A : Was a nice dark brown with a thin tan head that disappeared pretty quickly.

S : Roasted malts, coffee, hints of chocolate

T : Lots of coffee flavor, some roasted malt flavor.

M : Medium-bodied. A little on the thin side for what I was expecting of a stout. Some bitterness on a dry finish

D : Real easy to drink. Could definitely order another pint.

From notes last week.

A: Solid creamy head that dissipates quickly, inky dark and inviting. Leaves minimal lacing.

S: Very nice, wasn't expecting much after the first few lame pints. Roasty semisweet chocolate, malted milk, burnt toast.

T: Does not live up to the nose or appearance. There is not much going on here, it is a fairly straightforward dry stout. Some roasted and burnt malts and grain.

M: Weak carbonation despite moderate head, a bit thin, gear nose but missing the rest of the way.

O: Decent stout, it's a shame the taste and mouthfeel are so off from the nice nose and appearance. Easy to drink but certainly nothing special, however it is much better than some of their other beers.

Fresh growler! Thanks little Sis!
Deep brown nearly black pour. Sits as an ebon liquid in the glass capped with a datn frothy foam about a finger high. A bit of a skim remains once the crown fades and there's a few spots of lacing.

Aroma is quite bittered of burnt stuff, hence the name smoke jump. Some chocolate is evident across the nose but its soft and creamy like a filled donut. However, the rawness of bitter burnt coffee-like aroma is bit overwhelming and isn't as balanced as I'd like, but its still pretty decent.

As goes the aroma as goes the taste with this one. Bittered burnt coffee rawness and crazy tanged smokeyness are overwhelmingly unbalanced. If the chocolate found in the aroma would show more in the taste and help balance it with some sweetness would be beneficial.

Body is lighter medium with a slight smooth tone of carbonation but the burntish tang, again, is a bit much on the palate and keeps this from being fully enjoyable.

Pretty average stout with a boost of burnt flavor and aroma then what you might find in other Americanized stout styles. This needs some smoothing out and balance.

On tap at the brewpub in Rapid City. Figured I'd put my review up from earlier notes so I can tick off South Dakota on this site, the unapologetic ticker that I am.

Pours a dark brown color with small tan head.

Coffee and roasted malt on the aroma, fairly simple but good.

Flavor is coffee, roasted malt, and a little bit of chocolate, along with some hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is a little watery, but as much as than you'd expect from a 4-percenter. Somewhat dry on the palate.

Drinkable, and at 4% ABV, even sessionable, a term that the session beer fanatics will mercilessly attack you for if you use improperly. Pretty good overall.

Where there is smoke? Arrives a darker brown color, a bit too light for a stout. Not much for head and lacing.

The nose is limited. Some generic malt undertones with a hint of roast but very light. Some minor yeast notes but not much going on.

The taste is limited as well. The generic malt note with a hint of chocolate and roast. Some minor buytric note that blends unevenly with a light butter note. No real hop finish. Some minor yeast notes.

The body is light and a bit wispy. The abv is low but still would like more body. Would also like more astringency as well.

Dark brown to black in color with a light mocha colored foam head and frothy rim of foam. The nose appeared to bring some oats and a little bit of dough to the discussion. The flavor was smooth and mostly malty. There was a silkiness to the mouthfeel that I would guess was imparted by the oats. The flavor read very smooth as well. There was a mild bitterness and smokiness to the beer closest to the finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Clean finish. Very drinkable. Smoke in the aftertaste.

A-Deep, dark brown with a thin dark tan head that reduced to a thin ring leaving nice lace.

S-Mild in the nose. Some raost, a bit of coffee and maybe a hint of cocoa.

T-A bit more roarty and flavourful on the palate. Still a bit light but it is nice. Would like a bit more umph but I cant complain considering where I am!

M-Medium-light to Light body, a bit watery. Certainly not stout-like. More like a roasty brown ale! Fairly smooth but ends with a whimper.

D-Not bad...would like more (a lot more) body and aroma. Certainly drinkable....nothing "bad" about it but nothing extremely memorable either.

I loved this beer, one of my favorite stouts, had very smoky and coffee like aroma , and a coffee like aftertaste paired well w/ the rare buffalo steak that I had w/ it. Overall I would reccomend this as a highly drinkable brew can't wait to visit Rapid City next year for another one, or two ,or...

This arrived with a thick, deep-brown head with good retention. It was probably the darkest head that I had ever experienced in a beer! The color was a deep, dark brown with absolutely no light able to penetrate its stygian darkness. The nose was faintly smoky, but I had to work to discern anything. The mouthfeel was light to medium with chocolate and smoky flavors appearing on the palate. The finish tended more towards a roasty/smoky flavor with a slight graininess.

Based on notes from my stop there mother's day 06.

Pours deep mahogony to black with a .5" tan head head. Good head retention & lacing

Smell: Nice toasty malts & slight fruittiness

Taste: Roasted malt with fruit accents. Finishes dry with some chocalate notes

MF: Full & rich, excellent carbonation

Very drinkable, easily the best of the 4 beers I tried. I'd drink this again, no problem

Growler filled right to the rim...

Thoroughly ebon hue, this one, with a thin ring of cocoa on top.

Mild roast in the nose, bittersweet espresso, but only a bit...nothing besides, really, just the roast, but it is nice enough...

Smooth, nearly creamy entrance on the palate, but only a limpid presence therafter. Light flavors of chocolate and coffee lie delicately on the tastebuds, and float softly away. Look how nice I'm being...

Medium bodied, with a soft, disappearing, unmemorable finish. Bit watery, not as hefty as we'd want from a stout, even a meek one. This is a Caspar Milquetoast, a Dilton Doily, a Martin Prince. But, it's not bad, either, let us not say that. Just rather middle-of the-road, maybe even mediocre.

Serioiusly, this requires some major muscle to really count as a stout. As it is, it must take company with so many other lackluster brewpub versions, but at least they tried, eh?

06/21/05- Had on tap via (3) samplers at Firehouse Brewing Co, in Rapid City, SD.

Presentation- Had via samplers in 4oz tasters.

Appearance- Dark black pour with a medium creamy head and light lacing.

Smell- Mostly heavy burnt coffee with maybe just a tad of chocolate.

Taste- Heavy roasted coffee taste with a decent amount of hoppy bitterness. Kinda like a stout-ESB hybrid.

Mouthfeel- Ultra carbonated for a stout.

Drinkability- Smoked beer? Didn't really pick up any smoked flavors. Decent, but nothing spectacular.

From a growler.
Aroma is somewhat sweet, yet with a dry coffee ground type of aroma.
Pours with a 1/2 inch head that settles in time. Black with a slight red/brown hues on the edge.
Flavor has a slightly sweet start that moves to a roasty, coffee dryness in the middle that stays through an average long finish. Hints at fruitiness.
Moderate carbonation tha's very soft. Medium feel and thickness, although it can seem a little thin at times.
Overall seems like an average stout. Nothing to criticize greatly, but nothing to praise excessively either.

Translucent dark brown body, very small white head. Smell is very average for a stout, with coffee and chocolate flavors, nothing special. Good coffee flavor in the beer. I bet this beer would have been better on nitro, instead of the porter that they did have.

1/2 Gallon Growler. Light black hue with a thin, dissolving tan head, decent lacing noted in the glass. Has a coffee-bean/espresso nose, pine and some earthy tones as well. Delicious taste; rich, dark roasted malts, coffee and espresso notes up front. Very rich and smooth, just a hint of hop presence. Dark chocolate feel on the palate, very smokey throughout, finishes a bit watery, yet not offensive and a bit dry; perhaps the best offering from the Firehouse, not much to think about, other than a great tasting ale.

This is a dry stout with a coffee-like bitterness as advertised. Once again there is the presence of hops resulting in a chewy bread-like stout. The color is very dark brown with a good head of tasty foam and lacing. Strong coffee nose with fresh-ground columbian coffee bouquet, some malt and luscious malt middle. Mouthfeel reminds one of Young's Oatmeal Stout: wickedly rich and creamy. Just the right amount of hoppy bitterness. A completely drinkable stout. Could use a little more body, as pointed out by another reviewer, but I would order it again.

Clear, black with a nice tan head with excellent retention and lacing. Aroma is sharp with bright, acidic espresso, burnt malts, oak, and cocoa. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a medium body. Expertly balanced hop flavor and bitterness. Watery and accesible with mild malts. A good introductory stout...smooth and easy to drink but lacking in body.

One of the other popular house regulars, this creamy headed dark dark brew has a well roasted chocolate aroma and bold hop finish. I’m not sure if the stout was nitro pulled but the head and body were creamy enough to be.
