor components.
A flavorful beer, filled with minor flavor flaws along the way. A little rough around the edges, but a good starter recipe to craft.

A: Pours a nice amber/copper color with a fingers worth of bubbly head
S: Get a lot of the spiciness from the rye along with a bite of fruity hops
T: Starts out slightly spicy and then gets rounded off nicely by the other malts, mostly vienna. The hops don't really come out until the end, where they add a nice little bitterness
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Soft and creamy
O: Certainly a solid beer, but not very IPA-like. All the hops really do are add some aroma and bitterness. I guess the strength and ale qualities qualify, but it's not typically what one would expect in terms of hop flavor. Worth a shot if you like rye beers, though

A - Two finger's worthy of slightly creamy fluffy airy khaki colored head with a slightly rocky top... Excellent retention... A mix of amber and bronze... 100% Translucent... Loaded with small bubbled moderate to quick paced carbonation swirling throughout... A very impressive looking offering... A bit of lacing clings to the glass throughout...
S - A regal hop presence from the start... Mostly earthy with just a bit of pine and citrus mixed in... Cracker and bread crust make up the malty base... Excellent balance... Missing in action is the much anticipated spicy rye component which was a bit of a let down given the style classification... Otherwise a very solid aroma...
T - The hops are again at the forefront... They take on a very earthy noble character... The rye component that was missing in terms of aroma emerges on the palette and takes a very close back seat in terms of prominence with the hops... It's crisp and spicey... The malty base lingers way beneath the surface... A bit grainy as well... Very nice brew...
M - On the lighter side of medium bodied... Clean... Uber crisp... Dry throughout and turning drier on the finish... A bit of prickly carbonation bubbles on the tongue...
D - A very nice beer from Harpoon... Stellar appearance and solid in all other facets... I would gladly drink this with regularity... My only real complaint was that the rye component only translated on the palate and not the nose...

12oz bottle served in a standard pint glass.
pours a mostly clear, golden / medium amber tone while yielding about a 1" head; moderate retention and lacing. nose offers notes of citric and earthy hops, rye, and a subtle caramel maltiness.
no surprises in the flavor: citrus and earthy hops, maybe a touch of pine, with a significant though not overwhelming rye presence, joined by some malt characters in the background. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.
overall a nice beer. not an eye-opener by any means but solid. enjoyed at an end-of-summer clam bake on the cape and it hit the spot.

Bottle poured into nonic pint glass.
A Clear, orangey, light amber color. Two finger, thick frothy white head. Good retention, nice lace on the glass.
S: Could smell this as soon as I cracked the bottle open. Bready, crackey malt. Light, sweet citrus and grapefruit. Spicy rye notes mixed with some herbal qualities. Some grassiness in thier as well.
T: Sweet bready malts. Definitely get the Harpoon house yeast. Modest hop bitterness, citrus, grapefruit and some herbal notes. Spicy rye bread, nice dry finish. Leaves a nice herbal, tangy bitterness.
M: Medium bodied, very smooth, carbonation is about right, very nice drinkability.
O: Nice beer here, nice mix of a solid ipa and a malty rye. Worth a try.

12oz bottle from the fall mix pack
Pours a golden color with a tinge of amber, smallish head but somehow it leaves a ton of sticky lacing on the glass as it depletes.
Smell does have a subtle spicy aspect from the rye malt, hop presence though is not as strong since the malt tends to dominate the aroma.
Taste starts out with a complex malt front, some spicy rye notes tingle, body has a nice full feeling with good carbonation that lends a creaminess, hops are still sorely lacking for what they consider a "rye IPA" but then again rye can dominate any flavor profile, strength is well hidden and is surprisingly easy drinking, finishes quite clean and dry.
As a rye IPA, it misses the mark but as a straight rye beer it's pretty solid

12 ounce bottle - $1.79 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours a clouded, coppery body with a frothy, wispy, off-white head. Settles out to a thin, oily film.
Smell: Bready-scented pale maltiness embellished with a hint of caramel glazed rye grain. Pointedly citrusy, resiny, lightly earthy hops.
Taste: Pale, bready malts with some sweetish caramel character. Spicy rye grain. Citric, juicy lemon, grapefruit given a belt of cutting resins. Moderate bitterness. Drying, bitter, citrusy and rye-hinted on the soft finish. Enduring bitterness just lounging around on the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Overall: Pretty nice one, here. Adequately malty and balanced by a good showing from both the American hops and rye.

Enjoyed in a pint glass
A: pours a deep golden color with a slight pinkish almost purple tinge, has a ton of carbonation bubbles working their way up through the brew, pours very clear, pours with ample fluffy pure white head that is light and airy with tiny bubbles, head lingers for an incredibly long time before dissipating and leaving a ton of lacing ringed around the glass
S: really great rye notes with a solid sweetness and a really solid citrusy hop aroma that is real fresh, well balanced between the rye and hops
T: really a phenomenal taste, ive loved it since the first time i tried it from the hundred barrel series and im elated to see them put it in a six pack, really wonderfully balanced between the bitterness of the hops and the deep malty sweetness of the rye, great hop notes, very earthy almost woody
M: medium carbonation tingle, smooth throughout the middle and finishes with a great bittering dryness which lingers on the palate for a long time afterwards
O: Now that its in six packs this is likely to become my go to IPA, its a toss up between this and flower power, great job by harpoon on this one

sm- grassy hops with a little spice from the rye
taste- at first i taste just the spicy cloves from the rye, but this subdues into the hop's resin and bitterness
m - smooth and very dry. A great palate cleanser
o - this is very light and very tasty. The more I have it the more I want to drink. The cycle continues.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a slightly cloudy orange, two fingers of quite dense head with some impressive lacing. Nice look.
Smells of citric hops, fresh tangerine, slight rye.
Tastes a bit more herbal than the nose let on, citric hops are quite prevalent, but the rye is a bit too subtle.
Feels medium bodied, initial smoothness is nice bit there's too much carbonation.
Overall: At the end is of the day this is a good beer, but i was expecting more rye malt in the taste.

12oz. bottle served in my Harpoon IPA glass. Best by 8/15/12 indicated on the neck of the bottle - got this one in right under the wire. Pours a dull, burnt orange-copper with a loose, half inch, off-white head and a slightly hazy clarity. Head eventually dissipates into a broken slick that coalesces around the shoulders of the glass. Some delicate strands of lacing are revealed during the tasting. Nose initially expresses pine and citrus before yielding a hint of caramel and earthy malts. Taste is earthy malts and hops with a slightly bitter and medicinal finish - all the nuances of the nose seem to drop out of the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a crisp carbonation and a light, palate-cleansing acidity. Overall, a bit lackluster. Not something I need to revisit again.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Head is nice and lacing is good. Color is copper to orange amber.
Odor is rye for the most part. Hops are represented by some pine and citrus.
Taste is pretty well balanced between the rye and the hops. Both seem to be well balanced and there is some malt coming through as well.
Mouth feel is about medium. It is pretty easy to drink.

Single bottle from Premium Gourmet of Buffalo. Poured into a Duvet goblet.
Bright amber brew, nice billowing head that settles into a nice little layer. Good lacing, decent looking brew.
Nose is sweet malt, very little hops at all, with the caramel, toffee and rye grain dominating things.
Nice rye brew, with the hops having a bit more of a go on the palate. A bit of citrus there, and with a nice rye character.
Thinner bodied, carbonation is touch hot. Hop bitterness lingers a bit.
Interesting rye brew, I enjoyed it. Again, more hops would have been great, but I did get that chewy rye grain flavor, which is a good thing.

A coppery orange glow permeates the glass, almost dark brown in the middle. Decent head floats on top.
Smells of hop resins leaning towards floral with a little bit of citrus thrown in. A little bit of malt on the nose with a spicy edge from the rye.
Hop bite up front on the palage, mixed with the rye spicyness leads to a sharp edge to the beer. Undearneath are rich flavors of citrus hop resins. Hop flavor is muted a bit, definitely stronger on the bitterness than the flavor but you still get a mouth full of resiny hops.
Finishes with a bit of a spicy bite but clean, with a deeper malt profile than I expecting. Dry and a little rough on the palate from the rye.
Definitely more interesting than their normal IPA, with a deeper range of flavors and more hop aroma and flavor. Still needs a boost in the hop flavor department. The rye keeps things interesting but almost drags the beer down with its rough, spicy flavors. Enjoyed one or two, but wasn't sure I was ready for a third because of the rye.

We pour a rich tawny brew with hues of deep rust when held to light. It holds a one and a half finger off-white head comprised of huge bubbles. This shows nice retention, leaving sticky, spotty lacing all over the glass. Carbonation appears robust, and a thick haze is produced from the last half of the bottle, without sediment. The nose is bright with tart citric hops mixing with dry herbal hops. The latter are syrupy and heavy with sweet fruit. The rye bite is the primary component of the malt bill, with faint caramel sweetness. With warmth come faint banana esters, booze, and a creaminess. Our first impression is that this is a very tasty beer with a hearty bittering finish. As we sip, syrupy sugars and strawberry sweetness mix with a biting rye and drying barley. The middle shows more simple grain to the peak, with a quick flash of those bright citric hops from the nose. More sweetness comes to balance, with passion fruit and lemon flesh mixing with dry, flowery hops to the finish. Mineral wateriness comes to wash the sweetness, allowing for the rye to peak one more time. The aftertaste breathes of rye, faint tinny metals, light booze, and crisp herbal hops. The body is medium and the carbonation is medium. There is creamy slurp yet a soft crisp smack to each sip. There is a light coating, with a fine bubbly prick to the tongue. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks great.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the amazingly balanced nose. It smells just as you would expect for a “Rye IPA”. The flavor is not quite as robust as you would expect, but this guy still hits the style on the head in every department, making for a nice prototype for this emerging style.

Above average rye ipa from harpoon. vibrant orange color with large bubbles, yet not overly carbonated tasting. i detect dusty grains and rye on the nose, some english/east coast fruitiness. ale starts off on the fruity side, and then progress into a dry, bitter finish. the rye is more subtle on this one than something like the ruthless rye in my opinion. quite drinkable at almost 7%, though the mouthfeel was slightly oily.

I picked a bottle of this up at Mt Rose quick six, enjoyed chilled in a willybecker.
The color is a golden glowing orange shade with hazed appearance and thick collar of about 2 fingers of beige which leaves a nice coating of lace on the glass. The smell is very fragrant with hop fruitiness which provides a slight piney odor with mild citrus and grapefruit elements but a gentle malt odor provides some sweetness in the nose. The feel is good, nice bitter elements combined with gentle toast and malt sweetness with a light spiciness and moderatly high carbonation level with some oiliness from the hops.
I really like how this takes a little bit of influence from Harpoon ipa and adds a new dimension, the rye adds to the spice flavor of the hops which are bitter in flavor and a little citrus tasting at times too. I like the gentle orange rind element with hints of pine and the malt adds a nice caramel tinge in the back end. Overall I was pleased with this ipa, pretty solid for the style and enjoyable with a nice rye presence.

Another pick from my mix a six pack, was either this or the Summer.
A: Got a good pour from this beer. Has a light amber on the bottom and a hazy orange color in the middle, topped with a two finger soapy white head.
S: The spice of the Rye is what jumps out at me first. Followed by some pine resin, apricots and citrus aroma.
T: Lots of bitter hops up front and leads into the spiciness of the Rye. The flavor ends with some caramel, orange zest and pine, with a little pepper.
M: Very nice mouth feel that compliments this complex body. Moderate carbonation enhances the Rye and hop bitterness but its not too over bearing.
O: Havent had too many Harpoon's and thats a surprise since I'm from MA, but overall a quality IPA and a nice take on the style!

It's blazing here with heat indices over 100 and my wife is on me to grill steaks.... I wanted something refreshing and saw this in the cooler... Best by 09/15/12...
The spiciness of the rye really jumps out at me right off... Keeps in interesting and its a nice change of pace from the loads of IPAs I've been drinking... There's a pineyness to the hops although they're certainly not overpowering... I'm digging this so far...
Big burst of piney hops followed quickly by a smooth rye maltiness that spices this up and makes this unique... I like the rye bill here as it makes this stand out from other IPAs... Very drinkable with an interesting character that's both refreshing and delicious...
I liked this beer... Extremely solid and one that will be a staple while the hot weather lasts...

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a nonic pint glass. Best by June 15, 2012.
A dull orange amber body is made but giving to a simple nice big off white three finger head on the pour. Good retention and staying power, the force is strong with this one. But overall not bad looking, not much else to say.
Nose is good smelling but strangely hop subdued. Toasty sweet malts akin to strong ale, hints of a citrus and apricot hop angle hide in the background.
Palate hits with a good quenching and full character. Texture first, full yet light. Flavor profile hits with a spicy mix of malt and finishes slightly hop dry, and lingering citrus orange. Some drying faint pine mixes nicely and a warming hop orange.
Overall quite enjoyable, even if the taste profile doesn't hit all the notes, it seems the feel gives those notes just the right amount of ooomph to dig. Yeah.. I am liking this one.
