On-Tap at Buk's in Cambridge. Cheers to the brothers alstrom for crafting this wonderful brew! Dark murkly cola brown that almost looks like it has hints of purple if held up to the light. Head is minimal as is retention and lacing. Aromas are strong barley/wheat wine ones, with lots of intricacies. A real malt bomb with an extra edgy wine/vanilla/fruit/oak kick from the barrel aging. Sweet like candy sugar it almost tastes like passionfruit or guava halfway through the glass! Mouthfeel is medium bodied>thick, drinkability is marred only by the extreme nature and flavors of this brew! Still a real champion! I'd love to have it again someday!

This is more just a note on the difference between the original and the Gewürztraminer version.
The aging of this beer in the Gewürztraminer barrell's adds a new and amazing dimension. Really the best way to describe it is that of a rich chocolate brownie that has been upgraded with a white marbled effect. The aging adds a slight woody barrel flavor, but more than that adds some overtones of a lighter juicy fruit. Again you still have the dark malts and rich flavors, but this aging just adds some amazing extra touches.
If the original is fantastic, this is even better. A shame it's not more available.

This version of Triticus was my first beer of the 2005 American Beer fest. It was a good way to start.
It was a nive hearty cola colour- something I tend to find very inviting when it's in a beer glass!
The smell included hints of molasses and just a touch of grapefruit. Odd for such a dark beer- but then, it was conditioned in a Gewurtraminer barrel! The grapefruit notes were very pleasing.
The flavour was a VERY nice dark sweet maltiness, and had overtones of chocolate, brown sugar and banana.
Body was medium-heavy and smooth, but was deceiving- at times, it even seemed a bit thin! Alcohol presence balanced it nicely.
This is a beer I'd love to have again. However, living in Alabama, the chances are pretty damned thin.
Be well
