American Pale Wheat Ale |  6.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (87), on-tap (9), growler (1), cask (1)

Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This full, smooth wheat ale is warming and delicious. It's mildly hopped to let the distinct flavor and aroma of real VT maple syrup take the lead. The maple sweetness and body that blankets this velvety amber beer showcases one of New Englands most beloved traditions. Brewed with wheat malt, pale malt and caramel malt. Hopped with Willamette.

The pure maple syrup used in this beer came from two syrup makers in the Green Mountain State. The Baker Family in East Dummerston has been boiling maple sugar since the 1950s. Dave Gavett also provided syrup from his Scrag Mountain Sugar House in Waitsfield. John's recipe, along with top quality syrup from these two Vermont maple sugar operations, resulted in a crisp wheat ale that is warming and delicious. It is mildly hopped to profile the distinct aroma and flavor of real Vermont Maple Syrup.

I picked up a bottle and poured it into a regular pint glass. A good head, a nice reddish brown color. I could smell a little maple. The initial taste was more wheat than maple. Eventually the maple came out and unfortunately started to dominate. Unless you are a fan of the maple taste, I suggest only having this beer in small amounts.

Aroma has definite maple and wheat tones, plus fruity, malty and hoppy hints. Pours a clear, dark, fizzy copper with a fairly thick pale copper-tan head. Flavor has a wheaty core with maple and fruity notes plus hints of woody hops and caramel, and just a touch of horehound. Texture has firm body and a decent amount of fizz, leaving a tingly, syrupy, slightly hoppy finish. This is a good one, so catch it while you can, no matter what series!

Absolutely a work of art. I had it back in 2010 and remember to this day exactly what it tasted like. It was that distinctive and that amazing. The maple syrup gave the beer perfect sweetness and added to its complex wheat flavor. Red, clear, and smooth this beer will be greatly missed.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with an off white head. In the aroma, mellow maple syrup and banana. In the taste, well, it's a candied banana with a touch of maple syrup in the end. A smooth and medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry candied banana flavor in the aftertaste. A bit sticky sweet, and a bit eh!

A: Good head retention with the beer being a bold amber red.
S: A little light on the smell. Some maple hints. Sugary smelling.
T: Some apple flavor initially which fades to wheat and a little dare I say stale bread taste? The maple is very subdued and the finish is very gross bitter that doesn't really have a pin pointed flavor.
M: Sits quite bubbly with a medium body. Pretty smooth.

Overall there are a lot of elements to this beer that I like. The sweetness of the maple comes through giving it an apple like taste. The wheat is slightly present as well. The problem is though, none of these flavors is really big and bold so they all subtly blend together into a rather poor tasting beer.

Poured from tap into pint glass at Lazy Boy in White Plains, NY. Wish I knew how old this was, cuse it looks like its been a while since it was retired...
This beer didnt have any real unique charateristics...plain and mild acorss the board. Over malty, almost lager like, with no maple flavor. I was so dissapointed in this brew. Not worth trying at all in my opinion...unless you want a forgetable ordinary "beer". Sorry Harpoon...not quite up to par with the rest of your stuff...

A - Amber/brownish color with a pale, beige head.

S - Not a strong aroma, but what I pick up is on the sweet side and pleasant.

T - Smooth, kind of sweet (but not overly). I get the maple but have to look for a bit more than I thought that I would.

M - I didn't get much alcohol burn or even warmth. Although, the absence of the alc. kind of works in this beer's favor w/its flavor profile, IMO.

O - Maybe it's because I didn't go in expecting much after reading some other reviews, but I actually thought this was a really nice, drinkable beer. I kind of wished I'd saved my bottle for the fall but I enjoyed it a lot in the late summer as well. I probably won't put a lot of effort into tracking more down, but I'd definitely buy/drink again if I happened across it.

A - Clear golden orange with a white head that laces down the glass.

S - Neutral smell with whisps of sweetness.

T - Sweet, low-medium maltiness. A hint of Belgian bubblegum style esters. No detectable maple on my pallet. Light alcohol taste. Light bitterness at the end. Slightly buttery.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a touch of alcohol warmth.

O - Expected a little more from this beer. Alcohol presence overpowers maple flavors which this beer is meant to showcase. Honestly, a little disappointed as a 100 series beer from Harpoon.

Poured a lighter amber color from 22 oz bomber with a small whiteish head that didn't last long. Aroma of wheat bread, caramel, and maple syrup. Taste was sweet(er) malt, caramel, maple syrup, with very little bitterness. Not bad but uncertain if I'd seek this out again.

Thanks very much to schmittymack for sharing this one the other night. Apparently he'd had it for a while, but it didn't show all that much age. Poured an amber hue with a small lingering off white head. Aromas of caramel, maple syrup, and light wheat. On the palate, this one was fairly light bodied with flavors of maple syrup, caramel and wheat.

Poured a 2" off-white head which dissipated to 1/8". Lovely dark amber color. Really not much of a smell at all. Flavor is subtle but classy with a hint of maple and sweet malt. Medium body with a creamy buttery feel and a surprisingly long finish. All in all this was like a mild butterscotch candy.

The pour was nice medium dark. It had a full white creamy head. I was anticipating more of an aroma considering it was a Maple wheat beer.

The taste was easy, it did have some hints of maple syrup but I also detected some buttery nuts with a slight feel of smoked wood.

It was so easy drinking, maybe a bit too much. Round and soft almost to the point where I was waiting for something and it never came.

While the taste was easy, it did leave a very pleasant taste of maple that was satisfying.
