Drank on tap at Brewer's Alley in Frederick, MD. Taken from notes:

Appearance: Deep caramel color, constant film, fantastic lacing.

Smell: Aroma of unsweetened cocoa and milk chocolate.

Taste: Smooth taste with a hint of cocoa and a touch of dark malts.

Mouthfeel: Bitter chocolate flavor left on palate, very pleasant....that's about it!

Drinkability: Smooth like Guinness but not as bland. I think most non-regular beer drinkers would enjoy this.

This ale should be casked.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown with a creamy light tan head. Aroma is a very basic, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee, simple but effective, sweet and roasty. Flavor is much the same, sweet, a bit more chocolate, but coffee is still present, very sweet and easy drinking, a touch of licorice. Medium body and a softer carbonation. I liked that it didn't try to overdo the basic stout, very easy drinking but still with plenty of rich character.

Had this one as a 4-ounce sample during a holiday beer tasting, so this reveiw may not be as comparable to one based on a full pint pour.

In any case, my sample began with a foamy head that quickly dissipated into a dark ruby body. What lacing there was seemed somewhat slippery.

I wasn't impressed with its nose, but a full quaff may have provided a different result. The palate does get some chocalate notes with a bittersweet aftertaste. Not much body, but the balance was pleasant and offered a modicum of character.

It is a pleasant quaff, nevertheless, but not one of the better stouts that are out there. Still, I do like the Brewers Alley and always stop by when in historic Frederickburg. Maybe Barbara Fritchie will stop by for a cold one...

Let me begin by saying that I am not very familiar with this style of beer. Having been said.

This beer had an interesting vanilla flavor to it that made it intriguing at first. As the night went on, however, i became bored with the initial taste explosion i had experienced and the beer slowly became less appealing. It's very sweet and I could not drink this beer all night. Worth a try if you get a chance though.

On tap @ the brewpub 01-02-09

Pours a dark brown/black with a small head. the aroma is a little lighter than i used to expect from this style. Some roasted and burnt notes come through. The taste has a nice sweet malty roasted taste. The oats give this beer a smooth mouthfeel and makes for an easy drinking stout. Overall an above average oatmeal stout, would recommend trying if you like this style

Stouts can be a mouthful (literally) and oatmeal stouts can sometimes be quite rich in taste, at the risk of losing some drinkability. This one is an exception--an oatmeal that is both tasty and has just the right amount of bubbly carbonation and lighter mouthfeel to be exquisitely refreshing. On tap in "The Fred" yesterday on a break from the AOPA Fly-in. Gorgeous, deep (almost black) color in the glass; roasted malt in the nose and the unmistakable roasted taste in the mouth, but the unexpected (refreshing) carbonation and the lighter mouthfeel made it extremely tasty. Not overpowering and definitely no astringent alcohol taste--even as it warmed. I prefer their Brown Ale, but chose this one just for a change. It was really good! Well worth the try.

Had a pt from the tap. The liquid is a dark brown color with a light tan head good carbonation.

The smell is faint for a stout, Some roasted malt and coffee.

The taste is average, Nothing standing out here, but nothing bad either, A little coffee and less chocolate, A toasted bread flavor is good and a nice hops comes through. Finish is pleasant but not going to get your attention.

Mouthfeel is good yet a little this. Could use a little more body.

Drinkability is good, I would have it as a stout at the brewery but I passed on taking any home and that was the plan. MK

A bit of a slouch, as far as Oatmeal stouts go.

Things start off good. This is a normal, dark Oatmeal stout, with a creamy head that leaves lacing.

Couldnt pick too much up on the aroma. Nothing particularly outstanding that grabs you.

The taste is decent. Your average middle-of-the-road stout. There is some creaminess and roastiness there in the finish which is pleasant.

The mouthfeel was too thin. Watery, definitely. This could be a good thing if you are trying to introduce someone to the wide world of stouts.

I'd be willing to give this another shot, but it wasnt a very impressive beer from my first impression. A good, safe, beginner stout.

Standard respectable opaque brown black hues topped with a wafer thin spoty cap. Light scents of berry and barely, I mean baely roasted malt. Too much like Guinness. Flavor was berry and slight cocoa. A bit thin in the body. Wished it had more I guess, true brew pub characteristics. The kind that evoke a "oh this is a brewpub beer" kinda Earthy flavor. Nope!

$1.50 pint on Wednesday with free Cajun buffet night. Killer time overall.

On tap 11/09/04 at Brewer's Alley.

Black in color with a big creamy brown head. Hops were much more noticeable in both aroma and flavor in the cask conditioned version versus the tap version. The roastiness and chocolate malt aroma and flavor did carry through to balance it out though. Medium-full bodied, smooth and creamier than the tap version.

The cask conditioned version was much more creamy and hoppy than the tap version and I preferred the cask version more.
