Munich Dunkel Lager |  5.70% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once). bottle (69), on-tap (9), growler (1)

Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Our Oak Aged Dunkel is brewed using traditional German ingredients and aged on American Oak. The brew itself is highlighted by Munich malt, Tettnang hops, and German Ale yeast, resulting in a clean, earthy flavor.

After primary fermentation is complete, we transfer the beer to a secondary aging vessel containing oak infusion spirals. These oak spirals contribute subtle, woody sweetness and vanilla notes. The wood complements the malt character and adds a layer of complexity to the delicate, herbal hops.

The result is a pleasing, drinkable autumn beer. The best place to enjoy this beer is during the winter, next to a roaring fire, along with a bratwurst.

Thanks to Ohoove for cellaring this for a couple years so we could appreciate something better than the masses apparently experienced in earlier tastings. This brew is a deep brown color with golden-copper edges. The head is a modest, off-white cover that hangs on well and leaves a similarly modest trace of lace. The aroma says lots of hot cereal malt, like heavy duty Maypo. Very nice and reminds me of many of my own home brew mash tun scents. Simple but oh so satisfying. The taste comes on with much the same theme, only it's a tad disappointing in being a little less emphatic than the aroma suggested. But it's not really bad at all. The malt delivers a slight evergreen edge and maybe a little root beer and certainly a deep oak, as advertized. The body is solidly medium with very subtle carbonation, a tad flat for a smooth, somewhat aqueous feel. This is a tasty malt brew that goes down easily. Also easily recommended.

Bomber bottle from the cellar, purchased Dec 2010.
Off white head, brown liquid.
Mild aroma. Malty, not a lot of hops. Very faint oak, not much.
Tastes of grain, mild hops, somewhat abrasive.
Slight creaminess to mouthfeel. Medium body.
This one might have begun to turn. “Old”, but still drinkable. Its best days have passed.

A - Pours with one and a half fingers of white foam on top of a clear, amber-brown body. The head settles slowly but leaves only light lace.

S - A mild nose of light caramel and sweet bready malt with just a touch of toasted wood.

T - Smooth, sweet malt up front with notes of caramel and toffee. Some lightly spicy hops in the middle with more toffee. Finishes with smooth brown sugar and light bitterness as well as a lingering touch of vanilla.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - Very smooth and well made, the base beer is quite good, which work out well because the oak aging is very subtle. A little vanilla is really all the barrel seems to have added but it is still a nicely made beer.

A: very thin head on a brownish-amber murky body. Little lacing.

S: nice dark/caramel malt with a subtle vanilla, dark fruit, mostly cherry note.

T: fairly rich, sweet caramel malts with some dark fruit and spicey notes. the oak is very mild with more nutty and toffee notes noted.

M: medium body and high carbonation.

Overall: nice and drinkable. not much of the oak barrel aging coming through with this one. Still flavorful.

Acquired from TheManiacalOne so a big THANK YOU goes out to him.
Poured in to a pint glass.

A: This beer pours a ruddy amber, deep copper color with a one finger of sudsy khaki head. Head recedes to a film and leaves minimal spots of lacing.

S: Nose is oak, grass, and toffee notes.

T: Taste starts with some oaked notes, and a ton of toffee, fruity flavoring. A touch of nuttiness and grain fill out the middle with a continued toffee flavoring. Finish has more oaked notes, vanilla nd a bit of grassiness.

M: Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation, thin, slick oily feel with a very sticky finish.

O: Goes down easily, ok tasting, not filling, low kick, ok representation of style. Nothing mind blowing here, but a decent enough beer to kick back with for a bit.

a: dark amber/mahogany in color with a small off white head that settles into a thin lacing.

s: sweet, rich caramel malt aromas with subtle herbal hop character....oak (vanilla-ish) notes. nice.

t: big rich, malty flavors with notes of caramel with a noticible vanilla oak backbone. adds a pleasantly sweet, sticky feeling in the mouth that makes you want more. well done.

m: smooth mouthfeel;

i'm surprised i enjoyed this as much as i did. i think the bottle was pretty overpriced (around $7) but i'm glad i tried it and would recommend it to any malt fanatic in a heartbeat.
