Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
For the 33rd session of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series, we’re using locally grown hops and malted barley in our Glacier Harvest Wet Hop Ale, a pale ale made with fresh Glacier hops.
Wet hop beers are brewed using fresh, “wet” hops instead of traditional dried hops—hops contain about 60% moisture when they are picked. Typically, when hops are picked they are quickly dried and refrigerated to make them stable and more consistent for brewing. Freshly picked wet hops, however, need to be used within hours of harvest or they will begin to degrade rapidly.
Wet hops retain more of their natural aroma and volatile flavors that dissipate when dried. This gives wet hop beers a fresher hop flavor and aroma than that of beers hopped with processed hops. Barley grown in Maine complements the New York-grown Glacier hops. This robust pale malt can stand up to the intense, immersed hop flavor, and makes the beer a true celebration of Northeastern US brewing.

Light amber with tan fluffy head.
Sweet and malty smell, lovely hop not in the nose.
Very fluffy to the taste with a lot of carbonation.
Malty with a bit of skunk to it, a bit of a flat taste but I think that is due to the fact that the best by date is 1/15/11.
A very bread like density and some good spice from the hops.

22oz. bottle served into a tulip glass
Pours a rusty, coppery shade of orange-brown. About 1.25 fingers of soft, buttermilk head leave adequate lacing. Its a very solid looking pale ale.
Yeah, yeah, I know. I shouldn't be reviewing a wet hop ale nearly one year after it was released. That's a recipe for disaster, right? Well, it turns out that this beer still holds up. Seriously. Sure, it is malt forward at this point in time. Aromatic malts and a smaller amount of caramel malt make up the majority of the aroma and flavor. But the hops are still there. A distant grass note lingers in the background, but most impressive is a dedicated red fruit component -- an aroma very close to that of strawberry. That somewhat unique red fruit note makes this a good beer, even now, despite the beer's age.
This beer has thinned out a bit in the past yearish but it's an appropriate body for an APA. Overall, this impressed me way more than I ever expected it to. Was the red fruit flavor even more prominent when fresh? Or did it develop with age? Regardless, I'd happily drink this again.

Review adapted from notes taken 4/2/11
Appearance: Hazy, cloudy copper with a nice head and good lacing
Smell: Some sweet, pale malts - some caramel - floral/grassy hops and some strange citrus
Taste: Not great, but not bad - malts are somewhat interesting - pale, hints of amber and caramel - slightly sweet - hops have a weird citrus flavor, kind of like bitter, old orange flesh - lots of grass
Mouthfeel: Well-carbonated and crisp, refreshing, a little sticky
Overall: Good, probably should have drank it sooner
I was not in love with this beer's hop profile. The citrus flavors were simply strange, and there was way too much grass. Regardless, I might try this again next year.

Lots of coating up and down the sides of the glass led to a rich coating of suds all over the sides. The aroma was very light, Touches of light hops, piney with a note of grapefruit mixed in, but mostly dominated by a light grain like aroma. As it warmed a bit buttery brought into the mix as well. The flavor was light, nice pale ale here and very well balanced. Initial rush of hops was quickly overtaken by a very smooth and very well balanced mid palate malt profile. I was really impressed here with how nicely that came together. Smooth, light carbonation kept it from feeling too overdone and made for a very session able little ale.

Strong aroma is mainly hoppy with a hint of candy caramel and a strong tang of - what? Citrus? Wood? It pours a clear, slightly reddish amber with a fairly thick pale yellowish tan head. Hoppy flavor has slightly sweet caramel, oaken and citrus tones and a weird hint of something I can't quite describe - a truly unique flavor. Texture is fairly smooth and somewhat fizzy; finish is slightly tingly and woody and doesn't last. Not too shabby.

22oz bottle poured into pint
A - Decent dark yellow to amber. Off white head with lots of bubbles
S - A grassy, pine bitterness. Distinct caramel and bready malt.
T - The breadiness of this beer threw me off as it is supposed to be a Wet Hop ale. I was expecting some juicy piney hops but just got some weak grainy hops, soggy bread malt and a weird metallic kind of aftertaste.
M - Metallic aftertaste, thin to medium body, unbalanced, slightly overcarbonated.
D - It is not too difficult to drink per se, but the off flavours make you question why you'd want to.

Bomber poured into a tulip in October 2010.
Slightly hazy amber with a head that brings the frothiness, but not so much lacing. Pretty meek nose, mainly bready malts with some mild herbal hoppiness. Tastes pretty bready as well, and in fact that's the most enjoyable thing about this beer. The hop profile isn't entirely pleasing, starting earthy, leafy and herbal but quickly turning metallic. Finishes fairly clean, a touch on the thin side, with a powerful lingering metallic flavor that somewhat ruins the experience. Subpar as both an APA and a wet hop ale.

Pours a light brown and honey color, very clear, with a one finger white head that has average retention and lacing.
Aroma is a pleasant mix of floral / fruity hops (apples, strawberries, pineapples and peaches) and sweet/burnt malts.
Taste starts out with a very light caramel malt note that is soon subdued to hop bitterness, with faint fruity notes (not nearly as much as in the aroma) and lots of grass/hay. Some malty notes come through very lightly towards the end of the sip. Aftertaste is mildly bitter and also grassy.
It finishes fairly dry with moderate to high carbonation. Body is medium. Mouthfeel not that impressive.
Overall a great smelling beer but the taste/mouthfeel was a bit of a letdown. Not a bad beer but there are a lot better examples of the same style out there.
