After reading other reviews on this site I had targeted this liquour store for a "beer run" on our recent vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota. I must say that compared to the reviews on here I was very disappointed. Folks had said that they had Yellowstone and Grand Tetons beers and they did not. The selection was pretty disappointing really. The only things that stood out were some singles of belgians on a shelf in the open and the coolers had some Odell, Summit and some beers from the Utah Brewing Cooperative in Salt Lake City. Other than that it was a standard liquour store in my opinion. Perhaps I am spoiled by all the great stores near where I live. I was just disappointed. The service was okay. The employees that were there didn't know if they had any of the beers that I was asking about which would have been a negative normally, but they did immediately call either the owner or another employee who did know which was very nice. The prices were on par with most stores and certainly can't be complained about for a huge tourist area. This is a tough place to review based on the expectation I had based on others reviews. Hopefully I can bring expectations down to a realistic level and the next BA customer will be pleased when they get there. I wasn't able to hit other area stores during our whirlwind "touristing" so I cannot compare it to your other options. I will leave that for the locals I suppose.

Canyon Lake Liquor is nicely tucked away in the corner of Rapid City, yet is easy to find and easy to navigate. If you can find Canyon Lake Drive (or Jackson Blvd for that matter), you'll eventually find this hidden gem. The building is tiny and cozy; located next to a gas station, plenty of parking on site.
The interior of the store is packed with goodies, yet has narrow aisles. The makings of the building allow little to no light to enter - this is a good thing. One complete aisle of beers are in several different coolers. Odells, Yellowstone, Tetons, Big Sky and even a few sixers of Summit are nicely available. Prices are reasonable for the area. Service is very good; I was greeted and quickly asked if I needed assistance by both workers. They were quick to assist other patrons with assistance with wines. Canyon Lake also boasts a rather robust assortment of wines and hard liquors.
If you're in the Rapid City area, and have time, you need to stop by Canyon Lake Liquor. Considering the area, there are limited beer stores within a 300 mile radius. Canyon Lake will rate as one of the best beer stores in the Black Hills! Don't miss it.

A note to keep in mind is that South Dakota in general doesnt have a whole heck of a lot of selections to choose from. That said, Canyon Lake has a decent selection to work with. The location is just on the edge of town but easy to get too just off Jackson Blvd on Canyon Lake Dr. A odd looking building that seems small but does a nice job cramming everything in.
Once inside, there is an impressive wine selection and about 5 freezers or so. A good selection of Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Big Sky and Odells. Mostly year round beers but some seasonal too. I thought it was cool they had the aluminum bottle of Moose Drool available, which in the past I have had troubles finding in a trade. They did have some Belgium beers and some 22s. Chimay and Westmalle to name two. The prices seemed good but nothing great either.
The staff was friendly and it seemed family owned. Not exactly great with beer, but my wine friends were impressed with their selection and knowledge with their wine selection.
Overall its worth a look when in South Dakota.

I found this the best place to buy beer in Rapid City. I used to live walking distance to this place and went there quite a bit. It can be tough to find good micro's in Rapid City, but canyon lake liquor had by far the best selection that I found. Pretty good selection of micros (Yellowstone Valley, Big Sky, Broadway and ODells) are what I usually went for. They also had a good selecton of wine and various other liquor (whiskey, scotch etc..) if that is your thing. Prices were reasonable and service was good. Overall if you want to grab some good microbrews Canyon Lake Liquor is the place in Rapid City.

This is the best liquor store in Rapid City, easily. It is in a somewhat remote part of town, kind of in a residential neighborhood. In a small building that is reminiscent of a ski chalet. Selection is pretty good, best in the area. Many locals from Yellowstone Valley, Breckenridge, and O''Dell. Staff is nice, but their knowledge of beer is limited to the lack of a good assortment in the area. They do have some glassware for purchase, also. Their imports are pretty standard, but do have a good variety of Young's products.
