I thought this was a DAMN fine showing from Brazil. I judged it as a German Style Hefe Wiezen Double Bock. I went out of my way to pour the yeast, like one is suposed to do with a good hefe bier. I did not ding it for being the cloudy brown that it is but I did ding it for the lack of head. The wheat should have given it a better head. The aroma is fruity with banana and pear, bready malt and little in the way of hops. The flavor is malty with caramel and banana esters with a slight phenol spiciness at the end. The mouthfeel was ok, a tad sticky. If was attenuated a bit more I would bump it up to a 4. HIGHLY drinkable, some were saying that the alcohol gets in the way but I totally dissagree. There is no heat to so I do not see the problem. I still put Aventinius (SP??) above it but not by much.

Poured into an E&J Cask & Cream glass on 5/14/12

Batch 04

The appearance is something of a cloudy, muddled brown. A two finger head crowned with a layer of loose bubbles dissipates after a few minutes. No retention or lace.

The aroma has a distinctly tangy wheat snappiness. There is a hint of dustiness and yeast, too. Underneath the wheat are notes of raisins, figs, bread, caramel, cocoa, dark cherry and suggestions of leather. Faint overtones of alcohol heat.

The flavor starts off with promise - deep wheat and bread flavors mix with more subtle representations of the complexities of the nose. However, the flavors tank quickly, leaving a finish that is wrought with oxidation and old paper. The less than pleasing flavors of the latter half linger far too long.

The feel is on the thin side of medium overall, devolving in tandem with the flavor profile. Carbonation is on the lower side, which is nice.

While there are a few good things about this beer to enjoy, it ultimately falls short for me. It's drinkable enough and I find it mellows over time. Not terrible.

Glowing chestnut, active bubbles and tight creamy taupe head that fades and leaves the odd white trail. Banana creme, rye dough and wax on the nose.
Ryvita, more banana, milk chocolate and maraschino with clove and cinnamon to end.
Mango milkshake end and slight tingly linger - dies a bit. Medium, very creamy and smooth, bit of heat.

Some big spice balanced by very soft body. Not deep, but goes down dangerously easy for the strength. Don't get much actual wheat character, but still a solid weizenbock.

12oz bottle into a Weyerbacher tulip. Thanks to Ernie for busting out this crazy beer at a tasting.

A: Clear persimmon body with a half-finger of fine tan foam that settles into a ring. Not bad at all.

S: Rich, intense aroma of cooked bananas, complete with butter + cinnamon. I like it.

T: More cooked banana goodness. Pure, straight banana + brown sugar sweetness. It's no Aventinus, but it's pretty darn good.

M: Smooth medium body with low carbonation.

D: The sweetness + stickiness don't take too much away from the tastiness. Ok.

Notes: Avoid this beer if you'd rather your Weizenbock be something other than a banana-bomb, but if that sounds appetizing this is a great one to seek out. Extremely flavorful and, to me, extremely enjoyable. Not a masterpiece of brewing by any stretch, but quite an unexpected treat.

Cheers!

Pours a dark brown with a 1 finger creamy brown head. Good retention.

Aroma of malt and light wheat.

Taste is sweet, wheat, woody and cloves. Also get some type of rubber taste going on.

Mouthfeel is slighly cleansing, medium bodied. Rather dull on the tongue.

Overall, drinkable, but not too exciting.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Head fades almost immediately. Dark with lots of brown and amber tones. Pours and looks like a glass of Diet Dr. Pepper

S: Caramel, banana, sweet bread dough.

T:Tastes of wheat and toasted corn. Caramel, cola. High alcohol is noticeable but balance nicely with the sweet agave syrup flavor.

M: Carbonation fades quickly on the palate into a noticeable light syrup viscosity. Sits well on the tongue and cheeks.

D: Good but I can't shake the similarity to diet soda. Hmmmm....not sure what to think of this.

Eisenbahn Vigorosa

Appearance: dark amber, very small head, and a little lacing.

Smell: caramel thick, some spices, and banana.

Taste: banana, roasted malts, and some spice.

Mouthfeel: medium-light.

Overall:
It is fairly thin and faintly watery. It initially comes off as a thicker triple, but that is not the case.

335 mL bottle, thanks Jon,

A: Pours a deep brown with a medium off-white head, solid retention, no lace.

S: Banana bread, definite plum and Concord grape jelly.

T: Cloves come to the forefront a lot more than in the nose. Some dark malt, lots of dark fruit - spiced plums, mission figs and raisins.

M: Medium-bodied, fairly boozy, prickly carbonation.

D: A good weizenbock, not super complex or estery, but it's a solid effort.

Presentation: 12oz brown screw cap; no date that I saw

Appearance: Mahogany beer capped by a dark ivory cap. A strong pour produces a nice 2 finger head, but this fades way too quickly to a patchy film and ring.

Smell: Lots of sticky dark fruit (I'm getting dried figs and raisins) as well as some dark brown sugar and a hint of fruity alcohol. Pretty nice overall.

Taste: Unfortunately the flavors don't match the aromas. While there is a really nice, almost burnt toffee characteristic here, the attractive dark fruit aromas are not mirrored in the flavor profile. Hint of earthiness, and a lot (especially for an 8% beer) of fruity alcohol. Too much, IMO.

Mouthfeel: The booziness comes together with a thinner than usual mouthfeel to make this really pretty lackluster.

Drinkability: I dunno if I'm going to get through this one...

Conclusion: Back to the drawing board with this one I'm afraid.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and poor lacing. Smells of sweet malt, dark citrus, yeast, slight alcohol, and hint of wheat. Fits the style of a Weizenbock. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, sweet malt, slight dark citrus, and yeast. Overall, lacking in body, but good blend and aroma.

Pours a rich umber colour, beautifully cloudy and bronze up to the light. Head is pretty pleasant, dense and beige, sinking steadily, lace left is disappointingly thin actually, but yeah, the nice head makes up for it.

Nose is tasty, malty and sweet for the most part, with a pleasant caramel aroma and a hint of brownness - like toastiness but not quite dark and bitter enough for that, just slight sourness. Hints of raisin and cinnamon on there as well and a mild citric hop character. Very pleasant aromatic nose, sweet and fresh.

Taste is considerably more sour, has a fair amount of citrus zest on the front that descends into a slight milkiness on the mid where the malt rises to join it. A hint of vinegar on the mid before it gets mildly toasty again, with some notes of toasted grain and pine nuts, plus light citric hop notes. Quite tangy on the finish actually but really, overall it seems a bit weak, never quite reaches 'full' flavour, could be sweeter, darker or hoppier and lacks classic weizen esters really.

Fairly good body though, seems a bit light for the dryness it produces on the finish, but not bad.

Weak doesn't equal offensive. It needs a bit more balance, like more malt on the front but it's not a bad drop.

Pours a thick and cloudy deep brown amber colour, with some bubbling head when provoked, but otherwise just a film of off-white bubbling. The thickness and the opaqueness of the body are very nice.

Big sweet weizen notes. More than a hint of banana, some sweet caramel and even a slight hint of booze. Very smooth, rich and very much like a weizenbock should be. Absolutely lovely.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin, which is noticeable right from the start - a shame, and unexpected given the apparent thickness in the body. Taste is smooth, lacking a little of the rich and heavy sweetness I was expecting, but with some really pleasant light boozy phenols and a round deep weizen flavour.

A really good weizenbock. One of the best non-German examples I've had. Eisenbahn again show their skills in producing fine examples of classic styles.

A - Poured out a dark garnet color with a one-finger, thin, tan head. It left little to no lace on the glass.

S - It smelled a little boozy and malty with just a touch of wheat aroma.

T - Taste was not much different from the aroma. Boozy, malty and not much wheat.

M - It was fairly crisp and smooth. A medium bodied beer.

D - Weizenbock? More like a dopplebock. I got very little wheat flavors.

I hastily poured this without getting all any of the sediment, so I will have to do a follow up with the yum-yum's.

It's dark, with ruby highlights throughout the edges. Off white head, and no lacing really.

Smells spicy sweet. Rich in malts with a bit of caramel sweetness.

Taste is similar, yet there is definitely a little alcohol kick in the finish. I don't see a whole lot of the wheat in this...the dopplebock characteristics may over power that naturally.

Light-medium body, easy on the carbonation and smooth on the finish.

This is a not too, yet not under complex brew that can be enjoyed over and over.

This is a Brazilian beer, but brewed in one of the most heavily German influenced states, it carries so much of the
German style of beer, as you can plainly notice in the name and city it's brewed. Culture done well; on both sides of the playing field.

I just stumbled on this today and wondered what a Brazilian doppelbock would taste like.

It pours with a decent head that left nice lace as I drank it. The head was light tan and the beer itself was dark brown but you can see a little light if you hold it up to the light.

Nose is malty, syrupy and caramel

Taste is very malty with some caramel. It is not overly sweet like some others and not that spicy. I would have given it a higher mark if it was a little spicier. The beer seems to mellow a bit as it sits in the glass. I did not hurry!

Mouth feel is good with medium carbonation and not overly sticky.

This beer is very easy to drink and a very good example of the style.

Had this one multiple times in Brazil, quite fresh as expected. It seems as though it is a better beer than we get here, although nothing spectacular.

Golden brown, tan head, but just average retention, minimal lacing.
Nose, just like the palate, is predominantly malty and sweetish, with bread, nuts, oats, vanilla and even a banana hint. Light bodied.
Nice, but as mentioned, nothing spectacular, but well worthwhile if you happen to have one fresh in hands.
