Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

Happy to see some West Coast brewers continue to go Belgo and not just rely on their hop smack. Hazy golden with a froth- ing that provides a true lacing on the glass. Trademark Tripel nose of honey, ripe pear, peppery alcohol, cracker maltiness and a bit of medicinal phenols. Creamy with a light, smooth level of carbonation. Flavor spins its head around like a devil brew, meaning it walks the line of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale with a sweeter and more alcoholic base. Tropical fruit stomps around. Nutty yeast and a taste of Grape-Nuts in the semidry alcoholic finish. The narrow path of a Tripel is hard to trace—strip the style label from this beer and we’d be singing a different song. Regardless, a tasty sipper that speaks pink elephant.

One finger of thick, off-white head builds quickly at the end of a hard pour. The foamy sheet floats off quickly leaving a few bubbles haphazard across the top of the brew. Color is a shiny reddish-orange.

Aroma of sweet malts, apple juice and ripe grapes. Not getting much here so another nose dive catches a hint of spice. Working too hard, so moving on to other waters.

Tastes grainy and quite sweet up front followed by notes of apple, orange, grapefruit and cotton candy. Some allspice is noticed at the very end but is subdued by a spike of alcohol heat that never quite goes away. After a few drinks some fairly harsh medicinal and metallic notes begin to swell.

These are some choppy seas as we go down the hatch. As mentioned, the alcohol heat has a vendetta, and the other characters in this play are indignant as hell as they fight for top billing, only to end up as fodder for the chaos. A pleasant creamy middle is noticed popping it's head above the swelling tide, but is quickly drowned in the undertow.

The Tripel has always been one of my favorite styles, but this one does it no justice.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

A real nice orange amber and clear body, with maybe a hint of red to it. Off white head makes about two to three fingers, but doesn't have much retention. A simple puck shows up with a little bit of lacing. Fairly nicely drawn brew here, particularly the body color.

Nose is quite spicy. Hints of peanut butter, and mixes of clove and brown like toasty spices. Sweetness is hidden a bit and a bit subdued. Fairly decent on the nose.

Palate hits with a good depth and malt body. Noticeably sweet, with some of the peanut butter action coming along in the mid palate that compliments this nicely. Some warmth but not horribly boozy. A little bit of Belgian sweetness seems more noticeable than the nose, and the spicy character continues on the aftertaste particularly. A good density to this, with some wine vinous character somewhat also with a hint of white grape.

Overall a pretty different tripel, but still quite tasty and enjoyable.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy golden amber color with a nice 1-2 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Fairly dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light creaming carbonation. Aromas of big apple, pear, grape, lemon, candi sugar, honey, bread, clove, light pepper, floral, herbal earthiness, and yeast esters. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and spicy notes; without feeling too malty. Taste of pear, apple, grape, lemon, honey, candi sugar, bready grain, floral, clove, light pepper, and herbal earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, honey, candi sugar, bready grain, clove, light pepper, floral, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity and spicy flavors; with zero cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a moderately slick and lightly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice tripel. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy esters with malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for 11.8%. Really enjoyed this one.
